Abstract:
The accelerating development of digital technology along with the Internet has opened up for new types of media use. It is crucial for marketers and companies to understand the wants and needs of the growing consumer sector and especially the younger audience who consume media through new types of technology. This thesis presents a study of the differences in television and video consumption and interaction behavior between the two groups called Digital Natives and Digital Immigrants. Based on the research findings, the goal of this study was to discuss how the television landscape of the future could look and how to design a TV-application that takes the future adult generation, the Digital Natives, specific needs into consideration. This was done by reading up on existing research and trend reports, conducting interviews and usability tests with an existing TV-application, and lastly distributing a survey. The results from both interviews and the survey showed that the two groups’ behavior and preferences regarding TV and video consumption and interaction differed in many aspects. The reasons for watching video differed substantially between the groups, leading to the belief that the future TV landscape should look different from what it does today. Based on the findings, three user based personas and scenarios were created and two design workshops were held to brainstorm concepts of how to design for these personas. Lastly, three design concepts that could work in a future TV application were created and presented.<br>En snabb utveckling av digital teknologi tillsammans med Internet har öppnat upp för nya sätt att använda media.

Abstract:
Studiens teoretiska perspektiv grundas i fyra olika begrepp.

Full text
Abstract:
A smartphone works like a PDA and you can use it to read email, surf the Internet, log on to social networks such as Facebook and Twitter, read news, play games, solve crossword puzzles, shoot and record videos, and more. The aim of this thesis was to examine the differences in attitudes between students and teachers as well as men and women on the use of smartphones in higher education. As for students and teachers, Prensky's (2001) theory of digital natives and digital immigrants was used. In this sense, we wanted to find out if there were significant differences between those who were born in 1980 or later and those who were born before 1980. The results reveal that students have a more positive attitude towards the use of smartphones in higher education compared to teachers. They also show that women have a more positive attitude towards the use of smartphones in higher education compared to men.

Full text
Abstract:
Virtuality of work has become increasingly important in the modern work environment due to globalization and increased technological development. Further, the workforce being composed of digital natives and digital immigrants with varying levels of technical abilities might have implications on organising virtual work due to different perceptions. Therefore, the purpose of our study is to understand how and why digital natives and digital immigrants differ in their perceptions of organising virtual work. In order to gain understanding of this an exploratory, qualitative research design was chosen. Data was collected from ten digital immigrants and ten digital natives and then analysed with a content analysis. The results showed that there are many similarities as well as differences between the populations. Beyond the populations, the findings suggest that work values as well as the usage of ICTs influence how the challenges and opportunities of performing work virtually are perceived by the individuals. Further, these challenges and opportunities shape the perceptions regarding the organisation of virtual work. These findings advance research in the field of virtual work through discussing the differences in perceptions between the populations and beyond them through the conceptual model on how perceptions about organising virtual work are formed. Additionally, the findings can benefit managers to understand their employees better and therefore create better virtual work environments for the future.

Abstract:

Abstract Title: The old generation and the New World - A qualitative content analysis of media usage of the older generation Keywords:Digital natives, digital immigrants, diffusion of innovation, content analysis This study has its focus on how the older generation looks at today's media society and the use of today's media. Through a method of qualitative content analysis based on questionnaires, the aim is to examine what the older generation thinks about today's media, how they use them, and whether there are differences in groups according to age and previous work. The study selected theories bases on Marc Prenskys idea of digital natives, digital immigrants and Everett M Rogers book on "Diffusion of Innovation". These theories take up the difference on digital natives and digital immigrants and the spread of new technological ideas takes place through communication over different channels in time among causes people in a social system. The result of the study shows that many older people are good at making use of today's media, but also that many may feel alienation of today's media society. Development has proceeded rapidly in recent years and for the older generation it's sometimes hard to keep up. The conclusion of the study is that the older generation may need more help to discover how today's media can facilitate everyday life and enrich it with more communication despite the fact that it takes place through a screen.

Rosendahl, Patricia. "Digital capital: a mode of bridging capital for immigrant and refugee population." Thesis, Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/10948/3645.

