The replacement of the water mains from Touch to Stirling involved the digging of 42 trenches within the historic core of Stirling. This work has highlighted the presence and survival of waterlogged medieval middens within this historic centre which have been destroyed by piecemeal developments within the burgh. During this project a waterlogged midden deposit was revealed in Broad Street (Trench 29) and found to contain both carbonised and uncarbonised plant remains, animal bones, leather, wood offcuts and industrial waste. The age composition of the main pipelines of Russia significantly exceeds the period of their standard operation, which necessitates the provision of their reliable, trouble-free operation sometimes in difficult environmental conditions. Timely delivery of the required amount of hydrocarbon raw materials to various regions of our country and abroad depends on the quality and speed of the repair work. The speed of the pipeline overhaul, which consists in replacing old pipes with new ones, depends on the effectiveness of the entire repair string as a whole. The main excavation mach

The behavioural repertoire of the Scopimerinae crab, Dotilla fenestrata, is the result of a juxtaposition of rigid and plastic patterns, as an adaptation to the intertidal habitat. On the one hand, the activity of D. fenestrata can be classified in a number of stereotyped behavioural patterns, the occurrence of which may change throughout the low water or on the basis of the crabs' relative size, according to an expected schedule. For example, digging is more pronounced in larger individuals and mostly occurs when the crab emerges or just before it seals itself inside the burrow at the floodin

Climate variability will continue to impact the spatial and temporal variability of soil moisture in different landscapes across the world; and in turn the variability may affect crop production. Non-flood areas in the Namibian Kwalala Landscape of Zambezi (NKLOZ) region are generally relegated to second place, as somewhat marginal for the successful production of major crops such as maize (Zea mays L.). Even when flood water has receded, non-flooded areas which get affected during floods, are still avoided for crop production. This is because residual moisture following the rainy season, is s

Caddo ceramic vessels were collected at the W. O. Ziegler Farm (41WD30) and Claude Burkett (41WD31) sites in 1930 during archaeological investigations in Wood County by The University of Texas. The one vessel from the W. O. Ziegler Farm site, located in the Lake Fork Creek drainage in the upper Sabine River basin, was found in 1918 at a depth of ca. 1.2 m by the landowner while digging a storm cellar. University of Texas archaeologists purchased the vessel in August 1930. The Claude Burkett site is in the Big Sandy Creek basin in the upper Sabine River basin. The landowner found two ceramic ve

The Peoria Quarry complex was first recognized as representing prehistoric activities by geologist Walter P Jenny in 1891. Jenny, who was studying the zinc and lead mines in southwestern Missouri and adjacent areas, made collections from the Peoria extractive area and submitted these specimens along with an introductory letter to Mr. G. K Gilbert of the United States Geological Survey. The latter contacted William H. Holmes, who visited the location in late October of that year (Holmes 1894:7-8). Prior to the evaluation of Jenny, the site was referred to as "old Spanish mines" because the loca

ABSTRACT. Geophysical surveys were accomplished in Bahia, Brazil, and they aimed at detecting resistivity and/or IP geophysical anomalies that may be correlated to large quartz mass occurrences that, in some cases, may have economic interest (hyaline high-quality quartz or quartz with rutile inclusions). These quartz masses occur in granitic rocks. The indirect geophysical detection of quartz masses was possible, however it could not differentiate the aforementioned types of quartz. After digging wells and trenches, the presence of milky quartz masses, without economic interest, was confirmed.

This article discusses a collection of ancestral Caddo ceramic and lithic artifacts found at the Robert Richey site in northern Van Zandt County in East Texas. The site is in a pasture on an upland landform facing year-round flowing Caney Creek about 130-180 m to the east, a northern-flowing tributary that merges with the Sabine River about 2.2 miles to the north. The site lies within the flood pool of the long-defunct Mineola Reservoir, but the Robert Richey site was not recorded at the time of the early 1970s archaeological survey of the reservoir. Hundreds of thousands of Australian children were born in the shadow of the Great War, fathered by men who had enlisted between 1914 and 1918. Their lives could be and often were hard and unhappy, as Anzac historian Alistair Thomson observed of his father’s childhood in the 1920s and 1930s. David Thomson was son of a returned serviceman Hector Thomson who spent much of his adult life in and out of repatriation hospitals (257-259) and whose memory was subsequently expunged from Thomson family stories (299-267).
