Full textThis paper is divided into five chapters with a preface and an introduction giving a brief historic review of the Chinese libraries. Emphasis is placed on the development and present situation of Chinese Librarianship and Information Science. Chapter 1 describes the development of the Internet in China by comparing it with Germany, and explains how it became the basis for China''s current digital library. Chapter 2 discusses the digitizing of the Chinese rare books, as well as digital projects in P.R. China, Taiwan and Hongkong. Later the juristic and technological problems of digitizing as well as other related topics are discussed. Chapter 3 examines public libraries, focusing on the campaign against illiteracy and special services for disadvantaged social groups. Chapter 4 looks in to how globalization and international cooperation has become increasingly important to Chinese libraries and librarianship in the international arena. Chapter 5 is devoted to the three most important factors: library law, information sharing and education for the further development of Chinese librarianship. The conclusion outlines a possible model for the future of Chinese libraries in the 21st century. Traditional libraries like public libraries and digital libraries should develop at the same time. This means that China has two tasks: building libraries up and modernizing them so that not only the scientists and researchers have access to the inevitable Information, but also the general population should have access to "Lesestoff," where people from both the city and countryside would be allowed the same number of books. This development model for a developing country like China, with a digital network environment, can only be realized with an effective library law and international cooperation.

Full textUp to now, the general image of a “library” has remained alarmingly unchanged. But the advancing digitization of media and the mobilization of media use require new meaning and content. Among experts the idea of service- and experience-oriented learning spaces evolves as a common concept, replacing the classical media storehouses. But how promising is this new concept? And how is this claim met and sustainably ensured? Based on changes in the information and media sector, the article describes the general framework for innovation management in libraries and the related conclusions. Subsequently, some concrete development opportunities for physical libraries are presented

Full textWhile the importance of multilingual access to information systems is unquestioned, it remains unclear if and to what extent system functionalities, interfaces or interaction patterns need to be adapted according to country or language specific user behaviors. This dissertation postulates that the identification of country and language level differences in user interactions is a crucial step for designing effective multilingual digital libraries. Due to the lack of comparable studies and analysis approaches, the research in this dissertation identifies indicators that could show differences in the interactions of users from different countries or languages. A customized logging format and logger (Europeana Language Logger) is developed in order to trace these variables in a digital library. For each investigated variable, differences between country groups are presented and discussed. Country profiles are developed as a tool to visualize different characteristics in comparison. To generalize the findings from the case study, the individual variables are prioritized by determining which ones show the most significant country and language level differences.

Full textDigitization produces ‚hybrid‘ objects that are readable as digital data files but at the same time still ‚contain‘ the original cultural-historical object. In this perspective, ‚digital collections‘, ‚digital libraries‘, etc. are in fact hybrid collections, or libraries. For musical artefacts, the range of historical media is especially complex, which again concerns the digital world. Digital Humanities publications also contribute to the complex and confusing situation as they themselves are not only ‚information‘, but as a rule, complex and hybrid textual systems that often contain complete digitized re-publications of cultural objects, providing them with digital ‚inscriptions‘, and interlinking them. So the hybridity of ‚digital libraries‘ increases as soon as Digital Humanities publications are integrated. Therefore, metadata should mirror precisely the hybrid nature of the digitized/digital objects catalogued.

Full textMore and more the internet becomes the information and communication platform for teachings and research. University libraries and their structures as well as their services are concerned with the changes of universities in general. But are the university libraries prepared for this change? In Germany a regionally distributed infrastructure of information within the range of film and media science to be found. Distributed resources in the form of media or offers in internet are variously present, but only occasionally detectable. One of the aims of the exploration accomplished in 2001 was to provide a concept for a VIRTUAL LIBRARY FILM AND MEDIA STUDIES. For this reason the different demands of lectures for informations were investigated. Therefore a mix of qualitative and quantitative methods were used. As the first point of analysis a comparison of the individual internet offers was used on available selected virtual specialized portals (DFG promoted). Expert interviews to bring into focus the lecturers of the two largest film universities in Germany (Potsdam and Munich) formed the central intention. With this exploration analysing the interviews by means of transcription and following analysis of contents an exact need profile has been worked out. These investigations were rounded off by the quantitative method of the questionnaires, which were sent to film librarians. It had to be found out, how the intermedians assess the lecturers need of media information. With the rapid development of digitally specialized information, also in the internet, librarians must permanently observe the changes, in order to update their services.

