Abstract:
Digital archives are not meant to be mere collections of digital artifacts organized for reference. It ought to be a record, providing evidence for dynamic digital cultural activities, because these activities form an organic and primary source of cultural information and artifacts. This paper investigates two national web archiving projects, argues for the need for greater attention to be paid to archival principles and shows how contextual elements can be retained in a collection. We will also demonstrate how some of these principles have been applied in the Asian Tsunami Web Archives via a web archival method called Web Sphere Analysis. In conclusion, we present a framework where existing and future web archives projects can incorporate Web Sphere analysis to transform their collection into a genuine Digital Archives and become a richer resource for future research.

Abstract:
Archival collections have particular properties that make physical and intellectual access difficult for researchers. This generates feelings of uncertainty in the researchers leading to a large burden of enquiries to the archive, many routine. In this thesis I investigate the information seeking behaviours of archival researchers and the distinct properties of the archive first through the respective literatures and then through a series of five studies. Using systems, data and researchers from the National Archives, these studies examine the nature of the enquiries archives receive across many channels, the in-person interactions between archivists and researchers in the reading rooms and the unmediated search behaviours of archival researchers. I proceed to outline the barriers inhibiting research progress and the techniques or 'regulators' used by researchers to surmount or mitigate these barriers. In the final two studies I develop and attempt to validate an instrument for measuring uncertainty in information seeking in large digital collections. This three factor (disorientation, prospect and preparedness) scale of archival uncertainty allows improvements to online archival systems to be effectively tested before implementation. I also propose system properties which seem likely to assist researchers to make progress given these factors and which could be tested using this instrument.

Abstract:

Abstract:

In order to efficiently manage the large amounts of video data stored in a digital video archive, computerized management systems must be developed for storing and making the video available to users. In this thesis, we study tertiary storage technologies and storage architectures for storing and retrieving digital video in video archives.

We evaluate serpentine tape as a storage medium for digital video. In order to increase the performance of storage systems using serpentine tape, we present and evaluate a detailed access-time model for serpentine tape and a novel scheduling algorithm for optimizing concurrent accesses to the tape. The scheduling algorithm is used for evaluating serpentine tape for storing images and video sequences. The main conclusion is that by using the access-time model and the proposed scheduling algorithm, it is possible to achieve significant improvements in initial latency, average access time, and the number of requests that can be served by a single tape drive.

Tertiary storage technologies including magnetic tape and DVD are evaluated for use in digital video archives. The evaluation is performed using a simulator of the storage system of a video archive. The simulation model is based on the architecture of the Elvira~II video archive server. Different configurations for the storage system are evaluated with regards to performance and cost. In the evaluation different allocation strategies, access distributions, and user loads are studied. The effect of using a cache based on magnetic disks is investigated.

The main conclusion is that the choice of architecture and storage technology for a video archive depends on the user generated load, the size of the requested video sequences, and the access distribution for the stored videos. It also depends on whether throughput, response time, storage cost, or cost per retrieved video is the main evaluation criterion. Furthermore, we show that a video archive based on DVD as the main storage technology outperforms a video archive using magnetic tape, and that including a relatively small disk cache in most cases improves the performance and reduces the total cost of the archive.

The ideas and results presented in this thesis are also useful outside the video archive context. The strategies and results are beneficial for applications that require hierarchical storage management systems for managing large data volumes.

Abstract:
In this thesis we propose a digital archive model that permits users to access digitized documents easily, to study their content, to search them, as well as to enrich them by annotations or alternative classifications. The model contains a management system to store, visualize, organize, search and annotate these documents. Moreover, since the annotation process is laborious, reading a manuscript page takes sometimes hours, a solution is proposed to publish these documents online and to offer annotation tools to different user types to facilitate the annotation creation by a larger audience. The integrated assistant is developed by using case-based reasoning, it reasons from the registered traces of users’ interaction with the system, to suggest some help to the current user

Maina, Job King'ori. "Enhancing digital heritage archives using gamified annotations." Master's thesis, University of Cape Town, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/26955.

