While courtroom examinations are often recognized as a distinct speech-exchange system, little is known about how participants do an examination beyond its unique turn-taking system. This article attempts to shed some light on this issue by studying the question design during the direct examination in an American criminal court case using Conversation Analysis. It shows that attorneys use different question forms compared to casual conversation: declaratives are far less prevalent and questions are often designed as requests for action. In addition, attorneys make use of forms that are not fou

In contrast, there is no evidence for the concept of an “indirect object”. After briefly reviewing seismic signatures associated with the direct detection of hydrocarbons, some possible non-hydrocarbon sources of seismic signatures which may masquerade as hydrocarbon patterns are considered. Four broad avenues of research are suggested which may allow greater assurance in identifying and interpreting seismic signatures associated with hydrocarbon accumulations than is currently enjoyed. It is also suggested that any available information extending upon any part of this paper will increase the base of knowledge of seismic direct detection indicators.

This thesis is a conversation analytic investigation of the social organisation of talk in telephone and computer-mediated calls to NHS Direct, a telephone health helpline in England. The data represent fifty-six routinely audio recorded telephone consultations between nurses and callers between June 2003 and June 2004 at one NHS Direct call centre. Data were transcribed using the Jefferson (2004) transcription system. Data analysis follows the broad trajectory of the call.
