Abstract:
My thesis has been organized into four chapters. Starting from a general point of view, chapter one is an analysis of retailing, its evolution and major changes during years. A special attention has also been dedicated to online and offline marketing strategies as well as the relationship between customers and retailing. Chapter two is then about digitalization in retailing and how companies are reacting to this phenomena with a particular focus on multichannel and Omnichannel strategies. Chapter three deals with the analysis of e-commerce, websites and multi-brand retailers, considering also the way apparel websites work and have been developed over time. Finally, chapter four focuses on the Non Solo Sport case study, its history, business model, marketing strategies, competitors, innovation policies and how they are dealing with digitalization. My thesis has mainly been a research work, supported by the company's team throughout the writing and elaboration process.

Abstract:
The concept of digitalization has become more and more prevalent due to the unprecedented computational power of our current digital machines. Swedish healthcare has been focusing on digitalization in the form of e-health during the last decade and the amount of digital services is rapidly increasing. By using modern technology to create smarter and more efficient processes it is possible to improve quality for patients and users.There is a need for more reliable knowledge about digitalization and its potential for efficiency. This project seeks to investigate and discuss efficiency in digitalization. The purpose is to directly contribute with more data on the topic.This project implements a qualitative research method as well as a case-study to conduct efficiency tests and compare manual processes to digitalized ones.The research methodology consists of a literature study, the construction of a digitalized process, and two tests where each test involves executing a process both manually and digitally. The processes involve document generation and communication, within the healthcare sector.The test results show that digitalization achieves an overall efficiency increase of 333% when all results are summarized. Overall, it is clear from the results that digitalization leads to increased efficiency. The efficiency achieved varies from process to process. In the general case, an increase in efficiency is observed, but sometimes also a decrease.
Konceptet digitalisering har blivit allt mer utbrett på grund av den enorma datorkraft som finns i våra nuvarande digitala maskiner. Den svenska sjukvården har fokuserat på digitalisering i form av e-hälsa under det senaste decenniet och antalet digitala tjänster ökar snabbt. Genom att använda modern teknik för att skapa smartare och effektivare processer är det möjligt att förbättra kvaliteten för patienter och användare.Det finns ett behov av mer tillförlitlig kunskap om digitalisering och dess potential för effektivitet. Detta projekt har som mål att undersöka denna effektivitet. Syftet är att direkt bidra med mer data om ämnet digitalisering.Detta projekt bygger på en kvalitativ forskningsmetod samt en fallstudie för att genomföra effektivitetsprov och jämföra manuella med digitaliserade arbetsprocesser.Den använda forskningsmetodiken består av en litteraturstudie, konstruktion av en digitaliserad process, samt två tester där vardera test utvärderar både en manuell och digital process. Processerna innefattar dokumentgenerering och kommunikation, inom sjukvården.Testresultaten visar att digitalisering uppnår en total effektivitetsökning på 333% när alla resultat sammanställs. Överlag är det från resultaten uppenbart att digitalisering leder till ökad effektivitet. Effektiviteten som uppnås varierar från process till process. I det generella fallet observeras ökad effektivitet, men ibland även minskad.

Abstract:
As today’s world is becoming more digital, so is almost all business markets are becoming more and more digital and companies that choose to digitalize seem to not only increase efficiency and profitability. It also makes the company better at adapting to change. Despite these upsides, not all companies are digitalizing proven in some part by the panic among companies created by the Covid-19 pandemic. This study aims to look at if the categorist of management in companies can influence the company's ability to digitalize. This is done by measuring the dynamic capabilities and the entrepreneurial orientation in management and comparing it to the company’s digital maturity. The data was quantitatively by having managers in Sweden completes a survey. A theoretical framework is created to formulate the major theories of the study and relevant hypotheses. To analyze the collected data the multiple regression analysis method was used to see if the variables that any statistical relationship and if the variables have statistical relevance. The results showed that entrepreneurial orientation dint does not have any statistical relevance however dynamic capabilities had a statistical relevance and quite a big effect on the digital maturity of the company. However, a bigger sample for the questioner is suspected to show that entrepreneurial orientation could have had statistical relevance as the sample group for this study was quite small. This study has helpt to fill the gap in knowledge on how management characteristics affect digitalization in companies. The author of this study recommends future research teams conduct more quantitative approaches to get a better picture of how management affects digitalization, by looking at other categorists in management, the important part is that they use a bigger sample size.

Abstract:
There are a lot of different discharge regulations that ships have to follow but there is no general way to collect this information for the cruise ship companies. One company, Holland American Group, have created a matrix where they have stored all information regarding dispatch regulations, which they collect manually. As regulations have become stricter and more specific for different areas at sea it has caused the matrix to grow vastly, making working with the matrix tedious. The project aims to investigate how the information in the matrix is presented to the user. The ambition is to find alternative ways to work with the matrix to improve efficiency in order to reduce the time it takes to work with it. While also being able to create dispatch schedules for itineraries which prevent non-compliant discharges from the vessels. The problem is to present information in a different manor, today the information lays inside an Excel spreadsheet which has grown significantly and is therefore no longer manageable in its present format. A solution, to create a planning tool which assists crew members who work with planning each itinerary’s dispatches, has been suggested. Two different designs are presented, one with inspiration from apps and another inspired by traditional computer programs. The work process and solutions are based on concepts and theories from large industrial systems and sustainability as the main perspective. Therefore, the solutions are motivated with methods commonly used in creating, developing and maintaining industrial production with the aim to create a new sustainable system from such perspective.
Ute till havs finns det massvis med regler som kontrollerar vilka utsläpp fartygen får göra. Dock finns det ingen tydlig metod för hur den här informationen ska samlas in av kryssningsföretag. Ett företag, Holland America Group, har skapat en matris där de lagrar information om utsläpp för alla områden till havs, vilket sker manuellt av de som arbetar med matrisen. I och med att miljöregler har skärpts samtidigt som regler differentierats för allt fler områden, har matrisens omfattning vuxit enormt och gjort arbetet med matrisen omständigt. Projektets mål är att undersöka hur informationen i matrisen presenteras för användaren. Målsättningen är att hitta alternativa, mer effektiva sätt att arbeta med informationen som finns i matrisen för att minska uppgiftens tid samtidigt som man förebygger olovliga utsläpp från fartygen. Det stora problemet är hur informationen i matrisen ska presenteras. I dagsläget finns informationen i en Excel-fil vars storlek har vuxit omfattande vilket har bidragit till att matrisen är svår att hantera. Ett lösningsförslag om ett planeringsverktyg har tagits fram med två olika utformningar, en som är app-inspirerad och en som är inspirerad av traditionella datorprogram. Arbetsprocessen och lösningsförslag är främst baserade på koncept och teori från perspektiv ur industriell teknik och hållbarhet. De lösningsförslag som ges motiveras med hjälp av metoder som vanligtvis används i skapande, utvecklande och underhåll inom industri med målet att skapa ett nytt hållbart system sett ur ett sådant perspektiv.