Full text
Abstract:
The resettlement of immigrant and refugee populations poses specific challenges to new host communities. Municipalities must find resources to assist these populations in transitioning into a new culture. Immediate needs are often adequate housing, health care, and primary schooling. While this transitioning process is still in play, the search for employment begins; often at the cost of consideration of longer-term needs, such as English or other host country language acquisition and planning for long-term career goals. Theorists in the field of social capital postulate that bonding and bridging social capital offers benefits for populations adjusting to new communities. Connections to like-minded individuals or pre-existing ethnic ties (bonding social capital) can provide support important to the well-being of individuals going through difficult social adjustments while connecting with new social groups (bridging social capital) can provide new information leading to expanding opportunities. The concept of bridging social capital for immigrant and refugee populations is the subject of this research study. It is situated within the context of our digital age in which information communication technology (ICT) is the primary mode of access to information and services. For the purpose of this thesis, the capability to exploit this mode of communication is thus identified as “digital capital.” As more and more governmental, educational, and social services are distributed within a technological environment, it is necessary to examine this mode of connection to information as a form of capital which can be viewed in a similar framework to other types of social capital. Access to technology and ICTs has been considered an integral element of the Development Goals as adopted by the United Nations for the Year 2000 Millennium Goals. Though later debates have questioned how ICTs may have benefited development goals, the pervasiveness of this form of information flow continues. Within Development Studies, Sen’s theory on the Capability Approach offers a valuable opportunity of connecting digital capital to development. Just as the Capabilities Approach accommodates the diversity of human values, characteristics, and functionings, so can digital capital provide flexibility through adaptation by the users to tailor the medium to meet specific needs. It is this freedom to adjust to individual needs and goals that allows this mode of bridging capital to hold a distinct advantage for immigrants and refugees who are searching for effective links into new social networks in the job search process. The role of the community college system has been at the forefront of providing educational training and social acclimation for this population in their quest for economic self-sufficiency in the resettlement process. A greater understanding of the role that technology plays in the success of immigrant and refugee resettlement is vitally important for the well-being of communities undergoing dynamic demographic change.

Abstract:
<p>Individuals and societies have traditionally sought answers to important questions in life through religion. In the 21st century, physical churches with clergy are no longer the sole source of spiritual answers or knowledge. Since the late 1960s, church attendance has been declining. Church leaders have begun to implement new methods such as using the Internet as a resource to support the needs of church members. While digital natives&mdash;persons who are conversant with the Internet&mdash;view electronic communication as a means to express ideas and feelings, digital immigrants&mdash;for whom the Internet is new&mdash;lag behind in utilizing the Internet. The purpose of the qualitative phenomenological study was to explore the lived experiences of digital immigrants who used a Computer Supported Collaborative Learning church website to understand how the Internet affects their perceptions of religious identity. The findings revealed that the participants were unfamiliar with sharing knowledge through computer supported collaborative learning. The findings also showed that the benefits of CSCL were recognized by digital immigrants, but Church leaders may need to learn how to provide training and support for digital immigrants by blending face-to-face sermons and reflective CSCL engagement. </p>

Abstract:

Abstract:
This research aims to investigate how the Internet can contribute to the teaching of Italian as a foreign language, through the analysis of the digital writing of students from a course with a focus on culture, of their participation in the blog of this course, as well as from questionnaires answered by them. The study is based on three theoretical frameworks: Longs Interaction Hypothesis (1981), in Applied Linguistics and Language Acquisition, studies on Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) in Language Teaching, and studies on Digital Literacies. The research is longitudinal, based on a qualitative approach, and the method used is the case study. Data were obtained from a course in Italian culture, developed and taught by us in 2013, along with the extracurricular courses of Italian language and culture of the Italian on Campus, offered by the Faculty of Philosophy, Languages and Literature, and Human Sciences (FFLCH) of the University of São Paulo. The purpose of the course was to conduct a virtual journey through Italy, its language and culture, using the Internet during the lessons and outside them. In addition, we have created a collective blog that featured the participation of the students of the course. The participants were all digital immigrants, according to the term proposed by Prensky (2001), who presented different levels of linguistic and digital literacies. The survey data are formed by questionnaires answered by the participants of the course, by drafts and original versions of the texts produced by them, by their posts and comments published on the blog, by a few e-mails written by them, and by our evaluation of changes in the students concerning the use of Internet and some other aspects observed during the course. Regarding the textual production of the participants, the analysis pointed out the following contributions from the use of the Internet and the blog: increase of vocabulary due to the input offered, greater agility in writing, and more ease in expressing themselves in Italian. The analysis indicated that the level of digital literacies of students enables them to a greater or lesser participation in the blog, but it is not a determining factor. It is necessary also to take into account the preference for oral or written skills, the importance ascribed to the writing on learning, some expectations about the course, the age, and an independent or autonomous attitude of students towards learning. The results demonstrated changes in the autonomy of students, suggesting a particular case of autonomy: learning to learn from the Internet. Another result observed was the greater use of Internet and technological resources in Italian studies by the students.

