Nursing has an important role in Clinical Analyses Laboratories, especially in the pre- analytical phase. Nurses and their staff are responsible for implementing the technical procedures and they should take care of the laboratory exams before and after they are collected. In the curriculum of nursing graduation course, nurses must have a general, humane, critical and reflective requirement. They should become a qualified professional, for the practice of nursing based on scientific, intellectual and they should be guided by ethical principles. To ensure this nurse profile, the educational institutions structure their teaching on generic programs, hindering market entry by newcomers in specific fields of nursing. This fact demonstrates the difficulties found in the hiring of nurses in the area of clinical analyzes. For this reason, the aim of this study is to evaluate an "e-learning" nursing course in clinical analysis for nurses. This course is to fill the gap mentioned before and to provide the professionals, expertise in this field. The methodology is characterized by a technological production. It creates a product and/or service that dedicate itself to the training and expertise of professional nurses in clinical analysis. The course was built and run using the Moodle Learning Management System (Modular Object-Oriented Dynamic Learning Environment). The course has a workload of 60 hours, divided into 10 modules, and the modules are sequential and complementary. Twelve judges with expertise in education, clinical analysis and information technology evaluated the course. It was based on three pillars: pedagogical, technological and communication. The experts as satisfactory assessed the course, 16 out of 22 items were evaluated and had an average above the level of agreement of 70 %, which suggested improvement of opportunities for the nurses. We conclude that this specialization course will enable the growth of professional nurses through a dynamic and collaborative learning process, providing a reflective know -how, with the use of different technological tools.

This thesis introduces digital materials by analogy with digital computation and digital communications. Traditional fabrication techniques include pick-and-place, roll-to-roll, molding, patterning and more. Current research in fabrication includes algorithmic assembly [3], programmed assembly[9], self-assembly[1,2], assembly by folding [4] as well as guided self-assembly [2]. While these research areas are studying means of fabrication, here we introduce the study of the digital materials they assemble. Moreover we present a new type of three-dimensional digital printer for use with functional digital materials. Most importantly, the digital materials are shown to be tuneable; the code describing a digital material allows one to predict and adjust the properties of the material itself. In the same 'way digital communications and computation are discrete in the code space, digital fabrication is discrete in the physical space. Just as digital communications enabled cheap long-distance communications and digital computation enabled cheap, universal and efficient computers, digital fabrication enables cheap, efficient and universal fabrication. Building digitally will reduce the complexity of the assembler and can produce a wider variety of objects for a smaller cost.

Digital materials are constructions assembled from a small number of types of discrete building blocks; they represent a new way of building functional, multi-material, three-dimensional structures. In this thesis, I focus on the construction of microelectronics from vertically assemble-able two-dimensional parts. With just a conducting and insulating part-type, I show that it is possible to make discretely assembled electrical networks. With a third resistive part-type, I show that it is possible to make any passive electronic component and complex impedance circuitry, including antennas and matching networks. Finally, with four semiconducting part-types I suggest that it is possible to assemble active components like diodes and transistors. This work details the part production processes to create two-dimensional micro-bricks, modeling and assembly strategies to create functional structures from discrete parts, the measurement and evaluation of the bulk properties of the assemblies, and experiments in assembly automation.

In this fictional situation we analyzed a European public procurement procedure in the digital services industry developed by the European Insurance and Occupational Pensions Authority (EIOPA) for the creation of a Central Repository (CR) for pension funds undertakings reporting as a first step for the Pan-European Personal Pension Product (PEPP) implementation. Since the selection process of the most suitable supplier, the challenges that arise from this business partnership are analyzed through the Agency theory scope. Additionally, we identified risk behaviors that explain the different reactions towards risk in this bilateral relationship, and proposed risk management approaches to mitigate such risk behaviors. Moreover, we observed that EIOPA's political and financial background (EC revision of EIOPA's mandate and the hypothesis of a near Brexit) explain the level of dependency on public procurement procedures for digital services, and the existence of possible breaches on public procurement Directive 2014/24/EU regarding Articles 67 and 72 may allow potential moral hazard situations.