Digital Tranformation is a fundamental concept that should be studied in order to comprehend better how companies work and adapt to change and how consumers react and behave. Digital Era is characterized by innovation, growth, fast development and disruption. Companies that want to remain competitive and survive must be able to adapt to the digital world and also stimulate innovation itself. For some companies, it is easier to embrace digitalization and digital transformation, but for others it is more challenging. This paper aims to investigate the barriers to digital transformation and to understand what drives the adoption of it by Italian firms in the Fashion field. In particular, we will focus on the use of E- commerce and Social Media. They represent an important issue that needs to be explored in today’s business world. It allows companies to connect in a new way with customers and to gain a more competitive advantage. Most researches focus on them from the consumer’s perspective, there are very little empirical studies that consider this argument analyzing the firm’s point of view. The purpose of this paper is thus to review the academic literature on factors that drive the adoption of E-commerce and Social Media by Italian firms in the fashion field and examine if the use of Social Media Marketing (SMM) and e-commerce affect in a positive way firms ‘performances. This research will try to answer these key questions: (1) What is the Impact of Digital Transformation on company’s performances? (2) What are the barriers to Digital Transformation? Abstract Background – The existing literature on digitalization in the food industry is limited. Meanwhile, the literature suggests that digitalization is an issue that is unavoidable at some point in all industries and that companies must adapt in order to maintain their competitive position. In the food industry, large investments into digital projects are currently focusing on e-commerce, even though it merely stands for 2% of the sales. It could, therefore, be seen as digitalization is only about to start affecting the food industry and thus, exploring how it has affected and what it might mean for the actors in the industry is interesting.   Purpose – The purpose of this thesis is to explore how digitalization affects the food industry in Sweden. The purpose is fulfilled through the answering of two research questions; How is digitalization viewed upon in the food industry in Sweden? And How does the digitalization affect the food industry in Sweden? Through the fulfilment of the purpose, this thesis helps to fill a gap in the existing literature about the subject.   Method – The study is a qualitative study of digitalization in the food industry and includes insights from 13 individuals working in the food industry in Sweden. As the subject does not have any existing theories and there is limited literature on the subject, the study uses an inductive approach where the data is analysed through a thematic analysis in order to be able to derive a conclusion about the subject.   Findings – When concluding this study, it was found that the food industry is lagging behind other industries in terms of digitalization, which in the food industry is closely connected to e-commerce for many. There are several enormous challenges that the industry is facing, and one of the most significant challenges and also a resistance to digitalization in the food industry is profitability. This means that the industry actors have a hard time maintaining profitability when implementing digital solutions, mainly e-commerce solutions. Opportunities are present to solve the challenges of mainly; deliveries and thus finding a solution to the profitability issue.

Studien är en kritisk utbildningsvetenskaplig studie med syfte att på övergripande plan undersöka vilka maktrelationer som reproduceras av det språkbruk som används i policydokument rörande digitalisering i förskolan. Syftet är också att visa vilka effekter digitaliseringen i förskolan kan ge för framtiden och att synliggöra dominerande diskurser i de analyserade dokumenten. Genom att synliggöra forskning om digitaliseringens effekter från olika vetenskapliga fält har både positiva och negativa aspekter lyfts fram. Med hjälp av en diskursanalytisk metod har dokument från Sveriges kommuner och Regioner (SKR), Digitaliseringsrådet och branschorganisationen Swedish Edtech Industry närlästs. Vald analysmetod för studien är inspirerad av diskursanalys. Studien visar hur ett antal policydokument beskriver Sveriges vision av en framtida arbetsmarknad och Sverige som internationellt framgångsrikt inom digitalisering. Med hjälp av den diskursanalytiska ansatsen framträder att språket kring fenomenet digitalisering har naturaliserats till att beskrivas som framtidens samhällslösning. Studien har också visat hur digitaliseringsdiskursen inom det svenska skolväsendet påverkas av privata aktörer. Studien tyder på att förskolan kan ha brister i sin målsättning att bedriva verksamheten på vetenskaplig grund, då den vetenskapliga grunden endast hämtas från utbildningsvetenskapliga studier och inte tar forskning från andra fält i beaktning.

With changing market demands such as individualization, volatility and sustainability, the current manufacturing environment at Scania is subject to an increasing need for change. This, together with the availability of more advanced technology and digitalization has sparked the fourth industrial revolution. It has been named Industry 4.0 and considers digitalization in a manufacturing environment. As a result, the purpose of this thesis is to outline the potential of increased digitalization for logistics and manufacturing at Scania Oskarshamn. This will be done by developing a digitalization strategy that encapsulates the core of Industry 4.0 and a roadmap to guide Scania in their development towards a future digitalized manufacturing environment. The study will consider two core functions of Industry 4.0 as the cornerstones of digitalization; consciousness and interoperability. Consciousness focuses on the level of digitalization within the system. With interoperability, integration throughout the whole supply chain and how it relates to the manufacturing environment. As a result, the study is separated into three main parts: Scania today, Scania 2030 and the gap in-between. For all three parts, three areas of focus will be the basis for the analysis. First, the level of digitalization will be analyzed. This is done in regards to the first core function, consciousness. Second, the level of process maturity will be analyzed. This is done in regards to the second core function, interoperability. Third, synergies between logistics and manufacturing will be analyzed. From the conducted analysis of the current state at Scania, the 2030 scenario and the gap inbetween, the digitalization strategy for Scania focuses on the two identified functions. Three key steps has been developed for each function.

