Abstract:
In this thesis, the potential of the gap discharge transducer is investigated as transducers in a time-of-flight gas flow measurement setup designed for harsh environments. In this thesis the gap discharge transducer is operated in two different modes, named spark discharge transducer and glow discharge transducer. The spark discharge transducer generates a spark over a gap while the glow discharge transducer generates a continuous glow discharge.Earlier studies show that the spark discharge transducer is very durable and a potent sound pulse emitter. This thesis continues these studies by inco

Abstract:
Long air gaps containing a floating conductor are common insulation types in power grids. During the transmission line live-line work, the process of lineman entering the transmission line air gap constitutes a live-line work combined air gap, which is a typical long air gap containing a floating conductor. This thesis investigates the discharge characteristics, the discharge mechanism and a discharge simulation model of long air gaps containing a floating conductor in order to address the engineering issues in live-line work. Abstract:
A two-dimensional numerical model for compressible branching flow through a slot is described for the purpose of predicting the discharge coefficients of film cooling holes in gas turbine blades. The method employs free-streamline theory and the hodograph transformation. It calculates the area ratio of hole to duct and the contraction coefficient from a set of prescribed boundary conditions. An approximate method for calculating the compressible contraction coefficients is also discussed in the thesis. It employs the incompressible theory previously developed by McNown and Hsu (1951) for the f

Abstract:
This thesis describes experimental and theoretical aspects of low pressure gas discharges confined by metallic walls. Simple considerations predict that the current between the anode and the cathode of a discharge tube which contains isolated cylindrical metal segments is conducted through the metal. Under certain conditions, however, a glow discharge may form along the axis of the tubes conduction occurs along the path which results in the lowest sustaining VO 1tage. Abstract:
This dissertation deals with research on the numerical modelling of electrical discharges in laboratory long air gaps excited with positive switching impulses. It begins with the preliminary work of several scientists during the last decades, making a detailed analysis of different approaches for modelling all the stages in a full discharge. The relations between these models are identified as well as the effect on the outcome when modifying some important input parameters. The general concept describing the discharge phenomenon usually includes three main elements: the streamer inception, the

The construction and operation of a small active volume, discharge pumped, rare gas halide excimer laser is described. The values of laser output parameters such as pulse duration, pulse energy and overall efficiency presently achieved with such systems are much less that theoretical studies predict. Measurements of the effect of increasing the discharge column voltage gradient were investigated using argon based mixtures with nitrogen, oxygen and sulphur hexafluoride in a plasma torch. The theoretical calculation of the voltage gradient and the electron number density was based on the Saha equation which was modified for application to the gas mixtures. The investigations showed that a mixture of Ar and SF6 was most effective and increased the voltage gradient to 0.5 V/mm from 0.3 V/mm. The best mixture was 89% Ar, 10% N2 , 1% SF6 based on the highest increase of the voltage gradient and

This thesis presents investigations of interactions of a 380 fs, 248.6 nm KrF laser beam focused to intensities up to 1018 W/cm2 with gas targets of Helium and Neon. Firstly, we determine the relative importance of plasma heating mechanisms and investigate the scaling of electron temperature with density to ascertain whether an optically-ionised XUV recombination laser, utilising the 3s-2p transition in a Lithium-like ion, is v
