Abstract:
Abstract:The objective of this work was to evaluate the apparent digestibility coefficients of nutrients, energy, and amino acids of nontoxic and detoxified physic nut cakes treated with solvent plus posterior extrusion, for Nile tilapia. The apparent digestibility coefficients of crude protein and gross energy were higher for detoxified than for nontoxic physic nut cake. However, the apparent digestibility coefficient of ether extract of the nontoxic physic nut cake was higher than that of the detoxified one. The apparent digestibility coefficient of amino acids of both feed ingredients was superior to 80%, except for glycine, for the nontoxic psychic nut cake, and for threonine, for the detoxified one. Nontoxic and detoxified physic nut cakes show apparent digestibility coefficient values equivalent to those of the other evaluated oilseeds and potential for inclusion in Nile tilapia diets.

Abstract:
AbstractThe effects of 1-h soaking, fermentation and phytase supplementation of a pig diet based on wheat and barley on ileal and total tract apparent digestibility in growing pigs fitted with a post valve T-caecum (PVTC)-cannula were studied. Eight animals in a two-period change-over design were used, subjecting four animals to each treatment (dry, soaked, microbial phytase supplemented or fermented diet). Acid insoluble ash was used as an indigestible marker for calculating apparent digestibility coefficients. Fermentation improved (P<0·05) the ileal apparent digestibility coefficients of organic matter (OM), nitrogen and amino acids, while there was no effect of 1-h soaking and phytase supplementation. The total tract apparent digestibility coefficient of OM was also improved by fermentation. The ileal apparent digestibility coefficient of phosphorus (P) was higher for fermentation (P<0·05) than for dry food and 1-h soaking. The total tract apparent digestibility coefficient of P was higher (P<0·05) for treated food (soaked, fermented and supplemented with microbial phytase) compared with dry food. Fermentation improved (P<0·05) the ileal apparent digestibility coefficient of calcium compared with dry and soaked food, and had no effect on the total tract apparent digestibility coefficient of calcium. Food inositol phosphates were affected by treatment (P<0·05), with a reduction of P bound to inositol hexaphosphate (IP6) of 10% in the 1-h soaked food and of 80% in the fermented food. Degradation of IP6in the gastro-intestinal tract of the animals was lower in the fermented food than in the other treatments. The content of neutral-detergent fibre in the food was reduced (P<0·05) in the soaked and fermented food by 4% and 14%, respectively, compared with the dry food. In conclusion, fermentation of food can improve digestibility of OM, degrade IP6and increase ileal digestibility of phosphorus, nitrogen and amino acids.

Abstract:
Two experiments were conducted to evaluate the hydrolysis of fiber content in palm kernel meal (PKM) by sheep rumen liquor enzyme and to know the apparent digestibility coefficient of hydrolyzed PKM for catfish Pangasius hypophthalmus. The first trial examined effectivity of sheep rumen liquor enzyme to decrease crude fiber content of PKM. The added volume of sheep rumen liquor enzyme was 0, 20, 40, 60, 80, and 100 mL/kg PKM and then it was incubated for 0, 12, and 24 hours. A factorial completely randomized experimental design consisted of 2 variables and triplicates were selected. The second trial was conducted to evaluate the apparent digestibility coefficients of hydrolized PKM for catfish. Apparent digestibility coefficients were determined using chromic oxide indicator added to both reference and test diets. The feed ingredients used in the trial were hydrolyzed PKM (PKMe) and unhydrolyzed PKM (PKM). Ten fishes with weighing around 20 g were used in the trial and held in 80 l tanks. Feces were collected from three replicate groups of fish using a fecal collection column attached to fish rearing tank. PKM hydrolyzed with 100 mL/kg and incubated for 24 hour showed the lowest crude fiber content (6.99%) among the treatments (P<0.05). Apparent digestibility coefficient of hydrolyzed PKM was 57.57% compared with unhydrolyzed PKM 15.31%. Based on the evaluation in those parameters it was concluded that sheep rumen liquor enzyme added to PKM was effective to decrease crude fiber content of PKM and improve apparent digestibility coefficient of PKM for catfish.