The digital reality is within this current moment debated and something that affects people. Upcoming years in real estate in general, it will be crucial of developments within the industry concerning digital solutions. The processes, business and approaches that have affected an industry for a very long time are changing in its foundations. Owning a property or managing an object in the coming years in an increasingly digitized world will bring new types of demands on organizations that intend to participate in the development. For a long time, digitization has existed as a concept seeming exciting and interesting. Smart devices have taken a larger part of time through telephones, televisions and likewise. Banking processes have evolved through phones and other digital tools to provide new variations of banking services. Airports have developed digital check-in services, which mean that you are actually virtually on the plane before you arrive at the airport. The development of these banking and tourism services changes the market and companies have been able to take part of the market by providing new solutions.  In development and innovation, there is a term used repeatedly, the idea of a “disruptive innovation”. More explicitly, a new innovation that destroys the previously functioning market. As a concrete example, the previously well-functioning camera - today largely exchanged for the digital camera. Or the previously mentioned development of banks and flight processes. It has previously been functioning markets, however, these new processes and innovations have eliminated earlier working solutions by performing better.   The study investigates possibilities closer if there are potential "disruptive innovations" in facility management and digital key control. The thesis has been focusing on the consequences of digital keys by using a model to analyse the impact on work in a future process. The physical key is one of the most ancient innovations that have been refined and developed over the centuries. With the new digital reality, it may be possible to find a new process that create better functions.
Kommande år i fastighetsförvaltning i allmänhet kommer det att vara avgörande för utvecklingen inom industrin med digitala lösningar. De processer, affärer och tillvägagångssätt som har påverkat en bransch under en mycket lång tid är på väg att förändras i grunden. Äga en fastighet eller förvalta ett objekt de närmaste åren i en alltmer digitaliserad värld kommer att medföra nya typer av krav på organisationer som avser att delta i utvecklingen och vara aktuell på marknaden. Under lång tid har digitalisering funnits som ett koncept som synes spännande och intressant. Smarta enheter har tagit en större del av tiden via telefoner, tv-apparater och liknande. Bankprocesser har utvecklats genom telefoner och andra digitala verktyg för att ge nya variationer av banktjänster. Flygplatser har utvecklat digitala incheckningstjänster, vilket innebär att du faktiskt är på planet innan du kommer till flygplatsen. Utvecklingen av dessa bank- och turismtjänster förändrar marknaden och företagen har kunnat ta del av marknaden genom att erbjuda nya lösningar. Inom utveckling och innovation finns det ett begrepp vilket används återkommande, en idé om en ”disruptive innovation”. Mer explicit, att en ny innovation förstör den tidigare fungerande marknaden, där det konkreta exemplet är den tidigare väl fungerande kameran vilken idag i stor omfattning är utbytt till den digitala kameran. Eller den tidigare nämnda utvecklingen av bank och flygprocesser. Det har tidigare varit fungerande marknader, dock har nya processer och innovationer slagit ut tidigare fungerande lösningar.  I det här arbetet har möjligheterna undersökts närmre ifall det går att finna potentiella ”disruptive innovations” inom fastighetsförvaltning. Den fysiska nyckeln är en utav de mest antika innovationerna som genom årtusenden och århundranden har förfinats och utvecklats. Med den nya digitala verkligheten kan det vara möjligt att finna en ny process vilken fungerar på ett bättre sätt.

Digital transformation is one of the most important and complex issues that company management is facing nowadays. It is considered as the fourth phase of a long and ongoing journey started in 1700 that has allowed the development of the current business environment. it is characterized by the deployment of brand new and advanced technologies, such as robotics, Additive Manufacturing, Cloud Computing, Internet of Things and Big Data into business processes. This thesis investigates how the phenomenon of digitalization has been applied to supply chains and how the introduction of 4.0 technologies have influenced both comapnies’ internal structures and processes and other economic actors, such as consumers and workers. Digital technologies in fact ensure the creation of strong collaborative relationships among all members of the supply chain, whose operations become always more and more integrated with each other. The effects that digitalization has are positive for companies, workers, consumers and global value chains in general, because they guarantee higher productivity and quality of products and services offered. This helps them to be able to better satisfy client’s expectations by outperforming competitors and therefore build solid loyal costumer realtionships. However as every kind of transformation it does not come without costs. Its disruptive pace is forcing companies to rapidly model and reprogramm their structures and processes in order to be able not to be left behind by competitors and taking the risk of being excluded by the market. Moreover this urgency may expose firms to the complex problem of cybersecurity, that has been emerging simoultaneously with the kick off of this digital transition. The great reliance on digital platforms has displayed companies to various risks related to the security of information shared and uploaded and the protection of sensitive data about employees, suppliers, clients and production processes and techniques. It is therefore important that companies create a safety net in which they are free to carry out their transformation toward a fully digitalized supply chain in order to ensure that benefits for all its members will outweigh challenges, guaranteeing better performances, higher profitability and market share.

Healthcare around the world is facing strenuous times, whereby there is a need for reduced costs, improved efficiency, and effectiveness. Digitalization is a transformational phenomenon argued to solve the many problems of healthcare. As of such, this thesis studies digitalization in a healthcare setting - considering how digitalization is achieved in practice, and what elements hamper and enable sociotechnical changes required for digitalization. To study these aspects, a qualitative case study was carried out on the recently implemented mandatory electronic dental card among the dental care professionals from a Baltic country. The study allowed contributions to digitalization research by looking at the phenomenon from industry-level analysis, also revealed the elements that hamper and enable digitalization, outlined the different digitalization patterns, and argued that digitalization relies on the extent by which the new system provides value to the users without interfering with professional expertise and ethics.

Background and problem: The technological development in recent times has created new norms for daily life. Therefore, the public sector is currently going through a process of digitalization to meet the needs of modern citizens. However, the process has proven to be extremely challenging for municipalities across the nation. As studies have shown there are significant differences between municipalities regarding their efforts related to digitalization. Purpose: The purpose of this study is to develop an understanding of how municipalities are working on digitalization and why there are significant differences between them. Furthermore, the study aims to gain knowledge about the organizational structures, strategies and solutions that have been implemented by municipalities to achieve their objective. Method: To fulfil the purpose of the study, a comparative case study of two separate municipalities has been conducted. Furthermore, two additional departments with each respective municipality have been included to provide additional depth and variation in this study. The empirical information has been collected through semi-conducted interviews and public documents. Conclusions: Digitalization in municipalities is an on-going process, which is complicated in its nature since it represents enormous organizational changes. In order to deal with the challenges of digitalising, municipalities in both cases in this study have developed their own strategies, which are based on an translation of the national strategy for digitalization. Furthermore, both municipalities have created similar organizational structures to lead the process of digitalization. However, it has been concluded in this study that digitalization of municipalities is largely driven by individual enthusiasm, instead of formal structures. There are certain additional factors, which affect digitalization in both municipalities and ultimately create differences between them, these factors include – organizational history and maturity, degree of centralisation, resources, decision-making and trust amongst decision-makers.

