Abstract:
The Seventh International Meeting of the European Laboratory Working Group on Diphtheria (ELWGD) was held in Vienna, Austria in June 2002 and brought together the microbiologists and epidemiologists responsible for diphtheria in many countries throughout the world. The ELWGD was formed in 1993 in response to the epidemics of diphtheria in Russia and the Newly Independent States (NIS) of the former Soviet Union (1,2). These epidemics, and others elsewhere, highlighted the importance of strengthening and maintaining both epidemiological surveillance and reliable laboratory screening. Since December 2001, these areas have been progressed and strengthened by European Commission (EC) funding to undertake a feasibility study for diphtheria surveillance amongst European Union (EU) member states and accession countries, and to establish a definitive and official European diphtheria surveillance network called DIPNET (EC DG SANCO Agreement No. S12.324473 (2001 CVG4-012)). This was the first international meeting of the ELWGD to be organised and funded under the auspice of the DIPNET (European Diphtheria Surveillance Network).

Abstract:
Alaska’s salmon fisheries are one of the more intensely managed natural resources in the world. The state’s salmon fisheries support recreational, subsistence, and commercial harvest with multiple billions of dollars flowing into the economy, and define the cultural identity of many Alaskans. Fishery management practices rely on historic records to set policies with two goals: to meet salmon escapement quota and to maximize salmon harvest. At the same time, rapid social and ecological changes to the sub-Arctic are already impacting salmon runs and fisheries management. Combined with the inability of fishery managers to test the outcome of proposed policy changes, an understanding of the role social and ecological drivers play in harvest and effort is required. To address the two-forked problem of understanding socio-ecological dynamics and potential policy responses to ecological and social changes, we (1) conducted stakeholder workshops to solicit key system drivers, (2) built an integrated agent based model (ABM) of the system’s socio-ecological dynamics, and (3) tested the impacts of alternative future scenarios of ecological, social, and policy changes on the system’s outcomes. We previously constructed and validated a high-fidelity, data-driven, agent-based model of the Kenai River, Alaska that simulates seasonal harvest of sockeye and Chinook salmon, the fishing activities of the personal use fishery, commercial drift, and set gillnet agents. We study the role of key stakeholder and ecological drivers, using the ABM decision support tool, and their implications for fisheries management policies. Analysis of the scenario based studies found resilience in management of commercial fisheries to changing salmon migration dynamics, a lack of adaptive capacity in recreational (personal use) dipnet users to altered sockeye salmon runs, and the possible utility of introducing management measures in the dipnet fishery to manipulate sockeye escapement levels. These findings represent the usefulness of this type of ABM in assisting fishery managers everywhere in investigating possible future outcomes of different management or ecological scenarios.

Abstract:
Methods for Sampling Aquatic Insects on Walls of Waterfalls Abstract. We present a new method for sampling aquatic insects in waterfall environments, and the development of a sampling equipment. We propose a change in the shape of the dipnet or traditional hand sieve. This change in shape, with the addition of a brush and spatula, enables the scraping of walls, so that even species of grabber habits are sampled. We propose, also, an adaptation of the method of fixed area transects to obtain vertical samples similar to the obtained through horizontal transects in streams.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT We examined the effects of acute stress on the immune system and disease resistance of juvenile chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha) in laboratory and clinical trials. Immune function, as measured by the ability of lymphocytes from the anterior kidney to generate specific antibody-producing cells (APC) in vitro, was depressed 4 h after stress, when plasma cortisol levels were highest. At the same time, resistance to the fish pathogen, Vibrio anguillarum, was also depressed. Compared with controls, plasma cortisol and APC of stressed fish were unchanged after 24 h, and disease resistance was enhanced as evidenced by higher survival rate and longer mean time to death of mortalities. After 7 days, even though numbers of APC were depressed, plasma cortisol concentration and disease resistance did not differ from controls. This pattern was generally the same, independent of the type of stress applied: i.e. being held out of water in a dipnet for 30 s, manipulation during hatchery operations for 4 h, or transportation for 9 h. These and earlier findings suggest that similar endocrine-immune interactions operate in the mammalian and salmonid systems during acute stress. Journal of Endocrinology (1989) 120, 135–142