Abstract:
This thesis looks to explore from a user-centered standpoint, which mobile application features are relevant in the social integration of new arrivals in Sweden. Mobiles are used by individuals who are moving away from home not only to stay connected to their close ones but also as a way for empowerment and adaption in their new homes. Access to information helps immigrants to face the new challenges new host societies present. Nowadays mobiles and more specifically smartphones are becoming the principal sources for new arrivals to obtain information. As mobiles become more common among immigration groups, governments and institutions are turning to them as new ways for addressing migration challenges such as integration. This thesis, through a participatory design study, explores possible mobile digital application features that could be relevant in the social integration of immigrants. The goal is to develop through a cooperative and co-design method a prototype of a mobile application that can fit better with the necessities of new arrivals and can also facilitate better ways for social integration. As a result, it could be determinate that features that provide users the ability to gather information from one source are the most important for immigrants. Additionally, users want to be able to have control over the information they are receiving according to what phase they are at the integration process. Also, digital features seem not to be enough and digital and offline cooperation are suggested. In the process, participants provided innovative ways on how integration challenges can be addressed.

Abstract:

Doctor of Philosophy<br>Department of Sociology, Anthropology, and Social Work<br>Richard Goe<br>Asian-Indians represent an important component of the professional and ‘high-tech’ workers in the U.S. Research on this population has found that majority of these workers are temporary workers working on a contractual jobs. Further, it is not unusual for Indian immigrant workers to get married and have children while in the U.S. As such, they must learn to negotiate the U.S. cultural terrain in both their place of work and home life. This provides the potential that they will become transnational by developing identities and engaging in cultural and social practices from two different nations, India and the U.S. This dissertation investigates the nature and extent of transnational practices adopted by high-tech Indian workers employed by U.S. firms on a temporary work visa. In summary, the purpose of this research is to explore and describe the prevalence and practice of transnationalism among Indian high-tech workers employed by U.S. firms on a temporary work visa and its impact on their lives.  The study uses a mixed-methods research (Ivankova, Creswell and Stick, 2007), where quantitative survey and qualitative data collection are used in single study to understand the stated research problem. Also, as there is no formal list of Indian IT professionals working in the U.S. at contractual jobs, the data collection will be carried out through the non-random chain-referral sampling technique. A detailed survey and personal interview will be used to measure various micro aspects of these workers' lives including consumption patterns, recreational choices, socialization, cultural beliefs and family dynamics. The study reveals that the temporary stay of these professionals in the U.S. along with their families necessitates day-to-day negotiations between two cultures in terms of their food, clothing, recreation, and daily activities creating a transnational life style for these young professionals. The responses reflect the inner struggle of these professionals between their long-term goals of settling in India with their families and the current material life in a far-away land of opportunity. On one hand, the dualism of living in the U.S. as an Indian is demonstrated in this study by the convergence of the disparate elements of both aspects of their lives, work, incomes and remittances; on other hand, family, social life, religion, consumption patterns, and recreation activities provide the glimpse of a dual life. All of these cultural and social practices can be considered as the combination of transnationalism from ‘above’ and ‘below’ as noted by Smith and Guarnizo (1998). Transnational activities at the work place, which is forced by the work culture of the MNCs that employ them, can be considered as ‘transnationalism from above’. Simultaneously, being bi-lingual at home, cooking and eating Indian and Western food, socializing with Indian and American friends outside work, and all those cultural activities they perform on a day-to-day basis, indicates ‘transnationalism from below’. Overall, through this study, I have described important aspects of the transnational lives of Indian IT professionals, who try to maintain a fine balance between faster assimilation of American culture which might help them at the work place while simultaneously retaining much of their ‘Indian-ness’ so that going back to India never poses a problem when their visa expires. In a way, the lives of this particular group of professionals can be viewed as those of temporary-enclave residential workers.

Abstract:
The rise of the digital technology, social networking or interactivity have an extensive impact on what is happening in virtual world. Users of Internet are more and more often introduced to the new available on-line tools. Some of them have adapted those new trends with no problems and they have been taking an advantage of them with an ease, whereas others have had problems with converting themselves into the new digital era. Alternatively, others are not fascinated by what Internet offers or they simply cannot afford it due to many circumstances. However, with no doubts, we can say that the Internet and the digital revolution brought about many issues to discuss or to have a research about. To some extent, new trends, especially the expansion of the Internet, are affecting all traditional media and this, in my opinion, might result in the new phenomena like potential division of society into Digital Natives and Digital Immigrants proposed by Prensky (2001a).The project focused on investigating motives for choosing sport websites by both groups with special consideration of interactivity factor. The motives have been checked via in-depth interviews using the sample of ten interviewees both private and professional users of Polish sport informative websites. I wanted to check whether my results either duplicate what Prensky described in his articles or they confirm contradictive opinion given by VanSlyke.Additionally, I have compared those most popular motives with sample of five most often visited Polish sport informative websites, according to Alexa rank (2012). The level of interactivity on those websites was assessed by an appearance of examples of new new media like blogs, podcasts, number of posts on Facebook fan pages, created account on Twitter or channel on YouTube (Levinson, 2010). Also possibility of commenting was taken into consideration. Having checked those variables via cyber ethnography method (secondary method) I was able to identify which of the sampled websites could be considered as most interactive one.Despite persisting limitations, the method has brought reliable and valid data, according to which I have given my conclusions by answering research questions stated at the beginning of this project.

