Abstract:
The aim of this study was to determine if mothers display identifiably different communicative styles in their interaction with their normally developing two- to five-year-old children. In order to investigate this issue an extensive coding system was developed, which assessed the structural organization and the communicative function of the speech of 71 mothers as they interacted with their children. By means of factor analysis three maternal communicative styles were distinguished: non-intervening, explaining and directing. In the non-intervening style there is no direct pressure from the mother on the child to respond verbally. The explaining mother is primarily concerned with providing information to her child in a way that gives the child little opportunity to take the speaking turn. The directing mother is mainly engaged in directing the child's behaviour by means of verbal control. The internal consistency of the three communicative styles appeared to be both satisfactory and related to relevant child and mother features.

Abstract:
ObjectivePsychological factors contribute to bipolar disorder illness course, representing targets for psychological intervention. Research to date has focused on bipolar I disorder, extrapolating results to bipolar II disorder. The current study addresses this discrepancy by exploring cognitive and coping styles in patients diagnosed with bipolar I or II disorder.MethodsParticipants were recruited from the Sydney-based Black Dog Institute. Diagnoses were derived via the MINI International Neuropsychiatric Interview. Baseline cognitive and coping style measures were completed, and mood symptoms assessed over a 6-month period. Clinician-rated mood status was assessed at follow-up to determine the predictive utility of cognitive and coping styles.ResultsThe follow-up sample comprised 151 participants. Differential relationships between cognitive style, coping styles and mood symptoms emerged across the bipolar sub-types. Some key differences were that a broader set of negative cognitive styles were associated with bipolar II depression symptoms; while few relationships were observed between coping styles and bipolar II symptoms.ConclusionDifferences in cognitive and coping style relationships with symptom expression across bipolar I and II disorder may provide clinicians with fruitful guides for directing treatment interventions when relevant maladaptive styles are observed. Further exploration of differences in cognitive and coping styles in bipolar I and II disorder is warranted.

Abstract:
Assuming that managerial techniques developed through experience in the domestic situation and through a synthesis of the research and writings of accepted writers in the field of management are too often taken by executives for immediate installation and ready acceptance by supervision in a different cultural setting, Mr. Carlisle decided, in 1966, to conduct a study to explore in three cultural settings the perceptions of managers of the approach used by their lower level supervisors in directing the work of employees. This paper is a presentation of this study and its findings.

Abstract:
The article analyses the significance of Head Nurses – Nursing Administrators leadership styles in health care. Proper leadership is important in every health care organization, Head Nurses need to know and be able to apply a variety of leadership styles. Managers often choose wrong leadership style without appreciating the real situation, which affects the quality of health care, increases patient and employee dissatisfaction, and makes employees less motivated to achieve their goals. Researchers emphasize that Head Nurses must have the knowledge of management science and practice in order to manage the entire department. This article discusses the main three leadership styles: transactional, transformational, and charismatic leadership styles and their principles. There are also four different leadership styles offered in the situational leadership model: directing, coaching, supporting – facilitating and delegating. It is important for managers to acquire emotional and social intelligence, they should encourage innovative thinking for individual and team productivity. Head Nurses through effective leadership styles can complete future challenges by fulfilling the mission and the vision of the health care organization.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
In order to better identify and understand the differences between Japanese and English, the task of giving walking directions was used. Japanese and American public facilities (10 each) were randomly chosen from which to collect data over the phone in order to examine these differences based on the following five communication styles: 1) politeness, 2) indirectness, 3) self-effacement, 4) back-channel feedback (Aizuchi), 5) and other linguistic and cognitive differences in relation to space and giving directions. The study confirmed what the author reviewed in the literature: Japanese are more polite, English speakers tend to give directions simply and precisely, Japanese prefer pictorial information and most Americans prefer linguistic information, Japanese is a topic-oriented language and also an addressee-oriented language. The information revealed from this study will help Japanese learners develop important skills needed for developing proficiency in the target language and also teach important differences between the two languages.

Full text
Abstract:
This research explores the field of cost and analysis planning and more precisely the efficiency of budgetary systems of quoted companies as a consequence of relationship between the strategic management of corporate officers and the scope of cost and analysis controllers. Our issues are the examinations of clarifying variables in the configuration of the budgetary system, and more precisely the management style of the corporate officers, as well as the budget emphasis so as to determine their role concerning the efficiency in the control and the mix of behavioural and structural patterns which can explain the controller's scope. Our research methodology is based on successive re-iterations of scientific observations in the field (a « qualimetric » approach, at the same time based on qualitative, quantitative and financial data) so as to establish a conceptual model explaining the interaction of different variables (style of management, configuration, budget emphasis, scope) and realising a typological analysis of different efficiency forms of the budgetary system