This thesis develops the use of additive assembly of press-fit digital materials as a new rapid-prototyping process. Digital materials consist of a finite set of parts that have discrete connections and occupy discrete space. Part geometries were designed and fabricated at different scales from different materials, including hierarchical voxels which connect across different scales. All parts were designed to be vertically assembled with top and bottom connections. Digital materials are discussed as a new way for building physically reconfigurable, multi-material 3D structures. The parts were designed with press-fit connectors to build reversible assemblies to take full advantage of reuse and recycling. This document starts by describing some current technologies in the fields of rapid-prototyping and personal fabrication. The concept for a press-fit digital materials is defined and explained. Many part designs are documented, including conductor and insulator parts for SOIC-pitch 3D circuits and hierarchical assemblies. This thesis concludes with the design and concept for assembly machine to automate building functional digital materials.

Abstract:
In this thesis, media convergence strategies and added value of digital news services are investigated, focusing on the newspaper industry and it’s audience. Convergence implies that previously unalike areas come together, approaching a common goal. A subordinate concept of convergence, i.e., media convergence, is a concept that has become common when denoting a range of processes within the production of media content, its distribution and consumption. Newspapers are one of many so-called publishing channels that provide information and entertainment. They have traditionally been printed on paper, but today’s digital technology makes it possible to provide newspapers through a number of different channels. The current strategy used by newspaper companies involves a process of convergence mainly regarding multiple publishing. A newspaper company interested in publishing content through multiple channels has to adapt its production workflow to produce content not only for the traditional printed edition, but also for the other channels. In this thesis, a generalized value chain involving four main stages illustrates the production workflow at a newspaper company in relation to the convergence processes. The four stages are creation, packaging, distribution and consumption of content. One of the aims of this thesis is to assess how the views and strategies of newspaper companies concerning media convergence correspond with the opinions and views concerning convergence of their audience. In order to discuss this, seven types of media convergence are suggested. Furthermore, the thesis explores how the newspaper industry is relating to the processes of convergence, using two examples: newspaper companies’ ventures into the use of moving images, and the newspaper companies’ strategies for a future epaper edition. Among the findings of this thesis are that digital news services can add value to a newspaper company, however that the digital news services investigated, in their current form, are not sophisticated enough to give added value as perceived by the audience. The findings of the thesis are based on studies of the newspaper industry in Sweden and reflect specific newspaper companies, their strategies, production workflow and ventures from 2002 to 2007. The methods used have mainly been case studies and surveys.

Digital materials are comprised of a small number of types of discrete physical building blocks, which assemble to form constructions that meet the versatility and scalability of digital computation and communication systems. This work seeks to demonstrate the applicability of a digital material approach in designing new cellular materials and methods for assembly of structures with static reconfigurability. The science of cellular solids has enabled the widespread use of lightweight materials to meet important engineering needs, such as passive energy absorption, but they are not in widespread use for structural applications, perhaps due to a large gap between the strength and stiffness to weight ratios of popular classical solids, and the performance of known lightweight cellular materials that are produced from the same constituent material. The engineering of fiber reinforced composite materials has enabled structures with large reductions in weight for given strength and stiffness targets, but at very high design and processing costs, and many challenges producing mechanical interfaces (joints). Digital materials promise scalable methods of producing functional things with reconfigurable sets of discrete and compatible parts, but the presence of many reversible connections raises questions about the performance of the end result. Digital Cellular Solids are cellular solids that exhibit improvements in relative stiffness and strength compared to relative density, over current practices for producing lightweight materials. This is accomplished by assembling lattice geometries that perform better than any that we know how to make with traditional methods. When implemented with fiber composites, the result is not only stiffer and stronger than any previously known ultra-light material, but it presents a new scalable and flexible workflow for applying fiber composites to engineering problems.