Park, Jiwoo. "(RE)CONSTRUCTING ETHNIC IDENTITIES: DIGITAL MEDIA AS AN IMPORTANT PLATFORM AMONG THE CHILDREN OF KOREAN IMMIGRANTS IN THE U.S." OpenSIUC, 2016. https://opensiuc.lib.siu.edu/dissertations/1202.

Full text
Abstract:
According to Portes and Rumbaut (2001), the second generation children of immigrants seem to renegotiate their ethnic identities. This tendency is known in research literature as “segmented assimilation,” meaning that identity is constantly in-process and evolving in modern society. Under the influence of digital media, immigrant children positioned between two cultural worlds not only communicate more regularly with their families and friends in their homeland, but they can also potentially cultivate the future development of their ethnic identities through their interactions with digital media devices. This research specifically examined the role of digital media devices as important tools for the children of Korean immigrants in the U.S. to maintain social relationships and cultural links to Korea, which are instrumental to ethnic identity formation, by drawing on 31 photo-elicitation interviews (PEIs) and 162 completed surveys with the children of Korean immigrants residing in the U.S. The findings from the data analysis reveal a compelling picture of the types of digital media devices these youths use, the distinct patterns of their social interaction via these devices in the context of their everyday lives, and the role of these devices in helping them maintain their ethnic distinctiveness. More specifically, the adoption rate of KakaoTalk implies a cultural phenomenon, with data indicating that 77% of the survey participants use it to keep in touch with local co-ethnic friends or friends and family in Korea. Based on their photos and responses, their frequent use of KakaoTalk on their smartphones revolutionized the way in which they keep their family and friends overseas an essential part of their daily lives and prevent family fragmentation despite the geographical distance. Furthermore, when asked to identify their ethnic group for the most commonly reported ethnic group analysis, the survey participants provided six different responses on the MEIM–R, the most common of which was Korean American (41%). This result shows consistency with the results of the PEIs, in which 30 of 31 interviewees identified themselves as Korean American. In conclusion, the results of this study challenge the assumptions of early assimilationist scholars, who argued that the longer recent immigrants and their descendants reside in the U.S., the more assimilated they will become, meaning that they will inevitably adopt American ways of life and learn to identify as Americans. Although existing research on ethnic identification using segmented assimilation theory emphasized several factors that reinforce ethnic identity formation, this research has demonstrated how digital media add another dimension to assimilation processes among the children of Korean immigrants in the U.S. in terms of ethnic identification. Based on the interviewees’ and survey participants’ responses, most of the children of Korean immigrants in the U.S. seem to cultivate themselves in everyday life by oscillating between America and Korea using digital media devices. As a result, the nearly ubiquitous presence of digital media technologies and the social interactions that occur therein have afforded them opportunities to both explore and commit to their ethnic identities in the face of mainstream American culture.

Lindgren, Marielle, and Marie Roos. Abstract:
The digitalisation of public services such as banking services has increased significantly over the past decade. This increase has contributed to both advantages and disadvantages, as it has created comprehensive accessibility of services for the majority of the population but limitations for those individuals who do not have sufficient competence regarding new technology. This essay examines how digital immigrants, the generation born before digitalisation, experience and manage digitalisation in the banking sector. Furthermore, it examines which methods can facilitate learning for the payment of bills and invoices via online banking. The purpose of the study is to raise awareness of the elderlys' attitudes and needs as well as to support the learning system of digitised banking services. The study is based on a deductive approach since the theory has initially been collected to carry out the quantitative and qualitative methods, which have been the basis of the study's empirical material. A quantitative survey has been conducted to gather information on digital immigrants' attitudes and management of digitised banking services. Through a qualitative experiment with observations, two different types of learning methods in the form of paper instructions and video instructions have been examined. The result shows difficulties in the use and learning of new technology by the elderly due to physical and cognitive impairments, which in turn affect the interest and motivation to learn it. Moreover, the result shows that the use of instructional guides supports the learning system of digitised banking services and increases the user experience. The conclusion is that paper instructions are adapted to the needs of the older generation regarding physical and cognitive impairments. Additionally, these types of instructions create an understanding of the learning of new technologies such as conducting banking online. Adaptation according to the needs of the elderly and the motivation required for them to learn new technology is something that the banks should take into consideration, which means that responsibility rests with them.

