Abstract:
This article presents the ambitious potentialities in the use of digital methods and techniques for the documentation of the Nordic architectural heritage and environment. The processes of knowledge, both theoretical and practical, should not ignore the traces of the past, old buildings and traditional constructions. On the contrary, they should serve as a testimony of the past and provide a solid starting point for new, more coherent, sustainable and harmonic urban development. Since the Venice Charter in 1965 up to the more recent international documents such as the Declaration of Amsterdam in 1975 and the Madrid Document in 2011, both the verification of authenticity and understanding of architectural entities and details are getting more insight because of the current technological advancements. However, the methods for the analysis and following these noble principles and declaration articles is still not defined well enough. Each method and practical procedure with specific instruments produce also specific outputs and results, which need to be put in mutual dialogue in order to obtain useful results. These themes are studied and developed in this article by presenting chosen case studies in research projects both on the urban and singular scale with the location in Oulu, Finland.

Abstract:
Research in the field of digital technologies in the context of an open relationship with the enveloping society has attracted significant attention. An exploratory study into creating and developing a paramet-ric online model of urban planning documentation is presented. It includes a general urban plan, rules for land use and development, area planning with the possibility to assess the impact of new site de-velopment on life in the city and the structure of the urban environment. The research technique in-cluded an analysis of the existing methods for introducing new technologies to urban planning and ur-ban studies, which allowed extensive analytical data on the use of the territory and the major technical and economic performance of site development to be obtained. An assessment of existing materials in the city information modelling and the possibility of introducing innovations in urban planning is ad-dressed. We determined the major problems of existing programmes and documents regulating rela-tions between developers and people participating in the city life and creating the urban environment. The research findings include the theory of establishing a platform to regulate the development and related algorithms that utilise parameters embedded in the online model to forecast alternative organi-sation of a city in terms of urban planning documentation. The relevance of the parametric online mod-el for urban planning documentation lies in its versatility. The transparency of all processes related to establishing an urban environment will provide a new background for designers, management struc-tures and the city as a whole.

Abstract:
Abstract Objective.—To demonstrate the feasibility of the use of digital images to document routine cases and to perform diagnostic quality assessment. Methods.—Pathologists documented cases by acquiring up to 12 digital images per case. The images were sampled at 25:1, 50:1, 100:1, 200:1, or 400:1 magnifications, according to adequacy in aiding diagnosis. After each acquisition, the referral pathologist marked a region of interest within each acquired image in order to evaluate intrinsic redundancy. The extrinsic redundancy was determined by counting the unnecessary images. Cases were randomly selected and reviewed by one pathologist. The quality of each image, the possibility of accomplishing a diagnosis based on images, and the degree of agreement was evaluated. Results.—During routine practice, 1469 cases were documented using 3902 images. Most of the images were acquired at higher power magnifications. From all acquired cases, 143 cases and their 373 related images were randomly selected for review. In 88.1% (126/143) of reviewed cases, it was possible to accomplish the diagnosis based on images. In 30.2% (38/126) of these cases, the reviewer considered that the diagnosis could be accomplished with fewer images. The referral pathologist and the reviewer found intrinsic redundancy in 57.8% and 54.5% of images, respectively. Conclusions.—Our results showed that digital image documentation to perform diagnostic quality assessment is a feasible solution. However, owing to the impact on routine practice, guidelines for acquisition and documentation of cases may be needed.

Bowers, Jack. "Language Documentation and Standards in Digital Humanities : TEI and the documentation of Mixtepec-Mixtec." Thesis, Université Paris sciences et lettres, 2020. http://www.theses.fr/2020UPSLP040.

Full text
Abstract:
This project concerns a language documentation project covering the Mixtepec-Mixtec variety of Mixtec (ISO 639-3: mix). Mixtepec-Mixtec is an Oto-Manguean spoken by roughly 9000- 10000 people in San Juan Mixtepec Municipality in the Juxtlahuaca district of Oaxaca, Mexico and by several thousand speakers living in Baja California, Tlaxiaco, Santiago Juxtlahuaca. There are also significant populations in the United States, most notably in California, around Santa Maria and Oxnard, as well as in Oregon, Florida, and Arkansas. The core facets of the work are: the creation a body of linguistic resources for the MIX language and community; the evaluation the current tools, standards and practices used in language documentation; an account of how the TEI and related XML technologies can be used as the primary encoding, metadata, and annotation format for multi-dimensional linguistic projects, including under-resourced languages. The concrete resources produced are: a multilingual TEI dictionary; a collection of audio recordings published and archived on Harvard Dataverse; a corpus of texts derived from a combination of spoken language transcriptions and texts encoded and annotated in TEI, as well as linguistic and lexicographic descriptions and analyses of the Mixtepec-Mixtec language. Due to the array of different data and resources produced, this project has components that equally fall within the fields of: digital humanities, language documentation, language description and corpus linguistics. Because of this overlapping relevance, over the processes of attempting to carry out this work in line with best practices in each sub-field, this work addresses the need to further bring together the intersecting interests, technologies, practices and standards relevant to, and used in each of these related fields