Abstract:
With the enormous amount of information being created digitally or converted to digital formats and made available through Digital Libraries (DLs), there is a strong demand for building tailored DL services to attend the preferences and needs of diverse targeted communities. However, construction and adaptation of such services takes significant effort when not assisted by methodologies, tools, and environments that support the complete life cycle of DL development, including requirements gathering, conceptual modeling, rapid prototyping, and code generation/reuse. With current systems, these activities are only partially supported, generally in an uncorrelated way that may lead to inconsistencies and incompleteness. Moreover, such existing approaches are not buttressed by comprehensive and formal foundations and theories. To address these issues we describe the development, implementation, and deployment of a new generic digital library generator yielding implementations of digital library services from models of DL â societiesâ and â scenariosâ . The distinct aspects of our solution are: 1) an approach based on a formal, theoretical framework; 2) use of state-of-the-art database and software engineering techniques such as domain-specific declarative languages, scenario-synthesis, and componentized and model-driven architectures; 3) analysis centered on scenario-based design and DL societal relationships; 4) automatic transformations and mappings from scenarios to workflow designs and from these to Java implementations; and 5) special attention paid to issues of simplicity of implementation, modularity, reusability, and extensibility. We demonstrate the feasibility of the approach through a number of examples.

This report, commissioned by DLF, provides an overview of a diverse set of more than thirty digital library aggregation services, organizes them into functional clusters, and then evaluates them more fully from the perspective of an informed user. Most of the services under review rely wholly or partially on the Protocol for Metadata Harvesting of the Open Archives Initiative (OAI-PMH). Each service is annotated with its organizational affiliation, subject coverage, function, audience, status, and size. Critical issues surrounding each of these elements are presented in order to provide the reader with an appreciation of the nuances inherent in seemingly straightforward factual information, such as "audience" or "size." Each service is then grouped into one of five functional clusters: open access e-print archives and servers; cross-archive search services and aggregators; from digital collections to digital library environments; from peer-reviewed "referratories" to portal services; specialized search engines. This publication was deposited with permission of the publisher (Digital Library Federation Council on Library and Information Resources Washington, DC.).

Abstract:
People like to consume multimedia content on mobile devices. Mobile networks can deliver mobile TV services but they require large infrastructural investments and their operators need to make trade-offs to design worthwhile experiences. The approximation of how users experience networked services has shifted from the inadequate packet level Quality of Service (QoS) to the user perceived Quality of Experience (QoE) that includes content, user context and their expectations. However, QoE is lacking concrete operationalizations for the visual experience of content on small, sub-TV resolution screens displaying transcoded TV content at low bitrates. The contribution of my thesis includes both substantive and methodological results on which factors contribute to the QoE in mobile multimedia services and how. I utilised a mix of methods in both lab and field settings to assess the visual experience of multimedia content on mobile devices. This included qualitative elicitation techniques such as 14 focus groups and 75 hours of debrief interviews in six experimental studies. 343 participants watched 140 hours of realistic TV content and provided feedback through quantitative measures such as acceptability, preferences and eye-tracking. My substantive findings on the effects of size, resolution, text quality and shot types can improve multimedia models. My substantive findings show that people want to watch mobile TV at a relative size (at least 4cm of screen height) similar to living room TV setups. In order to achieve these sizes at 35cm viewing distance users require at least QCIF resolution and are willing to scale it to a much lower angular resolution (12ppd) then what video quality research has found to be the best visual quality (35ppd). My methodological findings suggest that future multimedia QoE research should use a mixed methods approach including qualitative feedback and viewing ratios akin to living room setups to meet QoE’s ambitious scope.

Abstract:
The development of information and communication technologies, and wide spread of the Internet and its associated technologies have brought about tremendous changes in the reference department of academic libraries, and in the attitudes and expectations of both information professionals and users. Many academic libraries across the globe have embraced Web technologies to fulfil users reference needs in a digital environment. This study aimed to investigate and analyse digital reference services (DRS) in university libraries in Pakistan. It focused on the nature and level of DRS, technologies used for the provision of the service, usage, staffing, marketing, funding, ICT infrastructure available for the service, and looked at the issues faced by academic libraries in implementing and managing the service. A mixed methods research approach combining both quantitative and qualitative methods was employed to achieve the aim and objectives of the study. The quantitative data for the study were collected through an online survey. A total of eighty five university libraries (both in public and private sectors) from all the four provinces, the federal capital and Azad Jammu & Kashmir participated in the survey. The quantitative data were supplemented by the qualitative data which were gathered through semi-structured interviews with the heads of fifteen leading university libraries. Findings suggest that DRS is at an early development stage in university libraries in Pakistan, with a small number of libraries offering the service. Most of the academic libraries which have implemented this cutting-edge service, are large libraries equipped with good human and technological resources. The libraries have mostly developed asynchronous digital reference systems by employing e-mail and web forms. The usage of the service is lower than that of in-person reference in academic libraries due to factors, such as libraries failure to effectively market the service, lack of ICT skills among users, lack of ICT facilities available for users. It was found that the libraries lack skilled and competent LIS professionals to staff the service. Factors contributing to the scarcity of skilled human resources in academic libraries include the lack of in-house training for DRS, shortage of continuing professional development courses in the country, and deficiencies in LIS curricula offered by the country s library schools. A number of issues which affect the implementation and management of DRS in academic libraries have been identified. They include: scarcity of competent human resources; access to appropriate digital resources; unavailability of suitable software for DRS; financial constraints; lack of ICT facilities; absence of a digital reference policy; lack of ICT application; paucity of resources; electricity supply; inadequate physical facilities; lack of local research and literature on DRS.

