Bowers, Jack. "Language Documentation and Standards in Digital Humanities : TEI and the documentation of Mixtepec-Mixtec." Thesis, Université Paris sciences et lettres, 2020. http://www.theses.fr/2020UPSLP040.
Full textThis project concerns a language documentation project covering the Mixtepec-Mixtec variety of Mixtec (ISO 639-3: mix). Mixtepec-Mixtec is an Oto-Manguean spoken by roughly 9000- 10000 people in San Juan Mixtepec Municipality in the Juxtlahuaca district of Oaxaca, Mexico and by several thousand speakers living in Baja California, Tlaxiaco, Santiago Juxtlahuaca. There are also significant populations in the United States, most notably in California, around Santa Maria and Oxnard, as well as in Oregon, Florida, and Arkansas. The core facets of the work are: the creation a body of linguistic resources for the MIX language and community; the evaluation the current tools, standards and practices used in language documentation; an account of how the TEI and related XML technologies can be used as the primary encoding, metadata, and annotation format for multi-dimensional linguistic projects, including under-resourced languages. The concrete resources produced are: a multilingual TEI dictionary; a collection of audio recordings published and archived on Harvard Dataverse; a corpus of texts derived from a combination of spoken language transcriptions and texts encoded and annotated in TEI, as well as linguistic and lexicographic descriptions and analyses of the Mixtepec-Mixtec language. Due to the array of different data and resources produced, this project has components that equally fall within the fields of: digital humanities, language documentation, language description and corpus linguistics. Because of this overlapping relevance, over the processes of attempting to carry out this work in line with best practices in each sub-field, this work addresses the need to further bring together the intersecting interests, technologies, practices and standards relevant to, and used in each of these related fields

Full textSupport from colleagues and managers are two important factors to a good work environment. Another important support is documentation. Finding answers and information that is documented in cases of uncertainty can lead to reduced concern and a sense of security. Documentation can be carried out in different ways depending on the need and prerequisites. During this project the need of documentation at a cleaning unit have been investigated and analyzed. This report is the result of a master thesis project that took place during spring of 2019 at the Master of Science program in Industrial Design Engineering at Luleå University of Technology. The municipal cleaning unit carries out cleaning and floor cleaning in most premises where municipal activities are conducted in the municipality of Piteå. The cleaning unit currently has 85 permanent and 8 temporary cleaners in the organization who perform cleaning in four different geographical areas in the municipality. To get the required working hours several of the cleaners are schedule in more than one workplace. At the moment it is the cleaners task to assemble schedules when different types of cleaning are to be performed on their workplace. The documentation usually takes place in paper form and the design of the schedule varies from appearance to content between workplaces. Since these schedules are in paper form it is also difficult for workplaces to take inspiration from each other regarding the content and structure of the schedule. The fact that the variation on these schedules is so great even though they contain the same type of information leads to an uncertainty among the cleaners. During the project, the cleaners had to answer a survey that contained a wide range of questions to get an understanding on their thoughts regarding support, motivation, workloads among others. These questions were used to map how the cleaners experienced different topics within the organization. Observations have also been made on the cleaners where they have carried out major cleaning and allergy cleaning. The cleaning unit also had workplace meetings and an education for new cleaners during the project, which made it possible to also observe these occasions. A workshop where the cleaners had to reflect and answer various discussion issues related to documentation and information was carried out at the end of the project to collect the cleaners thoughts to use for idea and concept generation. The project has resulted in a solution proposal for a digitized documentation tool that the cleaning unit can carry on to development work. The solution proposal moves the now closed and locked documentation in paper format to a more open and easily accessible digitized documentation tool. The tool gives the cleaners the opportunity to, among others, learn from each other independently of workplace, get a support in case of uncertainty and get a common structure and routine within the whole cleaning unit that could improve the uncertainty that currently exists regarding documentation. Implementing a documentation tool for the cleaners would contribute with structure, uniformity, improve work environment and an opportunity to maintain knowledge within the organization. The knowledge and information that now is locked to people and workplaces could be preserved and help the cleaning unit grow and maintain status and competitiveness if documented. A digitized documentation tool could be the solution to that need.

