Abstract:
This paper sets out to investigate changes and individual irregularities in the Received Pronunciation of a number of individuals over time and to compare them with the changes noted in contemporary RP in the literature. The aim of the study is to ascertain whether accent change affects individuals during their lifetimes or is only brought about by new generations of speakers accepting different pronunciations as the norm and effectively speaking with a different accent to older generations within their social circle. The variations/changes looked for were: CLOTH transfer, CURE lowering, GOAT

In his Dimbleby Lecture in December 2002, the Archbishop of Canterbury examined the effect of the emergence of the market state on the legitimacy of government activity in areas of morality. He suggested that, while this is becoming limited, the continuing need to provide a moral context for social life provided an opportunity for religious communities to play a crucial role. This paper suggests that the increasing significance of market concepts in healthcare law poses a similar challenge to the moral basis of medical practice, threatening to drive moral argument outside the scope of the disc

Abstract:
Abstract Roy Jenkins’s 1979 Dimbleby Lecture, and the Limehouse Declaration of 1981, were greeted with great interest in Oxford, and perhaps especially in Balliol. In 1963, when I joined Balliol as a young don, I found a college with a mainly Labour SCR and a mildly Conservative JCR. By the end of the 1970s, when I had become Master, the JCR was home to many a Trotskyist and most of the SCR had lost patience with the Labour Party. No one was comfortable with Thatcherite conservatism, and by a number of the dons the creation of the SDP was warmly welcomed.

Abstract:
Abstract From the moment of its birth the SDP was widely dubbed ‘a media party’. Sometimes the phrase was used admiringly. More often it was used pejoratively. Those who used it pejoratively in some cases believed that the SDP was, literally, a media creation: that some combination of press barons and television higher-ups had first badgered the Gang of Four into leaving the Labour party and then ensured that the SDP, when it was launched, received a warm welcome. For example, in the view of the conspiracy theorists, the BBC had offered Roy Jenkins the platform of the Dimbleby Lecture knowing

The indignant tears of a child command attention. Daniel, aged eight, has just learned about the Brazilian rain forest and it has moved him to his first expression of political outrage. It is directed at me, not as his father, but as representative of the generation of adults who are destroying something precious before he reaches the age at which he can stop us. Through sobs and rage he shouts, “Tell the president!” Having seen me on television, Daniel has a somewhat inflated impression of my influence. Eight-year-olds are not, on the whole, always repositories of good sense, and Daniel is no

Lewis’s That Hideous Strength (1945), the changing relationships between magic, science and religion are expressed in a conversation between Dr Dimble (a teacher of English) and his wife. Dr Dimble remarks: ‘if you dip into any college, or school, or parish – anything you like – at a given point in its history, you always find that there was a time before that point when there was more elbow-room and contrasts weren’t so sharp; and that there’s going to be a point after that time when there is even less room for indecision and choices are more momentous … The who

The production, transportation, storage, and waste of food products have a significant impact on the environment. The UK government’s National Food Strategy (Dimbleby, 2021), an independent review of England’s entire food system, recommends that multiple interventions are required for healthy and sustainable diets to create a long-term shift in our food culture. Online supermarkets constitute an increasingly large share of grocery shopping, 12.6% of grocery sales were made online in March 2022 compared with just 8.0% three years ago (McKevitt, 2022).