Digital fabrication aims to bring the programmability of the digital world into the physical world and has the potential to radically transform the way we make things. We are are developing a novel digital fabrication technique where a small basis set of discrete part types, called "digital materials", are reversibly joined into large assemblies with embedded functionality. Objects constructed this way may be programmed with exotic functional behavior based on the composition of their constituent parts. In this thesis I build an end-to end computer-aided design (CAD), simulation, and manufacturing (CAM) pipeline for digital materials that respects the discretization of the parts in its underlying software representation. I propagate the same abstract geometric "cell" representation of parts from the design workflow into simulation and path planning. I develop a dynamic model for simulating anisotropic, multimaterial assemblies of cells with embedded mechanical and electronic functionality based on local interactions. I demonstrate the similarities between my mechanical model and the Timoshenko Beam Element. I note an advantage of my model for simulating flexural joints is its non-linear treatment of angular displacements - allowing for large angular deformations to be simulated without costly remeshing. I implement this model in software and demonstrate its potential for parallelization by calculating each cell-cell interaction in a separate core of the GPU. I compare my simulation results with a professional multiphysics software package. I demonstrate that my tool facilitates rapid exploration of the design space around functional digital materials with several examples.

Abstract:
Thesis (MEng)--Stellenbosch University, 2015.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The fracture of ductile materials is currently regarded as a complex and challenging phenomenon to characterise and predict. Recently, a bond-based, non-local theory was formulated called the peridynamic theory, which is able to directly solve solid mechanics problems that include fracture. The failure criterion is governed by a critical stretch relation between bonds. It was found in literature that the critical stretch relates to the popular fracture mechanics parameter called the critical energy release rate for predicting brittle linear-elastic failure. It was also proposed that the non-linear critical energy release rate or J-integral can be used to model ductile failure using peridynamics. The aim of this thesis was to investigate the validity of using the J-integral to determine the critical stretch for predicting ductile failure. Standard ASTM fracture mechanics tests on Compact Tension specimens of Polymethyl methacrylate, stainless steel 304L and aluminium 1200H4 were performed to determine the critical energy release rates and non-linear Resistance-curves. Furthermore, a novel peridynamic-based algorithm was developed that implements a critical energy release rate based failure criterion and Digital Image Correlation (DIC) measured full surface displacement fields of cracked materials. The algorithm is capable of estimating and mapping both the peridynamic damage caused by brittle cracking and damage caused by plastic deformation. This approach was used to validate the use of an energy release rate based failure criterion for predicting linear-elastic brittle failure using peridynamics. Also, it showed a good correlation among the test results for detecting plastic damage in the alloys when incorporating the respective J-integral derived critical stretch values. Additionally, Modified Arcan tests were performed to obtain Mode I, Mode II and mixed Mode fracture load results of brittle materials. Mode I peridynamic models compared closely to test results when using the Mode I critical energy release rate, derived critical stretch and served as validation for the approach. Moreover, it was argued that Mode I failure criteria cannot in principle be used to model shear failure. Therefore, it was proposed to rather use the appropriate Mode II and mixed Mode critical energy release rates to predict the respective failures in peridynamics. Also, for predicting ductile failure loads it was found that using a threshold energy release rate derived from the R-curve yielded considerably more accurate failure load results compared to the usage of the critical energy release rate, i.e. J-integral. In this thesis it was shown that there exists great potential for detecting and characterising cracking and failure by using a peridynamic-based approach through coupling DIC full displacement field measurements and the critical energy release rate of a particular structural material.
Verder was 'n nuwe peridinamies-gebaseerde algoritme ontwikkel.