Enqvist, Delia Ni Chiobhain. "Digital Maritime Sights : Digital visual documentation and communication in Scandinavian contract maritime archaeology." Licentiate thesis, Linnéuniversitetet, Institutionen för kulturvetenskaper (KV), 2018. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:lnu:diva-77244.

Abstract:
This licentiate thesis investigates the use of digital visualisations for knowledge production and communication of maritime heritage located underwater. The archaeological practice that takes place in response to development, contract archaeology, is the field that is being investigated. Much of the practical and administrative aspects of contract maritime work involves the survey, excavation and interpretation of archaeological remains. In addition, shifts in heritage policy emphasise that the results of this work move beyond their own value to provide access and democratic participation to heritage and be of benefit to society (e.g. Faro Convention, 2005). Since the inaccessibility of maritime archaeology underwater makes outreach especially challenging, digital, and in particular 3D, technologies have been recognised as having great potential to meet the needs of both maritime archaeological researchers and public audiences. Advances in methodologies for digitally documenting and visualising archaeological sites, both on land and underwater, are providing a range of innovative and multidisciplinary solutions for both archaeological analysis and outreach activities. The aim of this research is to understand current uses of digital visualisation for knowledge production and communication of maritime archaeology located underwater, in order to identify knowledge gaps that would benefit from future research. This aim is met through a study drawn primarily from the fields of digital archaeology, maritime archaeology and heritage studies, as well as discourse and thematic analysis of the factors that influence the use of these technologies in the sector. The case study is the contract maritime archaeology sector in Scandinavia, with a primary focus on the practice in Sweden and also including perspectives from the Danish and Norwegian sectors. The results show that an emphasis on efficiency within the contract sector shapes the understanding and use of digital technologies, in some instances limiting their potential for archaeological interpretation and communication. While the maritime sector was found to be partly defined and restricted by a distinct identity, at times operating independently from mainstream archaeology, it was also found to be open to innovation. This represents great potential for digital workflows aimed at enhancing both interpretation and communication to be applied to the maritime archaeological sector in the future.

Abstract:
Comics is a writing style that is often written off as just something done for entertainment or design. However, there are many facets of comics that make it a suitable candidate for technical documentation. By nature, comics is a visual and universal language and, as such, is the basis for an investigation of comics within the scope of technical communication. This research investigates whether comics can be automatically generated, based on a set of predefined panel templates, for such purposes while also providing for flexibility in both content and ultimate consumption format. A within-subjects study run with over 200 participants compared comics to two of its traditional documentation style contenders, prose and step-oriented, in terms of understanding and evaluation metrics, including those related to user experience. Results indicate that comics as a documentation style can offer enhanced, more positive user experiences, albeit not being overall better than the other styles.

Schlosberg, Justin. "Power in the dock : media and accountability in the digital age." Thesis, Goldsmiths College (University of London), 2012. http://research.gold.ac.uk/8029/.

Abstract:
Contemporary democratic discourse places emphasis on accountability as the basis of power legitimacy and the scholarly literature across disciplines has reserved a special space for the media in that process, for better or for worse. But exactly who is held to account, when, how and by whom, remain troubling questions in the study of media, politics and power. Amidst displays of adversarial journalism without fear or favour, how far are powerful interests still able to control the agenda and manipulate outcomes? The research undertaken here set out to interrogate the notion of media spectacle in a different way from which it has been commonly applied in critical media theory. In particular, its intimate association with sensationalism and tabloidisation threatens to obscure the role of spectacle in what are considered the mainstays of ‘serious’ or responsible news. The Sun might still be the most popular newspaper in Britain, and online news the fastest growing platform, but it is the serious news outlets of traditional media – public service broadcasting, broadsheets, weeklies etc – which remain by far the most credible sources of news and information. And it is credibility which holds the key to ideological power. The research involved extensive analysis of archived television news programmes, supplemented by 50 interviews with a cross section of news producers and actors including journalists, news executives, politicians, campaigners, press officers, lawyers and civil servants. The core subject is terrestrial television news in the UK – a public service regulated platform with a longstanding reputation for high quality journalism. My overall concern is not so much with scandal involving official misconduct or misdemeanour, but rather controversies that point to systemic institutional corruption of the kind that transcends individuals and party politics. These controversies are no longer rare exceptions in the contemporary newscape and their existence raises profound questions about the scope of accountability through the media. There has, however, been surprisingly little critical assessment of such coverage. This provided the overarching motivation for the research; a core premise being that only by examining those instances where mechanisms of accountability appear most far reaching, can we gain a new understanding of ideological power in the age of transparency.

