Abstract:
Exfoliated graphite has attracted significant research interest, especially with respect to composite manufacturing as a sheet shape material for enhancing their mechanical, electrical, and thermal properties with cost-effectiveness. It has been proved in different researches that size of nanoparticles plays a vital role and has significant effect. So, in this study, exfoliated graphite with three different sizes i.e. 50 mesh (large dimension), 100 mesh (medium size), and 150 mesh (small size) are integrated in epoxy to examine their effect on the mechanical/electrical/thermal performance of the material and for each mesh size range of 0.5 wt.% to 20 wt.% is utilized. These three systems of reinforced epoxy with different size of exfoliated graphite are evaluated in DIGIMAT simulation software by investigating their electrical, thermal and mechanical properties. The numerical results showed that integration of exfoliated graphite in neat epoxy drastically improved its electrical, thermal, and mechanical performance. In addition, it was found that the use of the bigger size was more effective on the performance of the material, which is probably because of the enhanced connectivity between the structuring sheets. Moreover, a gradual increase in properties is observed with increasing the percentage of exfoliated graphite content in each system. This numerical study was developed in accordance to validate the experimental study conducted by Debelak et al. This study further provides the evidence of the appropriateness of the DIGIMAT simulation as an investigational load in relevant research.

Abstract:
This study establishes a model for polymer-bonded explosives (PBX) using Digimat-FE. The model identifies the relationship between the material’s effective elastic modulus and the explosive particle volume fraction, shape and gradation, and porosity, as well as other factors. Further, finite element analysis of the stress distribution of the PBX composite material is performed, and the mathematical models between the ultrasonic attenuation coefficient, particle volume fraction, and ultrasonic frequency are established. Finally, an efficient ultrasonic nondestructive testing system is designed to determine the stress distribution and fine crack groups in the material. Experimental results indicate that the relative error of stress detection is within 15%, which meets the requirements of engineering applications.

Abstract:
In this work, we compare the experimental and calculated results obtained in the numerical simulation of uniaxial tension of specimens of metal plates with a thickness of 0.7 mm. For modeling, the Digimat-FE (MSC) system was used, which in numerical calculations uses the finite element solver of the Marc software package (MSC). It is shown that for samples without coatings, the found theoretical values of the critical load quite well correspond to the points on the experimental diagrams at which the dependence of the load and displacement ceases to be linear. For specimens with coatings, the critical loads are significantly lower, and for their description it is necessary to obtain a refined estimate taking into account the effect of residual stresses.

Abstract:
Paper is devoted to the automation of processing the results of measurements of mechanical characteristics of plated specimens and the creation of a mathematical model of anisotropy material. Methods of conducting tensile and flexural tests are described. Developed in MATLAB tools for automation of processing results of experiments are proposed. Tools can be used for interpretation of the results of strength tests of isotropic and composite materials. The advantage of the developed tools is batch processing, which allows processing the results of a large series of experiments. The tools system was tested when creating a model of short-reinforced composite material. An example of the use of test results when constructing the Digimat material model and using this model to predict the stress-strain state of anisotropic structures is presented.

Abstract:
Nowadays short fibre reinforced polymers are often used in load carrying structural parts. Compared to continuous fibre reinforced polymers they exhibit a more complex morphology. Hence the determination of the strength is a difficult but important task. Therefore this was the objective of this research. The strength of short fibre reinforced polymers was numerically determined for low-speed to high-speed strain rates for specimens with different fibre orientations. For the failure modelling the micromechanical approach “First pseudo grain failure” in Digimat was used. The parameters for the material and failure description were determined with the reverse engineering method. Integrated finite element simulations<br />were performed to validate the material and failure models by tensile and bending tests with different specimens. The comparison of the results of the experiments and simulations showed low deviation.