Abstract:
Computer prints have long been viewed as final products. All the work was traditionally completed on the computer then printed as final output, without alteration or adaptation. Unlike other forms of fine arts printing (photo or printmaking) there are no chemical alterations or multiple printing procedures. I have used this exploration to experiment with numerous approaches to digital printing. Several artists have inspired my work, both in approach and technique. Those artists include Robert Rauschenberg, David Hockney, and Man Ray. This creative project is both an experiment in creative printing techniques and the aesthetic creation of experimental works of digital art.The purpose of this project is to explore and experiment with techniques and practices that will push my own digital work to new levels, and open areas of further study for myself and other digital artists.

Abstract:
Buy Now Pay Later (BNPL) is a financial service whereby customers defer payment on a purchase against a short-term debt. While BNPL services have a long history, digital invoice services are now the largest market for BNPL. For the study, two of the largest providers in Sweden, and their checkout interfaces were reviewed for dark patterns. Dark patterns are instances where designers exploit the knowledge of human behaviour (e.g., behavioural psychology) and cognition (e.g., cognitive psychology) in order to coerce the customers into performing target actions. For digital invoice services, the target actions are for the customers to select the credit instalments which profits their business model, as a large percentage of their income are from postponed payments. This study employs three research methods to answer the research questions “What existing dark patterns are identified in digital invoice services, and what are the impacts of dark patterns in the context of digital invoice services?”. First, existing dark patterns were identified through a systematic literature review. Second, the resulting dark patterns were applied to an analysis of the two digital invoice services, where ten dark patterns were identified. Finally, an interface of a digital invoice service was designed, prototyped, and evaluated to test the impact of the identified dark patterns in the context of digital invoice services. Analysis suggests that the users are being coerced through design into the target actions, which were selecting the credit instalments (X2 = 5.84, df=1). The results is being further discussed in means of the potential debt users face from dark patterns in financial interfaces.

Whitley, John Nicholas. "The quality of data services over digital broadcast radio." Thesis, Loughborough University, 2008. https://dspace.lboro.ac.uk/2134/35349.

Full text
Abstract:
There are a number of competing digital broadcast radio standards in existence today. These were primarily developed to provide a number of either audio only, or audio-visual services across a substantial geographical area. Since their conception, all of the digital broadcast standards have been able to transmit other kinds of data, known as data services, alongside audio and audio-visual data. The ability of audio and video codecs to cope with reception affected by error tends to be much higher than other kinds of digital data. As these standards were primarily developed to be carriers of audio or audio-visual data, the error protection for all of the digital broadcast radio standards was designed to be suitable for the contemporary audio-visual codec; typically the worst expected Bit Error Rate (BER), after the error protection, is 10-4. This protection is not strong enough for data that is intolerant of error. This research analyses and compares the performance of data services sent on Digital Audio Broadcast (DAB) and Digital Video Broadcast–Hand-held (DVB–h) channels.

Abstract:
The main scientific problems investigated in this work deal with the creation of flexible open source e-Learning content and services system (referred here as Digital Library of Educational resources and services – DLE) providing learning customisation possibilities for its users. Standards and interoperability are key factors in the success of the introduction of such kind of DLEs, and therefore the main research object of the work is investigation and proposal of interoperability guidelines for DLE components. The main problem is not the identification of suitable standards and specifications, but the adoption of these standards and specifications and their application in e-Learning practice. Approaches concerning LOM Standard Application Profiles (APs) and curricula mapping are the main topics created and investigated here because they could provide more quick and convenient LOs search possibilities in the repositories for the users. Another key factor is quality of DLE systems, and therefore one more research object of the work is the effectiveness of methods of DLE components evaluation. DLE components’ complex evaluation tools suitable for systems based on flexible approach have been created. These tools should include a number of criteria to evaluate LOs reusability level and VLEs adaptation capabilities. Practice of flexible DLE software creation and development for Lithuanian primary, secondary and vocational education based of flexible approach is presented in more... [to full text]

