Abstract:
Abstract Introduction Few studies have evaluated objective sleep measures and longitudinal neurocognitive decline, particularly in middle-age or Hispanic/Latino adults. We evaluated prospective associations between actigraphy-defined sleep and 7-year neurocognitive change among Hispanic/Latino adults. We hypothesized that sleep duration would be associated with neurocognitive decline. Methods We analyzed data from 1,036 adults 45-64 years of age from the Hispanic Community Health Study/Study of Latinos (HCHS/SOL), a multi-center prospective cohort study of diverse community-dwelling Hispanic/L

Theoretical aspect of the study of the word-building field of Middle English occupational names with the suffix -man is given in the article. The investigation of word-building productiveness of this suffix in the Middle English proved to be urgent in modern linguistics. The complex derivational field of Middle English occupational names is studied in the article. The main ways of word-building on the basis of proper English stems are determined. The results of our investigation prove the affix –man to be productive in the Middle English period. The complex word-building field of the 563 Middl

In the history of English one finds a mixture of V2 and non-V2 word order in declaratives for several hundred years, with frequencies suggesting a relatively gradual development in the direction of non-V2. Within an extended version of a cue-based approach to acquisition and change, this paper argues that there are many possible V2 grammars, differing from each other with respect to clause types, information structure, and the behavior of specific lexical elements. This variation may be formulated in terms of micro-cues. Child language data from present-day mixed systems show that such grammar

English teachers at junior middle schools often employ traditional vocabulary teaching techniques such as L1 equivalents, word lists, pictures, and word formation rules. They reinforce the students' retention of vocabulary by asking them to read aloud the words repeatedly and copy the new words as homework. In this study, suggestions are given to improve English vocabulary teaching techniques at junior middle schools.

Abstract:
Word Pairs in Late Middle English Prose investigates the use of word pairs (WPs) occurring in various English prose texts in the late Middle English period, i.e. in the fourteenth- and fifteenth-centuries. The research question addressed is a stylistic one: is there a relationship between the use of WPs and the genres of these texts? Characteristics of WPs investigated in the study include (1) the normalized frequency of WPs, (2) the etymological makeup of WPs and (3) repetition of WPs. First, the analysis of WPs in all Chaucer’s prose texts is conducted in comparison with two controls as a pr

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of word processing on the quality of written expression of students with learning disabilities identified in the area of written expression. A examination of existing research revealed that most studies do not focus on word processing independent of writing instruction. Therefore, the consensus among researchers that word processors make a difference is limited by the influence of instruction within the research setting. Therefore, this study sought to determine the impact made solely by word processing by controlling for instruction. The

In the first part, the compilation of the manuscript is analysed. I suggest that the manuscript was copied mainly by one individual scribe living in Constantinople at the end of the thirteenth century. Abstract The paper presents a pilot study investigating the extent of sense sharing between loanwords in Middle English and their etyma in French and Latin, undertaken as part of a new three-year project. Fifty loanwords have been examined, with all senses in the borrowing and donor language(s) recorded using the major historical dictionaries. These have been standardised and mapped onto a framework using the categories of the Historical Thesaurus of English (Kay et al. 2022) to allow comparison.