Abstract:
The aim of this study was to determine crude protein, fibre and phytic acid in vitro digestibility of selected legumes and buckwheat products. All analyses except the phytic acid contents were performed in the line with the Commission Regulation (EC) No. 152/2009. A modified version of Holt’s Method was used for phytic acid (phytate) determination. None of all samples contained more than 11% of moisture. Soybeans are rich in crude protein; they contain nearly 40% of this compound. The content of crude protein in buckwheat flours was about 14%. The highest amount of phytate was found in common beans and soybeans-about 2 g/100 g of dry matter. On the other hand, the lowest phytate content was observed in buckwheat pasta (< 1 g/100 g). The quantification of phytate in F. esculentum groats was 1.9 g per 100 g of dry matter. In vitro digestibility was determined using an incubator Daisy and pepsin enzymes and the combination of pepsin and pancreatin. The highest coefficient of crude protein digestibility was discovered to be in peels and wholemeal flour. The greatest fibre digestibility coefficients were obtained for peels, which contain about 65% of fibre in their dry matter. When pepsin was used, a higher phytic acid digestibility coefficient for G. max, Ph. vulgaris, peels, flour, groats and broken groats was observed; while when the combination of pepsin and pancreatin was used, higher phytic acid digestibility coefficients for peas, lentil and wholemeal flour were observed.

Abstract:
A total of 144 day-old Anak 2000 strain of broiler chicks were used in the study. A basal diet was formulated and supplemented at 0, 200, 400, 600 mg kg of MgSO4 to constitute four dietary treatments. The birds were randomly allotted to the four dietary treatment groups and replicated thrice (12 birds per replicate). The performance characteristics, rutrient digestion coefficients, Mg utilization coefficients and haematological and biochemical parameters of the birds were determined Feed conversion ratio, crude protein retention, Mg utilization and blood parameters were highest in birds fed diet containing 400mg kg MgSO4 There were significant (p<0.05) differences in the final body weight, weight gain, Feed Conversion Ratio (FCR), Protein Efficiency Ratio (PER) and crude protein retention Liver Mg content, Mg intake and excretion increased significantly in a dosage dependent manner. Nutrients digestibility increased significantly as Mg levels increased from 0 to 400mg though, digestibility coefficients of Mg were significantly (p>0.05) depressed across treatments. However, serum Mg, Mg digestibility coefficient and tissue Mg residue were similar across treatment groups. The results showed that inclusion of 400mg kg supplemental MgSO4 in practical broiler starter diets resulted in improved performance and nutrients digestibility of the birds.

Abstract:
Milho. Quirera de Arroz. Abstract Kinguios are one of the most important ornamental fish, however the studies about ingredients digestibility for this species are insufficient. The objective of this study was to determine apparent digestibility coefficients (ADC) of dry matter, gross energy and crude protein of energetic (broken rice, corn meal, and wheat bran) and proteic (soybean meal, fishmeal and poultry by-product meal) feedstuffs for goldfish (Carassius auratus). Chromium oxide III was used as an external marker. The digestibility values of dry matter and energy, in decreasing order, were higher for broken rice (97.19 and 94.55%), corn meal (76.61 and 77.65%) and wheat bran (45.43 and 48.83%) in energetic ingredients; and soybean meal (72.14 and 73.54%), poultry by-product meal (61.77 and 69.50%) and fish meal (47.48 and 60.65%) in proteic ingredients. Protein digestibility values were higher for soybean meal (96.11%) and corn meal (90.77%) and the lowest values were observed for fishmeal (75.53%) and wheat bran (73.06%). In general, broken rice and soybean meal nutrients were more efficiently used by fish. Although all the studied ingredients are suitable for use in diets for goldfish, wheat bran should be used with caution because of its low digestibility. Keywords: Carassius auratus. Abstract A feeding trial was carried out to assess the effect of dietary chromium supplementation on apparent nutrient digestibility coefficient (%) of gelatinized and non-gelatinized corn in Cirrhinus mrigala fingerlings for 90 days. Using various levels of chromium chloride hexahydrate six test diets designated as T1 (G/0.0 Cr2Cl3.6H2O mg Kg-1), T2 (NG/0.0 Cr2Cl3.6H2O mg Kg-1), T3 (G/0.2 Cr2Cl3.6H2O mg Kg-1), T4 (NG/0.2 Cr2Cl3.6H2O mg Kg-1), T5 (G/0.4 Cr2Cl3.6H2O mg Kg-1) and T6 (NG/0.4 Cr2Cl3.6H2O mg Kg-1) were prepared. Results showed highest apparent digestibility coefficient (ADC) of nutrients dry matter, crude lipid and gross energy in test diet T5 that was gelatinized and supplemented with chromium 0.4 mg/Kg while, for crude protein higher value of nutrient digestibility was recorded in T3 test diet (G/0.2 Cr2Cl3.6H2O mg/Kg). It was concluded that chromium supplementation with gelatinized corn in fish (Cirrhinus mrigala) diet can improve the nutrients digestibility more efficiently.