Abstract:
Launching of digital reference services by academic libraries is on the increase. Libraries are exploring new ways of expanding their services by interacting with users and responding to user inquiries via the Internet, especially students enrolled on the distance mode of studying. The purpose of this study was to evaluate digital reference services at the Polytechnic of Namibia library and the University of Namibia library. Two aspects were evaluated, namely, ‘Resources’ and ‘elements of the general digital reference model’. This study was a summative evaluation study in which semi-structured interviews and observations were used to collect data. The research findings showed that these libraries used the general digital reference model in providing responses to the library users. The study established that the two libraries did not follow the IFLA and RUSA standards of staffing and training of librarians working with digital reference services. The study further found that a lack of ability to fully demonstrate to users how to access various library services was one of the major problems that the librarians experienced.

SPRINGER, JULIAN, and MIKO KINNUNEN. "Value creation through digital services in start-up support organisations." Thesis, KTH, Industriell Management, 2018. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:kth:diva-239721.

Full text
Abstract:
Background and purpose - Digitisation is connecting various business actors to create interconnected ecosystems through digital platforms. Meanwhile entrepreneurial ecosystems are offering various benefits for start-ups e.g. through support organisations that offer services for them. Currently, these start-up support organisations face the challenge of leveraging digital services to create value for their member start-ups. The purpose of this study is to investigate how the digital services offered in start-up support organisations create value for start-ups. Approach - From a theoretical perspective, the sociology of value and service dominant logic concepts such as value co-creation and service ecosystems are considered. Qualitative methods were used to conduct a pre-study and an in-depth case study with a start-up hub in Stockholm's entrepreneurial ecosystem. Data was collected using 18 semi-structured interviews with start-ups and other actors in the ecosystem and participant observations of 17 events. Findings - Needs and challenges for start-ups were identified and mapped against the digital services used by the start-ups. These services facilitate interaction between various actors in the start-up hub. Seven interconnected value types for the start-ups were identified emerging from the use of digital and non-digital services in the start-up hub. Moreover, many of the digital services are not provided by the start-up hub alone but in collaboration with other actors, connecting the start-up hub to other actors in the start-up ecosystem. Research limitations and implications - The findings contribute to the understanding of how start-up support organisations leverage digital services to support their member start-ups. The connection of digital service usage to the creation of various value types provides a theoretical concept to research about service ecosystem. As the study has been conducted with a limited number of respondents and events in Stockholm, further research in other ecosystems and using different methods is suggested to ensure generalisability of the findings of this study. Practical implications - A number of practical suggestions for start-up support organisations can be derived from the findings, including that start-up support organisations can benefit from establishing and moderating a digital community, involving several actors from the ecosystem and continuously adapting digital services to the changing environment and needs of start-ups. Originality - To the best knowledge of the authors, this is the first study to investigate digital services in entrepreneurial ecosystems from the perspective of value in service ecosystems.

Abstract:

Digital clay is a virtual material that exists currently in many 3D design software applications. Coupled with the rapid development of 3D printing technology, clay forms designed with a computer can now be externalized into the physical world as 3D prints or, vice versa, as digital scans. Recently, advanced tools have become available to artists and designers as affordable systems marketed to the professional consumer. As a response to these developments, my research examines the learning that occurs for eight artists who have been asked to play with physical and digital clay. This research employs a multiple case study methodology to understand the challenges of learning to work with digital clay and the supporting role of physical material engagement in this process. By interviewing participants and thematically analyzing their responses, I presented the subjective experience of the artists through portraiture showcasing the educational role play assumes when engaging across physical and digital media. Findings of the study suggest that engaging physical and digital materials calls upon a broad scope of cognitive processes including recollection and mental wanderings that contributed to reflection and discovery of novel ideas. Details from unstructured interviews were presented through narrative reporting as this research also strives to make sense of the participants' experience and situate the details of the study’s context.