Full text
Abstract:
In the context of digital heritage archives, we find heritage objects having intrinsic contextual and historical information. Capturing all that information is difficult, especially if that effort is left only to the professionals or institutions responsible for those digital heritage archives. In this study, we investigate how digital heritage archives can be enhanced using an annotation framework with a focus on gamification. So far, they have been focused on the collection of information and not really on the collaborative capabilities that they could have. We look at how we can add a collaborative element to an already existing digital heritage archive and incentivise users to engage with it more. This way, the owners present their data as the fixed content of the archive and the viewers are then able to present their contributions as annotations layered on the original work. Therefore, using gamified annotations as a proposed solution, we hypothesise that gamification could play an important role in giving the participants an incentive as to why they should be engaging with the digital heritage archive as well as guiding them to contribute relevant content. Through an experimental study, we found that gamified annotations do affect the number and quality of annotations submitted. We believe a successful implementation of a gamified annotation framework should go a long way to improve viewership, sharing, learning and debate around the content of the said digital heritage archives.

Abstract:
Abstract   The rapid ongoing technical development has led to increased production of digital records and transactions. In the domain of electronic archives, this has put pressure on the technical area in order to guarantee authenticity of preserved information over time. Time stamping techniques are one way to secure digital information at a certain point in time and can be employed to guarantee authenticity of digital information over time. This study examines the function of time stamping within the domain of electronic archives and is conducted with a qualitative method using semi-structured interviews on five Swedish organisations. The study is complemented with a case-study of the Swedish innovation company Enigio Time AB in order to gain understanding in time stamping techniques and their service time:stamp.                       The theoretical framework in this study is the records continuum model with the view of the continuity in records and its illumination of the point of creation. The international standard OAIS (Open Archival Information System) is used by several electronic models to manage digital information and is, in this study, used to analyse the management in record keeping within the five organisations.                       The conclusion is that this rapid technological development has complicated the management of secure digital records from manipulation and guaranteeing the authenticity in a long term perspective.                       The study further shows that organisations may guarantee that records will not change once they are received into the archive but the authenticity of them, before they were delivered, can never be confirmed. Since the modern information era produces and preserves enormous amounts of data, this has to start with the creation of the digital record where better structured metadata schemes are secured in time.

Abstract:
Storytelling presented in digital archives can provide indigenous communities with a voice needed to tell stories and thus enhance the society’s understanding for that community. The objective was to evaluate a digital archive prototype from a perspective of rendering Sami stories and storytelling. This was done by collecting data with the method Research through Design where a prototype was designed and demonstrated in two steps to the indigenous people of Scandinavia known as the Sami people. The findings suggest that the prototype can render Sami storytelling to some extent but that digital archives, in regard to indigenous cultures, must be designed with sensitive ethicalities in mind. These digital archives must also be designed so that immersive stories can be rendered whilst also providing the indigenous people the right to be prosumers in order to provide them the empowerment to own their own culture. These issues and future research are discussed in the paper.

Abstract:
With the development of internet and the trend of information system technology, the object of digital library research has extended to the application of digital archives. Basically, digital libraries store huge amounts of data, including text, image, map audio, video and illustration via electronic formats. Further more, digital libraries could be conveniently accessed through the Internet. As the research intention of network information systems, the critical technology in digital library research could be how to let users effectively harvest correct information from the digital library. Digital library users could discover, present, and organize knowledge among these data of digital libraries. The traditional library automation system, related applying technologies and protocols, such as MARC, Z39.50 and ISO 2709, could not totally match the requirement of digital archives. The purpose of this research is to find out how to effectively manage and apply the related technology of digital archive to handle the existing operation processes in library and the management requirement of digital archives. This paper discusses an evolution model of the related technology of library automation systems.

Abstract:
This master thesis aims to analyse the data curation situation and the decision-making processes of the archivists at the Swedish Peace Archives. With the theories in data curation and methodology in analysing both accessible web content and interviews, this thesis hopes to shed light on the institutional perspective in managing digital archives. By studying and analysing the empirical materials from the online archive websites and the database, the data curation theories are applied to locate the archive practices at different levels. The method in collecting qualitative data from interviews with the archivists gives insight into archive works and digitisation processes in the digital archives today.  The results show the complexity in data management from digitisation to curation, and digital archives as an information-intensive digital environment has caused the merge of humanities and archives scholarship. This shows the limitation in the data-centric digital humanities frameworks when discussing archive management and technical interoperability. A further study with more focus on individual institutions with their unique workflows, stakeholders, and material types in mind is therefore suggested.

