Abstract:
The accelerating development of digital technology along with the Internet has opened up for new types of media use. It is crucial for marketers and companies to understand the wants and needs of the growing consumer sector and especially the younger audience who consume media through new types of technology. This thesis presents a study of the differences in television and video consumption and interaction behavior between the two groups called Digital Natives and Digital Immigrants. Based on the research findings, the goal of this study was to discuss how the television landscape of the future could look and how to design a TV-application that takes the future adult generation, the Digital Natives, specific needs into consideration. This was done by reading up on existing research and trend reports, conducting interviews and usability tests with an existing TV-application, and lastly distributing a survey. The results from both interviews and the survey showed that the two groups’ behavior and preferences regarding TV and video consumption and interaction differed in many aspects. The reasons for watching video differed substantially between the groups, leading to the belief that the future TV landscape should look different from what it does today. Based on the findings, three user based personas and scenarios were created and two design workshops were held to brainstorm concepts of how to design for these personas. Lastly, three design concepts that could work in a future TV application were created and presented.<br>En snabb utveckling av digital teknologi tillsammans med Internet har öppnat upp för nya sätt att använda media.

Abstract:
Studiens teoretiska perspektiv grundas i fyra olika begrepp.

Åberg, Sabina, and Åkerman Matilda Larsson.

Full text
Abstract:
A smartphone works like a PDA and you can use it to read email, surf the Internet, log on to social networks such as Facebook and Twitter, read news, play games, solve crossword puzzles, shoot and record videos, and more. The aim of this thesis was to examine the differences in attitudes between students and teachers as well as men and women on the use of smartphones in higher education. As for students and teachers, Prensky's (2001) theory of digital natives and digital immigrants was used. In this sense, we wanted to find out if there were significant differences between those who were born in 1980 or later and those who were born before 1980. The results reveal that students have a more positive attitude towards the use of smartphones in higher education compared to teachers. They also show that women have a more positive attitude towards the use of smartphones in higher education compared to men.

Füller, William, and Oona Heiska. "Born to work virtually? An exploration of digital natives and digital immigrants’ perceptions of organising the virtual workplace." Thesis, Jönköping University, Internationella Handelshögskolan, 2020. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:hj:diva-48608.

Full text
Abstract:
Virtuality of work has become increasingly important in the modern work environment due to globalization and increased technological development. Further, the workforce being composed of digital natives and digital immigrants with varying levels of technical abilities might have implications on organising virtual work due to different perceptions. Therefore, the purpose of our study is to understand how and why digital natives and digital immigrants differ in their perceptions of organising virtual work. In order to gain understanding of this an exploratory, qualitative research design was chosen. Data was collected from ten digital immigrants and ten digital natives and then analysed with a content analysis. The results showed that there are many similarities as well as differences between the populations. Beyond the populations, the findings suggest that work values as well as the usage of ICTs influence how the challenges and opportunities of performing work virtually are perceived by the individuals. Further, these challenges and opportunities shape the perceptions regarding the organisation of virtual work. These findings advance research in the field of virtual work through discussing the differences in perceptions between the populations and beyond them through the conceptual model on how perceptions about organising virtual work are formed. Additionally, the findings can benefit managers to understand their employees better and therefore create better virtual work environments for the future.

Abstract:

Abstract Title: The old generation and the New World - A qualitative content analysis of media usage of the older generation Keywords:Digital natives, digital immigrants, diffusion of innovation, content analysis This study has its focus on how the older generation looks at today's media society and the use of today's media. Through a method of qualitative content analysis based on questionnaires, the aim is to examine what the older generation thinks about today's media, how they use them, and whether there are differences in groups according to age and previous work. The study selected theories bases on Marc Prenskys idea of digital natives, digital immigrants and Everett M Rogers book on "Diffusion of Innovation". These theories take up the difference on digital natives and digital immigrants and the spread of new technological ideas takes place through communication over different channels in time among causes people in a social system. The result of the study shows that many older people are good at making use of today's media, but also that many may feel alienation of today's media society. Development has proceeded rapidly in recent years and for the older generation it's sometimes hard to keep up. The conclusion of the study is that the older generation may need more help to discover how today's media can facilitate everyday life and enrich it with more communication despite the fact that it takes place through a screen.

Rosendahl, Patricia. "Digital capital: a mode of bridging capital for immigrant and refugee population." Thesis, Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/10948/3645.

Full text
Abstract:
The resettlement of immigrant and refugee populations poses specific challenges to new host communities. Municipalities must find resources to assist these populations in transitioning into a new culture. Immediate needs are often adequate housing, health care, and primary schooling. While this transitioning process is still in play, the search for employment begins; often at the cost of consideration of longer-term needs, such as English or other host country language acquisition and planning for long-term career goals. Theorists in the field of social capital postulate that bonding and bridging social capital offers benefits for populations adjusting to new communities. Connections to like-minded individuals or pre-existing ethnic ties (bonding social capital) can provide support important to the well-being of individuals going through difficult social adjustments while connecting with new social groups (bridging social capital) can provide new information leading to expanding opportunities. The concept of bridging social capital for immigrant and refugee populations is the subject of this research study. It is situated within the context of our digital age in which information communication technology (ICT) is the primary mode of access to information and services. For the purpose of this thesis, the capability to exploit this mode of communication is thus identified as “digital capital.” As more and more governmental, educational, and social services are distributed within a technological environment, it is necessary to examine this mode of connection to information as a form of capital which can be viewed in a similar framework to other types of social capital. Access to technology and ICTs has been considered an integral element of the Development Goals as adopted by the United Nations for the Year 2000 Millennium Goals. Though later debates have questioned how ICTs may have benefited development goals, the pervasiveness of this form of information flow continues. Within Development Studies, Sen’s theory on the Capability Approach offers a valuable opportunity of connecting digital capital to development. Just as the Capabilities Approach accommodates the diversity of human values, characteristics, and functionings, so can digital capital provide flexibility through adaptation by the users to tailor the medium to meet specific needs. It is this freedom to adjust to individual needs and goals that allows this mode of bridging capital to hold a distinct advantage for immigrants and refugees who are searching for effective links into new social networks in the job search process. The role of the community college system has been at the forefront of providing educational training and social acclimation for this population in their quest for economic self-sufficiency in the resettlement process. A greater understanding of the role that technology plays in the success of immigrant and refugee resettlement is vitally important for the well-being of communities undergoing dynamic demographic change.

Brinkman-Kealey, Renee. "A qualitative phenomenological analysis exploring digital immigrants' use of church-based computer-supported collaborative learning." Thesis, University of Phoenix, 2013. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=3569341.

Full text
Abstract:
<p>Individuals and societies have traditionally sought answers to important questions in life through religion. In the 21st century, physical churches with clergy are no longer the sole source of spiritual answers or knowledge. Since the late 1960s, church attendance has been declining. Church leaders have begun to implement new methods such as using the Internet as a resource to support the needs of church members. While digital natives&mdash;persons who are conversant with the Internet&mdash;view electronic communication as a means to express ideas and feelings, digital immigrants&mdash;for whom the Internet is new&mdash;lag behind in utilizing the Internet. The purpose of the qualitative phenomenological study was to explore the lived experiences of digital immigrants who used a Computer Supported Collaborative Learning church website to understand how the Internet affects their perceptions of religious identity. The findings revealed that the participants were unfamiliar with sharing knowledge through computer supported collaborative learning. The findings also showed that the benefits of CSCL were recognized by digital immigrants, but Church leaders may need to learn how to provide training and support for digital immigrants by blending face-to-face sermons and reflective CSCL engagement. </p>
