Full textThe aim of this memoir is to bring up the contradictions of immigrations ideas in The Belly of the Atlantic of Fatou Diome. Our purpose is to analyze those discrepancies by trying to show up them. The results of our study allowed us to testify the authors concerns which desire is to rebuild that old myth of immigration. Fatou Diome, by demystifying Europe, immigration will be no longer perceived as the bulwark of the poverty troubles.

Full textThe purpose of this essay is to analyze the condition and conception of women in Fatou Diome's novel Le Ventre de l’Atlantique. This analysis is done in light of the work of several African women writers. Fatou Diome evokes and denounces the position of the women on the island of Niodior through many topics such as submission, forced marriage, infertility, polygamy, patriarchal society, traditional versus modern woman, freedom, women as objects as victims of customs and traditions.

Full textThe purpose of this memoir is to study the work of Fatou Diome, The Belly of the Atlantic. Diome sends a message to young Africans: to take responsibility and dignity play an important role in the work. The theme we will deal with is the aesthetics of mirage. She is building a mirage around immigration and we will show what she is doing to get her message across. Our work is composed of two main parts: The construction of the mirage and the destruction of the myth and an intermediate part devoted to the in-between worlds: the Atlantic Ocean that the author personifies by attributing it a belly.

Full textThis work aims at dispalying the language mechanisms used by Daniel Biyaoula, Fatou Diome and Léonora Miano in their novels in order to convey the meaning. It higens on the discourse analysis. The work of fiction lies a diversity of clues that the enunciation underlines and helps better examine the organization. Therefore, our study is divided into parts. The first theme is, « The scene of enunciation: pattern indicative of the functioning of society ». It analyzes the elements of speech in connection with the social, cultural, literary and political context of Africa and France. It appears from this that the characters are subjected by customary, religious and cultural practrice updated in the space in the novel. The second part is entitled « The enunciative registration method of the characters in the textual frabric » and it is particularly interested in communication devices that determine the characteristics of thecharacters. From language elements, this section proposes to see from the organization of textual structures, how the enunciation defines the characters

Full textThe news of identity remains tied to disciplinary fields like sociology, anthropology, social psychology, history, linguistics. In the literary field, the thematic network around human existence Africa built the notion of identity. The thematic approaches are different, but the differences result from the concern of authors, also parallel visions that differ; should be added style which is renewed for a writer to another. For these creators, the novel is like a huge symbolic universe, each artist can build at its own tastes, his fiction, and build a handwriting. These authors do not have the same facts, and they do not address the same way the embarrassment of identity. We wanted to understand, through a thesis, "fortune" literary writings on African identity. This desire to clarify the issue of the identity of African writing, leads us to more precisely, analysis of identity according to the procedures and imagination of three African writers: Valentin Yves Mudimbe, and Eugene Ebodé Fatou Diome. Our feature is not only to integrate writing in the theme of identity, but also to study its evolution from the speech of women, especially when it is an intellectual. The focus of our topic is based on the relationship between African identity and writing modern fiction. Basically, this study could lead us to trace the history of African literature, because it has created bonds of identity with language, spatial and temporal texts being insular

Full textThe object of this study is to explore the « imaginative geography » in the novel Le ventre de l’Atlantique, written by Fatou Diome. The concept of « imaginative geography » describes relations of spatial domination and the construction of the « Other », entirely different from « us » (Saïd, 1978). The two countries in the novel, France and Senegal, are analysed as two irreconcilable spheres, associated with oppositions such as we – the Other, individualism – collectivism, rationality – superstition. Two spatial images are discussed in this study: the island of Niodior in Senegal and the Atlantic Ocean. The isolation of Niodior reinforces the separation into two opposed spheres, while the Atlantic Ocean constitutes an element charged with magical forces, connected to life and death. Referring to the idea of hybridity, the novel also presents alternative spaces and identities, transgressing the colonial structure.