Abstract:
For stocked sportfish, stocking stress can cause substantial mortality. We evaluated mortality of three young-of-year esocids, northern pike (Esox lucius), muskellunge (E. masquinongy), and their F1 hybrid, the tiger muskellunge, in response to simulated handling, transport, and thermal stressors in the laboratory. In 15 °C acclimated esocids, a 10° rapid temperature increase caused little mortality. A 12° increase killed some fish in all taxa; however, mean mortality did not differ significantly among northern pike [Formula: see text], tiger muskellunge [Formula: see text], and muskellunge [Formula: see text]. Nearly all 15 °C acclimated fish (98%) died in response to a 15° increase. Tempering (0.15°∙min−1) did not reduce this near complete mortality. Handling (30 s dipnet) and transport confinement (60 g∙L−1 for 120 min) also did not alter mortality when compared with a 12° temperature increase alone. Field experiments, completed concurrently, confirmed our laboratory finding that healthy esocids, acclimated to 15 °C, stocked at lake temperatures corresponding to a temperature increase [Formula: see text], suffered little mortality. Because mortality did not differ among these two species and their hybrid, differential vulnerability to these stocking stressors need not be considered when deciding which esocid to stock.

Abstract:

During this research, an integrative-taxonomic  analysis of M. avidus species complex was performed. The study was based on geographically and temporally extensive material. Genetic characterisation of cryptic species, based on 5’ and 3’ regions of COI gene, defined parameters of genetic variability. Shared and unique haplotypes between and within of cryptic species were detected. The results of genetic variability analysis based on COI gene showed that specimens from the islands Corfu, Evia and half-island Peloponnese, which were preliminarily identified as M. moenium, represent a new, endemic species of the selected complex. Diagnostic enzyme loci showed that M. avidus and M. moenium represent sibling species, which were the last one who separated within M. avidus complex. According to current information, it was concluded that M. avidus complex consists of 5 species: M. avidus, M. moenium, M. megavidus, M. ibericus and M. aff. moenium. In the next  chapter, relying on modern techniques of artificial  intelligence, the species distribution modelling and the comparison of ecological niches were performed. In the last part of the research, the advantages of artificial intelligence were used in order to model a system that was able to determinate one of two sibling species, based on appropriate predictor. This research has generally contributed to a characterization of hoverfly diversity and helped resolving a taxonomic status of species in one of the most challenging groups in Syrphidae family. Genetic differentiation data represent directions for defining future conservation strategies for biodiversity protection of defined cryptic species of Merodon avidus complex