Abstract:
The effective properties of metal matrix composites (MMCs) depend on matrix material and reinforcement property specifications as well as bonding at interphase. The use of numerical methods such as finite element (FE) and mean field homogenization (MFH) can assist in predicting MMC properties thus reducing time and cost of optimizing composite properties through experiments. In the present work, a multiscale representative volume element (RVE) of the microstructure of reduced graphene oxide (rGO) reinforced Aluminium (Al) matrix composite (rGO/Al) is created in MSC DigiMat and analysed using Abaqus software. The effect of porosity and rGO reinforcement on thermal conductivity and strength of the rGO/Al composites is studied. The variation in thermal conductivity between FE-RVE and experimental data is a maximum of 2.2% and a minimum of 0.07% for rGO reinforcement of 1 wt.% and 3 wt.% respectively. The results show good agreement between FE-RVE simulation, MFH and experimental data. This approach can provide an efficient technique for selecting matrix and reinforcement phase properties for MMC fabrication. Abstract:
Powertrain mounts' purpose is to mount the engine and the gearbox in the car. Besides that, it isolate the body from the powertrain movements and road excitation. The most common material in powertrain mounts bracket is aluminum but lately, fibre reinforced polymer (FRP) has been acting as a substitute for the aluminum. The major drive forces for the change is the possibility to decrease the weight and improve the attribute noise, vibrations and harshness (NVH). The main objective of this study was to compare aluminum and FRP in order to find advantages and disadvantages for use in a powertrain mount bracket. FRP's have in earlier investigations at Volvo Cars been assumed to be isotropic, although it is orthotropic due to fiber orientation. Hence, a comparison between isotropic and orthotropic material properties for the powertrain mount bracket was conducted. There was no established method for modelling orthotropic materials available at the powertrain mount department, so a suggestion of a work process was presented in this thesis. Information regarding FRP, as well as a comparison to aluminum was presented in a literature study. The different materials and material models were compared in series of stress-strain and eigenmode FEM analyses. The results from the stress-strain analyses evinced that the design for the aluminum bracket can withstand the loads without exceeding the design limit. In the FRP bracket with orthotropic material properties, the design limit was exceeded for the load cases with the highest load. The results from the stress-strain and eigenmode analyses of the isotropic and orthotropic material models showed significant differences. According to the isotropic material model, the bracket could withstand the loads, and the eigenfrequencies was 25-30% higher compared to the orthotropic material model. The conclusions drawn from this study was that FRP's may be an advantageous material for the powertrain mount bracket, compared to aluminum. The FRP's bracket will decrease the cost, weight, and carbon footprint as well as improve the NVH. However, difficulties of using FRP's have been observed and need to be further investigated. The main difficulties identified are creep, fatigue, moisture absorption, and aging. This study has also proved that orthotropic material properties must be included in order to understand the material behavior and find critical areas.

Abstract:
A popular way to reduce weight in industrial products without compromising the strength or stiffness is to replace components made of metal by plastics that have been reinforced by glass fibers. When fibers are introduced in a plastic, the resulting composite usually becomes anisotropic, which makes it much more complex to work with in simulation software. This thesis looks at modeling of such a composite using the multi-scale material modeling tool Digimat. An injection molding simulation of a brush cutter casing made of a short fiber reinforced plastic has been performed in order to obtain information about the glass fiber orientations, and thus the anisotropy, in each material point. That information has then been transferred over from the injection mesh to the structural mesh via a mapping routine. An elasto-viscoplastic material model with failure has been employed and calibrated against experimental data to find the corresponding material parameters. Lastly, a finite element analysis simulating a drop test has been performed. The results from the analysis have been compared with a physical drop test in order to evaluate the accuracy of the methodology used. The outcome has been discussed, conclusions have been drawn and suggestions for further studies have been presented.

Abstract:

We are in an emerging digital society where we are increasingly dependent on the mastery of IT and digital technologies to better carry out our everyday tasks. They cover everything from keeping in touch with family and friends to pay bills and declare. At the same time there are those who have not learned how to use the new technology and live their lives outside of the digital society. What happens to these people, in a society that is becoming increasingly digitized? Do they take harm by being in digital exclusion? It looks like this are issues that will not become less important as digital technology constantly changes. Technology of the future will be equally undesirable for tomorrow's elderly as today's technology is undesirable for today’s elderly.

This research report looks at how to find a way to get those who involuntary find themselves in digital isolation to get an entry to digital use and become part of the digital society. The report makes use of the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) and Senior Technology Acceptance & Adoption Model (STAM), models developed to predict whether users will accept or reject a system, to find out how you may be able to get users to want to use and learn a system.

In a study reminiscent of an experiment in which four participants with low experience in IT use has been testing a simple Content Management System (CMS), and started to use IT in their work, this report concludes that there are tendencies showing that workplace could be an interesting entrance when you are trying to create an interest in IT and digital technology in those who are in the digital exclusion.

