When asked for a definition of the digital humanities, I often fall back on a crisp formula. Digital humanists use computation to generate, organize, publish, or interpret humanistic data. This covers most of the bases, but it's also a bit abstract. “What sort of computation?” a colleague sometimes asks. “I use a computer at work; why aren't I a digital humanist?” To this, I agree; there isn't much daylight between digital and analogue scholarship. Less interesting than what separates the two domains is the question of what unites them. In my view, the most significant shared ingredient is technology.

Abstract:
The publication of information is essential for expanding the benefits of public health throughout the Asia-Pacific region. All academics are familiar with the adage “Publish or perish,” but for public health, this should be rewritten as “Publish or the population perishes.” Publication and communication in public health continues to undergo rapid change. There are many challenges that a regional journal faces. The number of printed journals is beginning to decline. Digital publishing and extensive databases and search engines have become the only practical way to access data. But the advent of digital publishing has seen the arrival of profit-making entrepreneurs. Whether a Journal is in the printed form or digital, it remains the key communication in public health and ultimately improve the health of the people. The Asia-Pacific Journal of Public Health (APJPH), which is owned by Asia Pacific Academic Consortium for Public Health ( APACPH) and published by Sage ensures that your data gets maximum digital exposure in the region where it can make a difference. Over the years, APJPH has increased its impact factor and gained in prestige. Although impact factor of a journal is important in documenting the recognition of work by academics, it does not necessarily reflect importance to our region. There needs to be a re-evaluation of publication and communication strategies so that all citizens of the Asia-Pacific region benefit.

Abstract:
The use of digital technologies within research has led to a proliferation of data, many new forms of research output and new modes of presentation and analysis. Many scientific communities are struggling with the challenge of how to manage the terabytes of data and new forms of output, they are producing. They are also under increasing pressure from funding organizations to publish their raw data, in addition to their traditional publications, in open archives. In this paper I describe an approach that involves the selective encapsulation of raw data, derived products, algorithms, software and textual publications within “scientific publication packages”. Such packages provide an ideal method for: encapsulating expert knowledge; for publishing and sharing scientific process and results; for teaching complex scientific concepts; and for the selective archival, curation and preservation of scientific data and output. They also provide a bridge between technological advances in the Digital Libraries and eScience domains. In particular, I describe the RDF-based architecture that we are adopting to enable scientists to construct, publish and manage “scientific publication packages” - compound digital objects that encapsulate and relate the raw data to its derived products, publications and the associated contextual, provenance and administrative metadata.

Abstract:
More and more of the Department's academic and outreach communications on the Internet involve the use of digital photos. While enhancing visual appeal and conveying information that cannot be communicated via text is an obvious benefit, it is critical that digital collections be efficiently and effectively managed at the client level (personal workstation) and also the server level. To assist faculty and staff who routinely publish on the web and those who contribute to the Ohio State Univ.'s WebGarden online image database, a new client application was developed to assist in viewing and organizing digital photos on their workstation. Based on FileMaker Pro database software, a standalone program name DPM (Digital Photo Manager) was developed that runs without the user having to have FileMaker software installed on their system. DPM allows the user to scan a folder of digital photos, create thumbnails, add appropriate captions and cataloging information, and even display a full-screen slideshow. When the user is ready to publish on the web, they upload their file into a portion of the department website managed by Gallery software, a free PHP-based application that integrates with various web server programs and handles any number of user-specific digital albums. Following this, a website was developed that allows the user to select a photo from their online album, add 1-3 lines of captioning, and enter their name for a photo credit. The website automatically applies a standard background, creates four different sizes of the image, renames the files into a standard naming convention used for all images on the server, saves each file into a specific folder, and provides the user with the URL address for the digital files.