Abstract:
This surveys hypothesis is based on the notion that all citizens have the right to access information of the municipality they live in. The aim of the study is to examine how residents of Vilhelmina municipality take note of the current information, and also how they would proceed to access information in the future. In order to conceptualise the results these following theories were used: digital divide, digital immigrants, digital native, uses and gratification theory, social capital, communications strategies and two-way communication. The survey is conducted with four focus group interviews and one separate interview with a person working at the municipal office. The focus groups were divided into age categories in order to see the similarities and differences between the groups' media habits and preferences of future communications. The study material consists of the transcribed texts from the abovementioned interviews. The results of this research demonstrate that there is significant difference between age groups. According to the early theory of digital divide the gap in information between groups exists only due to the individual’s ability to access the Internet, which not match this study’s results. More current updates of the theory of digital divide declare that motivation may be a cause to the gap.  During the course of this research the issue of motivation emerged and a few of the interview participants stated motivation to find information as a key point. With the help of the participants requests communications strategies were presented for future communication based on the target groups' media choices.<br>Undersökningens utgångspunkt är att alla medborgare har rätt att ta del av information av kommunen de bor i.

Abstract:
The purpose of this mixed-method study was to investigate digital native preservice teachers’ self-efficacy beliefs regarding their technology experiences and skills at the beginning and at the end of their field placement semester. Digital natives, as defined by Prensky (2001), are students born after 1980 who have been raised with digital media and spend a great deal of time engaging with digital devices. Factors that could impact changes in these participants’ technology integration self-efficacy beliefs were also analyzed. This study used pre- and post-surveys, face-to-face interviews with a portion of the respondents, and a document review of course materials and lesson plans. Twenty-one preservice students, enrolled in the second to last semester of a teacher preparation program, at a small mid Atlantic university during the fall, 2011 semester participated. The quantitative portion involved the online administration of the Technology Integration Survey at the beginning and at the conclusion of the field placement experience. For the qualitative portion, nine participants were purposefully selected for interviews in an effort to more fully understand participants’ experiences and how these experiences impacted their self-efficacy beliefs about technology integration during the semester. In order to triangulate the data, results of the quantitative phase of the study were then compared with the results from the qualitative phase of the study. The findings of this mixed-method study suggested that digital native preservice teachers’ self-efficacy beliefs to integrate technology into their teaching improved slightly over the course of the semester. In addition, a strong relationship was found between participants’ Post-Test Technology Skills scores and Post-Test Self-Efficacy scores, indicating that an increase in technology skills corresponded with an increase in self-efficacy (r = .684, p = 0.001). Qualitative results pointed to mentor support, time, and access to technology during their field placement experiences as factors for integrating technology into their instruction. Additionally, results indicated that participants had access to and spent a considerable amount of time on computers every day. They were proficient with basic technologies but reported lower proficiency with more difficult technologies. Yet, results also suggested that, while this group of digital native preservice teachers has grown up in the digital age, their practice and, more importantly, their fundamental understanding of integrating technology into their instructional practices was limited.

Abstract:
Abstract                                                    This thesis provides an in-depth research of five VR suppliers working with creating VR experiences targeted to elderly within the elder care sector in Sweden. Furthermore, a technological knowledge gap between elderly and VR technology are researched. The focus of this thesis is therefore how VR suppliers, as early adopters, design VR experiences to elderly, as digital immigrants. To investigate the chosen topics, two research questions was formulated; RQ1. How do VR suppliers design a VR experience targeted to digital immigrants within the elderly care sector? RQ2. How do VR suppliers, as early adopters, bridge the digital gap between VR-technology and digital immigrants?  This thesis constitutes of a qualitative research where the empirical findings are based on interviews with the VR suppliers. The research took an inductive approach in order to get close to the respondents and interpret their realities. Theories about Customer experience, Value, Value Co-creation, Digital immigrants and Early and Late adopters, have thereafter helped to connect the empirical findings with aspects within these theories, to further understand important aspects for the VR suppliers when they design their VR experiences.  The results of the study present the aspects that are important to take under consideration when VR suppliers design their VR experiences towards elderly within the elder care sector. A model showing the steps when designing the VR experience has been provided and constitutes of identifying needs, customize the service, create trust and security, set the environment, inform and educate personnel, handling impairments and bridging the gap. Furthermore, the participants confirmed a knowledge gap within technology amongst elderly and that there is a need to bridge the gap in order for the VR service to be successfully implemented.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to investigate which digital tools are used in SFI teaching of adult students without school background and how these tools are used, what abilities the students practice and what significance digital tools have in these students language learning. To investigate this, I have used a method combination of structured observations in two A-groups as well as semi-structured interviews with two teachers in these groups. The results show that the digital tools used in the A-course are Ipad and apps, Smart Notebook/Smartboard, Computer, Lunis and Powerpoint. These tools are mostly used for individual work, but there are times when some of these tools are used in full class. With the help of these tools, students practice the ability to listen and understand, speak (pronounce), read and understand, write and work independently. The results also show a fairly small interaction between students while working with digital tools. Teachers’ perceptions are that digital tools are of great importance in the language learning of adult learners without a school background. According to the teachers, digital tools offer a wide variety of opportunities for these students to practice and develop all language skills. The study also shows that there are certain areas that can be developed.

