Full textThis exploratory case study examined family-school-community engagement in a small New England school district and town that is home to a federally recognized Indigenous Tribe that has inhabited the area for 12,000 years and whose children represent the largest group of racially minoritized students in the public schools. Using Indigenous protocols and methodologies that included relational accountability, individual semi-structured conversations, talking circles, and participant observation, this study explored the ways that Indigenous families and community members as well as district educators conceptualized and practiced family-school-community engagement and whether or not their conceptualizations and practices were aligned and culturally sustaining/revitalizing. Family-school-community engagement has been touted in research literature as a remedy to the problem of low achievement that prevails in many schools serving minoritized students, including Indigenous students. However, a more pertinent reason to study this topic is due to “ongoing legacies of colonization, ethnocide, and linguicide” committed against Indigenous families and their children by colonial governments and their educational institutions (Brayboy, 2005; Grande, 2015; McCarty & Lee, 2014, p. 103). This study was thus conducted and data were analyzed using a decolonizing lens and culturally responsive leadership (Johnson, 2014), culturally sustaining pedagogy (Paris & Alim, 2014), and culturally sustaining/revitalizing pedagogy (McCarty & Lee, 2014) as theoretical frameworks. Findings revealed distinctions in the priorities and engagement practices of educators versus Tribal members. While educators conceptualized and reported to practice an open-door model of engagement in which families have a plethora of opportunities to get involved in the schools, Indigenous parents and community leaders engaged as ardent advocates for the equitable treatment of their children and for the expansion of language and culture-based programming for tribal students in educational spaces within and outside of the public-school system. Also, Educators and Tribal members alike acknowledged that district staff lack cultural awareness and sensitivity and needed to be better educated. These findings and others offer important implications for local Indigenous communities and school districts serving Indigenous families

This study aims at analyzing evidentiality and epistemic modality and their relationship with the level of engagement of a scientific article writer and the stated content. To the description and analysis of the data it is used the functional perspective on language, in which the language is not understood as an independent object, but as a system under the pressure of communicative situations. Thus, this investigation focuses on the expressions in use, trying to understand the functioning of the language, since it is through the use that the expressions acquire meaning. In order to make this research possible the corpus used is constituted by 9 scientific articles taken from Linguistics annals published within the years of 2008 and 2009. We have chosen the analysis of evidentiality and epistemic modality as functional domains which mark the level of engagement of a scientific article writer since we have as a presupposition that in such case, we may find several registers of these categories used as detachment strategies, considering that the author of this type of writing leads towards objectiveness as stipulated by manuals of scientific methodology, getting detached from the content to preserve the work scientific style. 410 occurrences have been collected and analyzed concerning synthetic (means of expressions and position of evidential marks in the statement), semantic (type of domain and source of the evidential manifestation), and pragmatic (level of commitment of a scientific article writer with the stated content, and the presence of explicit marks of adhesion) aspects. The results proved that evidentiality and epistemic modality are used in scientific texts to promote an effect of medium engagement, revealing that the scientific discourse is marked by the use of expressions that mask the authorâs subjectivity and highlight their partial engagement with the established truth. Concerning the means of expressions used, we observed that scientific article writers prefer the use of evidential and epistemic modal manifestations expressed through verbal items. Regarding the analyzed genre, it has been found more occurrences related to the reported evidentiality from a definite source, with interspersed marks between the source of information and the established content.

Full textIn the course of the last 30 years, the word banlieue has evoked the territorial movement of a social problem as the historical expert of the Parisian suburbs, Annie Fourcaut, substantiates. The banlieue which have been much in vogue in the mass media and political debates especially since the first 1990 mass media covered urban disorders, up to the more violent ones in 2005, are to be understood as sensitive working-class areas. During the past few decades the latter seem to gather around each other and, above all, around the juveniles who inhabit them in the most oddly assorted and detrimental situations : abject social/economic poverty, residential segregation, urban decay as well as violence and delinquency. As the years have gone by, the rhetoric and the representation of those sites has become the expression of a disadvantage that the specialists call: “epicentre of the contemporary social problem”. This work of thesis deals with these current events. It sets its objective as contemplation on the contemporary literary representation of these places. Indeed, the delicate and marginal situations of banlieue during the recent urban riots, are the essential conditions that have favoured the production of an emerging literatur classified by critics as the "banlieue literature" of "cités" or urban areas"

