Abstract:
On July 19,1989, at 1515h, United Airlines flight 232 with 297 passengers and crew on board, experienced disintegration of the number 2 engine (in the tail section) while at 40-thousand feet above Alta, Iowa (Map 1). The DC-10, en route from Denver to Chicago, was diverted to Sioux City, Iowa's Gateway Airport. The disabled jet made a crash landing on an unused runway, burst apart, and caught fire upon impact. Due to the advanced warning of the potential crash, local crash-fire-rescue (CFR) units from the Air National Guard stationed at Gateway Airport, local and regional paramedic and fire units, an advanced life-support EMS helicopter service, and the two Sioux City hospitals were on alert and ready. Firefighters and Air National Guard personnel fought the fire and EMS personnel performed triage, provided emergency care in the field, and transported victims from the crash scene to local health care facilities in Sioux City. Injured victims in critical condition were transported first followed by those with lesser injuries. All were being treated within one hour and 45 minutes of the event. Of the 297 passengers and crew, 59 were admitted to local hospitals in critical condition, and 124 were treated for less severe injuries and later released.

Abstract:
On the 30th Anniversary of Nursing Science Quarterly, the 17-year journey of conceiving, launching, and guiding the “Teaching-Learning Column” was explored in this dialogue with Dr. Sandra Schmidt Bunkers, adjunct professor of nursing, South Dakota State University Brookings, South Dakota, founding contributing editor of the column, and Dr. Barbara Backer Condon, Professor of Nursing, Briar Cliff University, Sioux City, Iowa, contributing editor, 2012-2016. Reflecting on the shared stories, the challenge is offered to continue the tradition of the column in reading, writing, and thinking from the edge, to bravely consider what might be, daring to go beyond the confinements of mainstream thinking, and to vision as yet unimagined possibilities in teaching-learning in nursing.

Abstract:
The inspiration for this paper came rather unexpectedly. In February 2006, I made the long trip from my home in Sioux City, Iowa, to Torino, Italy in order to witness the Olympic Winter Games. Barely a month later, I found myself in California at the newly-renovated Getty Villa, home to one of the world's great collections of Greco-Roman antiquities. At the Villa I attended a talk about a Roman mosaic depicting a boxing scene from Virgil's Aeneid. The tiny tiles showed not only two boxers, but a wobbly looking ox. ‘What is wrong with this ox?’ asked the docent. ‘Why is he there at the match?’ The answer, of course, is that he is the prize. And the reason he is wobbly is because the victor has just sacrificed this prize to the gods in thanksgiving, by punching him between the eyes. A light went on in my head; I turned to my husband and whispered, ‘Just like Joey Cheek in Torino.’ My husband smiled indulgently, but my mind was already racing. I realized that by donating his victory bonus to charity, Cheek had tapped into one of the oldest and most venerable traditions in sport: individual sacrifice for the benefit of the larger community. It is a tradition that derives from the religious function of the ancient Olympic Games and it deserves to be revived the modern world.

Abstract:
<em>Abstract</em>.—The paddlefish <em>Polyodon spathula </em>snag fishery, jointly managed by the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission and the South Dakota Department of Game, Fish and Parks, on the Missouri River from Gavins Point Dam near Yankton, South Dakota (river mile [rm] 811 [river kilometer {rkm} 1,305]) to the mouth of the Big Sioux River near Sioux City, Iowa (rm 734) has undergone many changes over the past 50 years. Changes in season length and harvest regulations were aimed at reducing overall paddlefish harvest and altering the population structure. This snagging season has evolved from an open, year-round fishery with liberal daily and possession limits to a 30-d limited-entry season with a conservative number of harvest tags issued by lottery drawing in 1997. Angler interest continues to increase as indicated by the increasing number of applicants for harvest tags. There was no difference in total fishing use or mean hours snagged per angler; however, South Dakota anglers were more likely to fish weekdays and in the Gavins Point Dam tailwater than Nebraska anglers. No differences were found between the number of fish harvested or the harvest rate among Nebraska and South Dakota anglers from 1997 through 2006. Total harvest, harvest rates and the number of paddlefish caught and released dramatically increased in 2004–2006. Response of the paddlefish population to regulation changes has been positive. There has been a significant increase in mean length of paddlefish sampled with nets from 1991 to 2005 (<em>r</em>2 = 0.73), and significant increases in both proportional stock density (<em>r</em>2= 0.78) and relative stock density of preferred length fish (<em>r</em>2 = 0.57) from 1982 to 2005. The success of joint management of this interjurisdictional paddlefish snag fishery was the result of angler input, population and harvest monitoring, mutual regulation changes, and cooperation from both state agencies.