Full textThrough digitization of cultural heritage and online access to it, memory institutions such as museums, libraries and archives can provide new instruments for engaging users with cultural heritage. The thesis describes interactions in cultural heritage information systems and links them to access points of the digital material. Based on use cases and a grounded theory approach for data analysis, a framework for interactions was developed. This framework offers a holistic approach to understand interactions and their interplay with information access. The interrelatedness allows stakeholders in cultural heritage institutions to understand that each decision in the information design influences how users access and interact with digital material. The framework was then used in a content analysis of 72 cultural heritage systems that were clustered according to their characteristics. The outcomes reveal shortcomings and pinned down peculiarities between the groups Museums, Libraries, Archives, Aggregators, Collections and Communities. In a next step, the framework was applied as a tool for evaluation to help shape effective system design that guides the implementation of purposeful interactions. For that, one system per cultural heritage group was chosen as a use case for the evaluation. The results are recommendations for a more effective system design that acknowledges the impact of interactions on the access modes. This dissertation promotes a new perspective on interactions and derives strategies for effective system design.

Full textUser studies in digital libraries face two fundamental challenges. The first is the necessity of running more user studies in an online environment. Users can access digital library collections and services worldwide and the services should be usable at any time. This need for more online studies is coupled with a second need, a demand to test under realistic conditions outside of laboratories in users’ natural environment. Asynchronous remote usability tests are a methodological approach that might answer both needs: they allow participants to take part in a study at a time and place of their choice, often in the participants’ natural environment. Any chosen place, however, might be noisy. Distractions are ubiquitous in a user’s natural environment. An awareness of the potential influences of distractions on users’ behavior during test situations is of great importance, because the validity of a study depends on the quality of the data. If an instrument allows systematic mistakes in measurements because of distractions, the validity is at risk. This dissertation examined if distraction in the users’ natural environment produces a systematic mistake in digital library studies that take place at a time and location of participants’ choice. In order to investigate the existence of distractions during online user studies in digital libraries and to analyze the influence(s) of that distraction, a psychological experiment was set up. It ex¬amined completion time scores between participants in a laboratory and participants in their natural environment. The results of the experiment showed that participants were highly distracted and that participants in their natural environment needed more time to complete the same test. The setting did not affect successful task completions, the participants’ judgments of sites or their decision-making processes. This work can conclude that it does not matter where we test, but it matters what happens during the test.

Full textTwo major Open Science innovations, Open Access and research data sharing, have been studied in detail in this thesis. A large-scale survey and personal interviews are used to gain detailed insights from a range of disciplines. In addition, a case study in the High Energy Physics (HEP) community was used to study the results in practice. The results show that a rather positive attitude towards both, Open Access and research data sharing is not reflected in the researchers’ practices. Disciplinary differences prevail and relate to the different publishing cultures and research workflows. The results indicate that quality and prestige of research output are perceived as very important in determining a researcher’s reputation. Researchers prefer community-approved publication outlets. They hesitate to explore new innovations, such as data sharing, for which only few established workflows exist in digital scholarly communication. Interviewees highlight the significance of a (missing) link between such approaches on the one hand and the current incentive system and the research assessment schemes on the other. The results indicate that barriers can be overcome. In the case study, a strong collaboration with the community facilitated enhanced feedback loops to develop tailored and targeted services for Open Science. Researchers in the case study were successfully engaged in new innovative workflows: a crowdsourcing tool and data sharing in a digital library. The results highlight that opportunities of Open Science are not yet explored widely. But with targeted support, it is possible to build on best practices and develop strategies that engage communities in new innovations. The results furthermore demand new strategies to establish links from Open Science services to the academic incentive system. It is needed to revisit the current research assessment scheme in regard to potential support mechanisms for Open Science.

Full textIn spite of huge document sets for cross-database literature searches, academic users expect a high ratio of relevant and qualitative documents in result sets. It is particularly the order and structure of the listed results (ranking) that play an important role when designing search systems alongside the direct full text access for documents. Users also expect flexible information systems which allow influencing the ranking of documents and application of alternative ranking techniques. This thesis proposes two value-added approaches for search systems which treat typical problems in searching scientific literature and seek to improve the retrieval situation on a measurable level. The two value-added services, semantic treatment of heterogeneity (the example of cross-concordances) and re-ranking on Bradfordizing, which are applied in different search phases, are described in detail and their effectiveness in typical subject-specific searches is evaluated in the empirical part of the thesis. The preeminent goal of the thesis is to study if the proposed, alternative re-ranking approach Bradfordizing is operable in the domain of bibliographic databases, and if the approach is profitable, i.e. serves as a value added, for users in information systems. We used topics and data from two evaluation projects (CLEF and KoMoHe) for the tests. The intellectually assessed documents come from seven academic abstracting and indexing databases representing social science, political science, economics, psychology and medicine. The evaluation of the cross-concordances (82 topics altogether) shows that the retrieval results improve significantly for all cross-concordances, indicating that interdisciplinary cross-concordances have the strongest (positive) effect on the search results. The evaluation of Bradfordizing re-ranking (164 topics altogether) shows that core zone (core journals) documents display significantly higher precision than was seen for documents in zone 2 and zone 3 (periphery journals) for most test series. This post-Bradfordizing relevance advantage can be demonstrated empirically across a very broad basis of topics and two independent document corpora as well for journals and monographs.