The primary objective and functions of libraries have not changed due to computerization. Only, the tools and techniques to achieve these objectives with ease and accuracy have. In the present day the focus is on Electronic Information. Thus it is not only acquiring, sources of information but providing access to information and sharing also. With the Internet, WWW and Information explosion, identification and extraction of information resources is an essential function of all libraries and information centers. The Electronic information sources are rapidly growing and with a wide variety in form and content it takes a lot of time to get the required information. There is thus a need to organize and classify this wide spectrum of information. With this as background, the author has created a web page providing information to not only the internal sources at the Central Library, I.I.T Bombay but also links to external electronic information sources in the field Materials Science.

Abstract:

In the last years digital home solutions have made their entry and are are now becoming mainstream. From a service provider's point of view, this creates an interesting opportunity. Today, if a service provider wishes to change the services offered, the flash memory of the customers' Set-Top Boxes must be updated or the Set-Top Boxes must perhaps be replaced for larger updates. Replacing the Set-Top Box is both costly and time consuming. As digital home solutions become more normal, it is possible to use such a system to offer services. This way adding, removing or updating a service can be done in software only. Our proposed architecture does this, and with minimal involvment of the customers. The architecture offers a generic interface, providing for third party development. As the world gets more and more digitalized, the expectation of everything to be availabe from everywere gets more common. Our architecture lets a service provider offer their customers remote access to, and control of, their digital home. We have based our system on Microsoft Media Center Edition. This was chosen after first studying the concept of an ideal digital home and then researching which existing digital home solution would bring us closest to this ideal situation.

Abstract:
The role played by electronic commerce has increased in recent years and continues to increase. Due to this increase in the buying and selling of digital goods and services, revenue authorities have had to recognise that the existing taxation laws do not adequately tax the digital economy. The goal of this research was to establish how South Africa could amend its fiscal legislation in order to adequately tax the digital economy. The Organisation for Economic Co-Operation and Development (OECD) has been the leader in addressing the challenges posed by the digital economy. The thesis therefore focused on the recommendations by the OECD on how to tax the digital economy and relevant recommendations for South were adopted in this thesis, based on the work of the OECD. The main focus of these recommendations was on implementing the International VAT/GST Guidelines that were drafted by the OECD. The thesis also focused on the progress made by New Zealand with regard to taxing of the digital economy. New Zealand has a similar taxation system to South Africa so that the progress made there was relevant in the South African context. Recommendations were also made, based on the proposals by the New Zealand revenue authority that South Africa could adopt in taxing the digital economy. The main focus of these recommendations was lowering the Value-Added Tax (VAT) registration threshold for non-resident suppliers of electronic services and enacting legislation to provide for registration of an electronic marketplace for VAT purposes, instead of an individual supplier.

Mbama, Cajetan. "Digital banking services, customer experience and financial performance in UK banks." Thesis, Sheffield Hallam University, 2018. http://shura.shu.ac.uk/23305/.

Full text
Abstract:
Digital banking through telephone, internet and mobile is becoming important for banks’ service marketing, especially with the increase in digital device usage and customer demand for financial services. The changing dynamics of banking means that banks’ performance is no longer solely dependent on branch sales. Capturing and retaining customers are vital for banks, and digital banking is becoming the tool of choice; however research on how it affects customer experience and UK banks’ performance is still limited. This thesis focusses on determining the impact of digital banking services on customer experience and financial performance. The research in the thesis uses a mixed methods approach, utilising bank financial reports, interviews and questionnaires to achieve important results and contribute to knowledge in practice, and in related services, marketing and e-commerce theories. The research adopted Regression, Structural Equation Modelling and Chi-Square analyses in quantitative research, while using Content Analysis in qualitative research. The research takes a broad approach in the investigation of digital banking, customer experience and bank financial performance. It has used qualitative and quantitative analysis techniques to produce, test and triangulate results to increase robustness. The research demonstrates how digital banking enhances banks’ profitability. It found that attributes such as perceived value, convenience, functional quality, service quality and digital banking innovation are important in improving customer experience, satisfaction and loyalty, and banks’ financial performance. The insights from the three research perspectives have been integrated to develop a new Digital Banking Services, Customer Experience and Financial Performance Enhancement Framework (DiBCEFPEF). The results from the thesis have the potential to assist banks in the provision of services, and improve customer experience and financial performance, such as profitable growth and economic value-adds, through digital banking.