Full textArt research is characterized by a polarized articulation between art practice and theory. This thesis proposes to transfer this symptomatic paradigm from this discipline to the pragmatic question of the modalities of its scientific communication. The form of the latter is debated by the actors of the French higher art schools, who defend freedom in the face of the predominant model of academic writing. The hypothesis of this thesis is that documentation becomes a plausible form of scientific communication adapted to art research. To deal with this object of study, digital arts research, which is most often interdisciplinary, cooperative and collective, has proved particularly relevant, since the plurality and fragmentation of its results make it possible to break out of the practical versus theoretical dichotomy. Indeed, the latter involving several participants are divided between artistic creations, technological developments and theoretical contributions. The observation of a shift from documentation to scientific communication is conditioned by the existence of documentary enunciation; since knowledge, regardless of the discursive practice used, is embodied in a discourse understood as the result of an enunciative act. Three exploratory case studies were conducted around three documentary devices established by actors in digital arts research in France and Quebec - the Cahier de Résidence de Kawenga, territories numériques, the Répertoire des œuvres hypermediatiques and other sections of the NT2 laboratory website, and the Archive Arc_Danse developed at the Hexagram-UQAM laboratory. The methodology used raises the documentary statement thought to be an extension of the editorial statement as an operational concept. It is divided into two stages. The first one studies the documentation as an information-communication device using, depending on the field, different tools and modes of involvement of the researcher. The second examines documentary objects using a semiotic approach in order to directly identify the index marks of the documentary utterance and to jointly identify the reported and concealed utterers. This results in the characterization of specific enunciative regimes. This thesis supports the idea that documentation conveys a documentary discourse to the point that it can be used as a means of communication and no longer as a tool for the neutral transfer of information content from documents to users. It also details several attributes that attest concretely to its ability to respond to the info-communication issues specific to digital arts research and more generally to art research

Full textThis study examines digital motivation and user profiling to construct a set of guidelines that motivates users to engage in physical exercise, in a way that also encourage them to share workout documentation, training results and give recommendations in a digital network. It also examines people's thoughts at sharing the personal training results to others. This investigation is done in relation to an assignment where the client is involved in the development of an upcoming service which offers online documentation of physical workouts, mainly towards CrossFit. The qualitative study involved a test group of eight people with varied training knowledge and background. The study resulted in two different categories: a) motivation for documentation services in a digital network, and b) user profiling in a digital network within a training context. The conclusion shows that the significant part of this service is the individuals exercise result, visualized by a development curve in a way that makes it possible to compare your progress to others. Members of the network are both transmitter and receiver, meaning that in order to gain access to other people's results, one must be prepared to show its own results. All participants were willing to share their results to some extent. For the network to operate in the long run, user profiles must be truthful and reliable. Being able to make comments may be helpful to determine the exercise efficiency and suitability for oneself, but also for viewers seeking inspiration and suggestions on exercises. A normalized presentation of results is suggested, making the results less personal and comparable with other practitioners.

Full textFrom the basis of documentation and oral history resources this research proposes a documentary method for performing arts street. Five artists working in the city of São Paulo were selected to document their memories about street art theme, and had their artistic performance recorded in audiovisual format. The method consists of three qualitative steps capture and documentary treatment using digital technology, namely the recorded pre-audio interview, the record of action in place of artists in the street and finally an interview scripted by the previous steps recorded in video in a studio. The theoretical framework is based on Ecléa Bosi memory studies and the concept of Cultural Hybridization Néstor García Canclini. We conclude the importance of memory of artists to the history of cities, but also found the conceptual challenges and faced practical when considering the documentation of street performers in contemporary times.

Full textThe purpose with my research is to investigate special educators’ tasks in three different student wellness teams and how special educators experience their work with digital journal systems. The study has a qualitative approach where semi-structured interviews were used as the method with four special educators and a principal. A hermeneutic approach is applied as the interpretative analysis of the interview data. The result of this study shows that administrative tasks and preparation of cases before student wellness teams meetings and educational documentation are common tasks for special educators for those partaking in this study. The special educator’s perspective to find alternative ways and solutions to learning is common as well as adaptive teaching, especially on an individual level but also in groups. Cooperation between special educator and principal is sought after by special educators in this study but the actual cooperation varies heavily. The digital journal system has created previously unavailable opportunities and the term availability has become a broader meaning by way of archives, templates, and support materials. The downside with the digital journal system is that availability only applies to members of the team and not to others working closely with students.