Full textOur subject of reflection consisted in thinking of what makes link between the French-speaking literature of subsaharian Africa and the Antilles, in addition to the history. We dealt with the writing strategies deployed by the authors, to stand out, to reveal their existence. On the basis of the French word “marronnage”, taking its name from Spanish “Cimarron” used to qualify this historical phenomenon related to slavery, we started to think about its literary transposition. The literary mythologizing of the Maroon by authors such as Eugène Dayot, Louis-Timagène Houat, and more recently Glissant, has enabled to develop aesthetics of the survival, to value the identity of the Marron, herald of the Antillean people, in the resistance to slavery. The main part of our work was about the extension of this theme of the marronnage to the colonial and postcolonial periods, by setting as postulate the hypothesis of the existence of a form of intellectual marronnage as foundation of negro-African aesthetics, established by the forerunners of the Negritude, Senghor and Césaire, whose most original but often unknown work was the conquest of a language of the negritude. The French-speaking contemporary writers of subsaharian Africa, for instance Alain Mabanckou and Fatou Diome, in a context of an internationalist dynamics and a literary space conditioned by the diktats of an eurocentrist criticism, applied a form of ( trans ) esthetic marronnage, but also with a doubled “linguistic surconscience”, by developing strategies intended for subversively setting at the heart of the language the print of a claimed abnormality, as only means to make their identity known

Full textHow can we consider ourselves African in the twenty-first century when we are both the heirs of a disguised history and willing to go beyond the stereotyped imaginaries inherited from it? This question suggests that the colonial inheritance, precisely the "Negro reason", which is composed of two distinct approaches, namely "the Negro's Western consciousness" and "the Negro's negro consciousness", is submitted to criticism. That criticism – allegedly "objective'' – advocates an "in-common" humanism that transcends the "Western abstract universalism" which had placed Europe at the centre of the world. Several discourses that converge on a common purpose reveal a writing that is based on the deconstruction of the Western representations and stereotyped cultural imaginaries. They investigate the Africa-World relationship and the concept of identity taking into account the historical evolution of societies from this continent. Most of the literary essays and fictions by Achille Mbembe, Alain Mabanckou, Leonora Miano, Celestin Monga and Fatou Diome show that the race, the Negro and the word "Africa" are factories that were mobilized for the Atlantic trade. This process of putting the African otherness in fiction is still current. Indeed, it demonstrates that Africans' conditions today would be closely linked to the colonial past. A poetic and socio critical analysis of these texts, by highlighting cross-studies of these works which compare different angles, appeared necessary. In so far as the interruption of African independences caused by the former colonial powers in complicity with their African allies named the "social plagues" operating daily in Africa and the ever-increasing African immigration towards Western countries, indicate that the relationships between Africa and the Westerners in particular seem neither serene nor "equitable" yet. According to these writers, the African identity – in which they are interested in and which they consider as flexible data – has been nourished by the multiple encounters of Africa with the West mainly; thus giving birth to an inclusive Africanity: suitable to the opening of Africa to the world and the integration of the world into Africa