Abstract:
The main purpose of this study is to describe and increase the understanding of preschool teachers´ experiences regarding pedagogical documentation with digital tablets. The focus of the study was to reveal how the digital tablets are used for pedagogical documentation. Our hope is to give new meaning concerning ICT, information and communication technology, on a daily basis at preschools. The method that we used in this study is qualitative interviews to reach and get knowledge about preschool teachers´ experiences with digital tablets. In the results we have been able to conclude that the positive properties, such as digital tablets being a fast and simple way of creating pedagogical documentation, that the technique offered were bigger than the negative aspects, which resulted in a general positive outcome.

Jones, Toby. "Three-dimensional digital recording and modelling methodologies for documentation and reconstruction of the Newport Medieval Ship." Thesis, University of Wales Trinity Saint David, 2015. http://repository.uwtsd.ac.uk/655/.

Full text
Abstract:
The following thesis presents the three-dimensional digital documentation methods and modelling approaches used during the excavation and post-excavation research phases of the Newport Medieval Ship Project. The primary case study is the Newport Medieval Ship, a large clinker-built merchant vessel discovered in 2002 in Newport, Wales, United Kingdom. The use of accurate and efficient three-dimensional digital recording methodologies has allowed for the development of innovative approaches to organising, analysing, modelling and disseminating data about the individual timbers and the overall original hull form. The utilisation of advanced digital technology and engineering, in the form of Rhinoceros3D modelling software, contact digitising and rapid prototyping has enabled the project to develop and test a variety of new methodologies for documenting and reconstructing ancient vessels. Results of the individual ship timber documentation and modelling methodologies are presented, along with analysis and comparison to more traditional documentation and reconstruction approaches. Additionally, the thesis examines the changing philosophical or conceptual approaches to hull form recording and reconstruction research over the last 200 years, and focuses in detail on the last 20 years of the rapidly evolving field of digital documentation in nautical archaeology.

Abstract:
With today's increased digitalization, organizations face the challenge of finding new and more effective ways for employees to collaborate, communicate and save documentation through digital tools. The purpose of this study was to investigate implementation of a digital communication tool in a large private international organisation. The study has combined the perspectives of implementation project leaders and users of the tool, in order to get a full understanding of the implementation process. The following research questions were addressed: How can we understand the process of implementing digital tools from a project leader perspective? How does the user perspective add to the understanding of the process of implementing new digital tools? The study involved eight semi-structured interviews withproject leaders and users. A thematic analysis of the data was conducted. Results show that there is a discrepancy between the project leaders’ understanding of implementing digital tools and the users’ understanding. Project leaders and users had differing views on the precise nature of the problems that needed to be solved by the new digital tool. Linked to this, project leaders had a longer-term organisational perspective on the problems to be solved, whilst users had a shorter-term focus on their own work within the organisation and the immediate technical needs thrown up by this. These different perspectives were reflected in the two groups’ different views on the success, or otherwise, of the implementation process.