Mobile technology has developed rapidly in the recent years and considerably changed the way organizations work. Mobility can bring great benefits to the organizations of which they are at, by e.g. improving employee satisfaction and increase efficiency and productivity. Despite this the development of mobile solutions have grown much faster for individuals than for organizations, with a plethora of devices and applications. The slow enterprise adoption is partly due to the fact that companies need to take information security risks into account at the same time as IT systems need to be rebuilt and customized to accommodate the new mobile way of working. Employees, unlike most other technologies, largely drive mobile strategies at organizations. Organizations are not developing in a fast enough pace and many scientist are describing a research gap in organizations adoption of mobility. This study aims to examine how research in the area has been presented and how enterprise mobility is viewed and utilized. The study has been implemented through qualitative research with a interpretative and exploratory approach. A case study was conducted at two organizations, demonstrating the possibilities and obstacles of enterprise mobility, and also strengthened the existing definition of the field. Additionally the case study illustrated discrepancies in IT solutions and the adoption of enterprise mobility within two different industries. Both researchers and organizations have shown a great interest in exploring this area additionally. Further studies can be extended to include the effects of how companies have adapted to enterprise mobility.
Den mobila teknologin har utvecklats i snabb takt under de senaste åren och således förändrat organisationers sätt att arbeta. Mobilitet kan möjliggöra för organisationer att t.ex. förbättra de anställdas tillfredsställelse, öka effektiviteten och produktiviteten, samt minimera kostnader. Trots den snabba utveckling av såväl mobila lösningar som mobila enheter, så har utvecklingen gått betydligt snabbare för privatpersoner än för organisationer. Detta kan delvis förklaras av det faktum att organisationer, i större utsträckning än privatpersoner, måste ta hänsyn till de säkerhetsrisker som mobilt arbete kan medföra. Det kan också förklaras av att många IT-system kräver vidareutveckling och anpassning för att kunna möta det nya mobila sättet att arbeta. Att organisationer inte utvecklas i tillräcklig snabb takt ligger till grund för att många forskare beskriver att det finns ett forskningsgap i organisationers antagande av mobilitet. Denna studie syftar därför till att undersöka hur begreppet enterprise mobility presenteras i tidigare forskning samt hur det uppfattas och tillämpas bland anställda. Studien har använt en kvalitativ forskningsansats med ett undersökande och tolkande förhållningssätt. En fallstudie har genomförts på två olika organisationer för att identifiera möjligheter och utmaningar med enterprise mobility, men också för att stärka den befintliga definitionen av begreppet. Fallstudien presenterar också skillnader i anpassade IT-lösningar och antagandet av mobilitet inom två olika branscher. Både forskare och organisationer har uttryckt ett stort intresse av att utforska detta område ytterligare. Denna studie ligger till grund för att senare undersöka effekterna av hur företagen har anpassat sig till enterprise mobility.

Abstract. There is strong evidence that digitalisation offers the ability to improve or upsurge the productivity and change of information along the whole construction industry supply chain. The main purpose for this research project is to develop ways for the case company to connect its laser distance meters (LDMs) with an existing 3rd party app vendor or self-developed mobile applications to help penetrate the construction trades and respond to customer needs. The research project also represents the major pain-point of customers towards the use of existing mobile applications which support measuring in construction industries. It also aims at finding out whether measurement and data sharing in conventional methods are still used in the construction industry, and to explore the most relevant apps for each construction trade. To achieve the research objectives, key construction trade such as (Building Construction (BC), General contractors or Interior Finishing (IF), doors and windows industries or Steel Metal (SM), architecture metal and facade or Mechanical and Electrical (ME) were analysed constructed on the most relevant measuring application. Mobile apps used by construction professionals were clustered and assessed based on the correlation between app descriptions, price, rating, and popularity details from the App Store and the survey conducted and evaluated in their measuring functions. The results of this study lead to the fact that collaborating with key app developers will help to expand services and offering in the construction industry especially in the laser distance meter hardware. Due to that, it will be important to explore the existing trend towards mobile applications which support measuring applications in the construction industry.

Cette thèse de doctorat étudie les effets de la digitalisation sur le développement économique en Afrique. Elle contribue à l’analyse empirique des effets de l’adoption des technologies digitales sur l’inclusion financière et le développement économique. Dans le chapitre 2, nous étudions les impacts de la digitalisation des services financiers sur l’inclusion financière en Afrique. Les résultats montrent que l’argent mobile et les paiements digitaux ont un impact positif et significatif sur le taux de bancarisation, l’accès aux crédits et la mobilisation de l’épargne. Le chapitre 3 est une extension du premier chapitre sur l’inclusion financière. Nous analysons empiriquement les effets de l’utilisation des TIC sur l’accès aux crédits des entreprises en Afrique Subsaharienne (ASS). D’une part, les résultats montrent que la souscription à la téléphonie mobile, la souscription à l’internet de haut débit et l’utilisation individuelle de l’internet ont des effets positifs sur le crédit accordé au secteur privé. D’autre part, les résultats révèlent aussi que la souscription à la téléphonie mobile, l’accès à internet et l’utilisation de l’internet sont associés à une hausse des prêts bancaires en Afrique. Le chapitre 4 explore l’impactempirique de l’adoption des TIC sur les échanges commerciaux entre les pays de l’ASS entre 2000 et 2018. Les résultats suggèrent que l’utilisation des TIC, en particulier l’utilisation de l’internet, a des effets positifs et significatifs sur les exportations et des effets négatifs sur les importations de produits primaires et le total de biens. Dans le cadre de l’accord de libre-échange adopté par l’Union Africaine, ce chapitre montre la place à accorder aux outils digitaux dans la réussite de cet instrument important. Enfin, dans le chapitre 5 nous évaluons l’impact de l’adoption de la monnaie mobile sur l’inflation et la croissance économique en Afrique à travers un modèle de double différences (DiD). Les résultats montrent que la monnaie mobile facilite la circulation de l’argent, stimulant ainsi l’activité économique, mais sans provoquer une hausse incontrôlée de l’inflation. Ils révèlent également que l’adoption de la monnaie mobile contribue à la croissance économique des pays ayant adopté la monnaie mobile
This doctoral thesis examines the effects of digitalization on economic development in Africa. It contributes to the empirical analysis of the effects of digital technologies adoption on financial inclusion and economic development. In Chapter 2, we investigate the impacts of the digitalization of financial services on financial inclusion in Africa. The results indicate that mobile money and digital payments have a positive and significant impact on banking rates, access to credit, and savings mobilization. Chapter 3 is an extension of the first chapter on financial inclusion. We empirically analyze the effects of ICT usage on business credit access in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). On one hand, the results show that mobile phone subscription, fixed broadband subscription, and individual internet usage have positive effects on credit granted to the private sector. On the other hand, the results also reveal that mobile phone subscription, internet access, and internet usage are associated with the increase in bank loans in Africa. Chapter 4 explores the empirical impact of ICT adoption on trade between SSA countries from 2000 to 2018. The results suggest that ICT usage, especially Internet usage, has positive and significant effects on exports and negative effects on imports of primary products and the total of goods. Within the framework of the free trade agreement adopted by the African Union, this chapter demonstrates the role of digital tools in the success of this important instrument. Finally, in Chapter 5, we assess theimpact of mobile money adoption on inflation and economic growth in Africa through a Difference-in-Differences (DiD) model. The results show that mobile money facilitates money circulation, thereby stimulating economic activity without causing an uncontrolled increase in inflation. They also reveal that the adoption of mobile money contributes to the economic growth of countries that have adopted it