Abstract:
This study investigated how experienced teachers learned Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) during their professional development. With the introduction of ICT, experienced teachers encountered change becoming virtually displaced persons – digital immigrants; new settlers – endeavouring to obtain digital citizenship in order to survive in the information age. In the process, these teachers moved from learning how to push buttons, to applying software, and finally to changing their practice. They learned collectively and individually, in communities and networks, like immigrants and adult learners: by doing, experimenting and reflecting on ICT. Unfortunately, for these teachers-as-pedagogues, their focus on pedagogical theory during the action research they conducted, was not fully investigated or embraced during the year-long study. This study used a participant observation qualitative methodology to follow teachers in their university classroom. Interviews were conducted and documentation collected and verified by the teacher educator. The application of Kolb‘s, Gardner‘s, and Vygotsky‘s work allowed for the observation of these teachers within their sociocultural contexts. Kolb‘s work helped to understand their learning processes and Gardner‘s work indicated the learning abilities that these teachers valued in the new ICT environment. Meanwhile Vygotsky‘s work – and in particular three concepts, uchit, perezhivanija, and mislenija – presented a richer and more informed basis to understand immigration and change. Finally, this research proposes that teachers learn ICT through what is termed a hyperuchit model, consisting of developments; action; interaction; and reflection. The recommendation is that future teacher university ICT professional learning incorporates this hyperuchit model.

Abstract:
Children and teenagers of today have grown up with digital media. According to Olle Findahl's report "The Swedes and the Internet" (2009), adults as well as children are online more and more. Our experience is that at many workplaces as good as everyone use computers and everyone is expected to have digital skills. However at most schools the reality is far from this. According to Findahl's report from 2009, 99 percent of all pupils (in Sweden) have access to computers and Internet, yet it is rare that they get school assignments where the use of Internet is acquired (Findahl 2009). The purpose of our paper is to understand how digital media can be used as a resource for learning, through the perspective of young people. The goal of this study is to understand how pupils make meaning2of digital media as a resource for learning. Therefore we found it essential to examine how the conditions and opportunities in the schools affect young people's reflections. In order to achieve this we chose to use qualitative data collection methods such as observations and unstructured group interviews. We observed two different classes of core subjects, and conducted two unstructured group interviews with pupils from Tumba gymnasium. One of our results, and the most essential one, was a pattern of an abstract phenomenon. Teachers describe students as fed up and unmotivated, the students themselves say that "it's just boring". This is a fact that is accepted by teachers and students without deeper reflection. "It's school." We refer to this phenomenon as "the abstract tediousness" which constitutes the core of our analysis. "The abstract tediousness" is the result of what happens when teachers do not make meaning of what they are teaching their pupils, which therefore makes the pupils feel uninvolved. The absence of creative tasks and a structure of hierarchy where the presence of the pupils is of greater importance than the assignment itself, also contributes to "the abstract tediousness". Another element that can be explained by the phenomenon "the abstract tediousness" is that pupils can’t make relevant digital media because they get caught up in an endless argument about the importance of grades. Our conclusion is that the pupils cannot make relevant digital media as a resource for learning because the schools fail in explaining the importance of learning.

