This work consists of the study, design and implementation of DC-DC converters, used in lighting systems based on light emitting diodes (LEDs). Can be powered by an universal AC voltage source or battery, and the current in the LEDs is controlled digitally. The main objective is to present a proposal of new step-up/down converters topologies with full conversion much higher than that of conventional converters. So, is initially presented an overview of solid-state lighting (SSL). Following is presented the study on the dynamic behavior of converters based on modeling by the method of varying state-space average, ending with the design of a digital PI controller. This work resulted in the application for a patent PI-0801425-6 filed with the INPI, which presents a new family of converters with full conversion extremely wide, called cubic converters.<br>O presente trabalho consiste do estudo, projeto e implementação de conversores CCCC, aplicados em sistemas de iluminação de estado sólido baseado em diodos emissores de luz (LEDs). Podem ser alimentados por uma fonte de tensão alternada universal ou por uma bateria sendo que a corrente nos LEDs é controlada digitalmente. O objetivo principal é apresentar uma proposta de novas topologias de conversores abaixadores/elevadores com faixa de conversão muito maior que a dos conversores convencionais. Portanto, inicialmente é apresentada uma visão geral sobre iluminação de estado sólido (SSL). Na sequência, é apresentado o estudo sobre o comportamento dinâmico dos conversores baseado na modelagem através do método de variáveis de espaço de estados médio, finalizando com o dimensionamento de um controlador PI digital. Este trabalho resultou no pedido de patente de invenção PI-0801425-6 depositado junto ao INPI, o qual apresenta uma nova família de conversores com faixa de conversão extremamente larga, denominados de conversores cúbicos.<br>Doutor em Ciências

A fonte é formada por associações em série e em paralelo de módulos de menor po-tência para que, em conjunto, possam atender às exigências requeridas de tensão e de corrente dos magnetos. Cada módulo é constituído de dois estágios, um de entrada e outro de saída, em que o segundo é o objeto de estudo deste trabalho. O estágio de saída é constituído por um conversor ponte completa associado a um filtro de terceira ordem. Inicialmente é feita a modelagem do estágio de saída e apresentado um modelo apropriado a uma quantidade genérica de módulos associados em série. Em seguida é feita a discretização da planta e o controle em espaço de estados. Para a alocação dos pólos do sistema em malha fechada é utilizado o Regulador Quadrático Linear Digital. Entretanto, quando módulos são associados, aumenta-se consideravelmente a ordem do sistema e torna-se inviável a medição de todos os estados da planta. Então, é proposto um observador ótimo de ordem reduzida para que este seja capaz de fornecer ao con-trolador os estados que não são medidos. A análise de estabilidade permitiu verificar a robustez do controle em conjunto com o observador de estados. Na associação de módulos em paralelo foram consideradas que as correntes da saída de cada módulo são parcelas do estado que corresponde à corrente das cargas magnéticas. Baseado nesta premissa e no controle feito para o arranjo de módulos em série, foi proposta uma estratégia de controle para o arranjo em paralelo. Os resultados em simulação, tanto para a configuração de módulos em série quanto em paralelo, permitem verificar os desempenhos dinâmicos do controlador e observador de estados.<br>This dissertation presents a proposal of a discrete-time state-feedback control law applied to the Sirius magnetic source power supply. In order to meet the magnets' required voltage and current levels the source is formed by series and parallel associa-tion of modular converters. Each module is made up of two stages, input and output, in which the later is addressed this work. The output stage is constituted by a full bridge converter associated with a third-order filter. Initially a mathematical model is obtained for a single module. This model is later extended to represent the connection of several modules in series. Then the plant is discretized and state feedback law is designed to control the system. The optimal technique Digital Linear Quadratic Regu-lator was used to place the closed-loop poles. However, when modules are associated, due the order of the system it becomes impracticable to measure all the states. Then an optimal reduced order observer is proposed to provide to controller the states that are not measured. An stability analysis is performed in order to verify the controller robustness. For the association of modules in parallel was considered that the output currents of each module are the parcels of the state corresponding to the current of the magnetic loads. Based on this premise and in the previously control design for the series modules association, is proposed a control topology for the parallel arrange-ment. Simulation results were obtained, for the both configuration of modules series and parallel, and the performances of the controller and state-observer were verified.

In order to increase the power density, the discontinuous conducting mode (DCM) and small inductance is adopted for high power bidirectional dc-dc converter. The DCM related current ripple is minimized with multiphase interleaved operation. The turn-off loss caused by the DCM induced high peak current is reduced by snubber capacitor. The energy stored in the capacitor needs to be discharged before device is turned on. A complementary gating signal control scheme is employed to turn on the non-active switch helping discharge the capacitor and diverting the current into the anti-paralleled diode of the active switch. This realizes the zero voltage resonant transition (ZVRT) of main switches. This scheme also eliminates the parasitic ringing in inductor current. This work proposes an inductance and snubber capacitor optimization methodology. The inductor volume index and the inductor valley current are suggested as the optimization method for small volume and the realization of ZVRT. The proposed capacitance optimization method is based on a series of experiments for minimum overall switching loss. According to the suggested design optimization, a high power density hardware prototype is constructed and tested. The experimental results are provided, and the proposed design approach is verified. In this dissertation, a general-purposed power stage model is proposed based on complementary gating signal control scheme and derived with space-state averaging method. The model features a third-order system, from which a second-order model with resistive load on one side can be derived and a first-order model with a voltage source on both sides can be derived. This model sets up a basis for the unified controller design and optimization. The Î -type model of coupled inductor is introduced and simplified to provide a more clearly physical meaning for design and dynamic analysis. These models have been validated by the Simplis ac analysis simulation. For power flow control, a unified controller concept is proposed based on the derived general-purposed power stage model. The proposed unified controller enables smooth bidirectional current flow. Controller is implemented with digital signal processing (DSP) for experimental verification. The inductor current is selected as feedback signal in resistive load, and the output current is selected as feedback signal in battery load. Load step and power flow step control tests are conducted for resistive load and battery load separately. The results indicate that the selected sensing signal can produce an accurate and fast enough feedback signal. Experimental results show that the transition between charging and discharging is very smooth, and there is no overshoot or undershoot transient. It presents a seamless transition for bidirectional current flow. The smooth transition should be attributed to the use of the complementary gating signal control scheme and the proposed unified controller. System simulations are made, and the results are provided. The test results have a good agreement with system simulation results, and the unified controller performs as expected.<br>Ph. D.