Full textThe subject matter of this research addresses information treatment in digital ambience. It involves data processing, collection organization and art works conservation, considering the existing technological media. Its Theoretical base grounds in Documentation, theories of Information Science, as well as knowledge organization and technology. On the other hand, this approach is related to both Digital Art and Culture, considering all art works singularities that due to the fact of being made in a collective way are often ephemeral. The paradoxical features found in digital art treatment are considered the harder issue, once one has to record it in order to its reuse and/or updating possibilities. The methodology used is qualitative and exploratory, working on information treatment theories and organization institutionally accepted examples. Debate about information condition and technology statute is considered the starting point in our analysis to qualify digital art in informational ambience. Document and documentation in art and technology sphere is explored. Nontraditional documentary practices possibilities are being considered in digital art information systems and collection treatment. Digital art sites made by consortiums and other organization cases analysis allows to describe several informational resources utilized, including interoperability and preservation troubleshooting adopted. We conclude that Digital art information ambience is structured in complex manners. Various audiovisual media and computational technologies are used to work with miscellaneous content and different types of documents.

Full textThis study presents a system for the analysis and evaluation of digital press archives, analyses the digital press archives of a sample of Spanish newspapers and presents a proposal to classify and analyze the main sources that provide access to online press. The system is a kind of heuristic evaluation procedure based on 27 indicators articulated in four main sections: general features, contents, the query system, and presentation of results. For each indicator is explained: definition, explanation and use of punctuation. With this method, it analyses the digital press archives of the Spanish newspapers with the largest digital circulations between 2007 and 2010. The study points out the best and worst aspects of the digital press archives, establishing a ranking of newspapers in which El Mundo, Abc, El País and La Vanguardia occupy the top positions, and finally shows five major trends: extension of the temporary fund online, free archives versus payment archives, simplification (and depletion) of the query, filters in the presentation of results and documentary products in the archive section.

Full textThis research is based on ethnographic fieldwork in the Aboriginal township of Galiwin'ku, in Arnhem Land (Australia). It examines some empirical strategies conceived by Yolngu leaders with new information and communication technologies in order to produce meaningful representations of modernity for the young generations. These representations were instigated by their experiment with a digital knowledge documentation project and the possibilities for local and intercultural knowledge transmission this experiment gave rise to. The thesis illustrates how Yolngu assert their place in modernity through the restoration of their agency in history. It shows how, through ritual performances interpretations of the past find actualised expressions which articulate the ancestral past in a dynamic relationship with the challenges of modernity that Yolngu face in their daily lives

Full textNowadays, the heritage architectural studies benefit of the contributions of diverse digital methods and open new perspectives for the conservation, the analyses and the knowledge sharing especially on complex sites. Those new tools and techniques have become common and very useful presently, but how much they become common or indispensable for architectural and archeological studies? How do they fit into the different phases of the research work?We will discuss these principal questions by working mainly on two experimented sites, the site of Saint-Simeon the stylite in Syria and the abbey of Saint-Michel de Cuxa in France. The methodology used for the analysis and the elevation restoration is based on the digital tools and acquisition techniques and of three-dimensional information management and also on their setting relation with archaeological issues to build a dialogue between these two domains. Based on this reflection, we have developed a work protocol in scale of monographic study of a specific building in Saint Simeon site “the Residence”. This research is based on a combination of digital tools applied on this building for its analysis and by using them as a privileged instrument to support archaeological reflection, not an end in itself. The main contribution of this thesis focuses on the methodology and the ethics of the use of 3D digital service in archaeological approach, from the filed acquisition till the restitution representations. This approach highlights several axes, dynamism and interactivity of the work, the multidisciplinary and the collectivity context, the objective of documentation and diffusion

In 2009, the FAUTL was part of a conservation project led by Professor José Aguiar that focused on the facades of the buildings on Terreiro do Paço in Lisbon designed by architect Alexandre Alves Costa. As a result from this project there are several facades surveys by rectified photographs, coordinated by architect Luis Mateus that originated elevations. The material areas and anomaly incidence were obtained over these elevations, mostly using projection measurement, and were than written in tables. The aim of this work was to define and propose a methodology of three-dimensional modeling that permitted a more reliable area extraction. To show the methodology two facades of the east wing of Terreiro do Paço were used. The methodology used consisted on the definition of criteria to differentiate objects and on the development of a solid model of negligible thickness that represents the visible surfaces of the objects. This model is developed using the BIM (Building Information Model) application of ArchiCad that associates a model to a database allowing the extraction of listings characterizing constructive aspects such as dimensions, areas and materials. The areas obtained using this methodology were compared with the reference data and surface coefficients were determined for every construction element type. It was noted that the more the elements were intricate, the higher were the surface coefficients. This type of coefficients gives the idea of the percentage of area that is not considered in the projection measurement, varying with the different construction types considered. These percentages are fundamental for correcting measurements done over databases as the ones obtained over rectified images.