Abstract:
This thesis is an evaluation of the campaign [The digitally curious] that is part of the regional marketing campaign Futurum.kom. Its purpose was to strengthen the library's role in society. The campaign includes Regionbibliotek Kalmar, Länsbibliotek Sydost and also 25 public libraries in Kronoberg, Kalmar and Blekinge. The campaign [The digitally curious] is one of several cluster campaigns targeting their marketing to a specific audience and aims to promote awareness of what libraries have to offer and provide information on digital media and services. The target group for the campaign is a man between 45-65 years old, who is interested in digital technology. The campaign ran from September 19 to October 2, 2011, and included digital activities. The thesis addresses these questions: What has the campaign [The digitally curious] for overall goals and how relevant were they? What was the audience for [The digitally curious] and did they reach it? What marketing channels did the library use and why them? To what extent did the librarians perceive that the objectives of the campaign were achieved? How did the public value the digital activities in the public library and how did they perceive the cluster campaigns, [The digitally curious], message. The method used in the thesis was case studies, which included a survey of the public, interviews with librarians and document analysis. Our study revealed that there is a need in society for digital activities to bridge the digital divide. The marketing campaign received positive feedback but the target group did not come to the extent that was desired. It was also revealed that to be successful in marketing and to work on bridging the digital divide, collaboration is a useful method.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to investigate upper secondary school teachers’ perception of publisher produced digital tools within the frame of each teachers’ subject teaching in Swedish. The study questions following the issues: (1) what attitude do teachers have towards publisher produced digital tools within the field of their subject Swedish? (2) Which, if any, expectations from the principal/ school administration do the teachers have of using the publisher produced digital tool in their education? And (3) how is the publisher produced digital tool applied in the education? To answer these questions, semi-structured interviews were conducted with six upper secondary school teachers who, among other subjects, teach Swedish. This study relies on a phenomenographic method and the phenomenon is the publisher produced digital tool. The result shows that the six interviewed teachers use publisher produced digital tools between 10 and 20 percent of their lesson time in subject of Swedish. That low utilization can partially be explained by the teachers’ long tradition of constructing their own teaching materials. Another explanation could be that publisher produced digital tools are relatively new and that the teachers feel uncomfortable using them. The expectations from the principal/school administration about the teachers’ usage of these digital tools in their teaching is relatively low. Whether the usage of publisher produced digital tools is going to increase or not in the future is unknown – it is up to the teachers of Swedish to determine.

Abstract:
This study aims to analyze the leadership of a governmental urban planning administration in southern Sweden during the pandemic 2021. Based on this purpose, the following questions have been formulated: How do the managerial role act out in a digital work environment? How do employees perceive that digital leadership? What do employees think about working from home? This qualitative case study has been conducted to answer these questions whereas the main form of information gathering has been through qualitative interviews, with regular employees and managers. The results showed that the leadership role has changed in many aspects since the pandemic began, especially in how the communication between co-workers is handled. The transition from working full-time in the office, to mostly working from home, has resulted in a change in how managers primarily handle meetings and social interactions. It has become more difficult to maintain social cohesion between employees, but measurements to maintain it has been implemented and is something the employees appreciate. That working from home will become increasingly common in public administration is the general perception among all employees. It is particularly mentioned that the gained increased work efficiency and the time savings, especially regarding less commuting, will make it difficult to convince the employees to return to the office on a full-time basis.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to examine if digital public libraries are serendipitous environments. Serendipity in this instance is defined as finding something unexpected and valuable, while searching for something else. A survey was conducted at two Swedish digital public libraries, where the patrons were asked to fill in a questionnaire online. The questions were based on the work on serendipitous digital environments by Lori McCay-Peet, as well as considerations of human factors that could possibly influence serendipity. The result indicate that a majority of patrons experience serendipity at the digital library, although it’s still more common to do so at the physical library or on other web sites. The result also confirms the importance of taking human factors into account when studying serendipity. The patrons who said they didn’t experience serendipity at the physical library or on other web sites, didn’t experience it at the digital library either – or at least only partially. However, the patrons who didn’t experience serendipity at the digital library still did so in other environments. A digital library is an environment with many possibilities for serendipitous encounters and discoveries, but what is missing is a better understanding of how serendipity can actually help in finding information. By teaching patrons to actively seek out serendipity, and by offering a serendipitous digital environment in which to do so, the library can further information literacy in our society.