Abstract: Three experiments were set to evaluate the effects of adding different levels of mannanoligossacharides (MOS, prebiotic) to the diet of piglets on their performance, development of intestinal mucosa, physiological parameters, digestibility and metabolism.. Corn and soybean meal were the major feed components. The first experiment evaluated the development and occurrence of diarrhea in 30 female piglets at 22 and 63 days of age, with an initial weight of 6.28 l 1.40 kg. Prebiotic additions to the diets worsen the growth performance of animals in Phase 3, but did not influence on the diarrhea incidence. The second experiment evaluated the morphometry of the small bowel, liver and pancreas weight, and the pH of stomach, small bowel and cecum contents. Fifteen female piglets were used at 22 and 63 days of age, with an initial weight of 5.74 l 0.93 kg. Both experiments were arranged in randomized blocks design to control initial weight difference, with the following treatments: positive control PC (base diet + antibiotic); negative control - NC (base diet); NC + 0.25% of prebiotic; NC + 0.50% of prebiotic; NC + 0.75% of prebiotic. No significant difference was observed in any of the studied parameters. In the third experiment, nutrient and energy digestibility were determined in feeds containing prebiotic (0.5%) or not (control). Sixteen castrated male pigs weighing 24.8 l 2.79 kg were used, and randomized blocks design was used so blocks controlled replications during time. Nutrient digestibility and feed energy were determined through the total feces collection method, using ferric oxide as fecal marker. The digestibility coefficient of the mineral matter and the digestible mineral matter were higher (P<0.05) in the control feed than in the feed containing prebiotic...(Complete abstract, click electronic address below)

Abstract:
Tannic acid was shown to increase weight loss, and total excretion of endogenous dry matter, nitrogen, uric acid, amino acids, energy and minerals (calcium, magnesium and phosphorus) in broilers. There was a positive linear correlation between the amount of tannic acid dosed, and the weight and endogenous losses. A variation in the excretion of individual amino acids and minerals in response to dosed tannic acid was also noted. The mechanisms of increased endogenous losses of the birds as influenced by tannic acid were investigated and discussed. Feeding gelatin and casein significantly reduced the adverse effects of tannic acid on weight and endogenous losses. There were also significant improvements in digestibility coefficients and metabolisable energy values of protein in tannic acid dosed birds when the amount of the protein increased. Although in birds not dosed with tannic acid, casein had a higher digestibility and metabolisable energy compared to gelatin, tannic acid dosed birds showed greater improvements in digestibility coefficients when receiving gelatin. The above contrast was possible because of the higher affinity of gelatin for tannic acid compared to the casein. Polyethylene glycol (PEG) was shown to alleviate the weight and endogenous losses of tannic acid dosed birds not receiving protein. Polyethlene glycol also reduce the endogenous losses as well as improved the digestibility coefficients and metabolisable energy values of tannic acid dosed birds when receiving the lower amounts of gelatin (6g) or casein (6 and 12g). However, the effect of PEG was less apparent in tannic acid dosed birds receiving the higher amounts of gelatin (12 and 18g) and casein (18g). In conclusion, the presence of tannins in poultry diets are likely to increase the endogenous losses of organic materials as well as minerals, but this is likely to depend on the type and amount of diet ingredients such as proteins and additives (eg. PEG).

Pace, Steven Alan. "Feeding frequency and water temperature impact apparent digestibility coefficients of sablefish (Anoplopoma fimbria)." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/43915.