Abstract:
The National Mission for Manuscripts of India, in association with UNESCO, completed a research study to assist in the development of legal and policy framework and protocols for promoting equitable access to documentary heritage, relevant to India and other South Asian countries. Entitled Legal and Policy Framework for Promoting Equitable Access to Documentary Heritage, the study seeks to accurately identify and critically examine the legal and policy framework for promoting equitable access to documentary heritage. The National Mission for Manuscripts is the most important institution in India dealing with bibliographic databases and the conservation and preservation of valuable manuscripts. The study covers the legal and policy framework which envelops the lifecycle of the Mission's work: access to manuscripts, their digitisation and creation of databases. By critically examining the legal rules in the practical context of the Missionâ s work, the research team has put together the first review of an initiative aimed at the protection of Indian traditional knowledge. The study illustrates working patterns of the Mission within the legal and policy framework of the country. It is a helpful sourcebook for understanding South Asian legal and policy framework for accessing documentary heritage collections. While the study does not set out to be the final word on these policy initiatives, it definitely makes significant progress in the policy debate and legal literature in this field. The conclusions presented in the form of draft legal agreements and policy recommendations will, with no doubt, be valuable tools for South Asian countries that share similar legal and policy framework within the sub-region.

Abstract:
Electronic journals unfold their most valuable features when they are inter-linked with other documents, archives and databases. These electronic journals need an archiving system that is based on a global concept. Archiving ensures "continued access indefinitely into the future of records stored in digital electronic form". Archiving system has to be flexible to adopt the new technological generation. The rapid pace at which technology becomes obsolete makes archiving an extremely expensive undertaking. The librarians are more concerned about the archiving of the electronic journals themselves, or getting access to the archives established by the publishers or the aggregators. This paper focuses on the issues related to the archiving of electronic journals in Physics and Astronomy by the publishers, aggregators and the consortia.

Ravenwood, Clare. "Selection of digital material for preservation in libraries, archives and museums." Thesis, Loughborough University, 2013. https://dspace.lboro.ac.uk/2134/13423.

Full text
Abstract:
Digital material has different preservation requirements than non-digital and is at greater risk of loss unless deliberate preservation activities are undertaken. Digital preservation is an on-going managed process designed to enable continued use of digital material for as long as necessary. Much of the digital preservation research to date has focused on understanding technical steps in preserving digital objects and there has been less attention paid to assumptions about selection and the conceptual underpinnings of practice. Selection is done, not conceptualised. Therefore the aim of this research was to investigate the theory and practice of selection for digital preservation in UK memory institutions. The objectives employed to achieve this aim were firstly to examine the underlying theory relating to selection in libraries, archives and museums of non-digital material. The research then went on to investigate who the stakeholders are in selection, how selection of digital material is performed and identifying the key influential factors in selection. An intensive, qualitative approach was used to complete these objectives. A thorough review of the literature provided a theoretical background to selection in libraries, archives and museums. Then preliminary data were gathered through a set of exploratory interviews with eight digital preservation experts in order to provide an overview of selection for digital preservation. The findings from these interviews then formed the basis for the second set of interviews with twenty five practitioners working in libraries, archives and museums. The views of practitioners were under-explored in the literature although it is they that perform selection. In addition to these interviews, twenty two current digital preservation policies were examined. This research has found that there is on the whole little change required for selecting digital material, in comparison to selecting non-digital material, although technical criteria relating to the ability of the institution to manage and preserve the material are of high importance. There is a clear assumption in institutions of selection leading only to permanent collecting, which should be questioned. This research has uncovered drivers to selection, including external funders, and barriers, which include a lack of confidence and knowledge on the part of practitioners in how to select and manage digital material. Concepts identified through this research provide a deeper understanding of selection for digital preservation in different contexts and encapsulate key factors underpinning selection. The concept of professionalism is a key factor; the need to be professional and ethical guide s practitioners through specific professional skills and knowledge. The practitioners become engaged with digital material and the level of engagement mirrors the way digital material is conceptualised by practitioners. Many stakeholders were identified, including managers, senior managers, users, creators and donors, funders, other organisations and IT staff. Relationships with stakeholders and the possible roles they play in selection were found to be key factors in selection. These findings contributed to the achievement of the final objective, which was to develop a conceptual model of key factors underpinning selection for of digital material for preservation. The conceptual model consists of five main concepts and their relationships: professionalism; relationships; organisational capabilities; material properties; and boundaries. There is a clear need for greater availability and access to training and networking opportunities for practitioners in order to increase engagement with digital material. Through this research, factors relating to selection have been identified and conceptualised. It has uncovered issues not previously addressed, in particular relating to the social aspect of selection. This research provides an understanding of the complexities of selection and the influences upon it.