Abstract:
Water is an essential part of human life. According to the sustainable development goal (SDG), monitoring water quality is a fundamental goal of the international community. Therefore, there has been research on how the quality of water can be monitored and improved.  Data related to water quality can provide service opportunities such as to inform if the water is suitable for drinking by monitoring the quality of water resources. However, there has been limited research exploring opportunities and challenges of digital water quality monitoring services to fulfill requirements in rural areas, such as clean and safe water for drinking. Some challenges can be due to the geographical location of the area or avoiding certain regions for implementing a service due to political agenda or infrastructure, especially in less developed countries or areas. The lack of exploration of opportunities points to the need to further investigate service opportunities like to inform if the water is suitable for drinking in rural areas. It is crucial to monitor water quality and offer services because bad water quality can lead to health issues or poor yield in agriculture, some of the few consequences. Therefore, in my paper, using the Design Science Research (DSR) approach, I have explored various opportunities and challenges of digital water quality monitoring services in Indian rural areas. The result demonstrates opportunities related to the exploration of digital water quality monitoring services in rural areas and the challenges that need to be overcome in order to realize the opportunities. This overview can inform researchers, designers, and stakeholders to understand new service opportunities and challenges of digital water quality monitoring services in rural areas.

Abstract:
The motivation behind this thesis is to develop a procedure for internetworking the Defense Data Network (DDN) with an Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN). To accomplish this internetworking problem an integrated gateway must be designed to compensate for incompatibilities between the two networks. This thesis approaches this problem by giving a description of the two networks, DDN and ISDN, and also presenting a general approach to gateway design. This information is then combined into a detailed procedure for implementing a gateway to internetwork the DDN and ISDN. This is followed by a discussion of the practical aspects of the DDN/ISDN internetworking problem.

In order to enhance the learning effect, much attention has been paid to develop new paradigms of learning. With the prosperity of the Internet and multimedia technology, e-learning has become more popular recently. Undoubtedly, course materials are one of the most important contributions to the successful progress of e-learning. Thus, there are more and more academic and practical works that are engaged in e-learning course materials. However, the formats of materials are different among most Learning Management Systems, which makes the materials difficult to share and exchange. Recently, efforts to study the problems have led to the realization of some standards for unifying the materials, such as SCORM(Shareable Content Object Reference Model). Although SCORM improve the reusability of materials, there still exist several fundamental problems that remain to be solved. For instance, the materials need to be copied physically among Learning Management Systems to get the advantage of reusability. In addition, SCORM materials can only be presented on SCORM compatible Learning Management System, which limits the reusability of materials. In this thesis, we propose an e-learning materials integration framework based on Web Services technology. In the framework, learning materials are represented as web services. Then we can publish the web services on a registry center. On the other hand, material requesters can find required materials and binding information by searching the registry center. Then they can write client programs to invoke the functions of the web services. There are some interesting features in the framework. Firstly, a fantastic editor is developed to convert a SCORM material with raw data into a web service, which makes it easier to create web service materials. Secondly, with the dynamic binding feature of web services, we can reuse materials without physical copy. Third, due to the open characteristics of web services, material requesters are free to use any programming language to implement the programs to bind the web services.

ABSTRACT Managerial Platform of Digital Teaching Materials is an information system based on knowledge management. The main purpose is to integrate digital teaching materials for sharing. Through promotion of digital learning, there are more users . Different types of platform were established and with increasing attention on service quality. From the service quality aspect, what kind of service and functions should a system provide to increase the satisfaction and behavior intention of the users, are the concerns of management and developers. To understand the influence of service quality on Managerial Platform of Digital Teaching Materials, this study adopted the PZB model and with other literature reviews, developed the “Survey of Service quality, satisfaction and behavior intention of Managerial Platform of Digital Teaching Materials”. Through questionnaire survey method and quantitive analysis, the result shown: 1. The factors influenced service quality are: response, dependability and guaranteed solicitude. 2. There is a significant difference between the expectation and perception of service quality. 3. There is a significant difference between demographic variables and behavior intention, but not with satisfaction. 4. Service quality and satisfaction are correlated. 5. Service quality and “loyalty and devotion”are positively correlated. 6. Satisfaction and “loyalty and devotion”are positively correlated. Keyword: Managerial Platform of Digital Teaching Materials, service quality, satisfaction, behavior intention