A fourth industrial revolution (Industry 4.0) is on the horizon. It is enabled by advancements in information and communication technologies (i.e. digitalization) and concepts such as the Internet of Things and cyber-physical systems. Industry 4.0 is expected to have great impact on the manufacturing and process industries, changing how products are developed, produced and sold. However, Industry 4.0 is a novel concept and its impacts are still uncertain. An increasingly strict climate and energy agenda in Sweden is putting pressure on the industrial sector and it is, therefore, important that the sector exploits the full potential Industry 4.0 can provide for increased sustainability. This thesis examines the status of digitalization in the Swedish energy intensive industries (i.e. pulp and paper, steel, and chemical industries) and how it could impact energy efficiency in the sector. Qualitative research methods were used to carry out the study. A literature review and in-depth interviews with employees within the industries were conducted. The results show that, while digitalization is considered important for the future competitiveness of the Swedish energy intensive industries, the digital maturity of the sector is not considered high. Digital technologies can increase energy efficiency in a number of different ways (e.g. through better optimization tools, increased availability of processes and more efficient maintenance management). However, there is not a clear link between digital strategies and energy efficiency measures in the energy intensive industries in Sweden. Moreover, energy efficiency is not considered the main driver for implementing digital technologies, it is rather considered a positive side effect. To accelerate the implementation of digital technologies it is important to support further research in this area and encourage a closer cooperation between stakeholders as well as mitigating challenges such as uncertainty regarding return on investment and issues related to data security and ownership.
Industrin är på väg in i en fjärde industriell revolution (Industri 4.0). Revolutionen möjliggörs av framsteg inom informations- och kommunikationsteknologier (digitalisering) och koncept som internet av saker och cyberfysiska system. Industri 4.0 förväntas ha en stor påverkan på tillverknings- och processindustrin, vilket kommer att förändra hur produkter utvecklas, produceras och säljs. Industri 4.0 är dock ett nytt koncept och dess effekter är fortfarande osäkra. I samband med att en allt strängare klimat- och energiagenda i Sverige sätter press på industrisektorn, är det viktigt att sektorn utnyttjar den fulla potentialen som Industri 4.0 kan bidrag med för en ökad hållbarhet. Det här examensarbetet analyserar det nuvarande läget för digitalisering inom de svenska energiintensiva industrierna (dvs. massa och pappers-, stål- och kemisk industrin) och hur det kan påverka energieffektiviteten i sektorn. Studien genomfördes med hjälp av kvalitativa forksningsmetoder. En litteraturstudie och fördjupade intervjuer med anställda inom branscherna genomfördes. Resultaten visar att trots att digitalisering anses vara viktig för de svenska energiintensiva industriernas framtida konkurrenskraft, anses sektorns digitala mognad inte vara hög. Digital teknik kan öka energieffektiviteten på ett antal olika sätt (t.ex. genom bättre optimeringsverktyg, ökad tillgänglighet av processer och effektivare underhållshantering). Det finns dock ingen tydlig koppling mellan digitala strategier och energieffektivitetsåtgärder i de energiintensiva industrierna i Sverige. Dessutom anses energieffektivitet inte vara den främsta drivkraften för att implementera digitala teknologier, utan anses snarare vara en positiv bieffekt. För att påskynda implementeringen av digital teknik är det viktigt att fortsätta stötta forskningen inom området och uppmuntra till ett närmare samarbete mellan olika aktörer samt bemöta utmaningar som osäkerheten kring framtida avkastningar på investeringar och frågor relaterade till datasäkerhet och ägande.

Background: In various industries, market power is concentrated on a few major companies, which makes competition increasingly challenging for small and medium-sized enterprises. Those SMEs are furthermore impacted by the characteristics of their industry and need to change constantly and adapt to maintain competitive in this challenging market environment. The IT sector is characterized by a high degree of digitalization, quickly changing customer needs, and short lifecycles. Thus, many IT firms apply agile working methods, increase working in teams, and use different digital tools and applications. In many cases, those adjustments also impact the organizational structure of the firm and require a change in management. Purpose: In the context of a medium-sized IT firm, this study aims to evaluate the effects of digitalization on management innovation in project teams. Method: To gain a deep understanding of the researched topic, we chose a qualitative interview-based study. We collected the data for this single-case study in semi-structured interviews and applied purposeful sampling (theory based). For the data analysis, we used content analysis (open code; grouping; categorization). Conclusion: We developed a framework describing the influence of digitalization on management innovation in six dimensions, which emerged in the study. Those dimensions are project teams, virtual teams, communication & collaboration, trust, technology, as well as leadership & management. Digitalization strongly influences management innovations in all six identified fields. Digitalization, management innovation, and the respective field are interdependent. In our case, we found that digitalization acts as an enabler or simplifier for management innovation in all six dimensions.