Abstract:
The aim of this study was to look at how digital career counseling works in Sweden and if it needs to evolve. The digital and global world we live in today calls for a change in approach, this includes career counseling. Because of Covid-19 more schools and workplaces have had to implement digital solutions. Two questions were chosen:•What advantages and disadvantages can be found with the implementation of digital career counseling?•What can career counselors do to create an appropriate environment and good relationships with the clients in a digital context?Theories taken into account are communication, context, career counseling models, the professional dialogue, the career counselor’s skills and the possibility of anonymity. The method was a qualitative one, with semi-structured interviews for which the respondents was selected based on expertise and knowledge. The result showed that there was no big difference between career counseling in a traditional context compared to a digital one. The difference lied in making sure the technology works and knowing that the non-verbal communication might deteriorate. The main differences was managing the technology, controlling the environment seen through the camera, and awareness that the non-verbal communication might deteriorate. Another discovery was that anonymity in the form of having the choice of turning on the camera was a positive thing, where people open up easier.

Abstract:

Neurodegenerative diseases affect the cognition of millions of people worldwide, degrading their quality of life and placing a burden on their families. Early identication can be extremely beneficial in treating or slowing down the onset of these diseases. One technique used to identify early warning signs is the use of cognitive tests. Unfortunately, grading these tests is subjective. In this study, we quantitatively evaluated the digital Symbol Digit Test (dSDT), in which patients translate symbols into digits based on a given mapping. In collaboration with Dr. Penney of Lahey Clinic, we administered the dSDT to over 170 patients using a digitizing pen that measures its position on the page and the pressure applied. We developed support vector machine and logistic regression classifiers that indicate Alzheimer's Disease and Parkinson's Disease with an area under the curve of 0.957 and 0.963, respectively.

Abstract:
The herein paper tackles the issue of dimensional stability of composite materials from the perspective of characterization the overall linear coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) for different hybrid polymeric composite architectures tailored with the aim of lowering the manufacturing costs and fulfilling few design requirements in several engineering applications. The hybrid configurations are made of unidirectional carbon fibers (max. 1 or 2) embedded along with different combinations of E-glass woven roving or chopped E-glass strand mat as wear/chemical resistant, outside reinforcement layers. A polyester resin type was used as binder. The thermal properties were measured using a differential dilatometer DIL 402 PC/1 from NETZSCH GmbH (Germany) imposing a linear, monotonic temperature rise with 1 K/min from 20°C up to 250°C. Thermal cycling behavior was underlined by imposing two successive heating cycles upon each hybrid composite samples. Thermal strains temperature/time evolution and peak values are further analyzed to size the thermal aging effects. The experimental retrieved data will be further compared with the values obtained by running a micromechanical based approach simulation on the DIGIMAT software (from X-stream Engineering Inc., Luxembourg).

Abstract:
As the unsprung components of vehicle, lightweight wheel plays a significance role for handling stability and riding comfort. Besides, the energy saving effect of lightweight design for wheel is 1.2 to 1.3 times as much as that of components without rotating. Therefore, the lightweight design of wheel is an inevitable development tendency in future. For the wheel composed by long-fiber reinforced composites through injection process, the difference of fiber distribution and orientation at various positions leads to anisotropy on the macro performance. This paper explores a new type of high-performance thermoplastic composites (LGFTs) material reinforced by long glass fiber for lightweight wheel design. The dynamic impact simulations on the LGFT wheel with isotropic properties and anisotropic properties are conducted according to the ISO procedure, using the software Moldflow, Digimat, and Abaqus. The comparison of the simulation results demonstrates that the anisotropic properties of material have a significant effect on the impact characteristics of the wheel. The research in this paper is beneficial to improve the accuracy of the impact simulation on LGFT wheel, and also provides foundation for further lightweight design of the wheel.

Abstract:
Abstract This study developed microstructure-based finite element (FE) models to investigate the behavior of cold-sprayed aluminum-alumina (Al-Al2O3) metal matrix composite (MMCs) coatings subject to indentation and quasi-static compression. Based on microstructural features (i.e., particle weight fraction, particle size, and porosity) of the MMC coatings, representative volume elements (RVEs) were generated by using Digimat software and then imported into ABAQUS/Explicit. State-of-the-art physics-based modelling approaches were incorporated into the model to account for particle cracking, interface debonding, and ductile failure of the matrix. This allowed for analysis and informing on the deformation and failure responses. The model was validated with experimental results for cold-sprayed Al-18 wt.% Al2O3, Al-34 wt.% Al2O3, and Al-46 wt.% Al2O3 metal matrix composite coatings under quasi-static compression by comparing the stress versus strain histories and observed failure mechanisms (e.g., matrix ductile failure). The results showed that the computational framework is able to capture the response of this cold-sprayed material system under compression and indentation, both qualitatively and quantitatively. The outcomes of this work have implications for extending the model to materials design and under different types of loading (e.g., erosion and fatigue).