Full text
Abstract:
Les données défendent la thèse selon laquelle la mindfulness est une ressource mobilisable pour induire des comportements organisationnels positifs<br>Mindfulness is a fundamental concept which has existed since the dawn of time in meditative circles. These days it is a psychological construct that is the focus of much writing, and tested therapeutic technique, notably in stress reduction and in depressive relapse prevention (Bishop et al., 2004 ; Brown, Ryan et Creswell, 2007 ; Grossman et al., 2004). Mindfulness and its effects on management practice are the focus of a limited number of studies (Dane, 2010 ; Good et al., 2016). Our hypothesis is that mindfulness is a psychological construct that is doubly beneficial to managers: on the one hand, by supporting a more balanced approach to work, and on the other hand, by promoting the adoption of more positive and better performing leadership models (transformational, authentic, servant). Our research makes use of a mixed methodology. A systematic literature review enables us to define this emerging field. An informal study of 7 business managers carried out over 2 years and following a longitudinal qualitative protocol identified changes in terms of work relationships and management styles. Finally, a model using positive types of leadership as mediator variables in relationships between mindfulness and performance is recommended. Two quantitative studies were carried out to test the model. The data support the hypothesis that mindfulness is a resource that can be used to bring about positive organizational behaviour

Abstract:
AbstractThis chapter examines the relationship between author interviews and literary advice across the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. It draws on case studies in the form of two interview series: the interwar “How Writers Work” series, published in the British periodical Everyman, and the “Art of Fiction” series, published in the American magazine The Paris Review from 1953 onward. It also discusses the explosion of author interviews in the era of online media. The chapter argues that the author interview is an expansive form, encouraging readers of all types to bring their own agendas and reading styles to the text, including but not limited to reading for advice. The very ambiguity of the relationship between author interviews and literary advice has in fact worked in the former’s favor: enabling it to gain both popularity and prestige in an era of professionalized literary studies.

The results showed that leadership styles in adult basketball players are expressed to a greater extent than in young basketball players. Adult basketball players are more likely to have directive leadership, support leadership and participatory leadership.

Abstract:
Due to the increasing demand for alternative energy sources and the reliability of wind turbines, the performance of different horizontal-axis wind turbine blade designs were investigated and compared through computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling and wind tunnel testing. The Eppler 423 airfoil was of particular interest. In avionics the blade has been associated with high lift and a low tendency to stall, yet little is known about its performance in wind turbines. In both physical testing and ANSYS CFX 11.0 analysis, the airfoil significantly outperformed a Nordtank 41/500 turbine blade. Wind tunnel tests were performed on 12-inch diameter ABS polymer prototypes, created with a 3D printer. To exaggerate the features of each prototype and obtain more measureable differences in turbine performance, the blades are scaled down more in the radial direction than in the profile section directions. The Eppler 423 airfoil design was tested at different blade base angles. The testing identified an optimum power production for a blade base angle of 25°. In the ANSYS CFX computer simulations, the moments on to the turbine blade due to the incoming air allowed for the power generated and the coefficient of power (Cp) to be determined and compared. The Eppler profile outperformed the Nordtank blade profile in these simulations.

Abstract:
Magnesium and its alloys have been found to potential candidates for biodegradable implant applications. However, magnesium and its alloys are broadly known to have poor tribological properties, but detailed specifics on wear performance are scarce. This research investigates the tribological characteristics on Mg-Zn-Ca-RE alloys and pure magnesium under as-cast and extruded conditions. Pure magnesium and Mg-Zn-Ca-RE alloys were hot extruded at 350°C and 400°C. Magnesium and Mg-Zn-Ca-Re alloy were also cast at 350°C and heat treated at 510°C. Directional wear properties were investigated using a CETR-UMT 2 microtribometer under unlubricated conditions in a reciprocating configuration for 120 cycles, with normal loads ranging from 0.5N–2.5N. Wear tests were conducted in directions: cross-sectional, longitudinal (along the extrusion direction) and transverse direction (perpendicular to the extrusion direction). Wear properties and friction properties were analyzed using a microtribometer, a mechanical stylus profiler, and microindentation. Surface morphology and microstructure were characterized using optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and optical profilometry. The results show a lower wear rate in the transverse and cross-sectional direction compared to the longitudinal direction.

Abstract:
The debate on inculcating effective design engineering learning - its fundamental conceptualization, application of theoretical constructs to model physical devices/systems, and development of tools for solving unstructured problems - and associated critical thinking has primarily focused on curricula issues. Little effort has been made to understand the cognitive underpinning of students that lends to success in this direction. This paper presents the findings of a transverse study to assess learning styles of undergraduate mechanical engineering students and their perceptions about design engineering. Survey results from a batch of sophomores and seniors are analyzed to ascertain: (i) aspects of learning styles that are conducive to design comprehension, and (ii) perceptions about design engineering that aid or impede such learning.
