Full text
Abstract:
Hedge funds represent discretionary pools of capital that have very flexible investment strategies. Some funds allocate capital to derivative-based strategies on a global basis, loosely referred to as global macro funds. These investments are typically high-level, directional views on exchange rates, volatility, interest rates and other macro-related factors. In short, this “go anywhere” strategy often uses futures, forwards, and options on equities as well as interest rates and currencies. The investment manager employs top-down investments by placing high-level bets at the country level as well as taking positions in stock, currency, and derivatives on particular countries based on economic views. Many global macro funds increasingly use systematic managed futures, although fewer funds follow a discretionary managed futures strategy.

Full text
Abstract:
“Two-stroke” apparent motion is a powerful illusion of directional motion generated by alternating just two animation frames, which occurs when a brief blank interframe interval is inserted at alternate frame transitions. This chapter discusses this illusion, which can be explained in terms of the receptive field properties of motion-sensing neurons in the human visual system. The temporal response of these neurons contains both an excitatory phase and an inhibitory phase; when the timing of the interframe interval just matches the switch in response sign, the illusion occurs. Concepts covered in this chapter include four-stroke as well as two-stroke apparent motion, motion aftereffect, and motion detection.

Abstract:
Snyder’s hope theory defines hope as a cognitively based construct that consists of two components: agency, the willpower to achieve a goal, and pathways, the perceived ability to generate ways to achieve that goal. Hope has been consistently linked to positive outcomes in many life domains, including aspects of positive mental health. This chapter reviews the literature on hope and positive aspects of mental health, including specific findings regarding the impact of hope on subjective, psychological, and social well-being. It also explores findings regarding the potential moderating role of gender, age, race, ethnicity, culture, and other demographic factors on the influence of hope on well-being. Future directions on hope and well-being research are discussed as well.

Abstract:
This chapter explores the key factors involved in the interaction between religion and globalization. It highlights the roles played by transnational networks, fields, and regimes, as well as migrant and religious diasporas, mass culture, and electronic media in the global circulation and appropriation of religious practices, beliefs, symbols, artifacts, and identities. Using the examples of religious networks associated with Islam, Hinduism, and Christianities, the chapter also argues that while the economic dimensions of religion in a context of globalization are central, the dynamics of global religious fields cannot be reduced to those of the world capitalist system. Religious flows and networks are multi-directional. There is thus a need to develop interdisciplinary and multi-sited approaches to these flows and networks, examining the ways in which they challenge fixed center–periphery models and produce alternative power/geometries shaping religious identities, cultures, and embodied as well as spatialized ontologies.

Abstract:
Various fields of research have developed to better understand the health and behavioral effects of environmental characteristics such as air quality and the way our homes and neighborhoods are organized. A synergy of many previously disparate fields of research is underway, aided in part by recent advances in technology. Better sensors, including wearable physiological and environmental monitors, are enabling researchers to more readily study the interactions between environment characteristics and both mental and physical well-being. This new evidence-based research direction adds a much-needed layer of quantitative data to previous, largely qualitative, findings. Moreover, an increased understanding of the environment’s effects on humans can result in not just the alleviation of negative environmental characteristics but also the promotion of positive environmental characteristics. This chapter offers samples of environmental effects on human health and well-being in the following categories: environmental quality, natural systems, sensory environments, physical activity, safety, and social connectedness.

Abstract:
Self-compassion involves being touched by and open to one’s own suffering, not avoiding or disconnecting from it, generating the desire to alleviate one’s suffering and to heal oneself with kindness. Self-compassion also involves offering nonjudgmental understanding to one’s pain, inadequacies, and failures, so that one’s experience is seen as part of the larger human experience. This chapter will provide an overview of theory and research on self-compassion and its link to psychological well-being, which is the goal of clinical practice. It will discuss what self-compassion is and what it is not (e.g., a form of weakness, selfishness, etc.), and provide empirical evidence to support these distinctions. Finally, it will discuss methods that have been developed to teach individuals how to be more self-compassionate in their daily lives, some clinical implications of self-compassion training, and future directions for research.

Abstract:
From childhood to millennials and beyond, we need to take a life-course approach to occupation and work when in pain. In ‘Foundations’, we provide a critical account of the nature of work, and of pain. In ‘Investigations’, we analyse bi-directional relationships between children living with chronic pain and parents; between being a child in pain and schooling; what it is to be a millennial in pain; the implications of pain which is determined to be occupational in origin; and enabling a life lived well with pain as one ages. Our ‘Interventions’ section critically reviews what individuals can change, what workplaces can do, and how governments can innovate to try to maximize workability for people living with pain in the context of current working practices. Through a better understanding of how and why people seek to be occupied, we can maximize their social and personal involvement when living with ongoing pain.

Full text
Abstract:
Charles Hallpike decided that greater precision could be obtained with the caloric test by measurement of one or more attributes of the responses to some suitably graded stimulus. He chose to measure the duration of induced nystagmus. Hallpike chose water at 30°C and 44°C (7°C below and above body temperature, respectively) and allowed it to flow for 40 seconds. These temperatures were generally well tolerated, and the comparatively large quantity of water and rapid flow minimized errors due to misdirecting the stream within the ear canal. A simple chart was used to summarize the results of the bithermal caloric test. The chart consisted of two continuous lines, each representing a total of a 3-minute period, subdivided into 10-second intervals. Hallpike conducted a series of experiments on the phenomenon of directional preponderance with caloric testing and emphasized the importance of vestibular tonus originating from the inner ear receptors.

Abstract:
This chapter reviews the fast-growing body of research on the personal and interpersonal benefits of compassion, discussing its evolutionary roots and distinguishing it from similar feelings states such as empathy. It reviews research that examines compassion as a trait, as a type of meditation practice, as a feature of organizations, and discusses intervention programs designed to enhance compassion for others. It provides an overview of research on the psychological health benefits of self-compassion, including its role in motivation, resilience, and relationship functioning, while also distinguishing the construct from self-esteem. Training programs designed to increase self-compassion are discussed. It considers future research directions, including the role culture plays in the prevalence and expression of compassion, the developmental trajectory of compassion and how compassion might be taught to youth, and a consideration of the complex relation between compassion for self and others.