Abstract:
This thesis considers the use and potential of digital technologies for those responsible for photographic collections in public libraries. Using the Birmingham Central Library as a case study, the research has explored how information comn1unication technologies have impacted on the way in which photographic in1ages are created, stored and disseminated. The study provides an overview of both the British library service and the role of archives within this public provision. Following an examination of the characteristics of digital media and a range of issues relating to the preservation, dissemination and economic exploitation of photographic il1aterials in digital form, the thesis goes on to adopt a variety of research strategies, including a number of empirical projects used to assimilate information relating to the practical application of information communication technologies by those working in public libraries. The major outcome of the research, identified in the later sections of the thesis, has been to n1ake a unique contribution to the field of knowledge relating to the provision of digital resources by those responsible for photographic collections residing in archives within public libraries in the United Kingdom. The conclusions to emerge from the theoretical and empirical research contribute to knowledge by providing current information about the utilisation of digital technologies for the purposes of enhancing access to photographic material held within public library archives, whilst also considering possible future developments relating to the area of investigation.

Abstract:
The discussion about custody that polarized the archival community regarding how to implement the preservation of digital records raised diverse issues related to Archival Science fundamentals and about how archival institutions would develop their functions of guardianship, preservation and access. Archival repositories were historically conceived as places to preserve authentic records and were connected to the administration. This bond was broken in the XIX century, when archives became primarily historical, with the focus on preserving sources of the past. The discussion on digital preservation is offering an opportunity to contemporaneous scholars to think about archives from the point of view of the creator, because the preservation of digital materials is continuous and starts at the moment of record creation. This reconnection with the administration means that it is possible for archives to become institutions of the present closely committed to the exercise of citizenship.

Full text
Abstract:
This self-instructional handbook is aimed at helping managers of community radio stations, FM radio stations, public service broadcasting agencies and any other organisations that deal with audio files in creating prototype archives of digital audio documents. In line with the needs of the community, the manual guides users in creating their proper archives with stable, free software like WINISIS, GenISIS and Greenstone. The book also mentions the URLs from where these software can be downloaded from. While free and open source software (FOSS) helps digital inclusion of citizens in developing countries by bringing within easy reach the socially useful applications, UNESCO's information processing tools help many grassroots institutions in disseminating information to local communities. Digital archive of a community radio station will be a kind of knowledge repository that contains collective wisdom of indigenous people, communities and institutions in the region. The South Asia sub-region is now at the nascent stage of community radio development, with the introduction of policy frameworks in India, Nepal and other countries. Community radio has a great development potential across the sub-region with ever increasing number of community radio stations. To maintain an archive of broadcasted contents is a legal obligation as a self-regulatory mechanism, however many stations are not equipped for doing this. Also community radio stations need to reuse and re-broadcast many of their archived contents. This publication has its genesis in the recommendations and proceedings of the UNESCO-supported two national events entitled respectively 'National Consultation on Community Radio for Practising and Potential Community Radio Operators in India' and 'National Consultation to Review Community Radio in Nepal', where community radio station managers felt the importance of archiving digital audio contents. This document can be considered as an authoritative self-instructional manual for digital archiving of multimedia contents and more specifically for community radio contents. The manual users may find it helpful in their daily work.

Abstract:
Many digital news archive systems in Taiwan are based on format description, not subject indexing. This requires users to know their background or the terminologies used, in order to retrieve information from these archives. This paper discusses how the original elements were indexed from various perspectives in Chinese digitized news archives. It also makes recommendations to improve the industry, including strengthening the process, connection, and description of news contents, organization, and management. This will enable cross-system retrieval and in-depth resource integration among systems.

Abstract:
This paper was presented as invited plenary keynote address.
This article surveys the cultural record in the digital environments and the current efforts to capture this record and circulate it as knowledge, documents, and collections in memory institutions, and provide a basis for the creation of new knowledge. The goals of digital preservation are interpreted in the light of recent arguments about the role of the humanities in providing access to the complete human experience, of the changing idea of the archive representing that experience, and of the roles of memory institutions in supporting the humanities project. Two sets of current preservation activities are identified and surveyed - web archiving (of national web spaces, web spheres) and curated collections of primary sources from the history web. The emerging forms of interpretive and point-of-view history, invented archives, and digital libraries capturing local history, everyday experience and community memory illustrate how digital media can support interpretive and multi-perspective historiography.

