Abstract:
This work presents the integration of several IPs to generate a system-on-chip (SoC) for digital television set-top box compliant to the SBTVD standard. Embedded consumer electronics for multimedia applications like video processing systems require large storage capacity and high bandwidth memory. Also, those systems are built from heterogeneous processing units, designed to perform specific tasks in order to maximize the overall system efficiency. A single off-chip memory is generally shared between the processing units to reduce power and save costs. The external memory access is one bottleneck when decoding high-definition video sequences in real time. In this work, a four-level memory hierarchy was designed to manage the decoded video in macroblock granularity with low latency. The use of the memory hierarchy in the system design is challenging because it impacts the system integration process and IP reuse in a collaborative design team. Practical strategies used to solve integration problems are discussed in this text. The SoC architecture was validated and is being progressively prototyped using a Xilinx Virtex-5 FPGA board.

Abstract:

This theses covers the design and implementation of recording functionality for a set-top box in a home network. An initial investigation is done and possibilities for extending the system to support specific features are presented.

Digital TV is becoming more common each day, and soon it will be more widely used than todays analogue standard. At the same time the need for recording TV shows remains the same or is increasing, which is shown by the number of PVR solutions popping up on the market.

The goal of this thesis work was to investigate the possibilities for extending an existing set-top box to support common PVR features and, if possible, to implement a prototype. This was supposed to be done in a home network environment with the set-top box as the digital media center.

A satisfying solution, covering basic recording functionality is defined and implemented. The solution includes recording to a USB hard drive and to a PC on the local network. On top of this, a graphical user interface is built and some simple benchmarks show the performance of the set-top box with the new functionality.

The number of available TV channels has increased the last couple of years and it is hard to get a good overview in a simple way. There are different techniques for sorting the information so that the user gets the required information, but no design is adapted neither to handle the new improved resolution nor the new intelligent functions. This thesis has been developed to get an example on how the new improved resolution can be used in the program guide and to get an interface with the intelligent functions. Desirable qualities for the program guide were stated for the sketching phase of the design, and the sketches were subsequently used as outlines for the computer-based design of the program guide. An implementation in scalable vector graphics (SVG) was made in a final prototype to demonstrate animations and usability. Finally there is a discussion about the contributions from this thesis.

Abstract:
This work aims to enhance a System-on-Chip (SoC) designed for Digital Television Set-Top Box in order to run applications according to the Brazilian Television standard (SBTVD) and to increase the performance by hardware. Two previous projects related to the Digital Television, "Rede H.264" and "GingaCDN", were used as base for this work. The "Rede H.264" had as main objective the development of codecs for the Brazilian standard. The result was a SoC for a Set-Top Box which includes a processor, audio and video decoders with output drivers, and user interface. Otherwise, the "GingaCDN" created a reference implementation for the middleware of the SBTVD, called Ginga. The first step was to add rules to compile Ginga on the development environment of the SoC, for which some configuration of the Ginga middleware needed to be changed. Performance improvement was obtained by hardware-software codesign where Ginga primitives that are time and processor consuming could be implemented in hardware. The gain is twofold: the system becomes faster and CPU resources are freed for other applications. In this work, the target was the graphical subsystem primitives of the middleware, where the impact is more significant. A study of the hardware characteristics of the system was made, and then a graphical function was chosen and implemented on hardware. All the steps needed to substitute a software function by an equivalent one implemented in hardware are described in the text. Among the contributions of this work, the way is openned to continue the expansion of the capabilities of the Set-Top Box by efficient hardware modules on a so called "Ginga-ready" SoC. The experience may be useful also to help the generation of the middleware for other platforms.

Johansson, Robert Bo. "Design and implementation of a prototype home media system for an IP-based settop box." Thesis, Linköping University, Department of Computer and Information Science, 2004. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:liu:diva-2303.

Abstract:

This thesis covers design and implementation of a media system solution for home networks with personal computers and a set-top box.

In a home there are effectively two independent media systems with the same purpose: the personal computer and the digital set-top box, with the purpose of delivering digital media in form of audio and video to the consumer.

The goal of the thesis work was to implement a solution that bridges the gap between the two systems, so that the user, from the set-top box, can play back media that is actually stored on one or several personal computers.

Our solution is based on UPnP technology, which is used for service discovery and control. The choice of UPnP is motivated by an evaluation of discovery protocols, which concludes that UPnP is the most suitable technology in this particular system. Also, an evaluation of suitable transport protocols was done. Here,HTTP was used.

For the personal computer, a media server and a graphical user interface for configuring the media server were created. For the set-top box, a media client, and a graphical user interface for browsing the content of the media server, were created. In conclusion, the creation of the prototype was successful and the set-top box was able to playback media that had been shared by the PC on the network.

Abstract:

The market for digital TV is developing and some industry actors focus on interactive TV. Interactive content and services that previously only were able to use through a standard PC are now available to use through the TV set. To distribute the services to the TV a so called set top box with broadband connection needs to be used. Such a box can be described as a unit where a standard PC and a digital TV receptor are integrated.

