Yams are an important food source grown throughout the Pacific but the international movement of the crop is restricted due to a lack of understanding of the viruses infecting these plants. This study focused on identifying and characterising badnaviruses infecting yams and the subsequent development of sensitive and reliable diagnostic tests. These tests can be used in virus-screening programs to enable the safe international movement of virus-free yam germplasm thus contributing to food and nutritional security of Pacific Island Countries.

Dioscorea trifida L. é uma espécie de inhame comestível originária da América do Sul, que em conjunto com outras espécies importantes economicamente do gênero Dioscorea é mantida por pequenos agricultores tradicionais. Assim, observa-se que as comunidades tradicionais exercem um papel fundamental na manutenção e geração da diversidade genética de inhame.O objetivo deste trabalho foi obter informações a respeito da distribuição, manejo e diversidade genética de D. trifida no Brasil. Para tanto, foram visitados e entrevistados agricultores dos Estados de São Paulo, Santa Catarina e Mato Grosso.

Dans le présent travail les possibilités de multiplication par bouturage in vitro, de trois cultivars d’igname présentant un grand intérêt économique ont été étudiées, et le comportement des vitroplantules ainsi obtenues a été observé. Les explants primaires doivent être prélevés sur des parties jeunes de plantes conduites en serre. Les auxines sont favorables à l’enracinement de boutures ; une cycokinine comme la benzyl adénine est plutôt favorable à la caulogenèse. D. Cayenensis rotundata, c. V. V17/2, donne le meilleur coefficient de multiplication, sur le milieu 169, dérivé du milieu M. S.