Abstract:
In Sweden, the mobile application Mobilt BankID, with its 7,8 million users as of 2020 is among the most frequently used ways to confirm one's identity over the internet or to provide authorisation by digital signatures. The application is developed by Finansiell ID-Teknik AB, a company owned by the banks and is accepted as valid proof of identity by a wide range of e-services provided by the government, healthcare, banks and various companies. As reported by Swedish media there has been a high volume of frauds related to the use of Mobilt BankID primarily targeting the elderly. The purpose of this study is to investigate identified security risks related to the application through a literature study of previous scientific research, popular science articles and newspaper articles, as well as by combining semi-structured interviews and a survey aimed at users in the 60-80 age range, investigating whether respondents are aware existing security risks or have been exposed to fraud. Finally, we are determining whether the respondents feel that the positive aspects of using Mobilt BankID exceed possible security risks. The results we obtain show that there is no previous scientific research investigating security threats posed to the Swedish version of Mobilt BankID. A weak majority of our respondents are aware that certain security threats exist but almost none have been exposed to attacks or experienced any security-related problems. Most of the respondents seem to have a positive attitude towards the application finding it trustworthy and easy to use.

Abstract:
<p>The aim of my study is to look at two specific schools and their work with Internet in the classroom and compare their work to what experts say about how you should educate. The study focuses on how teachers guide the students to be critical to the information they encounter on the internet. What do the experts say? How should the teachers work with Internet in the classroom? What do the teachers say about their work with Internet? What do the teachers say regarding children and the Internet?  To answer these questions I have interviewed two teachers from different schools, which had classes with children 6 to 8 years old. The schools are very different from each other concerning investment on Internet devices in the classroom. I have also interviewed two experts on the subject who are working for organisations concerned with children’s use of the Internet.</p><p>I have related my findings to older research, Marc Prensky’s terms Digital Natives and Digital Immigrant are frequently used in the study. I found that the work with and understanding of Internet depended on what generation the teacher belonged to. Older teachers are Digital Immigrants while the younger teachers are Digital Natives who have been brought up with digital media. According to Prensky and other experts it’s important that teachers learn to communicate in the style of their students, and give Internet a place in the classroom. Children are spending much time on the Internet and it’s important, according to the experts, to guide the children and learn them to be critical to the information they come across.</p>

Johnson, Lauren Gayle. "Designing stories, bridging success : multimodal digital storytelling with at-risk immigrant and refugee students." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/50299.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis presents an ethnographic, qualitative case study on a digital storytelling project with “at-risk” senior-high aged immigrant and refugee students in a Surrey School District transition program. Most of the students were of refugee background, belonging to a subpopulation of English language learners possessing distinct academic and social needs due to limited formal education and trauma. The study addresses a gap in the research on digital storytelling with refugees by investigating the pedagogical potential of a multimodal project design through which students approach composition non-sequentially according to their individual interests and intents, employing cultural, linguistic, and meaning-making resources. Theoretical frameworks included the socio-cultural perspective of literacy, as well as the notions of multiliteracies and multimodality. Data were gathered through field notes, participant observation, informal conversations with students, semi-structured ethnographic interviews, and the collection of student artifacts and digital stories. I include in the findings both general observations, as well as detailed accounts of the composing process and digital stories of two students. Findings were determined through coding data according to modes of communication and common themes that emerged during analysis, and further organized using an adaptation of Gillian Rose’s visual methodology. This research demonstrates how a non-sequential, multimodal digital storytelling project promoted a democratic classroom environment in which all students felt capable of communicating their knowledge and identities, according to their strengths and interests. Also, students developed a conscious awareness and enhanced their repertoires of how to use and combine different modes to communicate meaning, thus revealing complex thinking and decision-making. The project furthermore extended possibilities for students to communicate complex and abstract aspects of their identities and social worlds, including difficult knowledge. Teachers gained greater insight into the students’ identities, and the students deepened their understanding of their own strengths and accomplishments.<br>Education, Faculty of<br>Language and Literacy Education (LLED), Department of<br>Graduate

Abstract:
The problem addressed in this study was the lack of a model for technology integration in social work education to meet the needs of graduate social workers in the field. Extant research has focused on the efficacy of online or blended learning, but not on social work educators' technology literacy. The purpose of this study was to explore social work educators' self efficacy related to technology use in curriculum and pedagogy. Digitally immigrant educators, defined as those over the age of 35, were studied since this group struggles in adjustment to technology, commonly used by younger students. The conceptual framework synthesized von Bertalanffy's general systems theory and Bandura's self-efficacy construct to understand the relationship between social work educators and technology. In this concurrent mixed methods and grounded theory study, participants (n = 396) provided quantitative responses about self-efficacy to the Computer Technology Integration Survey and answered additional questions about technology integration in the classroom. Findings from the correlational analysis revealed a model that connects positive self-efficacy to the number of digital tools used in the classroom, technology integration in pedagogy and curriculum, and teaching the concept of a 'digital divide.' Qualitative data from open-ended questions (n = 260) and 4 individual interviews were analyzed by thematic content analysis. Findings included issues that inhibit technology integration: personal motivation, time, and lack of institutional support. This study may contribute to positive social change by proposing a technology integration model for social work educators to use as an innovative strategy for preparing future professionals in the practice of social work.

