In this paper we present a heuristic approach for simulating advanced light material interactions in the context of interactive volume rendering. In contrast to previous work, we are able to incorporate complex material functions, which allow to simulate reflectance and scattering. We exploit a common representation of these material properties based on spherical harmonic basis functions, to combine the achieved reflectance and scattering effects with natural lighting conditions, i. e., incorporating colored area light sources. To achieve these goals, we introduce a modified SH projection tech

The Direct-Chill (DC) casting process is used in the non-ferrous metals industry to produce ingots, blooms and cylindrical billets. During DC casting, primary cooling in the mould is followed by secondary cooling, in which the cast product surface is directly cooled by water jets. The formation of defects during the direct-chill casting process can be reduced by controlling the heat extraction in the secondary cooling zone during the start-up phase. Abstract This work presents the development of a new optical imaging system. Previous objections have claimed that it is easier to build a single good quality field lens than a large number of good microlenses and it is therefore better to use a field objective. The possible benefits from a field lens are here traded for a more compact and cost-efficient design that would be suitable for field diagnostics. The new imaging setup described in this work is based on a microlens array capable of capturing light field data and no other refractive optics are used. Hundreds of lenses with a diameter r

Fluorescent labelling combined with confocal microscopy is a powerful tool employed in several laboratories around the world. This is based in the ability to image well only detail that arises from the region of the specimen close to the focal plane. In confocal microscopes, a pinhole situated in front of the detector leads to optical sectioning, at the cost of rejecting some signal photons together with the out-of-focus ones. The problem in this case is that photons generated in the focal volume are susceptible to scattering, changing their direction and not passing through the pinhole, thus

Abstract:
This master thesis deals with description of hierarchical techniques in global lighting computation. Here is explaining the importance of hierarchical techniques in lighting computation and shows method, how to use these hierarchical techniques in realtime radiosity and its extension to dynamic area lighting. These two techniques are described in detail in the first part of this project. In the other part is desing and implementation of application for dynamic area lighting computation.

This Master thesis was aimed at investigating common daylight evaluation methods related to Swedish building codes versus human perception of daylight in residential spaces. Field (interview) and simulation-based study were conducted in one of the typical 20thcentury residential, closed courtyard buildings in Stockholm.   12 residents of Kv. Väktaren 16 were interviewed and simulation models were prepared for the apartments occupied by the participants.   Resident perception of light was mostly contrary to daylight assessing values and methods of daylight factor – DF in a point (CIE overcast s

Schebetta, Dennis Christian. "From Darkness to Light: Examining the Role of Playwright/Director on Obscura." VCU Scholars Compass, 2006. http://scholarscompass.vcu.edu/etd/1428.

Abstract:
The aim and scope of my thesis is to examine the process of playwrights directing their own work, using the production of my play Obscura as an example of personal research, as well as examples of other dramatists. I will examine the advantages and disadvantages that playwrights face when directing their own work. I will compare several methods to my own production of Obscura. I wrote the play in the Spring of 2005 which culminated in a reading in April, followed by a workshop production in the Fall of 2005 in the Newdick Theater at Shafer Street Playhouse.

Background. As newer computers are constructed, more advanced and powerful hardware come along with them. This leads to the enhancement of various program attributes and features by corporations to get ahold of the hardware, hence, improving performance. A relatively new API which serves to facilitate such logic, is Microsoft DirectX 12. There are numerous opinions about this specific API, and to get a slightly better understanding of its capabilities with hardware utilization, this research puts it under some tests. Objectives. Abstract:
During the past decades, the development of laser technology has produced pulses with increasingly higher peak intensities. These can now be made such that their strength rivals, and even exceeds, the atomic potential at the typical distance of an electron from the nucleus. To understand the induced dynamics, one can not rely on perturbative methods and must instead try to get as close to the full machinery of quantum mechanics as practically possible. With increasing field strength, many exotic interactions such as magnetic, relativistic and higher order electric effects may start to play a s

Dominated by Heisenberg's uncertainty principle, vacuum is not quantum mechanically an empty void, i.e. virtual pairs of particles appear and disappear persistently. This nonlinearity subsequently provokes a number of phenomena which can only be practically observed by going to a high-intensity regime. Pair production beyond the so-called Sauter-Schwinger limit, which is roughly the field intensity threshold for pairs to show up copiously, is such a nonlinear vacuum phenomenon. From the viewpoint of Dirac's front form of Hamiltonian dynamics, however, vacuum turns out to be trivial. This trivi

Abstract:
The presence of trace organic compounds (TOrCs) in wastewater effluent and surface waters has raised attention due to their health and environmental effects. Some TOrCs are naturally attenuated via biodegradation, photo-degradation and/or adsorption, but some persist in the environment as contaminants in surface and ground waters. Thus, it is crucially important to understand their transformation pathways and their mechanisms following their discharge into the environment. This work presents research in three parts: • The first part represents an investigation of photo-transfo