Abstract:
Support from colleagues and managers are two important factors to a good work environment. Another important support is documentation. Finding answers and information that is documented in cases of uncertainty can lead to reduced concern and a sense of security. Documentation can be carried out in different ways depending on the need and prerequisites. During this project the need of documentation at a cleaning unit have been investigated and analyzed. This report is the result of a master thesis project that took place during spring of 2019 at the Master of Science program in Industrial Design Engineering at Luleå University of Technology. The municipal cleaning unit carries out cleaning and floor cleaning in most premises where municipal activities are conducted in the municipality of Piteå. The cleaning unit currently has 85 permanent and 8 temporary cleaners in the organization who perform cleaning in four different geographical areas in the municipality. To get the required working hours several of the cleaners are schedule in more than one workplace. At the moment it is the cleaners task to assemble schedules when different types of cleaning are to be performed on their workplace. The documentation usually takes place in paper form and the design of the schedule varies from appearance to content between workplaces. Since these schedules are in paper form it is also difficult for workplaces to take inspiration from each other regarding the content and structure of the schedule. The fact that the variation on these schedules is so great even though they contain the same type of information leads to an uncertainty among the cleaners. During the project, the cleaners had to answer a survey that contained a wide range of questions to get an understanding on their thoughts regarding support, motivation, workloads among others. These questions were used to map how the cleaners experienced different topics within the organization. Observations have also been made on the cleaners where they have carried out major cleaning and allergy cleaning. The cleaning unit also had workplace meetings and an education for new cleaners during the project, which made it possible to also observe these occasions. A workshop where the cleaners had to reflect and answer various discussion issues related to documentation and information was carried out at the end of the project to collect the cleaners thoughts to use for idea and concept generation. The project has resulted in a solution proposal for a digitized documentation tool that the cleaning unit can carry on to development work. The solution proposal moves the now closed and locked documentation in paper format to a more open and easily accessible digitized documentation tool. The tool gives the cleaners the opportunity to, among others, learn from each other independently of workplace, get a support in case of uncertainty and get a common structure and routine within the whole cleaning unit that could improve the uncertainty that currently exists regarding documentation. Implementing a documentation tool for the cleaners would contribute with structure, uniformity, improve work environment and an opportunity to maintain knowledge within the organization. The knowledge and information that now is locked to people and workplaces could be preserved and help the cleaning unit grow and maintain status and competitiveness if documented. A digitized documentation tool could be the solution to that need.

Abstract:
Libraries in Indonesia are starting to compete in developing digital libraries. College, public, and regional libraries have started to develop digital libraries. The development of digital libraries is based on the consideration of providing opportunities for greater access to collections owned by libraries and adjusting the format of library services with the characteristics of users who are familiar with information technology products. Seeing the importance of digital libraries, BPAD DIY began to develop a digital library under the name I-Jogja. I-Jogja is a digital library portal developed in the Android and iOs operating systems. I-Jogja was developed using the iLibrary software created by PT. Woolu Maya script. I–Jogja offers a new concept in digital library management, where to access public collections, people do not need to download but borrow collections from the digital library portal. This digital collection lending concept is known as e-lending. Through research, the researcher aims to describe the management of I-Jogja as a new concept of digital library management. Research that researchers conducted using qualitative research methods. From this research, it is found that the text-based I-Jogja collection, to access I-Jogja must be registered in the application, functions as a means of fostering reading interest, policies related to membership and access patterns, is able to be a means of fostering reading interest, able to run on the operating system Android and iOS.

Abstract:
ndramayu Regency has many ancient manuscripts that contain valuable information. Paper-based manuscripts are very easily damaged. Therefore, it is necessary to preserve ancient manuscripts. Switching to a digital flipbook is considered appropriate because it provides an interface that is similar to the original script. This study aims to describe the importance of preserving the cultural heritage of ancient manuscripts owned by the Bandar Cimanuk Indramayu Museum. Digitization can be an effort to preserve ancient manuscripts. The research used descriptive qualitative method. Data collection through observation, interviews, and documentation study. It is hoped that the research results in the form of flipbook development can be used as an effort to preserve ancient manuscripts that represent, protect, and exceed the physicality of ancient manuscripts. The conclusion of this study is that the ancient Legok Kolot manuscript is the identity and wealth of the Indramayu people, so it needs to be digitized so that the preservation of the script is maintained. The media transfer process at the Bandar Cimanuk Museum goes through three main stages, namely the pre-digitization process, the digitization process, and the post-digitization process. In its process, there are three important things that must be considered, such as source characteristics, product usability, and technological characteristics. The use of digital flipbooks as an effort to preserve ancient manuscripts is considered to protect, represent, and exceed the original ancient manuscripts

Abstract:
Modern technological advances have enabled digital automated methods to be applied for accurate and detailed documentation. Such techniques include image based modelling and terrestrial laser scanning. They can easily be adapted to perfectly suit the documentation needs for small and large objects. In this paper the digital geometric documentation of two medieval fortifications using such contemporary methods is briefly described. These are the western part of the Castle of Chios and an important part of the medieval Rhodes fortifications. The purpose of the geometric documentation for both cases was the restoration of these parts, hence detailed documentation was necessary. Conventional two-dimensional plans with digital orthophotographs were produced and from them conventional line drawings were required for the case of Chios castle. Both castle parts included cylindrical bastions, whose projection on two dimensional plans is obviously deformed. Such non-planar parts constitute a special challenge for the geometric documentation. To solve this problem the three-dimensional digital documentations of these parts were developed by using suitable development routines. Thorough presentation of all considerations for these developments are presented and the implementations are briefly described. The results of these developments are evaluated for their usefulness, accuracy, and efficiency as digital documentation products.