Abstract:
Integrated multi-trophic aquaculture (IMTA) is a sustainable form of polyculture that holds promise in alleviating sustainability and environmental concerns facing current aquaculture practices. For sablefish (Anoplopoma fimbria) to be considered for use in IMTA systems, information on the digestibility of the diets by this species is needed. These data are critically important in establishing the necessary relationships between various species in IMTA networks. The effects of feeding frequency and water temperature on the apparent digestibility coefficients of juvenile sablefish were assessed in two separate experiments. In experiment 1 the effect of feeding frequency on apparent digestibility of a commercial feed (supplemented with chromic oxide as an indigestible marker) was determined by feeding juvenile sablefish either once, twice, or three times per day. In experiment 2 the effect of water temperature on apparent digestibility coefficients of the feed was determined in groups of sablefish reared at 8 ºC and 11.5 ºC. In both experiments the feed and faeces were analyzed for chromic oxide, ash, moisture, protein, and energy content and the resulting data were used to calculate apparent digestibility coefficients (ADC) for crude protein (CP), gross energy (GE), and organic matter (OM). Results from Experiment 1 indicate that feeding frequency had an effect on all ADC; with lower values of digestibility found with higher feeding frequencies (p ≤ 0.05). In Experiment 2 fish maintained at 11.5 ᵒC had higher ADC compared to those at 8.0 ˚C (p ≤ 0.05). This new information will be applied to a future IMTA ecosystem model, in an effort to enhance system efficiency.

Owing to the potential of utilization of residual feed intake as tool for genetic selection becomes indispensable the studies that looking for understand the variables influence RFI, principally data from cattle of Nellore breed, consist with Brazilian reality. The aim of this study was to evaluate the apparent digestibility of diet of Nellore bulls classified by residual feed intake (RFI). One hundred and twenty Nellore bulls were used , with body weight (BW) of 392.5 ± 47.15 kg. The animals were maintained in a feedlot with individual pens and fed with the same diet for 83 days. The animals were fed ad libitum and the diet was composed of sorghum silage, sugarcane bagasse and concentrate, in relation 33:67 (V: C) in dry matter. The animals were weight at the beginning of the trial and every 28 days after the solid feed restriction. The refused and offered fed were weight to measure the daily feed intake. RFI was calculate by difference between the observed intake and estimated intake what was obtained through a multiple regression equation of feed intake, average daily gain (ADG) and metabolic body weight (MBW) of the animals. On eighth week was realized a digestibility assay. To estimate the fecal production was used indigestible neutral detergent fiber (NDFi) as internal marker. The randomized design was used for statistical analysis. The ADG and BC were the same for different RFI groups (P>0.05), despite of low RFI animals showed lower feed intake (P<0.05) than medium and high RFI. However, the digestibility coefficient did not differ between the RFI groups (P>0.05). In contrast, the apparent digestibility of NFC was negative correlated (– 0,23) with the RFI.