In the last couple of decades, global filmmaking companies, especially those which operate in Hollywood, face a significant change due to the convergence of western and eastern movie industries. It is well-established now that the industry giant and leader, United States, faces great competition from the East, specifically from China. The digitalization of the world, which is one of the main reasons of the mentioned convergence and increasing competition, transformed the industry by revealing new business and strategy concepts, thus, forced production companies act differently. This study aims to determine how those changes exactly happened in the global filmmaking industry and what the consequences might be down the line. Additionally, it investigates what kind of roles organization design, innovation, branding and communication had and have in the production companies in order to have an impact on the industry and how those attributes affect the quality of final products (movies) as well. The study adopts both quantitative and qualitative research methods. For qualitative research method, narrative approach and case studies about the related companies and individuals are mainly considered. Quantitative research, mainly secondary one, is included in order to better understand the essence of the given topics and have better overview of the issues presented in the study.

Efficient digitization and long-term digital archiving of printed newspapers are building blocks that contribute towards the creation and maintenance of a collective memory for news media. Due to the large volume of digitized files per newspaper, there is a demand for their structured digitization, tool support, and integration with digital long-term archives. However, the state-of-the-art in digitization of newspapers with the open source tools like Kitodo.Production lacks support for structuring digitization processes. Such structures are necessary to make large scale projects with thousands of newspaper edition manageable and to enable a proper integration with long-term digital archives and presentation systems. Within this work, we analyze the existing problems and pitfalls of digitizing newspapers with the Kitodo.Production and propose a concept that supports flexibly structured digitization processes.

The trend of digitalization in the global dimension is obvious. This process is the basis for a new stage of ""technological"" race, which should result in geopolitical and geoeconomic leadership. At the same time, it is a chance for both developed and developing countries to improve their national socio-economic situation. Today, the main agenda for most countries in the world is digital transformation and the creation of a competitive digital economy. The article considers what place Ukraine occupies in the conditions of digitalization, what trends follow digitalization and what are the main risks and advantages of digitalization development for Ukraine.

The effect on the Swedish inhabitants has been impactful, especially for elders, who are crippled in the ability to complete necessary tasks including private banking. Many elderlies are struggling with online banking and similar fintech services, so when the rest of the population resort to digital means of conducting bank errands, what are banks doing to smoothen the transition for elders? Research purpose The research purpose is to explore how commercial banks are bridging the digital divide between information technology and the senior customers and further how the immediate crisis complicates this. The thesis will explore the practical efforts toward smoothening the transition between an increasingly more digitalized bank sector and the older generations. Additionally, to provide insight to how the covid-19 pandemic influences commercial banking and what trends are following. Theoretical framework The theoretical framework has been modeled around five concepts relating to digitalization: Digital divide, the bell doctrine, E-banking, The profitability of traditional vs. modern banking and E-CRM. The theoretical framework is presented in full extent in its own section. Methodology A qualitative method is applied with emphasis on narrative inquiries collected through semiconstructed interviews. Empirical findings The findings are presented as thematic extracts from the interviews, anchored in the theoretical framework, consisting of primary data from five participants from four separate banks in the Umeå region, Sweden. Conclusion The local banks have been very successful in providing their non-digital customers with their services by being flexible and offering a broad range of channels through which the customer can interact with the bank. For the most part, the banks themselves remain largely unaffected by the crisis. Naturally, there are a few customers who still resist, or do not possess the ability to utilize the digital tools that has become the primary way banking matters are conducted at this time. Additionally, it is possible that the outcome of the crisis will have resulted in an increasingly higher rate of adaptation of digital banking, hence making the traditional business model more difficult to operate post-crisis.

Abstract. The Paris climate agreement obligate energy and power sector to reduce greenhouse gasses even though at the same time the global power demand increases. This leads to need to increase emission-free power generation with renewable energy sources (RES). Wind- and solar power technologies have developed significantly and price of power generated by them has decreased clearly in recent years. These factors have led to large-scale installations globally. However transitioning towards RES, such as wind and solar power, poses a challenge, since supply and demand in the electric power system must be equal at all times, but wind- and solar power are non-adjustable. These factors leads to need of finding flexibility from elsewhere e.g. from demand side, but also from storage systems. Purpose of this thesis is to analyze electric power system’s flexibility and how it can be increased by employing digital technologies including artificial intelligence (AI). This research was done by using qualitative conceptual research method, where data is collected until saturation point is reached. Data was collected from scientific journals and relevant sources to form conceptual understanding of current state and future possibilities. With digital technologies and artificial intelligence, companies can create new types of products, services and business models, which create more value for the customer. At the same time, these new solutions can improve the electric power system and create needed flexibility. The thesis studied these novel solutions and discussed practical implementation of three example cases in more detail. Tämä johtaa tarpeeseen lisätä päästötöntä sähköntuotantoa uusiutuvilla energialähteillä. Tuuli- ja aurinkovoimateknologiat ovat kehittyneet ja niillä tuotetun sähkön hinta on laskenut selvästi viime vuosina. Nämä seikat ovat johtaneet niiden laajamittaiseen käyttöönottoon maailmanlaajuisesti. Siirtyminen näihin energiamuotoihin tuottaa haasteita sähköjärjestelmälle, sillä sähköjärjestelmässä tuotannon ja kulutuksen tulee olla tasapainossa koko ajan, mutta tuuli- aurinkovoiman sähköntuotantoa ei pystytä säätämään. Nämä seikat ovat johtaneet tarpeeseen löytää joustavuutta sähköjärjestelmän muista osista mm. kysynnästä, mutta myös varastoinnista. The purpose of this research is to get a better understanding of new technology-based recruiting approaches, with an emphasis on how they are used by recruiters and how the chances and hazards that these new technical solutions present in recruiting processes are experienced. The function of video interviews in the recruiting process will be examined in further detail. With the introduction of new innovative technology, the recruiting process is undergoing changes. Video is a media that is used to deliver additional information to both job seekers and enterprises throughout the recruiting process. In this paper, the use of video tools in job adverts and recruitment marketing, video résumés, video interviews, rejection letters, and onboarding will be investigated, as well as the implications of future technology and regulation on the use of video in recruiting. Concerns about the validity and acceptability of video tools have arisen as a relatively new technique in recruiting. The goal of the study is to develop reasons for the advantages and concerns that should be considered before opting to incorporate these in a company’s recruitment process. The future potential of technology-based recruiting will also be investigated. Its use of tech in recruiting techniques is becoming increasingly commonplace among businesses. With new technology enabling rapid, effective, and cost- effective means of locating potential employees, recruiting as a whole has undergone a significant transformation. Organizations have been gathering large volumes of data for years, and they’re still able to gain real value from big data and artificial intelligence. The data for the study will be gathered through interviews with several recruiting specialists that operate in the field on a regular basis. Abstract:
The purpose of this degree project is to analyze and investigate how digitalization will affect business modeling in the district heating business. The chosen approach to this degree project was an iterative, abductive method, in order to always use a feedback-analysis and to keep the project open for new findings. The interviews were a mix of a structured method and a qualitative approach. With the structured method, the findings from the interviews were similar and regarding the research topic, and the qualitative approach in some open questions led to matters that otherwise would have been unnoticed. The interviews were performed via e-mail, phone and through personal interviews. This degree project concluded that digitalization has an impact on business modeling in district heating. Digitalization will affect some elements in a major way, for example key resources that will be characterized by digitalization. The findings from this work showed that a business model operating in district heating in a time of digitalization should focus on three main parts: economy, environment and easy visualization. An optimization tool should focus on delivering a value that consist of these three, and the remaining elements should together contribute to that value proposition.
Syftet med detta examensarbete är att analysera och undersöka hur digitaliseringen kommer att påverka affärsmodellering inom fjärrvärmebranschen. Det valda tillvägagångssättet för detta examensarbete är en iterativ, abduktiv metod för att hela tiden återkoppla och hålla studien öppen för nya intryck. Intervjuerna är en kombination av strukturerad metod blandad med en kvalitativ ansats. Med den strukturerade metoden blir svaren inom samma ram samtidigt som den kvalitativa aspekten lockar fram svar som annars skulle passera obemärkta. Intervjuerna genomfördes via mail, telefon samt genom personliga intervjuer. Detta examensarbete drar slutsatsen att digitaliseringen kommer påverka affärsmodeller inom fjärrvärme. Digitaliseringen kommer påverka vissa element i större utsträckning som till exempel nyckelresurserser som kommer präglas av digitaliseringen. Upptäckterna från studien visar att en affärsmodell verksam inom fjärrvärme i en tid präglad av digitaliseringen ska fokusera på tre delar: ekonomi, miljö och lättförstådd visualisering. Ett optimeringsverktyg ska fokusera på att leverera ett värde som innehåller dem tre delarna och resterande element ska tillsammans bidra till det värdeerbjudandet.

