Abstract:

Weltweit gibt es einen harten Wettbewerb um Investitionen. Jedes Land versucht immer mehr Direktinvestitionen anzulocken, weil diese einer der wichtigsten Faktoren für die Entwicklung eines Landes sind und die Verwendung moderner Technologien fördern. Außerdem werden Statistiken über Direktinvestitionen sehr genau beobachtet. Im ersten Teil der Arbeit werden die theoretischen Aspekte des Themas vorgelegt, d.h. es wird der Begriff der Direktinvestition erklärt, die Arten der Direktinvestitionen unterschieden, in die Motive eingedrungen und es wird über die Risiken, die mit den Direktinvestitionen verbunden sind, gesprochen. Auch die Kommunikationskanäle zwischen Investor und Zielland, und wie diese helfen können einander zu finden, werden erläutert. Im analytischen Teil der Arbeit werden mit den grafischen und vergleichenden Methoden und mit der Verwendung der Statistischen Daten, die in den Tabellen und Grafiken vorgelegt sind, die deutschen Direktinvestitionen in die neuen Mitgliedstaaten der EU ausgewertet. Zuerst wird ein Überblick über die deutschen Direktinvestitionen im Allgemeinen geschaffen, danach wird die ganze Aufmerksamkeit auf die neuen Beitrittsländer – Litauen, Lettland, Estland – konzentriert. Im letzten Kapitel des zweiten Teils werden die deutschen Investitionen im Baltikum mit den deutschen Investitionen in einem anderem neuen Land, Ungarn, verglichen. Pasaulyje nuolat vyksta aktyvi kova dėl investicijų. Kiekviena šalis stengiasi pritraukti jų kuo daugiau, nes tiesioginės užsienio investicijos yra vienas iš svarbiausių šalies ūkio vystymąsi skatinančių veiksnių, stimuliuojančių modernių technologijų diegimą, be to tiesioginių užsienio investicijų statistika yra viena iš atidžiausiai stebimų mokėjimų ir tarptautinių investicijų balansų dalių. Pirmoje darbo dalyje pateikiami teoriniai problemos aspektai, t.y. aiškinama tiesioginių investicijų sąvoka, išskiriamos investicijų rūšys, gilinamasi į investicijų motyvus, apžvelgiama su investicijomis susijusi rizika bei kalbama apie komunikacijos kanalus, t. y. apie susipažinimo bei tarpininkavimo galimybes tarp investuotojo bei šalies, į kurią norima investuoti. Analitinėje darbo dalyje taikant grafinį bei aprašomąjį tyrimo metodus, t. y. naudojant statistinius duomenis, kurie pateikiami grafiniu bei lentelių pavidalu, analizuojamos Vokietijos investicijos į naująsias Europos Sąjungos valstybes. Pirmiausiai bendrai apžvelgiamos Vokietijos investicijos, o toliau visas dėmesys sukoncentruojamas į naująsias Europos Sąjungos valstybes – Lietuvą, Latviją ir Estiją. Paskutiniame analitinės dalies skyriuje vokiečių investicijos į Baltijos šalis lyginamos su vokiečių investicijomis į kitą naujają Europos Sąjungos narę – Vengriją. Worldwide, there is a fierce competition for investment. Each country always tries to attract more direct investment, because this one of the most important factors for the development of a country and the use of modern technologies. In addition, statistics on foreign direct investment very closely monitored. In the first part of the theoretical aspects of the subject, it is the concept of direct investment explains the types of direct investments made in the motives and it is intruded on the risks associated with direct investment are spoken. The channels of communication between investor and the target country, and how they can help each other, are explained. In the analytical part of the work with the graphic and comparative methods and the use of statistical data in tables and graphs are presented, the German direct investment in the new EU Member States evaluated. First, an overview of the German direct investment in general, then the whole attention to the new accession countries - Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia - concentrated. In the last chapter of the second part, the German investment in the Baltics with the German investment in another new country, Hungary, compared. Abstract:

This paper analyzes the effects of legal uncertainty around corporate income taxation on foreign direct investment (FDI). Legal uncertainty can take many forms: double tax agreements, different types of legal systems and corruption. We test the effect of legal uncertainty on foreign direct investment with an international panel. We find that an increase in the ratio of the statutory corporate income tax rate of the destination relative to the source country exhibits a negative impact on foreign direct investment. Interacting the statutory corporate income tax rate with measures of legal uncertainty, we observe a negative effect.

