Abstract:
The aim of this study was to determine the relationship between selenium concentration and activity of glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) in the whole blood of sheep and reference ranges for the activity of GSH-Px for evaluation of the selenium status of sheep in the Czech Republic. Selenium concentration and activity of glutathione peroxidase were determined in whole blood samples collected from 92 sheep in six herds. The GSH-Px activity in the samples was measured using the photometric method. Selenium in the sample was measured using the hydride technique atomic absorption spectrometry. Data on both parameters were processed using correlation and regression analysis in order to obtain reference values of GSH-Px for the indirect evaluation of the selenium status of sheep. The two variables showed a close and significant correlation (r = 0.95; P < 0.01). The regression line, defined by the equation y = 7.5857x – 121.87 (linear) or y = –0.0167x2 + 11.993x – 355.57 (polynomial), allowed us to determine the GSH-Px activity of 637, resp. 677 μkat/l as equivalent to selenium concentration in whole blood of sheep 100 μg/l. Mean selenium concentration and mean GSH-Px activity found in whole blood samples were 123.42 ± 57.84 μg/l and 814.34 ± 463.64 μkat/l, respectively. In this study, a close dependence of GSH-Px activity on the selenium concentration in the blood of sheep was found. Activity values of GSH-Px were determined for use in the diagnosis of sufficient selenium status in sheep in the Czech Republic (GSH-Px activity greater than 600 μkat/l of whole blood).

Abstract:
Purpose Extant research on comparative advertising has focused only on “market leader” comparisons (a brand targeting the market leader), whereas in the marketplace, “multi-brand” comparisons are more prevalent (Kalro et al., 2010). Moreover, most research focuses on direct comparisons only. Hence, this research aims to investigate the interplay between comparison ad strategy (“market leader”/“multi-brand” comparisons) and comparison ad format (direct/indirect comparisons) on the effectiveness of comparative advertising. Design/methodology/approach This paper uses four 2 × 2 fully crossed factorial designs (comparison ad format: direct vs indirect and comparison ad strategy: market leader vs multi brand) with established and new brands in two categories: powdered detergents and smart phones. All studies were conducted in metropolitan cities of India. Findings By and large, the experiments indicated that direct (indirect) comparisons lowered (heightened) perceived manipulative intent and enhanced (reduced) attitude-toward-the-ad for multi-brand (market leader) comparisons. Practical implications Findings suggest that when advertisers use comparative advertising, they may use direct ads when using multi-brand comparisons and use indirect ones when using market leader comparisons. It could also be argued that when advertisers use multi-brand comparisons because of fragmentation in the marketplace, they may directly compare against these multiple brands. When advertisers need to compare against a market leader, they may do so indirectly. Originality/value This research is among the first to investigate multi-brand comparisons that are widely used in the industry and that too in the context of both direct and indirect comparison formats.

The simplified system of direct payments in 2005 is being compared in this contribution with the standard direct payments (a system applied in the EU-15) and with the system applied in 2004. Production and economic indicators exploited in this analysis were provided by the agricultural enterprises for the period 2003–2005. For the selected file of enterprises there were calculated the claims for subsidies according to various systems of direct payments administration and the volume of direct payments was recounted per ha of agricultural land. The enterprises were divided according to the LFA proportion in the total area of farmed land. The analysis was realized due to the means and in the frame of the project NAZV QG 60042.

Abstract:
The work in this paper focuses on the system quality of direct and coherent communication system for two computers. A system quality is represented by Signal to Noise ratio (SNR) and Bit Error Rate (BER). First part of the work includes implementation of direct optical fiber communication system and measure the system quality .The second part of the work include implementation both the( homodyne and heterodyne)coherent optical fiber communication system and measure the system quality . Laser diode 1310 nm wavelength with its drive circuit used in the transmitter circuit . A single mode of 62.11 km optical fiber is selected as transmission medium . A PIN photo detector is used in the receiver circuit. The optical D-coupler was used to combine the optical signal that come from transmitter laser source with optical signal of laser local oscillator at 1310/1550 nm to obtain coherent detection . Results show that for direct detection the SNR and the BER (28.5 dB, 9.64x10-8,) respectively, while for homodyne and heterodyne coherent detection , the SNR(94.36,97.71)dB and the BER are (1.32x10-22,2.43x10-23) at maximum optical fiber length at 62.11 km. Results show that the homodyne and heterodyne detection are better than direct detection because the large output SNR and low BER of the received signal.

Abstract:
Direct filtration with and without pre-ozone, and dissolved air flotation and filtration were evaluated for clarification of high quality reservoir water in Greenville, South Carolina, USA. Goals of the study included production of low turbidity filtered water and control of algae, iron and manganese, and disinfection by-product precursors. The dissolved air flotation treatment train gave much longer filter runs than direct filtration, when both processes met the 0.10 NTU goal for filtered water quality. Use of pre-ozone was beneficial for direct filtration. Removal of TOC, DBP precursors, and iron and manganese were similar for both processes.

Abstract The paper compares the Arruda—Boyce model, the van der Waals model and the Reduced Polynomial model—a generic class of polynomial models of which Yeoh's cubic model is a special case—in their ability to predict multiaxial deformation states on the basis of uniaxial measurements. These models are reviewed in the light of novel experimental data, giving ample space to the derivation of the equations needed for optimization of the material parameters. The technological relevance of these findings is exemplified in the finite element analysis (FEA) of a complex membrane.

Abstract:
This paper presents a comparative study on the most popular control strategies used to control high power, Direct Drive Wind Turbines. The studied wind turbine is equipped with a supervision scheme in order to fulfil Grid connection requirements (GCR). For the generator-side converter, performances of the Field Oriented Control (FOC) and Direct Torque Control (DTC) are compared. Concerning the grid-side converter, Voltage Oriented Control (VOC) and Direct Power Control (DPC) are examined. The comparison is based on various criteria mainly, steady-state and transient performances. In addition, performances are evaluated in terms of low voltage ride through capabilities (LVRT), power limitation and reactive power control. It has been shown that best power quality features are given by vector control techniques. On the other hand, direct control offers the better dynamic response and power cross-coupling is substantially lower. Furthermore, during fault, the wind turbine does not trip for both techniques. However, vector control is better since it gives low power oscillations