Full textIn recent decades, the computer has been displacing increasingly analogue writing tools and means of communication. This has an impact on the creative process of writers as well who leave their records more and more as digital objects. Therefore, special collections are being confronted with the task to acquire and archive digital papers in the future and to develop a digital preservation strategy for them. The present thesis deals with the period before the acquisition of papers and manuscripts by a special collection and brings up the question what kind of measures curators could take in cooperation with writers in order to make digital preservation possible. During this period, papers are still the personal archives of writers. The intervention in personal archives on the part of the curators is referred to as pre-custodial intervention. The work initially discusses the theoretical foundations of this question and exposes the need of pre-custodial intervention in writers archives. By means of a literature review the thesis shows that the state of research in Germany, Austria and Switzerland compared to English-speaking countries is deficient and identifies reasons for this finding. In addition, possible actions of pre-custodial intervention are taken from the literature and developed further. Thereupon, expert interviews in selected special collections as well as an online survey of writers review this findings and fill them with other data. Based on the results of the literature review and the empirical part, a cloud-based archiving and working environment for writers is proposed as the main component of an intervention strategy for special collections.
Thesis, Norwegian University of Science and Technology, Department of Computer and Information Science, 2000. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:no:ntnu:diva-225.

Thesis, Norwegian University of Science and Technology, Department of Computer and Information Science, 2002. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:no:ntnu:diva-222.

This master thesis is aimed at demonstrating that intellectual property can be published in the Internet by digital libraries in accordance with copyright laws. It proposes an architecture/paradigm for managing rights when publishing information through Digital Libraries involving digital rights management. Through an analysis of copyright laws and international treaties, the needs of Digital Libraries and evolving standards and systems for Digital Rights Management the foundations for a such an architecture are identified. Based on this analysis an architecture/paradigm for a system for digital rights management in digital libraries is proposed. As part of this work a prototype of such a system has been implemented and is documented in this paper.

Full textThe motivation for this work is based on two recognized research issues for digital libraries. One is the need for interlinked and semantically rich information spaces where relationship information is of particular importance. The other is the serviceoriented architecture of digital libraries. The digital libraries of the future will consist of smaller and independent systems that each will provide different functionality and access to different contents.
This work defines and explores a service for managing and using explicit relationships – the Digital Library Link Service. The service implements an instance-oriented approach to relationships that enables any kind of typed relationship to be created among the information objects of digital libraries. The service can be used to create consistent information spaces on top of digital library repositories and enables an associative organization and retrieval of information objects.
This work shows that the use of a fine-grained relationship model implemented as distributed objects enables distribution of the relationship network while still being able to support constraints and maintain consistency. The cost of this, however, is a complexity that can reduce performance and scalability due to the call latency of network communication. A prototype is developed that utilizes caching in order to solve this. Tests conducted show that this technique significantly contributes to the scalability and efficiency. This is particularly important when the relationship information is distributed across different processes with high calllatency in between.
The work further presents a prototype application for enhancing bibliographic catalogues with the rich set of relationship types defined in the bibliographic information model proposed by the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions – the FRBR model. The Digital Library Link Service is used to implement an index that facilitates the navigation of bibliographic relationships in order to explore bibliographic entities along the paths laid out by the FRBR model. This demonstrates the applicability of the service as a flexible tool for associative organization of information objects.
The main applications of the service are limited to systems with a relaxed requirement in terms of automatic processing of larger sets of relationships. The main access paradigm explored for interacting with relationships is by navigation. The need for automatic and efficient processing of a large relationship network, e.g. for the purpose of indexing, can be supported by extending the system with additional functionality. Another recognized problem is that the use of CORBA references to address long-term persistent information can cause referential integrity problems. One possible way to solve this is to assigning objects globally unique identifiers that later can be used to recover from referential integrity problems.