Abstract:

This paper analyses the transfer of standardized products by FDI between industrial countries, newly industrialized countries and developing countries. One focus of this study is the question whether local entrepreneurs can acquire knowledge as joint venture partners and utilize this knowlegde for an outgoing investment in a third country. This requires that the local entrepreneurs have access to product, production process and management know how. This paper proposses the hypothesis, that the transfer of simple, standardized products can be explained with the catching-up product cycle. In the empirical part, Japanese FDI in Taiwan are compared with Taiwanese FDI in China in the branches electric & electronic and automobile parts. Case studies supplement this research. There two major findings. Taiwanese-Japanese joint ventures are operating successfully in China. The Taiwanese side has acquired at least management know-how in co-operation with the Japanese.

Abstract:

A bulk of empirical literature has emerged that explores the role of various location factors as determinants of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in Central and Eastern European Countries (CEECs). A notable feature of these studies is that their empirical approaches abstract from third-country (spatial) effects in FDI across the home and host country dimensions. Neglecting these effects could bias results concerning the role of location factors for attracting FDI. This in turn may lead to misguided economic policy conclusions. The current paper adds to the literature by applying the recently proposed spatial "origin-destinationow model" of LeSage and Pace (2008) to FDI ows from 7 Western OECD home countries to 8 CEE host countries. Controlling for country-pair and time effects our results indicate that (a) spatial interactions across the host country dimension matter for FDI revealing that vertical complex FDI ows dominate total FDI ows to CEECs; (b) spatial autocorrelation in the home country dimension is absent; (c) results of previous studies remain valid as coefficient estimates on location factors change only slightly when spatial interdependencies are considered and (d) effective corporate income taxes and the endowment with production-related material infrastruc- ture are statistically and economically signifficant determinants of FDI in CEECs. Abstract:

Empirical trade economists have found that shocks on foreign direct investment (FDI) of some parent country in a host country affect the same parent country´s FDI in other hosts (interdependent hosts). Independent of this, there is evidence that shocks on a parent country´s FDI in some host economy affect other parent countries´ FDI in the same host (interdependent parents). In general equilibrium, shocks on FDI between any country pair will affect all country-pairs´ FDI in the world, including anyone of the two countries in a pair as well as third countries (interdependent third countries). No attempt has been made so far to allow simultaneously for all three modes of interdependence of FDI. Using cross-sectional data on FDI among 22 OECD countries in 2000, we employ a spatial feasible generalized two-stage least squares and generalized moments estimation framework to allow for all three modes of interdependence across all parent and host countries, thereby distinguishing between market-size-related and remainder interdependence. Our results highlight the complexity of multinational enterprises´ investment strategies and the interconnectedness of the world investment system (authors' abstract).

