Abstract:

When working in the terrain of text processing, metadata about a particular text plays an important role. Metadata is often generated using automatic text classification systems which classifies a text into one or more predefined classes or categories based on its contents. One of the dimensions by which a text can be can be classified, is the genre of a text. In this study the development of an automatic genre classification system in a resource scarce environment is postulated. This study aims to: i) investigate the techniques and approaches that are generally used for automatic genre classification systems, and identify the best approach for Afrikaans (a resource scarce language), ii) transfer this approach to other indigenous South African resource scarce languages, and iii) investigate the effectiveness of technology recycling for closely related languages in a resource scarce environment. To achieve the first goal, five machine learning approaches were identified from the literature that are generally used for text classification, together with five common approaches to feature extraction. Two different approaches to the identification of genre classes are presented. The machine learning-, feature extraction- and genre class identification approaches were used in a series of experiments to identify the best approach for genre classification for a resource scarce language. The best combination is identified as the multinomial naïve Bayes algorithm, using a bag of words approach as features to classify texts into three abstract classes. This results in an f-score (performance measure) of 0.929 and it was subsequently shown that this approach can be successfully applied to other indigenous South African languages. To investigate the viability of technology recycling for genre classification systems for closely related languages, Dutch test data was classified using an Afrikaans genre classification system and it is shown that this approach works well. A pre-processing step was implemented by using a machine translation system to increase the compatibility between Afrikaans and Dutch by translating the Dutch texts before classification. This results in an f-score of 0.577, indicating that technology recycling between closely related languages has merit. This approach can be used to promote and fast track the development of genre classification systems in a resource scarce environment.

One of the main problem affecting modern propulsor design engineers is the ability to quantitatively predict unsteady propeller forces for modern, multi-blade row, ducted propulsors operating in highly contracting flowfields. Current algorithms provide valuable insight into qualitative trendlines for these modern designs. This thesis has focused on the more accurate quantitative force prediction by introducing more physical modeling into the numerical computations, using more accurate analytical representation of continuous physical phenomena, whilst not increasing the usage complexity for the desktop engineer. This thesis developed several novel algorithms and techniques and applied them to build an evolutionary, general vortex-lattice lifting-surface propeller code. First, a general method to track the trajectory of individual wake singularity sheets and compute their influence velocities was evolved which reduces computation time, and dramatically increases the accuracy of the unsteady blade loading problem. To improve the general coupling technique between potential-based propeller codes and volumetric Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes codes, a general analytic method based upon an elliptic integral method for the velocity induced by a vortex ring of unsteady harmonic strength to compute of the time-averaged induced velocities in the swept volume of the propeller was introduced which is more accurate, as demonstrated in model problems, and more robust, as indicated by improved convergence and accuracy in a fully three dimensional propeller code.
(cont.) A discretized geometric technique was also created to internalize the coupling routines, making the code more robust, while decreasing the computation burden over currect methods. Finally, a higher order quadratic influence function technique was implemented within the wake to more accurately define the induction velocity at the trailing edge which has suffered in the past due to lack of discretization. These propeller propgram enhancements were fitted into a fully functional version of the Propeller Unsteady Forces (PUF)-series code, and coupled with a three dimensional RANS code.

Eerstens word daar samevattende gegewens verskaf i.v.m. sy huislike milieu, veral gemik op sy ouers en ouerhuis. Die Meerkotterstamboom wat daarna volg, gee ‘n interessante gesinsbeeld. Tweedens volg ‘n kort, noodsaaklike paragraaf oor die geografiese milieu van Dirk Meerkotter. Vir die sensitiewe gees van veral die kunstenaar, sal die gegewens later in die bespreking uitkristalliseer as van besonder vormende waarde. Laasgenoemde het sy oorsprong gehad in jeugindrukke tydens die verblyf op verskillende plekke, maar veral Johannesburg en omgewing. Laastens volg ‘n skematiese voorstelling in die vorm van n tydlyn. Hier kan dan met die ontvouing daarvan gesien word datums, Meerkotter se ouderdom op verskillende stadiums van sy ontwikkeling, woonplekke, skoolopleiding, studentejare, uitstallings, reise oorsee en ander belangrike gebeurtenisse in sy lewe. Daar word ook n aanduiding gegee van 'n periode-indeling van sy stylontwikkeling.