Abstract:
Galvanized sheet is produced commercially by hot dipping steel sheet in a galvanizing bath to produce a thin zinc rich protective coating on the steel. This investigation is concerned with the solidification of the galvanized layer with particular reference to the growth of large "spangles" in the galvanized layer. The manner in which the galvanized layer solidifies was found to be dependent on a number of factors including melt supercooling, nucleation rate, dendritic growth, bath composition, bath impurities, and cooling rate. The present results show that the supercooling necessary to activate nucleating sites in a typical galvanizing bath is less than 1°C. The supercooling which occurs in the galvanized layer as it solidifies is also generally less than 1°C, contrary to results reported in the literature. This suggests that grains nucleate in the bulk of the galvanized layer, and not necessarily at the air or iron surfaces of the melt as has been reported. No clear evidence was obtained which shows that spangles, with large dendrite spikes, are associated with large melt supercooling. Accordingly, spangle formation cannot be attributed to higher dendritic velocities resulting from large thermal supercooling. The surface topography of the galvanized layer is a property of major consideration in industrial applications of the galvanized product. Present measurements show that the surface topography is strongly dependent on the solidification structure of the galvanized layer. Large spangles solidify dendritically with large variations in the surface topography. The spangles have shiny and frosty sectors, which are relatively smooth and rough respectively, and inclined to the steel sheet surface. Large depressions are present at the boundaries between adjacent spangles, termed "pulldown", which can markedly reduce the effective thickness of the galvanized layer, and cannot be removed by subsequent treatment of the galvanized sheet. Increasing the concentration of lead in the bath increased the pulldown. The mechanism of pulldown formation is not clear. Volume shrinkage during solidification cannot account for the large depressions observed. The hot dipped galvanized samples prepared in this investigation used galvanized sheets as starting material. Observation of the distribution of bath alloy additions in the samples, using microprobe analysis and radioactive tracers, clearly showed that the original galvanized layer was replaced by the metal from the bath. Solute segregation in a galvanized layer containing spangles is directly associated with the dendritic growth of the spangles. Solute is depleted in the dendrite spikes and concentrated between the spikes. No solute concentration was observed at the grain boundaries between adjacent spangles. Some preferential surface segregation, associated with shiny and frosty sectors of a spangle, was observed. The growth of large spangles in the galvanized layer is directly related to the galvanizing bath composition. Large spangles are obtained with alloying additions which have very limited solid solubility in zinc and relatively low liquid surface tensions. The diameter of the spangles decrease as the surface tension of the alloy addition increases. Spangle growth is associated with dendritic growth. Dendritic growth occurs as a result of constitutional supercooling at the dendrite tip due to solute segregation during growth at the solid/liquid interface. It is proposed that the presence of a thin layer of highly concentrated solute at the dendrite tip changes the curvature of the tip. The change is related to the liquid surface tension of the solute. Solutes with lower values of surface tension decrease the tip curvature which results in an increase in dendrite velocity and larger spangles. The orientation of the spangles is shown to vary appreciably. The basal plane of a spangle is observed to be inclined to the surface of the steel sheet at angles between 8 and 80 degrees. This differs from reports which indicate that the basal plane is nearly parallel to the steel sheet. The growth of a spangle is primarily associated with dendritic growth. Small (0001) platelets of solid form at heterogeneous nucleating sites in the melt from which <1010> spikes grow. Each spangle forms from a single nucleating source which is randomly oriented with respect to the surface of the steel sheet. As the dendrite spikes grow they shortly encounter the melt/air interface or the melt/steel interface. The spikes will continue to grow along the surfaces at a high velocity in a direction defined by the initial <1010> direction of the growing spikes. As the primary spike grows, secondary and tertiary spikes form, generally inclined to the melt surface and in <10l0> directions when possible. The secondary branches of a primary stalk which grow along the melt/air interface form shiny spangle segments. The secondary branches on the opposite side of the primary spike grow along the melt/steel surface and form frosty sectors. The difference is not due to an orientation difference between the spangles as reported in the literature.

Abstract:
Galvanized steel is one of the most common materials used in the construction industry for its relatively low cost paired with an acceptable corrosion resistance. Nevertheless, the early failure of a number of structures around the world that use galvanized steel has raised some controversy on the understanding of the corrosion behavior of zinc. This dissertation presents the results of several electrochemical studies and mathematical models done on zinc and galvanized steel as an attempt to fill in the gaps of current knowledge. Results indicate an increase on the corrosion rate with increasing amounts of Na₂SO₄, as well as a potential difference between samples in oxygen saturated, aerated, and de-aerated conditions is large enough to promote macrocell formation under aggresive conditions. The presence of sulphate in the soil significantly increased the corrosion rates and, thus, it is important to consider the effect of sulphate in determining the type of de-icing salt. In sulphate-free solutions, potassium acetate appeared to be the best option; while in the presence of sulphate, MgCl₂ and CaCl₂ had the lowest corrosion rate. The improved performance was attributed to the formation of a more evenly distributed corrosion product with better protective properties. Furthermore, when measuring corrosion at temperatures ranging from -5°C to 25°C, the rate observed at sub-zero temperatures is still higher than the rate acceptable for galvanized steel reinforced structures. SEM pictures show that the corrosion products grows preferentially in the vicinity of zinc grain boundaries and that it is apt to cracking with increasing thickness. A numerical model was developed to calculate the corrosion rate of galvanized steel in soil at three different stages of corrosion by considering key soil corrosion parameters. This thesis focuses on the effect of field conditions relevant to the Canadian climate on the corrosion performance of Mechanically Stabelized Earth (MSE) wall soil reinforcement and facings. Results indicate that the proposed model is suitable to be used for the service-life design and risk assessment of MSE walls and to determine the optimum zinc cover thickness.