Abstract:
The subject of this master's thesis is how digitisation changes the understanding of textual archival matter. Drawing on document theory and media theory, the concept of digitisation is analysed as remediation, the repro - duction of one medium in another. A key theoretical assumption is that digitisation is not a neutral process, and conceptualising digitisation as remediation is a way of analysing the changed charasteristics of archival matter when represented in another medium. A tentative model for analysing remediated archival matter is presented, identifying three aspects or dimensions as crucial in understanding how remediation affects the interpretation of archival matter: the document dimension, the media dimension and the institutional dimension. The source material for this thesis are four instances of digitised archival material, each conceptualised and analysed as a case study. The four case studies are: a digitised archival volume from the archives of Swedish art museum Moderna Museet; the digitised typewritten manuscript of the poem ”De sju dödssynderna” (”The seven deadly sins”) by Swedish author and poet Karin Boye, available on the cultural heritage portal Alvin; a digitised handwritten notebook forming part of the manuscript for the novel To the Lighthouse by English author Virginia Woolf, available on the website Woolf Online; the digitised verdict from Swedish court of justice Kammarrätten (Administrative Court of Appeal) regarding the age rating for the film The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part One. It is argued that the digitised archival material in each case study has the character of a digital facsimile, whose charasteristics are dependent upon choices made in its production as well as mode of presentation. It is further argued that the characteristics of each digital facsimile shape and mediate the understanding of the archi - val matter, and that some kinds of information, e. g. textual information, are more easily represented than others, e. g. material information. In the light of these results, the changing role of the archive and the possibilities of different kinds of rese - arch are discussed. The original value of this master's thesis lies in its further development of the concept of re - mediation as a concept in archival science as well as deepening the understanding of the interpretative fra - meworks surrounding digitised archival matter. This is a two years master's thesis in Archive, Library and Museum studies.

Abstract:
Far from vanishing as romantically predicted, Native being remains present despite centuries’ efforts of erasure. Far from empty space or a blank page, the state of Oklahoma has always been and continues to be a site of transcultural negotiations. Native playwrights unghost—make visible—those shimmering glimmers when they re-present historical events. Centering the work of Native playwrights from Oklahoma-as-Indian-Territory, I in turn unghost—recover—the connections between historical crises dramatized by Native poets and playwrights and reenacted by historical interpreters in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, with nineteenth century archives and circulations. I elucidate a new genealogy of Oklahoma-as-Indian-Territory, where borders bend in genre, time, and space. The Native plays here share a time-weaving relationship to earlier historical crises, a resistance to false closure, a recycling of time-worn stereotypes in the service of their undoing. Unghosting Native playwrights can mean reviving those who have fallen out of print, as with Red Renaissance prodigy Hanay Geiogamah, and reclaiming those whose Native identity has been erased, as with Lynn Riggs, whose Green Grow the Lilacs became the largely unsung foundation of the musical Oklahoma!, as well as expanding the dramatic archive to capture plays only found online. My first chapter, “Staking Claims on Mixed-Blood Inheritance,” draws upon performance theorists Diana Taylor and Rebecca Schneider’s work in transcultural written and bodily archives to investigate two key repeated performances: the statehood mock wedding and the Land Run reenactments recently discontinued by the Oklahoma City Public Schools but still celebrated annually by schoolchildren across the state. Juxtaposing them with commemorative poetic performances by Diane Glancy, N. Scott Momaday, Joy Harjo, and LeAnne Howe, I situate these performances not as quirky local fun but as rituals of systemic colonial representational power. My second chapter, “Active States,” unghosts folk drama through Lynn Riggs’ pre-statehood play Green Grow the Lilacs and the collaboratively revised Trail of Tears outdoor spectacle produced for decades by the Cherokee Nation, including the extended material performances of these texts in playbills, a songbook, and a fine press illustrated edition. My third chapter, “Kitchen Table Worlds in Motion: Collaborations in Native New Play Development” examines four recent plays and the development institutions that support them, all breaking new ground in form yet recycling images and adapting texts and experiences from many archives: Hanay Geiogamah’s Foghorn, LeAnne Howe’s The Mascot Opera: A Minuet, Diane Glancy’s Pushing the Bear, and Joy Harjo’s Wings of Night Sky, Wings of Morning Light. My fourth and final chapter continues the exploration of recent work, yet on specific policy issues: the stolen bodies of residential schools and of looted funerary remains, and the ongoing repercussions of these instances of cultural genocide in courts and heritage sites today, as dramatized by Mary Kathryn Nagle and Suzan Shown Harjo in My Father’s Bones, Annette Arkeketa in Ghost Dance, and N. Scott Momaday’s in The Moon in Two Windows.