Reyes, Angela, Benjamin Roseth, and Diego A. Vera-Cossio. Technology, Identification, and Access to Social Programs: Experimental Evidence from Panama. Inter-American Development Bank, August 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.18235/0003485.

Full text
Abstract:
Access to identification cards (IDs) is often required to claim government benefits. However, it is unclear which policies to increase ID ownership are more effective. We experimentally analyze the effect of two policy interventions to induce the timely renewal of identification cards on access to a government social program in Panama. Sending reminders about expiration dates increased the probability of on-time renewals and of accessing benefits from a social program by 12 and 4.3 percentage points, respectively, relative to a control group. In contrast, allowing individuals to renew their ID online only increased renewals and access to benefits by 8 and 2.9 percentage points, respectively. This result was driven by lower-income individuals. The results suggest that policies to increase ownership of valid identity documentation can reduce inclusion errors in government programs and that simply granting access to digital tools may not be enough to unlock important effects.

Abstract:
The multiple schema for the classification of soils rely on differing criteria but the major soil science systems, including the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the international harmonized World Reference Base for Soil Resources soil classification systems, are primarily based on inferred pedogenesis. Largely these classifications are compiled from individual observations of soil characteristics within soil profiles, and the vast majority of this pedologic information is contained in nonquantitative text descriptions. We present initial text mining analyses of parsed text in the digitally available USDA soil taxonomy documentation and the Soil Survey Geographic database. Previous research has shown that latent information structure can be extracted from scientific literature using Natural Language Processing techniques, and we show that this latent information can be used to expedite query performance by using syntactic elements and part-of-speech tags as indices. Technical vocabulary often poses a text mining challenge due to the rarity of its diction in the broader context. We introduce an extension to the common English vocabulary that allows for nearly-complete indexing of USDA Soil Series Descriptions.

Abstract:
The performance of supply chains used to be mainly the concern of academics and professionals who studied the potential efficiencies and risks associated with this aspect of globalisation. In 2021, major disruptions in this critical sector of our economies are making headlines and attracting the attention of policy makers around the world. Supply chain bottlenecks create shortages, fuel inflation, and undermine economic recovery. This report provides a transversal and multidisciplinary analysis of the challenges and opportunities regarding data interoperability and data sharing as they relate to the ‘Great Lakes - St. Lawrence Seaway Trade Corridor’ (GLSLTC)’s intermodal transportation and trade data strategy. The size and scope of this trade corridor are only matched by the complexity of its multimodal freight transportation systems and growing urbanization on both sides of the Canada-US border. This complexity is exacerbated by the lack of data interoperability and effective collaborations between the different stakeholders within the various jurisdictions and amongst them. Our analytical work relies on : 1) A review of the relevant documentation on the latest challenges to supply chains (SC), intermodal freight transport and international trade, identifying any databases that are to be used.; 2) A comparative review of selected relevant initiatives to give insights into the best practices in digital supply chains implemented in Canada, the United States, and the European Union.; 3) Interviews and discussions with experts from Transport Canada, Statistics Canada, the Canadian Centre on Transportation Data (CCTD) and Global Affairs Canada, as well as with CIRANO’s research community and four partner institutions to identify databases and data that they use in their research related to transportation and trade relevant data availabilities and methodologies as well as joint research opportunities. Its main findings can be summarized as follow: GLSLTC is characterized by its critical scale, complexity, and strategic impact as North America’s most vital trade corridor in the foreseeable further intensification of continental trade. 4% of Canadian GDP is attributed to the Transportation and Logistics sector (2018): $1 trillion of goods moved every year: Goods and services imports are equivalent to 33% of Canada’s GDP and goods and services exports equivalent to 32%. The transportation sector is a key contributor to the achievement of net-zero emissions commitment by 2050. All sectors of the Canadian economy are affected by global supply chain disruptions. Uncertainty and threats extend well beyond the COVID-19 Pandemic. “De-globalization” and increasing supply chains regionalization pressures are mounting. Innovation and thus economic performance—increasingly hinges on the quantity and quality of data. Data is transforming Canada’s economy/society and is now at the center of global trade “Transport data is becoming less available: Canada needs to make data a priority for a national transportation strategy.” * “How the Government of Canada collects, manages, and governs data—and how it accesses and shares data with other governments, sectors, and Canadians—must change.”