The collected data was handled in thematic analysis and inspired by coding.  The study’s main conclusion was the discovering of a new value co- creation mechanism defined as relationship and learning.

The emergence of digital technology represents a paradigmatic historical shift. As a process transforming sociotechnical structures, digitalization has had pervasive effects on organizing structures and business logics, as well as contemporary society as a whole. In recent years, these effects have been particularly salient in the content-based (e.g. music and imaging), and most recently the print-media (e.g. newspapers and magazines) industries. Facing dramatically declining sales of print media products, publishers have sought to leverage digital technology for innovation. However, the digital revenues still do not yet typically compensate for the decline in print media sales. This thesis explores the organizational implications of digitalization in the media domain. Scholars have increasingly stressed that digital technology has some distinct characteristics that have fundamental implications for innovation. This thesis examines aspects of these implications that have been far from fully explored, including the roles of digital technologies as enablers of process innovation (new methods, procedures or responsibilities), product innovation outcomes (which shift or expand an organization's domain) and associated changes in organizational cognition and identity. The thesis is based on four empirical investigations, reported in appended papers, of the evolution of digital platforms, the new content creation practices they enable, and how traditional print media firms have sought to innovate and reorient themselves in relation to these novel phenomena. The composite analysis illustrates how the distinct characteristics of digital technologies are complicit in transitions from stable to fragile product categories, highlights the need for a dynamic approach to identity orientation, and discusses and proposes key concerns in scholarly studies of digital innovation in organizations based on insights generated by the underlying studies.

The purpose of this thesis is to explore how managers' practices are transforming in the digital era. This is done by looking at how digitalization is changing managerial practices as experienced by managers. The data was collected by conducting five semi-structured online interviews and three structured email interviews with managers working at Ericsson's headquarter office in Stockholm. The collected data were analyzed using a thematic analysis approach which resulted in five themes: work and communication in the digital environment, training and learning, information and data, other effects of digitalization, and additional findings. This study concludes that notable changes in managerial practices can be observed in all four categories of practices: task-oriented, relations-oriented, change-oriented, and external practices. This shows that digitalization is a process that transforms managerial practices and it does it both by aiding managers in their tasks and by making some tasks more difficult. Thus, managers need to be more aware and able to adapt to these changes that digitalization brings to their practices.

Progress in digital technologies has influenced organizations and individuals alike. The focus of organizations has been to adapt to the dynamic digital landscapes; ranging from expanding the boundaries of existing markets, to conquer unexplored and unclaimed opportunities. These include collaboration in novel partnerships with external actors, creating additional value through alternative use of existing technologies and services, provided to the customer in the growing digitally interconnected ecosystem. The purpose of this work is to explore contemporary consultant’s experiences related to the digitalization of their client organizations. Which major factors, in their experience, increase the success rate of digitalization or digital transformation projects, and which factors form the greatest risks? In order to answer the research questions and thereby fulfill the purpose, a case study was performed, where eleven semi-structured interviews were conducted with consultants from two firms. A thematic analysis was conducted, and the results were presented in the more general topics Perspectives on change, Change management, User involvement, Digital maturity, and Cultural aspects. These adaptations made by organizations need to be aligned with the overarching goals and values they may hold. In order for such an investment to stand a chance of being successful, support is needed from all levels of the organization. Both through the willingness to adapt, and suitability of the proposed investment. In order to provide support is through proper change management, with a specific focus on the human side of the planned change. If the implemented system or process is not being used, or not utilized as intended, the generated improvement will be less than expected. The digital strategy was argued to be of less use to the organization the less connected it was to the general strategic perspectives. The digital aspects described in such a document must be incorporated in the identity and culture of the organization to remain useful, they need to become part of their DNA.