Abstract:
This study examines the efficacy of the Canadian Memory Fund to advantage the use of digital archives for the purposes of developing historical consciousness in Canadian students and life-long learners. The perceived significance of digital archives to this end is reflected in the launch of the Department of Canadian Heritage’s (PCH) Canadian Culture Online Program (CCOP) in 2000. Employing a qualitative research design, this study examines how PCH defined the challenges to Canadians’ historical memory, and conceived of a technological solution to this inherently cultural and educational challenge. Using a case study, the strategies deployed by the CBC and Radio-Canada digital archives units, funded recipients of the CMF, to achieve the intended goals of the CCOP, and whether the resulting websites meet the technical criteria for the study of historical consciousness, are examined.

Abstract:
The research presented in this thesis is about recordkeeping in the public sector, focusing especially on the relationship between the public administration and its archives, and selected aspects affecting the way this relationship is developing in the digital era. Two research questions are addressed: RQ1: What are ‘archives’ and ‘recordkeeping’ in the digital context and the developing e-government? RQ2: What are the indications of current and future challenges regarding the cooperation between public administration and archives? Six studies resulting in six papers form the basis of the thesis. Each study explores a unique aspect of how current developments, discussions, and decisions affect contemporary understanding and practices regarding archives and recordkeeping. Public records are authoritative information resources, crucial in the everyday lives of citizens. Public recordkeeping develops continuously alongside administrative practices, technological achievements, and political goals. Examples include the development of shared services within the public sector and the involvement of the private sector in public infrastructure projects through outsourcing. These processes are currently affected both by digital technologies, which offer new possibilities to create, use, and preserve records, and by e-government, characterized by the combination of information and communication technologies with organizational change to improve public services and democratic participation. In these processes, existing practices are reviewed and revised, and the concepts of ‘archives’ and ‘recordkeeping’ redefined. The research was pursued using an interpretive approach. The research methods used were concept analysis; discourse analysis; literary warrant analysis; phenomenography; critical theory; and the records continuum model as a theoretical structure. The results shows that common usage of the terms ‘archive’ and ‘recordkeeping’ is fluid and changing, which can make decision-making challenging and affect the relationship between archives and administration. Efforts to develop recordkeeping strategies may be hampered by factors related to the different ways in which the nature and role of archives and recordkeeping are perceived, including differing understandings of related concepts; varying discourses on what an archive (or e-archive) is or should be, and different ways of interpreting legal frameworks and their significance.

Abstract:
Following the Enlightenment, Western adherence to positivist theory influenced practices of Western research and documentation. Prior to the introduction of positivism into Western scholarship, innovations in printing technology, literary advancements, and the development of capitalism encouraged the passing of copyright statutes by nation-states in fifteenth century Europe. The evolution of copyright and positivism in Europe influenced United States copyright and its protection of the author, as well as the practice of archiving and its role in interpreting history. Because Native American cultures practiced orality, they suffered the loss of their traditional knowledge and cultural expressions not protected by copyright. By incorporating postmodern perspectives on archiving and poststructuralist views on the formation of knowledge, this thesis argues that Native American tribes now use Western forms of digital technology to create archives, record their histories, and reclaim control of their traditional cultural expressions.

In this paper we describe DSpace™, an open source system that acts as a repository for digital research and educational material produced by an organization or institution. DSpace was developed during two years’ collaboration between the Hewlett-Packard Company and MIT Libraries. The development team worked closely with MIT Libraries staff and early adopter faculty members to produce a ‘breadth-first’ system, providing all of the basic features required by a digital repository service. As well as functioning as a live service, DSpace is intended as a base for extending repository functionality, particularly to address long-term preservation concerns. We describe the functionality of the current DSpace system, and briefly describe its technical architecture. We conclude with some remarks about the future development and operation of the DSpace system.

