Abstract:
It would take a long time to solve the point kinetics equations by using full implicit Runge-Kutta (FIRK) for the strong stiffness. Diagonally implicit Runge-Kutta (DIRK) is a useful tool like FIRK to solve the stiff differential equations, while it could greatly reduce the computation compared to FIRK. By embedded low-order Runge-Kutta, DIRK is implemented with the time step adaptation technique, which improves the computation efficiency of DIRK. Through four typical cases with step, ramp sinusoidal and zig-zag reactivity insertions, it shows that the results obtained by DIRK are in perfect agreement with other available results and DIRK with adaptive time step technique has more efficiency than DIRK with the fixed time step.

Abstract:
Neutron kinetics plays an important role in reactor safety and analysis. The backward Euler method is the most widely used time integration method in the calculation of space-dependent nuclear reactor kinetics. Diagonally Implicit Runge-Kutta (DIRK) method owns high accuracy and excellent stability and it could be applied to the neutron kinetics for hexagonal-z geometry application. As solving the neutron kinetics equations is very time-consuming and the number of available cores continues to increase with parallel architectures evolving, parallel algorithms need to be designed to utilize the available resources effectively. However, it is difficult to parallel in time axis since the later moment is strongly dependent on the previous moment. In this paper, the Parareal method which is a time parallel method and implemented by MPI in the processor level is studied in the hexagonal-z geometry with the help of DIRK method. In order to make good use of the parallelism, a parallel strategy in the space direction is also used. In the coarse nodal method, many same operations are finished in the nodes and these operations could be parallel by OpenMP in the thread level since they are independent. Several transient cases are used to validate this method. The results show that the Parareal method gets a fast-convergent speed such as only 2∼3 iterations are needed to convergent. This space-time parallel method could reduce the cost time compared to the sequential method.

Abstract:
A numerical method (SIMPLE DIRK Method) for transient incompressible viscous flow simulation is presented. The proposed method can be used to achieve arbitrarily high order of accuracy in time-discretization which is otherwise limited to second order in majority of the currently available simulation techniques. A special class of implicit Runge-Kutta methods is used for time discretization in conjunction with finite volume based SIMPLE algorithm. The algorithm was tested by solving for velocity field in a lid-driven square cavity. In the test case calculations, power law scheme of Patankar [2] was used for spatial discretization and time discretization was performed using a second-order implicit Runge-Kutta method. Time evolution of velocity profile along the cavity centerline was obtained from the proposed method and compared with that obtained from a commercial CFD software, FLUENT [3] using second-order implicit time discretization scheme. Steady state solution from the present method was compared with the benchmark numerical solution of Ghia et al. [4]. Good agreement of the second-order solutions of the proposed method with the second-order solutions of FLUENT [4] and Ghia et al. [4] concludes the feasibility of the proposed method.

Abstract:
PNP was first proposed as a potentially interesting nonlinear optical crystal by Twieg and Dirk.1 They reported second- harmonic efficiencies of powdered materials of the order of 160 X urea. But so far, only small (≃0.2- × 0.2- X 0.3-mm3) single crystals of PNP have been grown. Furthermore, the solubility of PNP is too high from isooctane and toluene. In view of the above, PNP warranted a further detailed study. For PNP single crystals to grow and for investigation of nonlinear optical properties in technology, we must first choose suitable solvents and techniques for single crystal growth in bulk. In the present report, the dopant effects on habit of PNP single crystals are studied. We have made an attempt at Nd3+, Cd2+, Al3+, Pr3+, and a mixture of Nd3+ and Cd2+ doping into the solution of PNP. Nd:PNP and Cd:PNP certainly provide single crystals as good as can be obtained. It is assumed that Nd3+ solvents influence the mechanism of the growth, giving rise to the formation of less growth defects. Increasing solubility thus will lead to increased growth rate unless other factors interfere with this process.