Therefore, both investors and technology creators need to be aware of the firm characteristics and its need. On the other hand, employees or graduating students need to prepare themselves for the real competitive market and it is necessary for them to know which kind of skills they need to know and which knowledge they need to learn in order to be able to enter the job market. Consequently, universities as a place that have significant roles to educate and skilling students and make them ready for the real market need to keep the curriculum up to date and in line with the market demands. Abstract:
This thesis set out to investigate what motivates an established manufacturing firm to add smart and connectivity features into its products and what considerations are made when doing so. Such a firm was used as a case study object, a firm that is considering digitalization in one of its product areas but has not yet finalized the strategy on how to move forward. The qualitative study was made using semi-structured interviews which included mostly respondents from this organization, but also respondents representing the customers as small company entrepreneurs.  A literature study was conducted to better define the subject of product digitalization. Previous research on smart and connected products as well as related business and market theories were identified as relevant, as well as literature on digital transformation. Based on the literature study, a theoretical framework was formulated in the form of an iterative model on product digitalization, where the business and market mechanics are included. A qualitative case study was then conducted in the form of semi-structured interviews, with topics considered relevant based on the literature study. The empirical data shows many similarities compared to the current literature on the topic. The literature study has identified these aspects as relevant to be considered by an established manufacturing firm and compared them with the case study firm: ·       Digital vision – with clear intent and outcome for both the business and the customer ·       Customer intimacy – services related to smart and connected products will increase the intimacy to the end customer ·       Business model – product sales business model will be transformed by servitization ·       Technology content – smart and connected products need integration of new technologies, such as hardware, software and data management ·       Capabilities – necessary capabilities and the ability to integrate and coordinate these ·       Competitive strategy – using digital technology to gain competitive advantage.  ·       Technology acceptance –what technologies are accepted by the customers and why The case study shows that the firm have identified several key areas affected by product digitalization. Many of these aspects are considered when making strategic decisions, and the members of the organization are including most of them when building scenarios. One area of concern is the ability to integrate and coordinate all necessary functions, both for technology and services. Another is the switch in mindset going from a predictable product business model to a innovate digital one. Offering services will bring them into more direct contact with the customers, and possibly change the role of the dealership network.

Abstract:
Digital competence used to be a confusing concept, until recently when some researchers coined a comprehensive definition of digital competence and formulated a conceptual framework in an SME context. However, the framework was only at a conceptual level and required to be tested with the empirics of a qualitative or quantitative study. By an abductive qualitative approach, this research explored existing theories on digital competence and formulated a new digital competence framework in Swedish manufacturing SME perspective. Moreover, with cross-sectional study design, this research explored the role of digital competence in the internationalization process of six Swedish manufacturing firms, which is unprecedented in academic literature. Our findings indicate that digital competence is an evolving concept which develops gradually with technological advancements and requires a combination of three integral components: i) Digital technologies (basic and advanced level digitalization), ii) Automation of organizational processes, iii) Human resources who have the latest digital skills and are duly motivated to use these skills. This research affirms that after attaining digital competence Swedish manufacturing SMEs can sustain a competitive advantage in their international markets and it successfully facilitates in the firm’s internationalization process.
Digital kompetens brukade vara ett förvirrande koncept fram till nyligen när vissa forskare utarbetade en omfattande definition av digital kompetens och formulerade en konceptuell ram i ett små och medelstora sammanhang. Ramverket var dock endast på en konceptuell nivå och krävdes att testas med empiriken i en kvalitativ eller kvantitativ studie. Genom ett abduktivt kvalitativt tillvägagångssätt undersökte denna forskning befintliga teorier om digital kompetens och formulerade en ny digital kompetensram inom svenskt tillverkningspolitiskt perspektiv. Vidare undersökte denna undersökning rollen som digital kompetens i internationaliseringsprocessen av sex svenska tillverkningsföretag, vilket är enastående i den akademiska litteraturen. Våra resultat tyder på att digital kompetens är ett utvecklande koncept som utvecklas gradvis med tekniska framsteg och kräver en kombination av tre integrerade komponenter: i) Digital teknik (grundläggande och avancerad digitalisering), ii) Automatisering av organisationsprocesser, iii) Personal som har de senaste digitala färdigheterna och är vederbörligen motiverade att använda dessa färdigheter. Den här forskningen bekräftar att svenska tillverkare små och medelstora företag efter att ha uppnått digital kompetens kan upprätthålla en konkurrensfördel på sina internationella marknader och framgångsrikt underlättar företagets internationaliseringsprocess.

Abstract:
This research is based on the ongoing debate on the strengths and challenges brought about by the so-called ‘digital revolution’ in the field of the conservation of Cultural Built Heritage. Within this framework, this study analyses how the dynamic relationship between tangible and intangible heritage strongly affects the values of a site with consequent repercussions on the impacts of these values on conservation choices and actions. The complex relationships between tangible and intangible dimensions of cultural heritage have been, until recently, surprisingly underestimated in scientific research. A possible explanation lies in the limited amount of multidimensional and interdisciplinary approaches applied by scholars of different disciplines, often interested in more sectorial analysis of either the tangible or the intangible dimensions of cultural built heritage. The research moves in the direction of integrating such dimensions through a comprehensive approach. The project aims at demonstrating that an understanding of the role of intangible dimensions of built heritage can orient the conservation process, moving towards a more inclusive approach based on the respect for different context-based perspectives and interpretations of the cultural dimensions of heritage conservation, preservation and restoration.

Abstract:

Several industries have been affected by digitalization over the last decade. Currently the world of printed media is experiencing numerous turbulent changes. Printed newspapers are increasing their presence online and starting to compete in digital channels. This makes for an interesting area of research. With this study we hope to create a greater understanding for how the newspaper industry is affected by digital technology. The theoretical framework of this study is based upon Christensen’s (2005) concept of disruptive technology as well as Yoo & Lyytinen et al. (2010) theories on digitalization and digital innovation. We conducted a case study at the local newspaper Alpha News. Five semi- structured interviews were performed with different employees with various distinct roles; all of them important to obtain an insight into the changes occurring at Alpha News. In our study we are able to identify several aspects of changes due to digitalization within Alpha News. The printed newspaper, for instance, faces a steady decline in subscription rates due to the readers increased reliance on digital alternatives for local news. Other shown effects of the digitalized business where also revealed. The pace of change, the use of technological aids, as well as the reader-relationship, all act as examples of these shown effects.

Abstract:
This study is grounded in the evolving perspective of Service Marketing, Service-Dominant-Logic and ServiceLogic and aims to provide a holistic view of how the digitalization of interactions affects the service provided by the restaurant and in turn the customers’ value creation processes. More exactly, the study examines a digital system for information exchange, order placements and payments in a restaurant on the Swedish market. The study adopts a qualitative approach and data has been collected through the use of unstructured observations and semi-structured interviews. The findings are that the system for digital interactions has both positive and negative effects on valuecreation. It also changes other aspects of the service not directly linked to the system. If this ultimately creates more or less value for the customers is believed to depend on the customers’ individual differences, but if the system is used as a complement to the already existing service rather than as a substitute of the human interaction there are opportunities for a successful implementation.