This research proposes a digital educational game focused on the learning of Japanese kanji. Its fundamentals are culturally based in the Japanese immigration to Brazil and, combined with the concepts and theories of transculturalism and topophilia, lead to a reflection of cultural appreciation and its hybridization. Such approaches fall within the overall context of combinations and adaptations, covering digital productions structured in accordance to concepts and theories from several areas of knowledge. The methodology is to conceive a game based on the difficulties of learning the Japanese language identified in students of non‐Japanese origin and provided by studies from other authors. It is also based on educational, psychological, philosophical and entertainment methodological assumptions organizing themselves in a position to produce an educational game, entertaining above all, that suits the needs of this generation used to challenges and reward systems. Based on such studies, some of the games found on the Internet and in the market were analyzed. It is discussed the transposition among medias, with an approach of the new media, focusing on the indication of the gaming platforms, according to the content. The process of designing and producing the game is optimized by the association of ideas and creation of an structured and elaborate game design documentation. The project creation is guided by the work process flow of a game, in which are demonstrated the steps and interactions between the teams involved in that production. The procedural and technical problems of the participants are reported by the teaching experience in the classroom, better placing and clarifying the title of this research
[EN] Cultural heritage documentation and preservation is an arduous and delicate task in which color plays a fundamental role. The correct determination of color provides vital information on a descriptive, technical and quantitative level. Classical color documentation methods in archaeology were usually restricted to strictly subjective procedures. However, this methodology has practical and technical limitations, affecting the results obtained in the determination of color. Nowadays, it is frequent to support classical methods with geomatics techniques, such as photogrammetry or laser scanning, together with digital image processing. Although digital images allow color to be captured quickly, easily, and in a non-invasive way, the RGB data provided by the camera does not itself have a rigorous colorimetric sense. Therefore, a rigorous transformation process to obtain reliable color data from digital images is required. This thesis proposes a novel technical solution, in which the integration of spectrophotometric and colorimetric analysis is intended as a complement to photogrammetric techniques that allow an improvement in color identification and representation of pigments with maximum reliability in 3D surveys, models and reconstructions. The proposed methodology is based on the colorimetric characterization of digital sensors, which is of novel application in cave paintings. The characterization aims to obtain the transformation equations between the device-dependent color data recorded by the camera and the independent, physically-based color spaces, such as those established by the Commission Internationale de l'Éclairage (CIE). The rigorous processing of color and spectral data requires software packages with specific colorimetric functionalities. Although there are different commercial software options, they do not integrate the digital image processing and colorimetric computations together. And more importantly, they do not allow the camera characterization to be carried out. Therefore, as a key aspect in this thesis is our in-house pyColourimetry software that was developed and tested taking into account the recommendations published by the CIE. pyColourimetry is an open-source code, independent without commercial ties; it allows the treatment of colorimetric and spectral data and the digital image processing, and gives full control of the characterization process and the management of the obtained data to the user. On the other hand, this study presents a further analysis of the main factors affecting the characterization, such as the camera built-in sensor, the camera parameters, the illuminant, the regression model, and the data set used for model training. For computing the transformation equations, the literature recommends the use of polynomial equations as a regression model. Thus, polynomial models are considered as a starting point in this thesis. Additionally, a regression model based on Gaussian processes has been applied, and the results obtained by means of polynomials have been compared. Also, a new working scheme was reported which allows the automatic selection of color samples, adapted to the chromatic range of the scene. This scheme is called P-ASK, based on the K-means classification algorithm. The results achieved in this thesis show that the proposed framework for camera characterization is highly applicable in documentation and conservation tasks in general cultural heritage applications, and particularly in rock art painting. It is a low-cost and non-invasive methodology that allows for the colorimetric recording from complete image scenes. Once characterized, a conventional digital camera can be used for rigorous color determination, simulating a colorimeter. Thus, it is possible to work in a physical color space, independent of the device used, and comparable with data obtained from other cameras that are also characterized.