Abstract:
This is a literature review with aim of analyzing research on digital coaching based on Self-Determination theory. The literature review is based on 15 articles and uses the Self-determination theory (SDT) as an analytical framework for motivational factors as it’s a theory about human motivation, development and well-being. The theory has shown a positive effect on healthy lifestyle habits because the inner motivation has proven to be important for sustainable results. Physical activity contributes to many positive benefits for health and research shows a positive correlation between digital health interventions and commitment to physical activity. Training with a digital coach is flexible but we need to know more to know how digital coaches can motivate their clients at a distance. The design for this study is a systematic literature review with the aim of answering the study's research questions by analyzing and compiling previous research, which creates an overview of the research situation. Results shows that the more support the client receives from a digital coach, the more positive effects on physical activity. The various coaching platforms that have been studied are apps, web-based platform, telephone/SMS and video coaching and regardless of the platform, a positive result emerges. It’s important that the coach strengthens the client's autonomy, competence and relatedness through a collaboration where the client is involved in their goals and plans to feel that the activity and goal is self-chosen, within the client's area of competence and feels social belonging.

Burnett, Daniel John. "Designing digital and physical interactions for the Digital Public Space." Thesis, Lancaster University, 2017. http://eprints.lancs.ac.uk/86264/.

Full text
Abstract:
Over the course of the last decade there has been a perceivable shift in the way interactions occur with digital systems with a clear preference towards touchscreen based interactions. This move can be attributed in part to the Apple’s iPhone, first introduced in 2007, and whilst not the first touchscreen product, it was the first to lead to widespread adoption and use. This thesis seeks to develop new design interaction methods that recognise that we are moving away from a dominance of digital interactions with screens to one where interactions are supported by everyday things. These devices allow greater perspectives to be gained than when purely interacting by touchscreen. This is presented as an exploration of interaction methods surrounding intermediary objects that are both physical and digital in nature - phygital. Affordances are an important part of how people interact with devices in their everyday life; it is these affordances that let us understand how to use things around us. Affordances are also present in the digital world and are an important part of how the work presented in this thesis analysed the design of the phygital objects and interactions they enabled. This thesis draws on six case studies from a diverse range of projects undertaken as part of The Creative Exchange research project. Beginning with an exploration of current touchscreen interaction methods then moving towards identifying and suggesting new interaction models. Throughout this research, key ideas will be extracted, rationalised and presented individually for each Creative Exchange project, in such a way that allows conclusions to be drawn about physical and digital interactions in the Digital Public Space. Finally, this body of work concludes with a design manifesto which, provides a route away from strict screen interactions to one where more physical Natural User Interfaces that interact with the world. The manifesto will also serve prospective phygital interaction designers in the production of new interactions by identifying key findings such as matching affordances to the phygital objects.

Abstract:
This thesis examines the impact of the democratic promises of Internet communication technologies, social, and participatory media on the practice of public archaeology. It is focused on work within archaeological organisations in the UK in commercial archaeology, higher education, local authority planning departments and community settings, as well the voluntary planning departments and community settings, as well the voluntary archaeology sector archaeology sector . This work has taken an innovative approach to the subject matter through its use of a Grounded Theory method for data collection and analysis, and the use of a combination of online surveys, case studies and email questionnaires in order to address the following issues: the provision of authoritative archaeological information online; barriers to participation; policy and organisational approaches to evaluating success and archiving; community formation and activism, and the impact of digital inequalities and literacies. This thesis is the first overarching study into the use of participatory media in archaeology. It is an important exploration of where and how the profession is creating and managing digital platforms, and the expanding opportunities for networking and sharing information within the discipline, against a backdrop of rapid advancement in the use of Internet technologies within society. This work has made significant contributions to debates on the practice and impact of public archaeology. It has shown that archaeologists do not yet fully understand the complexities of Internet use and issues of digital literacy, the impact of audience demographics or disposition towards participation in online projects. It has shown that whilst recognition of democratic participation is not, on the whole, undertaken through a process of actively acknowledging responses to archaeological information, there remains potential for participatory media to support and accommodate these ideals. This work documents a period of great change within the practice of archaeology in the UK, and concludes with the observation that it is vital that the discipline undertake research into online audiences for archaeological information if we are to create sustainable digital public archaeologies.

