We draw on a unique dataset of 2,164 press releases related to the occurrence of 206 natural disasters (hurricanes, flooding, tornadoes, and wildfires) over a 10-year period (2005-2014) to analyze how firm responses are shaped by the type of disaster it faces. Firms play an increasingly important role in disaster response. Henrik H. Svensen’s newest book Stein på stein (Aschehaug Press) is about digging for the past, in every sense: as a geologist, as a son, as a father, as a person. It is by far the most personal of the author’s literary offerings, which include The end is near: About natural disasters and society (2006) and Bergtatt: The history of the mountains and the fascination of the elevated, which appeared in 2011.

ABSTRACT There have been many natural disasters throughout the history of the world. These disasters have brought societies and states closer and helped elevate charitable sentiments. So much so that the hostilities between states were halted and human life became the priority during times of disaster. The earthquakes that took place in Türkiye on February 6, hit number one on the global agenda, and diplomatic relations were triggered between many states in an effort to help the earthquake victims. The most important of these was undoubtedly the Organization of Turkic States (OTS), of which Tü

Digital technologies challenge the existing expectations of privacy for both individual users and societies at large. Although numerous surveys and experiments have studied how individual users respond to these challenges, we know little about such perceptions and debates in the larger public. This study investigated this question by analysing German media coverage of the issue of privacy during the current age in times of widespread digital technology. We asked which events journalists report when they broach the issue, what aspects of privacy they cover and whether the coverage refers to dif

ABSTRACTPost-traumatic stress disorder refers to the aftermath of highly traumatic events involving death, serious injury, or threat to one's physical integrity in circumstances out of the ordinary, such as war, natural disasters, rape, or torture. Four chapters of this book specifically address post-traumatic stress disorder, as a late-onset or reactivated condition, in World War II veterans and older adults who survived a natural disaster. These contributions, from American and Dutch researchers, bring first-hand information on the prevalence and course of the disorder and they constitute th

At the onset of the pandemic, LSL interpreters, like many other national sign language interpreters, were faced with a new form of live interpreting − interpreting under extreme conditions. Over the years the broadcast news interpreting has become routine for LSL interpreters and can be considered as interpreting under normal conditions. Abstract Following 9/11 and Hurricane Katrina there has been a concerted effort to prepare and organize for disasters. Blood transfusion, a key element of disaster response, has been previously documented to be an important factor in decreasing fatalities from disaster-related injuries, provided there is an organized system of transfusion. Reviews of blood usage following other domestic disasters have generally revealed only modest use of transfusable products that generally do not overwhelm local supplies of blood. We conducted a survey to enumerate the amount of blood and blood products used