Abstract:
This dissertation offers an overview on the role played by social networks, especially YouTube and Facebook, as digital archives. The focus of my research is on the empirical case study of the vernacular videos shot and circulated during the twenty-nine-day phase of the Tunisian revolution, in the post-January 14, 2011 period. I explore questions of the preservation and transmission of these visual testimonies over time in virtual and offline domains within a critical framework of the commercial and highly-capitalistic nature of social networks. In this respect, I point at the spectator as an agent of transformation in the proposed videos by using the tool of cinematic montage as a modus operandi to create new narratives out of the clips. The findings suggest that, whereas the circulation of footage online decreases in post- January 14, 2011, YouTube turns into a time-based archive that can be used retrospectively by users/spectators to retrieve vernacular videos and recombine them, thanks to infrastructural features, such as searchability and the hyperaccessibility of contents. The spectator emerges as the character who performs social media as archives by forcing the functioning of the algorithm. Spectators create other forms of repositories online and offline, which diffuse the clips, while they create hierarchies among digital objects of the same nature. The clips turn into established aesthetic models of trustworthiness. They constitute a legacy from which to liberate in order to create new representations for a country in transition. Alternatively, they enter fictional narratives that shed light on current controversial political and social issues in the country. The exploration of individual memory also produces a set of narratives. Aside from specific scenes, the interviewed subjects and participants of the focus group perceive an antagonism between digital and physically mediated experiences. Indeed, the whole set of emotional phenomena related to the process of recollection shows this controversial relationship with the clips of the revolution in the present time. These recollections also show the ambivalent weight that the so-called connective memory objects have in the creation of individual and collective memory. My material illustrates, through contradictions and limits, the relevance of social networks as repositories of the Tunisian revolution, post-January 14, 2011. This is despite the commercial nature of these internet products. My material also stresses the role of the spectator within the process of archiving as the character that, ultimately over time, makes preservation possible by means of memory and the creation of additional narratives and storytelling of the twenty-nine-day phase of the revolution.

Abstract:

The European Union has lead to higher collaboration between the European countries, more exchange of information and a tendency to centralize more political decisions. There is also a tendency to try to create legislations that are more similar in each nation.

This paper aims at giving an idea about the challenges that the nations might meet when working towards higher archival collaboration within the European Union. The report by the European Commission “Report on archives in the enlarged European Union - Increased archival collaboration in Europe: action plan” from 2005 states that there is a need for higher European collaboration within the field of archives. The goal is to create a gateway for the citizens to have easy access to archival information from the different member states.

There are some obstacles for this to easily work. To start with the member nations have different cultural traditions and legislations when it comes to freedom of information. It has also got to do with technical issues such as which computer systems, file types and structures et c that are allowed.

This paper takes its starting point in the field of digital deliveries to the national archives of Sweden and The United Kingdom. A comparison has been made to show the difference of how these countries proceed with their archival work to give an idea about how these differences can affect the wish for higher collaboration within the European Union.

Abstract:
Taking its cue from the increasing amount of digital content deposited into institutional and subject repositories as well as the open question of repositories' role in long-term preservation, this study presents case studies of three German institutional and subject repositories all of which are in a different stage of establishing a (cooperative) framework for the long-term preservation of their digital collections. Drawing on different sets of criteria for trustworthy repositories, it is investigated which strategies the selected repositories pursue to preserve the digital assets in their collections, and how these strategies are implemented with the help of both human repository staff and the repository software used. The following repositories are considered: pedocs (Deutsches Institut für Internationale Pädagogische Forschung), JUWEL (Forschungszentrum Jülich), and Qucosa (SLUB Dresden). In that the latter can be regarded as examples for common types of (German) repositories, the results of this study might on the one hand serve as a guideline for repositories that intend, similar to the ones described here, to explore questions of long-term preservation in the near future, or are even taking their first concrete steps in this field. On the other hand, it is hoped that this work can at least give some hints as to the stage and status of long-term preservation in the German repository landscape.

With the widespread of the concept and applications of Web 2.0, a lot of online platforms are created based on the spirit of Web 2.0. One kind of applications is social tagging. Social tagging allows users to provide labels or notes for Web content such as photographs, web links, artwork, and others. Through such behavior, classification of the tagged contents is achieved together by many people. Classification by social tagging is called “folksomony”. Digital archives let people appreciate artworks from the Internet without the constraints of time and space. Therefore, the purpose of applying social tagging to digital archives is to provide the visitors a tool to express their personal feelings and opinions about the artworks, so that comprehensive comments and descriptions of the artworks will be available to everyone. Hopefully in doing so, latent relationships unnoticed by the experts can be revealed. This research is to apply the spirit of Web 2.0 to Yuyu Yang Digital Art Museum. First of all, it uses CKIP Chinese Segmentation System to process the metadata of every artwork and extract the keywords according to their weights. The extracted keywords represent professional descriptions about the artwork. Second, public users can tag artworks freely with any vocabulary. Finally, the tagging system will combine the extracted keywords and the tags from the users to form hierarchical tag clusters and generate a tag map for every category of artwork. This tag map reflects the classification by the public users and achieves the goal of folksomony.