A novel design of neutron sensor was investigated and developed. The perforated, or micro-structured, diode neutron sensor is a concept that has the potential to enhance neutron sensitivity of a common solid-state sensor configuration. The common thin-film coated diode neutron sensor is the only semiconductor-based neutron sensor that has proven feasible for commercial use. However, the thin-film coating restricts neutron counting efficiency and severely limits the usefulness of the sensor. This research has shown that the perforated design, when properly implemented, can increase the neutron counting efficiency by greater than a factor of 4. Methods developed in this work enable detectors to be fabricated to meet needs such as miniaturization, portability, ruggedness, and adaptability. The new detectors may be used for unique applications such as neutron imaging or the search for special nuclear materials. The research and developments described in the work include the successful fabrication of variant perforated diode neutron detector designs, general explanations of fundamental radiation detector design (with added focus on neutron detection and compactness), as well as descriptive theory and sensor design modeling useful in predicting performance of these unique solid-state radiation sensors. Several aspects in design, fabrication, and operational performance have been considered and tested including neutron counting efficiency, gamma-ray response, perforation shapes and depths, and silicon processing variations. Finally, the successfully proven technology was applied to a 1-dimensional neutron sensor array system.
Traoré, Aboulaye. "High power diamond Schottky diode." Thesis, Grenoble, 2014. http://www.theses.fr/2014GRENT093/document.
Full textThis thesis was focused on high power diamond Schottky diodes fabrication. Diamond growth and its doping are today well mastered. The advent of vertical architectures (diode active layer grown on heavily doped diamond substrate) and pseudo-vertical (stack of diode active layer and heavily doped layer grown on insulating substrate) allowed minimizing the high serial resistance, which was induced by the high ionization energy of acceptor-type dopants (boron doped diamond) preferably used in rectifiers fabrications.Besides these geometrical configurations favoring high forward currents, diamond Schottky diodes (pseudo vertical or vertical structures) were limited by: I) the quality of diode active layer altered by defects propagation from heavily doped layer thus leading to lower blocking voltage (maximum critical field of 3 MV/cm reported) than the theoretical values (theoretical values of critical field of 10 MV/cm), II) Schottky electrodes selected and the thermal and chemical stability of interfaces formed with oxygen-terminated diamond surface (required getting a Schottky contact and reducing as much as possible the interface states). Schottky metal selection and diamond surface pretreatment are crucial to get low barrier heights (low forward voltage drop and so low losses), low defects density at interfaces (low leakage current), and a thermally stable interface (high operating temperature). In this thesis, we demonstrated that a pseudo vertical diamond Schottky diode based on an oxygen-terminated surface covered by an easily oxidizable metal like zirconium (Zr) combined with an optimal heavily doped layer, allows overcoming these limitations. We first found a trade-off between the thickness of heavily doped layer and its doping level in order to minimize defects generations and thus improve the quality of diode active layer grown on the heavily doped layer (Less defects propagations). On a second hand, the Zr metallic electrodes selected gave rise to a thin zirconia interface layer which was thermally stable thus preventing the oxygen layer desorption. Zr/oxidized diamond rectifiers exhibited better features than the current state of art: a high forward current density (1000 A/cm2 at 6 V), a high critical field above 7 MV/cm (1000 V blocking voltage with a leakage current less than 1 pA), a Baliga's power figure of merit above 244 MW/cm2 (the highest value reported), a good reproducibility regardless of diodes and samples, the possibility to get a barrier heights below 1 eV by annealing, and a thermal stability higher than 500°C

Full textThis master's thesis describe electromagnetic simulations of a gallium antimonide (GaSb) light emitting diode, LED. A problem for such devices is that most of the generated light is reflected from the surface due to total internal reflection, and is therefore prevented from coupling out of the semiconductor material. Etching out a 2D photonic crystal grating on the LED surface would put aside the absolute rule of total internal reflection, and could therefore be used to increase the total transmission. The simulation method which was developed was supposed to find geometry parameters for the photonic crystal to optimize the light extraction. A set of plane waves were therefore simulated using FDTD to build an equivalent to the Fresnel equations for the photonic crystal surface. From that the total transmittance and radiation patterns for the simulated geometries were calculated. The results indicated an increase in the transmission properties of up to 70% using a square grating of holes where the holes have a radius of 0.5µm, the hole depth is 0.4µm, and the grating constant is 1µm. A hexagonal grating of holes and a square grating of isotropically etched holes were also simulated, and featured improvements on the same scale, but with different dimensions for the holes. The simulations were computationally very demanding, and the simulation structure therefore had to be highly trimmed to limit the calculation time to reasonable values. This might have reduced the accuracy of the results. Especially the optimum grating constant, and the value of the optimum improvement itself is believed to be somewhat inaccurate.