Abstract:
Introduction. The aim of this study is to investigate how digital inclusion is constructed in Swedish library plans. This is done by examining: how discourses produce digital inclusion in twelve library plans, which motives for working with digital inclusion are expressed in these discourses and which factors are present in digital inclusion according to the library plans. Method. A discourse analysis is conducted on statements regarding public libraries’ work on digital inclusion in twelve library plans from twelve different municipalities in Stockholm county. The model used identifies signs and articulations about digital inclusion in the material, and analyzes the relationship and consequences of these. Analysis. The type of discourse analysis chosen for this study is discourse theory as presented by Winther Jørgensen and Phillips. A model of digital technology access, by Van Dijk, completes the analysis. Result. Three discourses on digital inclusion are present in the material: one democratic discourse, one digitalization discourse and one discourse of exclusion and inclusion. The digitalization discourse dominates and is closest to hegemony, but the democratic discourse is strong as well. Physical access to digital technology and skills access are the types of access most prominent in the discourses. Motivational and usage access are rarely mentioned. Conclusion. According to the dominating discourse in the studied library plans, digital inclusion is produced as a consequence of digitalization. This might lead to technological determinism. The important factors of digital inclusion involve having physical access to digital technology and the appropriate skills to handle the technology. Usage access is the type of access with the biggest inequality gap, but is the least present in the material. This is a two years master’s thesis in Library and Information Science.

Full text
Abstract:
An unstructured book is defined as a set of digital multimedia files called items, together with ordered subsets of them presented to its readers. Thus different readings of the same set of items are possible. Additionally, items may be shown in different versions and languages. The functionality of the software package SPRP used to publish and read such books is described with an overview of what it offers, in a way which should enable readers to further understand the underlying concept and its possible applications but without any details. The software allows the introduction of reader constraints which will prevent them from seeing certain items, as well as protecting the computer files from unauthorized viewing.

Oxfam is committed to supporting the participation of local actors in humanitarian and development responses. This includes ensuring their opinions and perspectives about priorities, needs, and appropriate ways of addressing issues are part of public debate. Oxfam advocates for their presence and participation in coordination meetings and other spaces for decision-making. We also provide support to local actors to write and publish their opinions and perspectives. This paper is a compilation of eight opinion pieces written by local actors in the Horn, East, and Central Africa region, with editing and publishing support from Oxfam. Abstract:
Education research is too often based on gaps in published research or the niche interests of researchers, rather than the priority challenges faced by schools and districts. As a result, the education studies that researchers design and publish are often not applicable to schools’ most pressing needs. To spur future research to address the specific equity goals of schools and districts, Digital Promise set out to define and test a collaborative process for developing practice-driven, equity-centered R&D agendas. Our process centered on convening a range of education stakeholders to listen to and prioritize the equity-related challenges that on-the-ground staff are facing, while considering prominent gaps in existing research and solutions. We selected two challenge topics around which to pilot this approach and create sample agendas (adolescent literacy and computational thinking).

Abstract:
Governments are responding to rapid change and growing demands by citizens and businesses by accelerating the digitalization of public services. They are updating their e-government capabilities, adding new digital tools and services, augmenting their data analytics capabilities, and putting in place digital economy development plans. Many of these changes are enabled by cloud computing technologies that have become commonplace in the digitally connected world. The rapidly scalable computing resources that cloud computing delivers via the internet bring cost benefits, improve agility, ensure resilience, and provide access to the latest solutions that digital technology can offer.