Abstract:
The rise of digital technology has transformed nearly every part of our daily lives, including the way we learn and memorize. Such transformations raise interesting questions for one of the most long-standing and demanding memorization tasks in the world: the memorization of the Islamic holy book, The Qur’an. For Muslims, The Qur’an is a timeless, sacred text, cradling within its covers many profound images, stories, and parables. Despite rigorous research in the fields of game design and memorization techniques, very little work has been done in combining these two areas of research to create a game-based memorization experience of The Quran. This thesis synthesizes game design elements with existing memorization techniques to foster a more engaging, enriching, and inspiring Qur’an memorization experience.

Abstract:

Furthermore, the identity process has been put in relation to an integration process into theSwedish society. The theoretical framework in the study includes ‘the digital networksociety’, ‘diaspora’, ‘hybrid identities’ as well as ‘collective identities’. The empirics wascollected through qualitative phenomenological half structured interviews and were heldwith five participants, four men and one woman, from three different countries in the agesbetween 23-33 years old. The interviews were conducted in Malmö during March-April2017 and lasted between 30-60minutes. The results show that digital media foremost werebest used regarding identity negotiation towards the homeland. Through the digitalnetwork society, a continuous contact with the homeland were made possible through theuse of social medias. Furthermore, the digital diaspora brought forth a negotiation of oldidentities and a positioning in the Swedish context. Additionally, the digital tools madehybrid identities possible through the digital diaspora.

This essay is investigating what type of sources we trust, depending on how the information in these sources is created and provided. To exemplify, the sources Wikipedia and Nationalencyklopedin (the Swedish National Encyclopedia) were used, each one representing different approaches. The first is a representation of the collective intelligence, where anyone can contribute with their knowledge to the public – freedom under responsibility. The latter represents peer-reviewed knowledge, desirable enough to have people paying for it– true and unaffected.Based on theories of source criticism, collective intelligence, expertise and the different generations of digital natives and digital immigrants, two focus groups were conducted and analysed. A group of upper secondary school students and a group of retirees were presented with encoded texts from both encyclopedias, which they analysed critically from their opinion on reliability and objectivity. Their reasoning shows a well demonstrated awareness of the need of a critical reasoning and information literacy when dealing with different sources. But the question remained, particularly in regards to the students, if they do after all practice these skills in their information retrieval.<br>Program: Bibliotekarie

Purpose/Aim: Our purpose with this study is to examen the differences in communication between digital immigrants and digital natives, how the digitization has changed our way to communicate in an interpersonal matter. Main Results: Through our study we have concluded that barriers do exist between students (natives) and teachers (immigrants), but not to the extent we first predicted. The digitization has resulted in a change in the way we communicate and our relation to each other. But in a purely communicative matter, the digitization hasn’t made it harder for natives and immigrants to understand each other, but it has contributed to new vocabulary and the use of the language. New codes has been developed, but thanks to the younger generations ability to adapt to change - this linguistic difference it is not a problem for the understanding of the code used by the immigrants. Through our study, we discovered, however, an unwillingness or fear of the immigrants to adapt to the younger code, and adapt to the technological change. Abstract:
碩士<br>國立臺灣師範大學<br>圖書資訊學研究所<br>107<br>In the digital environment, digital technology changes people's daily lives and information acquisition methods. The purpose of this study is to explore the characteristics and differences of information behavior in different generations. In other words, I would like to know the information behavior and interaction of several native and digital immigrants in different generations, especially the information behavior of several native and digital immigrants in the work/course situation and daily life situation. Do research questions include what information needs are generated in the journey of information seeking? What methods are used to seek information? How to choose the right information? Will you share the information further? In addition to exploring the information behavior of different generations, it also explores the characteristics of intergenerational communication in information and emotions. In this study, qualitative semi-structured interviews were used to interview 10-digit native and 10-digit immigrants by snowball sampling, and the V&R map proposed by White et al. was used to describe the information resources of respondents. Based on grounded theory, this study encodes the collected interview data. The results of the study found that (1) the information behavior of several native and digital immigrants in work/study: (A) information needs are related to occupations, and (B) digital immigrants mainly seek channels to find engines and contacts. Digital natives will also use search engines, books, and other online resources, and (C) several digital natives and digital immigrants will judge the basis based on the information authority, content and relevant personnel. Digital natives will also observe the repetitiveness of information and online reviews, and (D) Information sharing is related to the purpose of information use.