Full textNitride nanowires exhibit outstanding opto-electronic and mechanical properties and are considered as promising materials for light-emitting diodes (LEDs), thanks to their high crystalline quality, non-polar facets, good mechanical flexibility, high aspect ratio, etc. This Ph.D. thesis addresses the growth, the device fabrication, the optical and electrical characterizations and the optical simulations of III-nitride NW devices, with a special emphasis on the LED applications.First, this thesis presents the growth of m-plane InGaN/GaN quantum wells with different In concentrations in self-assembled core-shell nanowires by metal-organic chemical vapor deposition. Then, by using these nanowires, LED devices based on two different integration strategies (namely, in-plane and vertical integration) are demonstrated. The in-plane integration is based on the horizontally dispersed single nanowires. I have proposed a basic integrated photonic platform consisting of a nanowire LED, an optimized waveguide and a nanowire photodetector. I have also developed a nanowire alignment system using dielectrophoresis. The vertical integration targets the fabrication of flexible LEDs based on vertical nanowire arrays embedded in polymer membranes. Flexible monochromatic, bi-color, white LEDs have been demonstrated. Their thermal properties have been analyzed. The nanowires grown on 2D materials by van der Waals epitaxy are easy to be lifted-off from their native substrate, which should facilitate the fabrication of flexible nanowire devices. With this motivation, in the last part of this thesis, I have investigated the selective area growth of GaN NWs on micro- and nano- scale graphene by molecular beam epitaxy

Full textCompact diode-pumped solid-state lasers (DPSSL) arecontinuously replacing traditional gas lasers as well asenabling completely new technology. However, compact and costefficient designs are required to satisfy end-user demands. Theaim of this thesis was therefore to investigate novel laserdesigns for given applications considering these demands. In alarge part of the thesis work, nonlinear optics were employedto realize laser wavelengths where there was no appropriatelaser transition available.
Besides other nonlinear crystals such as BBO, LBO and KTP,periodically poled KTP played an important role in this thesiswork. Its unique properties regarding up conversion processeswere exploited, thus supplying a broadened view over itspotential and limitations.
This thesis places emphasis on practical concerns, mainlyrelated to real applications. It gives solutions to the beamshaping of laser diodes, covers the simulation and the designof laser dynamics as well as laser performance and describesthe sources of laser output degradation and damage mechanisms.Novel infrared lasers were designed and multiple intra-cavity,external cavity and non-resonant multi-pass frequencyconversion schemes were successfully employed and optimized. These produced red, orange, green, blue and ultraviolet outputfor various applications like spectroscopy, micro machining andwriting of fiber Bragg gratings.

Full textDespite tremendous achievements, the field of conjugated polymers is still in its infancy, mimicking the more mature inorganic, i.e. silicon-based, technologies. We may though look forward to the realisation of electronic and electrochemical devices with exotic designs and device applications, as our knowledge about the fundamentals of these promising materials grow ever stronger.
My own contribution to this development, originating from an idea first put forward by my tutor, Professor Magnus Berggren, is a design for a switchable polymer-based diode. Its architecture is based on a modified version of a recently developed highly-rectifying diode,12 where an intermediate molecular layer has been incorporated in the bottom contact. Due to its unique ability to switch its internal resistance during operation, this thin layer can be used to shift the amount of (forward) current induced into the rectifying structure of the device, and by doing so shift its electrical characteristics between an insulating and a rectifying behaviour (as illustrated below). Such a component should be of great commercial interest in display technologies since it would, at least hypothetically, be able to replace the transistors presently used to address the individual matrix elements.
However, although fairly simple in theory, it proved to be quite the challenge to fabricate the device structure. Machinery errors and contact problems aside, several process routes needed to be evaluated and only a small fraction of the batches were successful. In fact, it was not until the very last day that I detected the first indications that the concept might actually work. Hence, several modifications might still be necessary to undertake in order to get the device to work properly.