Abstract:
Important to the evaluation of potential feed ingredients for inclusion in fish diets should be their digestibility and amino acid requirement so that feeds can be formulated on a digestible basis rather than a gross nutrient basis. This thesis established techniques for faecal collection, the validity of digestibility markers, it determined apparent digestibility coefficients for various novel feed ingredients, and it established the optimal lysine requirement for Argyrosomus japonicus, which was used to estimate each of the essential amino acid requirements by using the ideal protein concept. There were no significant differences in dry matter apparent digestibility coefficients when faeces were collected by stripping (77.0 %), dissection (80.1 %) or settlement (83.5 %). Faecal collection by the settlement method produced the most reliable digestibility data. Apparent digestibility coefficients for dry matter, crude protein and energy calculated using acid-insoluble ash were higher (84.0 %, 93.2 % and 93.0 %, respectively) than those using chromic oxide (55.7 %, 79.1 % and 78.2 %) and titanium dioxide (58.6 %, 79.7 % and 80.5 %). The magnitude of variation in digestibility coefficients obtained using acid-insoluble ash was always lower than that obtained with the other markers. Therefore, acid-insoluble ash was preferred as a dietary marker. Using the above protocol, protein and amino acid digestibility of some animal and plant protein ingredients were evaluated in a series of experiments. The first trial compared the apparent digestibility coefficients of some animal products included as single protein source in the test diets. Apparent protein digestibility values were 84.5 %, 83.8 %, 85.8 % and 83.1 % for fishmeal-prime, fishmeal-standard, poultry meal and pork meal, respectively. Apparent digestibility coefficients for poultry meal were comparable to those of fishmeal, which indicate its potential as a substitute for fishmeal in the diets of A. japonicus. The second trial determined the apparent coefficients of plant and animal protein sources included at 30 % into a practical reference diet (70 %). Apparent protein digestibility ranged from 92.4 % in sunflower meal to 85.5 % in corn gluten meal. Soybean meal is a promising feed ingredient in A. japonicus due to the high apparent digestibility of its protein (92.0 %) and essential amino acid digestibility (mean average 91.4 %). A fundamental assumption in fish feed formulation is that the digestibility of nutrients is additive, i.e., digestibility of a nutrient in one ingredient does not interact with the digestibility of the same nutrient in another ingredient. In the third trial, additivity of feed ingredients was tested using pork meal and poultry meal. The results indicate that the apparent digestibility coefficient of animal protein ingredients could be calculated from compound diets to accurately determine protein and amino acid digestibility in A. japonicus, and possibly other carnivorous fish species. Dietary essential amino acid requirements were determined for juvenile A. japonicus in two trials. A dose-response study was conducted using crystalline lysine to determine the optimal requirement of dietary lysine for A. japonicus. Optimal dietary lysine was estimated at 31.7 g kg-¹ dry diet, corresponding to 73.5 g kg-¹ of dietary protein, based on specific growth rate and broken-line segmented regression analyses. Dietary requirements for other essential amino acids ranged from 22 g kg-¹ (histidine) to 71 g kg-¹ (leucine) crude protein. The results of the present study provided a research tool that could be used to assess and verify the conclusions of earlier dietary work on A. japonicus and in further studies to develop least cost diet formulations for this species. The study also adds to the knowledge of the nutritional requirements of A. japonicus by providing information on the digestibility of plants and animal protein ingredients. It also contributes to future dietary research for this species because this study determines, for the first time, the most suitable methods for investigating the digestibility of raw materials for A. japonicus.

Aimed to determine the energy values and the coefficients of different foods with broilers at different ages, two experiments were conducted: A digestibility and a performance trial. In the digestibility experiment the foods used were corn, soybean meal, soybean processed by steam heated, meat and bone meal, poultry by-produtct, fish meal, wheat bran, crude soybean oil and poultry fat. It was using the method of total excreta collection, with five trials, divided into five age groups (1-8, 11-18, 21-28, 31-38 and 41-48 days old). Were used 675, 450, 225, 180 and 180 broilers, respectively, in a completely randomized design with nine treatments and four replicates, totaling 36 experimental units. The second experiment evaluated the performance of broilers and the carcass yield using diets with the metabolizable energy values of corn, soybean meal and soybean oil obtained on the digestibility experiment at different ages. The animals were divided into stages 1-7, 8-21, 22-42 and 43-49 days of age. Four experiments were conducted, divided in phases according to ages: pre-starter, starter, grower and finish, were used, respectively 924, 924, 840 and 672 birds randomly distributed in 42 experimental units in a completely randomized design with seven treatments and six repetitions. At 42 and 49 days old two birds per pen were slaughtered to determine carcass yield, cuts and abdominal fat. Among the plant foods studied, the lower coefficients of apparent digestibility were obtained with wheat bran. Among the animal foods, the meat and bone meal had lower CMA and CMAn. Were adjusted to the LRP model the equations to the CMA of corn, soybean meal and soybean processed by steam heated. Other foods (except meat and bones meal) fitted to the linear regression model. The equations show that the digestibility of energy tends to increase with age, with the exception for soybean meal, which had higher digestibility with young birds. It follows that the age of the birds influences in the determinate of metabolizable energy value of foods. As a result of performance in the pre-starter and finishing just the feed conversion was significant. Already in starter and growth, there was significant difference in feed conversion and daily and medium weight gain. In slaughter at 42 days old, only the percentage of abdominal fat was significant