Full textThis study focuses on a mechanism frequently used in legal practice, but, surprisingly, often ignored in international doctrine: suspension. The mechanism of suspension is to be distinguished from more radical, but arguably less interesting mechanisms, such as revocation. Suspension will be analysed within the context of both conventional and unilateral international law commitments. For the first time, a general definition of suspension will be proposed, which sets it apart from the many similar notions with which it has been confused, such as dispense, exception of inexecution, force majeure, countermeasures, reservations, …, and last but not least, denunciation and withdrawal. The proposed definition also aims to identify characteristics that are unique to suspension, as shown in treaty clauses, in diplomatic practice and case law, and as supported by « commitment theory ». The study will also clarify the legal regime of suspension, which, according to Fitzmaurice, involves « serious difficulties of classification and content ». Indeed, a closer look at suspension in practical terms reveals that there are not one, but two legal regimes of suspension. This eye-opening conclusion will not fail to engage the reader’s interest and will contribute to our further understanding of the phenomenon of suspension

Full textThis thesis seeks to explore the process and phenomenon through which Caribbean national and cultural identity has been constructed. In order to achieve this goal, two of Derek Walcott’s major poems and one of his dramas have been chosen. The first is his Creole epic poem, Omeros, which concentrates on the issues of Creole identity and the concept of national hero. Since Walcott’s poetry is highly influenced by his personal life and consequently life in his homeland, the island of Saint Lucia, it seems indispensable to study his autobiographical poem, Another Life, which is Walcott’s retrospective review of his artistic journey until the age of 33. Moreover, since Omeros draws parallelswith Homeric epics, it seems highly beneficial to this study to include his other rewriting of Homericepics, The Odyssey : a Play. This study makes an effort to show that these two rewritings are complementary to each other: the West Indian epic poem is the quest for identity seen from the point of view of the colonized subject, whereas the West Indian stage drama is the quest for identity from the colonizer’s perspective. Studying Walcott’s poetry and dramas helps one perceive the ways in which the West Indian poet makes an effort to deconstruct the importance of the Western literary tradition through rewriting the Homeric epics. This tradition perpetuates the binary opposition of superiority/inferiority which plays a seminal role in the construction of individual identity. By displacing the Saint Lucian characters and literature from their place in the margins to the center, Walcott decenters the Homeric epics, and Western literature. Full textSuccessive evaluations of French Military hospitals by the Court of Auditors point out a sub-activity that generates a deficit. The French Military Health Care Service acknowledged these points but considers that military activities (in particular participation in External Operation), may explain, at least partly, the deficit and sub-activity mentioned by the Court of Auditors. This practical question feeds the theoretical reflection conducted in this thesis. A detailed description of external operations shows that they can be considered as soft projects. These projects are characterized by the progressive determination of their goals: that are not completely known when the project starts. The literature questions adequacy of project management standards to soft projects and the following research question emerges: what is the role of stakeholders’ engagement and planning flexibility in soft projects management? The thesis is based on an intervention research. A simulation is built to objectify external operations management in military hospitals. It highlights the impact of external operations on care production and consequently on hospitals ‘deficit. Two analyses are conducted to understand the causes of this impact. First, an analysis of the current planning process of external operations suggests that renewing planning methods can be necessary to offer a flexible planning based on cooperation. Second, the simulation reveals the important role of physicians and nurses’ commitment in managing external operations. This commitment, driven by strong relationships between project stakeholders, positively influences external operations’ outcomes. These observations allow theoretical progress on management tools for soft projects. Two concepts seem particularly suited to soft projects’ constraints: interactive planning developed in companies facing high uncertainties and relational contracting described by law and economics scholars. Interactive planning brings both flexibility and cooperation that appear decisive to build a response to soft goals. Relational contracts help understand how high commitment can bring simultaneously motivation and adaptability, that are both essential to achieve soft goals. To conclude, I suggest structuring projects’ space according to the degree of determination of projects’ goals and the degree of stakeholders’ engagement in the project. These dimensions allow defining areas where project management standards will be applicable and those where they might need to be adapted to soft projects. The diversity of soft projects (public sector, international development, organizational change) calls for such a structure that can facilitate the spread of specific management tools

Thanks to their tenacity, these exiles succeeded in preserving the Catalan culture through the continuation of a strategy aimed at protecting the national heritage. This study thus seeks to understand the process of this social reorganisation, the preservation of Catalan culture and intellectual production outside of Catalonia in order to evaluate the extent to which the realisation of a suitable cultural project was possible in the particular context of exile

Full textConsidering that they represent all the customers’ valuable behaviors, engagement behaviors gain particular interests from both managers and academicians. This doctoral dissertation studies the influence of customers’ formal ownership over the firm on their engagement behaviors. Results from Study 1 (N = 26 871) reveal that customers-owners’ Customer Lifetime Value is stronger and evolve more rapidly, compared to customers-non-owners’ one. Furthermore, customers-owners present a stronger intention to recommend the firm (Customer Influencer Value). We perform a second study (N = 295) to understand the underlying process through which formal ownership influences engagement behaviors. Results introduce the importance of the psychological ownership concept, to explain how formal ownership influences Customer Knowledge Value (suggestions and complaints). These findings have implications for theory, practice, and further research