In this thesis, we present how we merge the six digital archives of National Taiwan University into one digital resource center. We use the OAI-PMH framework that announced by Open Archives Initiative in 2002 to cross heterogeneous systems. If we can overcome the interoperability problems we face in NTU with this framework, then it is possible to apply the same model in similar circumstances. Our goal is to build a union catalog via metadata. The system is based on the Java technology and an HTTP/XML based lightweight protocol — OAI-PMH. It has four main components: 1. OAI-PMH data provider. 2. Metadata harvester. 3. Metadata mapping function. 4. Web-based query/browse interface. The first half of this thesis is about the interoperability problems of digital archives, and the second half is about implementations of the system.

What is the definition of digital material reproduction ? It let we interesting! Digital archives institution in our country see as the study object in the research, and the eight institutions of digital archives of National Digital Archives Program is the study range, and understanding the problems and solutions of digital material reproduction of digital archives institution, to study Society of Collective Administ implement the feasibility and its function in our country, and understanding the viewpoint for it of the staff of digital archives institution in our country, and of the expert of library and copyright, to look for the answer of the research problem. The research interviews 6 staffs of digital archives institution and 5 experts of library and copyright, and finds out the problems of digital material reproduction of digital archives institution:the problems of technique aspect---the material reading is difficult, the new technique impact, the outsourcing manufacturer experience shortage, the original material condition is bed, the material of digital reproduction present difficult; the problems of policy aspect--- the quality of the material of digital reproduction is bed, the budget and manpower is limited;the policy of reproduction confused;the problems of copyright aspect---Not digital reproduce material because copyright, or after reproducing only list in the catalog, or only using in the institution, or user use material by themselves (reproduction, print out, or download) but encroached upon copyright, user can't outside use the material in the institution, and the license causes the problem of the material restriction. The problems of other aspect---the professional degree shortage, the doubt Society of Collective Administ. The problems can solved from three aspects of technique, policy, copyright. In addition, "compound" is another solution, it makes the collective management and license. This research finds many interviewees think to solve the problems digital material reproduction through Society of Collective Administ, and develop the function of its intermediary to help the digital archives institution, and the function of Society of Collective Administ have solved problems, helping license, intermediary, collective management, balance ownership and user.

Historical studies are not only one of the important humanities but also crucial to the cultural inheritance and the construction of collective knowledge of a country or region. Therefore history is always listed as the requirement in obligated education. As the knowledge of time, one of the features of historical studies is using abundant first-handed documents, original pieces, and to conduct the researches with a conscientious and careful attitude as well as evidence based. The research outcomes are accomplished with evidences in hands and the comprehension of the meanings of evidences. However, the vast historical materials from paperbacks, images, and original pieces are often scattered everywhere so that historians have to spend lots of time and efforts searching and collecting these historical materials which would take up a large substantial space and are inconvenient to take along therefore downgrades the quality of studies. Yet the appearance of digital archives has put speed retrieve and storage space compress in to practice. Digital archives scanned historical materials and established the database so researchers no longer required visiting each archives for reviewing the materials when attempting to use the ancient books, files, and manuscripts. Nonetheless, while enjoying the convenience of speed retrieve and browse of materials, the accuracy of digital archives should remain precedence. The studies may have flaws and come up with the false results which can further cause one’s academic career if there were error in the digital archives. Abstract:
The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) has been a force on Canadian airwaves for nearly a century. Within that timeframe, kilometres of textual records and thousands of hours of audiovisual recordings have been produced. Those records are evidence of the CBC’s role in mirroring and developing Canada’s national consciousness. Yet, the CBC’s records are scattered throughout Canada in multiple archival institutions. This thesis analyzes the development of these archives, with special attention to the only repository the CBC links to on its “Resources and Archives” webpage: The CBC Digital Archives. With consideration of the challenges and opportunities presented by digital culture, this thesis aims to uncover the role of the CBC Digital Archives within CBC’s archival landscape and its wider broadcasting policies and mandate.
