Zhao, Jianxin. "Making Digital Libraries Flexible, Scalable and Reliable: Reengineering the MARIAN System in JAVA." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 1999. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/78146.

Full text
Abstract:
There is a great need for digital libraries that are flexible, scalable, and reliable. Few such systems exist. Little is known about how to build them. This thesis addresses these problems by enhancing a prototype digital library system with the aim of making it more flexible, scalable, and reliable. We hypothesize that: 1) adding a new (user information) layer and maintaining weak coupling in the design of a digital library system can help achieve system flexibility; 2) optimizing network connection usage and facilitating distribution of computation and disk operations in system design can help achieve system scalability; and 3) applying good software processes can help university students produce a very reliable system. Approaches based on the above hypothesis were used in the project of Reengineering the MARIAN System in Java. The results of the project and experiments verified the correctness of the hypothesis. The results of this thesis may help inform future digital library design and implementation projects to produce flexible, scalable, and reliable systems.<br>Master of Science

Mahadevan, Shankar. "A Learning Object Model For Electronic Learning." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2002. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/34060.

Full text
Abstract:
Digital libraries are fast expanding into the role of independent educational entities that aspire not only to complementing traditional classroom teaching, but also allow open electronic learning for distance and continued education. These multifaceted roles can be realized only if the course content and the related content management system are versatile enough to be captured into any individual's learning needs. Many studies have defined a concept of "learning object" to address the issues and needs. But in attempting to solve the problem, the definitions have emphasized some aspects of the digital library while leaving the other issues to be solved later. Thus, the whole system dynamics is either weak or too cumbersome to navigate. As a part of this masters work, firstly the current model of pedagogical endowment was investigated. In order to accommodate the digital nature of education, a new modern profile of learning is proposed that allows modular yet efficient transfer of knowledge from the teacher to the pupil. The thesis then proposes a comprehensive learning object (LO) model, along with the associated system model, that will allow complete and flexible integration of content into the modern digital library profile. The process will be user-centric (both for knowledge developers and learners) as well as metadata-centric. It is scalable and interoperable with legacy and existing content databases and display systems. This thesis covers how the LO model is integrated into the core of the library's content development, discovery, and delivery process. The results of the experiment in terms of ease-of-use, flow-control, and feasibility of the model are documented. A beta-version of these concepts has been successfully tested with volunteers and implemented as a part of the Digital Library Network for Engineering and Technology (DLNET) project.<br>Master of Science

Abstract:
Public libraries are evolving from their traditional role as promoters of literacy to a new role as providers of community resources, including after-school activities for teenagers. A policy mandate for such activities appears to be lacking though, which might impact negatively their effectiveness. The purpose of this study was to get a better understanding of the existing policy and implementation mechanisms of after-school activities offered by the Atlanta Fulton Library System in Georgia to at-risk teenaged patrons. Moore's theory of innovation and public value provided the theoretical framework for the study. An embedded case study research design was used to explore the perceived role of the public library, guiding policy framework, and factors constraining the implementation of after-school activities in 3 of the system 20 branches serving at-risk youth; semi-structured interviews with 21 participants comprising teenagers engaged in after-school activities, parents, librarians, library managers, and members of the Friends of the library; observations of teenagers' behaviors in the library setting; and publicly available document on the subject. The data were inductively coded and then subjected to a content analytical procedure, which revealed 5 after-school themes: bridging a digital divide, teen and community needs, public policy, and public service. The key finding of this study indicates an absence of a system-wide formal policy in how after-school services are provided across library branches for at-risk teenagers. The study concludes with recommendations to reexamine the existing after-school programs in a way that better incorporates the unique needs of library patrons and to align policies with these needs in order to better serve at-risk youth within the context of their communities.

Abstract:
This book examines the changing roles of the librarian and how working within a rich digital environment has impacted on the ability of professionals to develop the appropriate 'know how', skills, knowledge and behaviours required in order to operate effectively. Expert specialists and opinion-makers from around the world discuss the challenges and successes of adapting existing practices, introducing new services and working with new partners in an environment that no longer recognizes traditional boundaries and demarcation of roles. The book is structured thematically, with a focus on three key strands where the impact of digital technologies is significant. The first strand, Rethinking Marketing and Communication, looks at strategic approaches and practices which harness social media and illustrate the importance of communication and marketing activities in these new online spaces. The second strand, Rethinking Support for Academic Practice, examines the professional expertise required of librarians who engage with and support new academic and learner practices in digitally rich teaching, learning and research environments. The third strand, Rethinking Resource Delivery, investigates the use of strategies to maximize access to online resources and services: harnessing system data to enhance collection management and user choice, designing and managing mobile 'friendly' learning spaces and providing virtual resources and services to an overseas campus. This timely and inspiring edited collection should make vital reading for librarians, library schools, departments of information science and other professional groups such as education developers, learning technologists and IT specialists.

Abstract:
Abstract A new software system has been developed to allow a plan to be created for the inspection tasks associated with the coating processes for a steel structure. This system uses a coatings library to create the coating systems that are to be applied to various user-defined zones of the structure. These zones are identified on a schematic drawing of the structure and then the coating systems and inspection regimes that are required can be associated with these zones. Inspection tasks are then planned and scheduled using a register of inspectors and the outcomes of the inspection tasks are recorded electronically so that the data to compile final report on the coating processes is collected in a managed way. This paper describes the structure of the software and illustrates how inspection data is transferred electronically to the system using both wireless gauge technology and visual comparison systems. Examples of actual inspection tasks will be presented to illustrate how the system is used.

Abstract:
The presentation is an overview of the Mikes Kelemen Program - running since 2013 under the auspices of various public entities including the National Széchényi Library - in terms of its processes, results and future potential. Since its launch the Program has processed and offered into public use 250,000 documents collected from eight countries on four continents. The 90,000 documents so far placed offer us insight into the document needs of the domestic library system and those of Hungarian minorities abroad. After two years of development the initial HTML-based service interface listing the documents on offer was replaced by a new SQL database-based one in 2020. The implementation was driven by knowledge gained in the first years of the Program, including document processing experience, utilization statistics for the documents on offer, and feedback from partner institutions that joined the Program. The operation of the new database-based interface implements the management of duplicates exchange differently from the Hungarian practice. The Mikes Kelemen Program website is characterized by serviceoriented operation and integrated processing and recommendation process management. The operation enables accurate, reliable, automated and trackable document management, which may provide a blueprint for the overhaul of the national duplicates exchange system, replacing “digital paper-based” records such as Excel or Word.