This thesis aims to investigate the market for electronic payment solutions with a focus on payment for interactive content and services in digital TV. The presumptive services are many which lead to a relative complex analysis of how they should be paid for. What kind of service is it really to be paid for?

In order to conduct an appropriate analysis this thesis contains an identification of five different service-/content types. The grouping we have conducted is in so called On Demand services, Voice over IP, Shopping, Interactive TV and web services. In order to be able to conduct a relevant assessment of how the distributed services should be paid for the understanding of the market situation is utterly important. Therefore the thesis contains a pre study of the different market actors that can be related to a set top box and interactive TV.

The study of eight different actors on the Swedish market provides an overview of content providers’ as well as payment companies’ view on how interactive content and services should be paid for. The result from the thesis is a recommendation on how an electronic payment solution should be designed and important aspects to think of. One of the key outcomes is that different services needs different types of payment solutions which implies that you should first decide on what type of services that are to be provided before a decision is made on the payment solution.

A byproduct from the thesis is the analysis model that facilitates analysis of services as well as payment solutions and - methods related to electronic payments and interactive media.

This study is to discuss the competitive strategy of digital interactive set-top box,and do stratigic analysis for the typical Taiwan firm, especially PC & consumer electronic firms. The necessity of compatibility & the likeliness of dominant standard is quite different between the cases of STB & PC. STB is a subsystem of ITV.The coordination of the interfaces between subsystems is quite important. The apperance of a dominant standard is influenced by many factors, such as market evolution, government interference etc.The firms has been competing in groups,in result of the alliances among these 3C firms. This study has applied 5-forces analysis to describe the industy. And do scenario analysis to develop strategy suitable for Taiwanese firms to apply.Three strategy has been concluded: 1. Being the standard follower in the ITV mass market. 2. Being the standard leader in the ITV niche market. 3. Producing other product that is similar to digital interactive STB. The adoption of strategies is up to where the market has evoluted.

Nowadays, with digital Set-Top Box, variety of media contents could be provided with ease and the performance of these contents becomes the focus of concern to media industry. Under the circumstances, the aim of this study is to integrate digital Set-Top Box with emotion perception interface as an audience measurement platform to enhance the measurement efficiency and quickly learn the reaction when audience viewing these contents. This study adopts and analyses the biophysical signals when audience watching video to make emotion recognition classification, which could use for recognizing audiences’ emotion reaction to media content. The use of pre-selected video would induce four audiences'' affective response included laughing, pleasure, disgust, fear, and normal. Meanwhile, Electrocardiogram of audiences through whole process will be recorded as well. After analyzation, acquisition features, and normalization, the seven biophysical signals from Electrocardiogram would be classified by KNN(K-Nearest Neighbor algorithm) classifier to recognize audience’s affective response. As a result, when recognized by four audience together, the accuracy of using video to induce audiences'' affective response and using KNN to classify seven biophysical signals are 76.09%. Moreover, when recognized by single audience, the accuracy of using self-testing data and using training data are 45.06% and 27.59%. Hence, individual difference will cause huge effect to the emotion recognition. To reduce deviation and increase accuracy, more experiment data would be extremely necessary.

This chapter defines a scenario for providing Health Services through the Digital Terrestrial Television (DTT), both for patients (monitoring health parameters) and healthy citizens. A number of services will be provided over DTT, not only by means of informative or interactive applications broadcast and installed on the set-top box, but also as transactional services through the secure return channel. However, much effort has to be spent to guarantee the usability of that new TV-based interface, which is quite different from that of a PC-based Web application.

Abstract:
In this paper a Digital Terrestrial Television (DTT) based voting system is presented. This electronic voting technology allows disabled users to cast their vote from home by using common well-known devices. The needed equipment are a TV set, a Set Top Box (STB) with its remote control and a telephone line. The complete infrastructure consists of an MHP (Multimedia Home Platform) application that acts as a client application, a server application that acts as a network/counting server for e-voting, and a security protocol based on asymmetric key encryption to ensure authentication and secrecy of the vote. The MHP application is broadcasted by a certified (e.g., national) TV channel that grants its originality. The user needs a smart card issued by a national authority and to sign the encrypted ballot. The voter can browse the application by acting on the STB remote control. The server application is in charge to verify user identity, to gather and store user’s encrypted ballots and finally to count votes. The communication between the client application and the server takes place by means of a secured channel (using HTTPS) while the voting operations are secured with the help of asymmetric keys encryption.

Abstract:
Conditional Access (CA) is typically used by pay-television operators to restrict access to content to authorized subscribers. While several commercial CA solutions exist for structured broadcasting, Internet-based television, and video-on-demand services, these solutions are mostly proprietary. Use of proprietary solutions incurs royalty payments and increased cost of components for Set-Top-Box manufacturers. In many developing countries Set-Top-Boxes for the migration to Digital Television will be subsidized by government. An efficient, flexible, and open conditional system that does not incur royalties or require specialised security hardware would be beneficial for these countries. In this chapter, the authors explore conditional access solutions that draw on the area of cryptographic key management and distribution for IPTV environments. They wrap up with propositions on how an open Cryptographic Access Control (CAC) system can be implemented practically by pay-television operators who have to handle a large number of subscriptions.