Full textUniversity libraries in French-speaking African countries face a documentary supply challenge in a context of a lack of financial resources, an increase in the cost of documentation, and some inefficient organizational forms. This thesis aims at first, from surveys and collections of diverse data, to establish the state of the paper and digital documentary offer at the University Cheikh Anta Diop of Dakar, in SHS, highlighting points comparison with other Sub-Saharan Francophone Universities. The results are intended to quantify and qualify this offer, to point out new dynamics in the context of digital documentation with different types of actors. In addition, librarians seek to rely fully on Open Access, both in terms of access to resources and the value of local funds. Digital information is increasingly seen as the best way to meet the information needs of the university community at Dakar's Cheikh Anta Diop University (UCAD). Nevertheless, it is often confronted with problems of access to information but also of use of documentary resources. This research focuses, in a second part, to appreciate the uses of digital resources, in a comparative way between several disciplines at UCAD and between teachers and students. Recommendations are made to try to improve the documentary services in this University

This thesis presents a study on methods and low-cost techniques for historic sites surveys, it starts with the concepts of culture heritage and the first international recommendations for conservation and restoration of monuments, this study discussed about the evolution of the concern for the protection of property in Brazil and the various inventories already made. It presented the survey technologies for architectural documentation based on images with emphasis on Digital Photogrammetry, the concepts and processes involved the requirements and guidelines for photogrammetric surveys and the main photogrammetric software used to restitution. The survey also addressed the problem of features extraction from digital images, discussing the concepts and processing steps. The practical part presents some case studies that allowed to the apprehending and also the testing of three tools (PhotoModeler, Orthoware and Sphera package), as a way to assess quality, limits and potential to generate products as orthophotos, ortofotomosaico and facades restitution drawings, which were used as data source for generating geometric models. Still, experiments for automatic feature extraction were performed (automatic vectorization) of images in order to facilitate the process of vectorization from orthophotos. Digital Photogrammetry proved to be a handy low-cost tool, which meets the existing demand for documentation, as quickly and accurately as possible, but in order to make this possible is necessary to know the different techniques, the definition of the desired products and existing survey methods to select the most appropriate technique.

Full textThe VLSI design complexity, due to the number of involved tools, the enormous generated data volume and the complex nature of the data, was the main cause of the appearance of the frameworks in the end of the 80's. Frameworks are platforms that support the development of design environments and, as their main purpose, liberate the VLSI designers from the supplementary tasks in the design process, as the data management. It makes possible to direct efforts exclusively to obtaining better results, in shorter time and with lower costs. To this purpose, many techniques have been used in the implementation of frameworks. One of these techniques is known as design steps documentation. The design steps documentation is a resource used to keep the design history (usually, executed tools and generated data). It has been widely used in various frameworks. But none of them take full advantage of this resource. Some of them use the design steps documentation only in the data management services. Others, use it only in the design management services. So, the proposal of this work is to create a system that takes full advantage of the design steps documentation, providing information and services to other sub-systems of the framework to complement their functionality, making them more powerful.

Full textWhat do we know about scientific knowledge practices in the specific context of the French event « Festival of science »? The research studies this question. We have chosen to investigate three stands in a “Life sciences village” about bones and articulations, underground water and sand. Activities are being carried out by scientists; the public can come from schools, but can also be a general public. We investigate in the scientists preparation of the event in their laboratory, and we look at their ordinary activity too. We observe students of an elementary school before, during and after the event. We refer to the theoretical frameworks of the Joint Action Theory in Didactics, and the Documentational Approach. Our qualitative method is based on case studies. The central data we analyze are videos shot during the investigations. We develop a suitable methodology for this research, based on image processing and digital data curation. We provide descriptions, analysis and results with text-picture-sound hybrid systems. We map out a typology of didactic transactions in the case of joint work of teachers with the same group of students. In this specific framework, we contribute to model concepts as: the genesis triplets (topo genesis, meso genesis and chrono genesis), the didactic transactions, the semiosis process. The research highlights that the activity of didactisation of scientific practices is contiguous with and parallel to its production. It is necessary within research labs themselves and has to adjust to the public. In the stands all knowledge practices are studied: some knowledge practices, inconsistent with scientific knowledge, are replaced in their original context. The activity of didactisation associates knowledge practices (consistent with scientific knowledge) with this scientific knowledge. Its aim is to bring the views of the public closer from those of the scientists. Researchers communicate their scientific activity to a public of non-specialists with artifacts which evidence phenomena. These artefacts are linked and associated with other material and symbolic, semiotic and proxemic, resources. The empiric work had been done in a specific context and with a particular public. These results now need to be implemented in other situations. Methodological and technological resources must be further developed and tested in other research