Zur Versorgung ausländischer Märkte bedienen sich Unternehmen unterschiedlicher Versorgungsformen. Die proximity-concentration trade-off-Literatur betrachtet die Wahl zwischen Export und Auslandsproduktion und erklärt die Entstehung von internationalem Handel und horizontalen ausländischen Direktinvestitionen. Das Standardmodell von Brainard (1993) integriert die Auslandsproduktion als alternative Versorgungsform zum Handel in ein allgemeines Gleichgewichtsmodell mit zwei Ländern, monopolistischer Konkurrenz, steigenden Skalenerträgen und Transportkosten. Im Gleichgewicht versorgen Unternehmen ausländische Märkte entweder durch Exporte oder eine Auslandsproduktion. Die real zu beobachtende Ko-Existenz von internationalem Handel und ausländischen Direktinvestitionen auf der Unternehmensebene kann mit diesem Modell nicht erklärt werden. Im Rahmen dieser Arbeit wird die Exportplattform (EP) als mögliche Antwort auf dieses Phänomen herangezogen. Eine Exportplattform ist eine Auslandsproduktion, durch die nicht nur der lokale Auslandsmarkt, sondern auch Drittländer versorgt werden. Im modelltheoretischen Teil dieser Arbeit wird ein partialanalytisches EP-Modell formuliert, dass auf Brainard (1993) aufbaut. Dabei wird ihr Modell um eine Mehr-Länder-Welt mit heterogener Verteilungsstruktur erweitert und die Versorgungsalternative der EP-Exporte nach dem Beispiel von Neary (2002) integriert. Durch die analytische Lösung des partiellen Gleichgewichts lässt sich die substitutive Beziehung zwischen Heimatexporten, Auslandsproduktion und EP-Exporten aufzeigen. Ferner kann die Wirkung der Versorgungskosten auf die Versorgungswahl analysiert werden. Dabei wird neben der analytischen Modellbeschreibung besonders auf die Gleichgewichtsbestimmung und die Existenz der Gleichgewichte eingegangen. Aufbauend auf den analytisch abzuleitenden Hypothesen wird das EP-Modell ferner einem empirischen Signifikanztest unterzogen. Unter Anwendung von nicht-linearen Regressionsverfahren wird die Wahl zwischen EP-Exporten und Auslandsproduktion, zwischen EP- und Heimatexporten sowie zwischen EP-Exporten und der EP-Produktion separat geschätzt. Hierfür wird auf Daten der Automobilindustrie zurückgegriffen, welche die regionalen PKW-Produktions- und -Absatzdaten sämtlicher Automobilhersteller in Osteuropa, Asien und Ozeanien umfassen.
The proximity-concentration trade-off literature explains the choice between international trade and foreign direct investments. In this book, the co-existence of international trade and foreign direct investments is explained by analyzing the choice of export platforms. First, a partial equilibrium model with monopolistic competition, increasing economies of scale, trade costs and fixed costs is developed and enhanced with a heterogeneous, spatial distribution of regions. Second, hypothesis are tested with international trade and production data from the automotive industry.

Abstract:

In der vorliegenden Arbeit werden verschiedene Fragestellungen zur Integration und Transformation auf den europäischen Agrar- und Ernährungsmärkten untersucht. Eine Weiterentwicklung der Gemeinsamen Agrarpolitik, die anstehende Osterweiterung der Europäischen Union (EU) sowie Auswirkungen von Ausländischen Direktinvestitionen (ADI) im Ernährungssektor mittel- und osteuropäischer Transformationsländer werden mit Hilfe von partiellen und allgemeinen Gleichgewichtsmodellen simuliert. Das Ziel der Arbeit ist die separate, quantitative Analyse ausgewählter Aspekte der Integration und Transformation sowie das Aufzeigen von Wechselwirkungen zwischen ihnen. Die Ergebnisse sollen dazu dienen, die politischen Rahmenbedingungen in der europäischen Agrar- und Ernährungswirtschaft zu verbessern. Als Hauptinstrumente einer neuen EU-Agrarpolitik werden einheitliche Boden- und Arbeitssubventionen verbunden mit einem weiteren Abbau des Außenschutzes untersucht. Diese würden zu wesentlich geringeren Verzerrungen auf den Produktmärkten und zu deutlichen Budgeteinsparungen gegenüber der derzeitigen Situation führen. Eine einheitliche Bodensubvention mit einer weitergehenden Liberalisierung wird auch als Politikoption für die EU-Osterweiterung analysiert. Der Handel mit Agrar- und Ernährungsgütern innerhalb einer erweiterten EU würde sich in einigen Szenarien verdoppeln. Durch Handelsgewinne und Transferzahlungen aus dem EU-Budget käme es in den Beitrittsländern zu einem Wohlfahrtsgewinn in Höhe von etwa zwei Prozent des Bruttosozialprodukts. Die Bedeutung von ADI im Transformationsprozeß sollte nicht überschätzt werden. Die Modellrechnungen ergeben, daß der Zustrom von ADI seit 1992 zu einem zusätzlichen jährlichen Wachstum des Bruttosozialprodukts von unter einem Prozent in den mitteleuropäischen Ländern und in den Nachfolgestaaten der Sowjetunion geführt hat. Durch zusätzlichen Technologietransfer profitiert die Agrarwirtschaft nicht immer von ADI in der Nahrungsmittelverarbeitung. Grund hierfür sind zum Teil Einsparungen bei der Verwendung landwirtschaftlicher Rohprodukte. Schließlich zeigt die Analyse von ADI in der polnischen Zuckerindustrie, daß handelspolitische Eingriffe, wie z.B. Produktionsquoten, die lokalen Auswirkungen von ADI stark beeinflussen können. ADI sind nur dann deutlich wohlfahrtssteigernd, wenn sie auf relativ unverzerrten Märkten getätigt werden. Die verbesserte Wettbewerbssituation in der Zuckerindustrie würde zu teilweise deutlichen Gewinnen für die Zuckerrübenproduzenten führen.
This dissertation consists of four essays covering various aspects of integration and transition on European agricultural and food markets. Further reform of the European Union's (EU) Common Agricultural Policy, a prospective Eastern enlargement, and the effects of foreign direct investment (FDI) in food industries of the transition countries are analyzed using partial as well as general equilibrium modeling approaches. The overall objective of the study is to quantify these processes separately as well as to demonstrate various interactions between them. The results should be useful for improving the political and economic environment in the European agricultural and food sector. In the discussion about further reform of the Common Agricultural Policy, uniform payments on agricultural land and labor have been proposed in connection with further reductions of border protection. The analysis shows that these policy options would be much less distortionary on product markets and they would lead to significant reductions in budget expenditures compared to the present situation. Furthermore, a uniform payment on land together with further liberalization is also analyzed as a policy option for the EU Eastern enlargement. Trade in agricultural and food products in an enlarged EU would double in some scenarios. Gains from trade and transfer payments from the EU budget would add up to a welfare gain of about two percent of total gross domestic product in the new member countries. The impact of FDI in the transition process should not be over-estimated. The model calculations show that total FDI inflows since 1992 induced additional economic growth of less than one percent per year in the Central European countries and the former Soviet Union. Additional transfers of new technologies into the food industry do not necessarily improve the situation in primary agriculture. The reason is partly input saving technical change which reduces the demand for agricultural raw products. Finally, the analysis of FDI in the Polish sugar industry reveals that trade policy interventions, like production quotas, have a strong influence on the local impact of FDI. Foreign investment is welfare improving to the local economy only if it occurs on more or less undistorted markets. Improved competition in the sugar industry would lead to considerable gains for local sugar beet producers.

Abstract:

Since the 2000s, India has emerged as one of the top recipients of foreign direct investment (FDI) amongst the emerging markets. Yet, the international business (IB) literature on FDI flows into India is still nascent. Recent developments have not been adequately covered and a coherent theoretical framework guiding a contextualized discussion is rarely utilized. This three paper dissertation seeks to explore the idiosyncrasies of post-millennial India and how they connect to the current motivation of foreign multinational enterprises (MNEs) to invest into the Indian market. While the research is theory-driven, the empirical findings provide a new perspective to the IB debate by helping to better understand the sensitivity of FDI decisions to various phenomena in India’s economic, institutional and social fabric in the 2000s. Both the recent diversification within knowledge-intensive industries and the various pro-market reforms that are increasingly bearing fruits have created new opportunities for foreign MNEs – especially for those targeting India’s tertiary sector and its large specialized talent base.