Full textThis thesis looks at how French students' ideas of the Chinese language affect their study of it. We focus on the way these ideas reflect the reasons for taking up Chinese in the first place, and how they develop as study proceeds. The first section discusses the sociolinguistic position of Chinese as it has changed over time, how its status has evolved in France and in the world. The second part lays out our concepts and the methods (questionnaires and interviews) employed in our research. In the third part we present our principal conclusions concerning students' ideas about Chinese and the effect of these on their commitment to their studies. Our relevant research lets us provide evidence confirming that these ideas have an important effect here. Actually, students evolve in their sense of the language. These changes can affect the nature and intensity of their commitment to their studies, depending on how they are when they begin, how long they stay with their study, and aims of study as they develop; also in the way they incorporate these studies into their daily lives and in their sense of the future. Sometimes these changes are influenced by externalities, having to do with sociabilty, friends, family, institutional or professional expectations. In conclusion we take the opportunity to make some suggestions, on the basis of our results, for changes in teaching Chinese which could improve classroom practice and revive the commitment of the students

Full textNew forms of governance, including citizen’s participation, are emerging in the field of public health. This thesis considers the reasons why citizens, who are involved in non governmental organisations (NGOs), are interested in new approaches of participation such as citizen's juries. The author uses theories of social movement and explores the theoretical model developed by Florence Passy for the altruistic commitment. She focuses on the parameters and determinants of the health commitment with the different objects and forms. Thirty non direct interviews were conducted with citizens. These citizens were involved in NGO health projects, neighbourhood health community workers or were involved in new mechanisms of participation like citizen's juries. She shows how the citizens legitimise and rationalise the reasons of their commitment. The author explores the specific characteristics of this commitment which question the classic dualities: individual/ collective, lay person/expert, voluntary helper/paid worker. She shows that a person who wishes to improve health reflects a mixture of the classic sociological models of militancy. The author concludes that a commitment by these people can push back frontiers and possibility is a model of future participation

Full textThis work examines the political tendencies of the "Nouvelle Gauche" in France in the period 1960-1968, which have developed (or : constituted themselves) beyond the established party structures and conventional (or better: traditional?) socialist paradigms since the end of the 1950s. Based on the concept of the "Social Field" developed by Pierre Bourdieu, the interactions between the new party structures (Parti Socialiste Unifié), intellectuals clubs, magazines (classic Nouvelle Gauche) as well as cultural movements shall be studied from the viewpoint of developing alternative approaches for the society. These different actors have in common that they developed before the riots of 1968 new theoretical approaches to the subject of work, "democratic socialism", direct democracy, colonial policy, self-government (or better: self-administration?), the public and the relationship between art and politics. The intellectual, artistic and political movements of the "new left" opposed the logic of "camps mentality” of the Cold War and developed their own political programs of a "Third Way" beyond the Marxist dogmatism and the "discredited" reformist social democracy in the Western industrialized countries. This work combines policy- and cultural-historical problems, which are handled by methods of the critique of ideology as well as discourse analysis, and starts with the foundation of the Parti Socialiste unifié (PSU) in 1960, that acted as "the amalgam of the discarded" and as "new left". 18 months before, the party Socialiste Autonome (PSA) was founded, whose followers had broken away from the socialist SFIO and are placed now in the political landscape of France between SFIO and PCF.Usually, the focus of previous studies has been and is still the history of parties in the context of international and domestic political events (war in Algeria, appeasement in the era of Khrushchev, transition from the Fourth to the Fifth Republic, rebellions in Eastern Europe against the Soviet domination). In contrast, this work shall on the one hand deal with the political, extra-parliamentary, intellectual and artistic field of the "Nouvelle Gauche" under programmatic and intellectual historical point of view, and on the other hand work out biographical and social interdependencies. The question which discourses and debates about a "Third Way" or a "democratic socialism" were held – in contrast to the Soviet model and Western social democratic or socialist concepts – is prepended this investigation. The question is risen for which reasons intellectuals, artists as well as politicians seceded from the dogmatic course of the KPF, joined undogmatic, new ways of thinking and started to develop "Third Ways" between the existing fronts of the Cold War. With respect to this background, new answers are expected to the problem how the outlined "Undogmatic" or "New Left" has been impulse and "theoretical incubator" (bin mir nicht sicher, ob das im englischen geht) for the rebellions in May 1968

Full textBased on experimental research we reviewed and thoroughly examined the paradigm of cognitive consistency. In contrast with various consistence theory predictions, we showed that people are not systematically endowed with consistent cognitive structures and do not defend themselves very carefully against ideological “aggressions” inducing inconsistency. We explained these findings by the fact that consistency has a cognitive value only in self relevant fields. On the other hand, studies on cognitive consistency gave rise to comparisons between classical formalism of graphs and a new formalism one: the graph of relationships. Both graphs converge on consistency factors. The graph of relationships underlies two new factors: assimilation and disjunction. Their analysis gave rise to psychological interpretations
