AbstractThis paper is part of a broader research on the Venezuelan sociology in previous times and today. In this chance, we will make reference to the analysis of some partial results of the research: In the first place, we refer to a qualitative analysis of the definition of the graduate starting from the academic profile stated in documents such as the curricula of the Sociology Schools in Venezuelan Universities, the publication referred to the studies opportunities in the Universities in Venezuela emitted by the National Universities Bureau (CNU for its name in Spanish), from the Descriptive Manual of Jobs Classification from the Main Personnel Office and the Collegiate Law. -In the second place, we refer to the results of ten (10) case studies of Sociologists that have highlighted the development of this discipline as professionals in colleges (researches and faculties) and in the public and private administration. These professionals gave their opinions on the object of study of Sociology, relationship among the sociology schools, job offers in the market and the graduate profile; the links of sociology to other disciplines and the challenges of Sociology as a discipline and as a profession. In the third place, a qualitative-quantitative analysis of some data obtained from a survey to 62 sociologists graduated in the 90s, referred to the characterization of the sociology professional and his or her job as a sociologist (demographic information, academic information, working situation), and finally some conclusions from this research such as the existence of a mismatching between the academic profile and the professional one, a disappearance of the discipline and the profession from the job offers in the market in these globalization times and we want to open a discussion on the challenges of the Sociology as discipline and as a profession in front of the multidisciplinary environment that is making it disappear as such.Key words: Graduate profile, Job offers, Sociology, Venezuela.

Abstract:
Biodiversity conservation projects confront immediate and escalating threats with limited funding. Conservation theory suggests that the best response to the species extinction crisis is to spend money as soon as it becomes available, and this is often an explicit constraint placed on funding. We use a general dynamic model of a conservation landscape to show that this decision to “front-load” project spending can be suboptimal if a delay allows managers to use resources more strategically. Our model demonstrates the existence of temporal efficiencies in conservation management, which parallel the spatial efficiencies identified by systematic conservation planning. The optimal timing of decisions balances the rate of biodiversity decline (e.g., the relaxation of extinction debts, or the progress of climate change) against the rate at which spending appreciates in value (e.g., through interest, learning, or capacity building). We contrast the benefits of acting and waiting in two ecosystems where restoration can mitigate forest bird extinction debts: South Australia’s Mount Lofty Ranges and Paraguay’s Atlantic Forest. In both cases, conservation outcomes cannot be maximized by front-loading spending, and the optimal solution recommends substantial delays before managers undertake conservation actions. Surprisingly, these delays allow superior conservation benefits to be achieved, in less time than front-loading. Our analyses provide an intuitive and mechanistic rationale for strategic delay, which contrasts with the orthodoxy of front-loaded spending for conservation actions. Our results illustrate the conservation efficiencies that could be achieved if decision makers choose when to spend their limited resources, as opposed to just where to spend them.

Abstract:
Many cities have rediscovered and reinvented their river fronts as public spaces in recent years. From New York to Seoul, urban waterways which were forgotten, marginalized, or outright abandoned are now filled with life. In each case the transformation was spurred by a combination of grass roots, bottom-up initiative and savvy government recognition of the projects’ potentials. Once the city leaders embraced the projects - and not a moment sooner - public and private funding materialized and bureaucratic barriers disappeared. In Rome, whether due to the complexity of the chain of responsibility for the river front, or simply an ingrained aversion to progressive planning - saying no or saying nothing is much easier than taking responsibility for positive change - initiatives to renew the urban riverfront have been small and disconnected. Diverse interests ranging from green space to water transit, from river front commerce to ecological restoration, have all vied for a role in the river’s regeneration. But one particular discipline, that of art, has succeeded more than others in attracting international attention and changing the way people in Rome and throughout the (art) world see the Tiber. Artist William Kentridge, with his project ‘Triumphs and Laments’, using the simple technique of selective cleaning of the Tiber embankment walls, revealed to the world a procession of figures which populate the riverfront with a life that it hasn’t seen in centuries.

Abstract:
Purpose This paper aims to identify emerging fronts and hot topics in educational research. The identification of such educational trends can help decision-makers in educational policies and research agendas. Design/methodology/approach Through a quantitative and scientometric research approach, the authors analyze a sample of 198 highly cited scientific papers extracted from Web of Science corresponding to the 2012-2016 period using a co-verbal analysis to process the papers’ keywords and titles. The result of the co-occurrence analysis is further processed to generate clusters and visualize network maps that allow identifying the different emerging fronts and hot topics. Findings The results indicate that there exist pervasive and generalist topics, thus denoting the perennial nature of some themes within the education research discipline; which coexist with other more specific themes that center the focus of attention in more specific and actual topics that also attract the interest of researchers as technology, assessment, strategies or environment. These emergent fronts could conform a plausible research agenda educational research agenda. Originality/value The authors contribute a method to infer emerging fronts and hot topics of research and have used it to identify the novel avenues of educational research that may guide the agendas in the near future. In the scientific literature, they find studies and reports on fronts and topics mainly within the broader framework of social sciences. Here, the main focus of attention is placed on education as a scientific discipline on its own.

Abstract:
The annual executive director's report documents APSA's activities and directions for the year. The traditional core activities for a learned society are its journals and conferences. APSA, like its counterparts, also supports the discipline and the professional interests of members in a variety of ways: support for department chairs and academic programs, engagement with federal policymaking on support for scholarship and education, and attention to the pipeline of prospective new scholars in the discipline. Some of these initiatives focus on resources for individual political scientists, such as our mentoring initiative, and many are built around management of the commons of the discipline and efforts to assure that we collectively address matters that affect the discipline. APSA is active on many of these fronts, and this report in particular highlights those APSA activities that help support the disciplinary community as a whole.

SINCLAIR, JONATHAN, CHRIS EDMUNDSON, STEPHEN ATKINS, PAUL JOHN TAYLOR, and HAYLEY VINCENT. "The effect of front and back squat techniques on peak loads experienced by the Achilles tendon." Baltic Journal of Health and Physical Activity 7, no. 3 (September 30, 2015): 7–12. http://dx.doi.org/10.29359/bjhpa.07.3.01.

Abstract:
Background: A primary technique in the discipline of strength and conditioning the squat has two principal ‘back and front’ variants. Despite the physiological and strength benefits of the squat, the propensity for musculoskeletal injury is high. The current investigation examined the influence of the front and back squat variations on the load experienced by the Achilles tendon. Material/Methods: Achilles tendon loads were obtained from eighteen experienced male participants as they completed both back and front squats. Differences between squat conditions were examined using Bonferroni adjusted (p = 0.0125) paired t-tests. Results: The results showed that the peak Achilles tendon load was significantly greater in the back squat (2.67 ±0.74 B.W) condition compared to the front squat (2.37 ±0.69 B.W). Conclusions: Given the proposed relationship between the magnitude of the load experienced by the Achilles tendon and tendon pathology, the back squat appears to place lifters at greater risk from Achilles tendon injury. Therefore, it may be prudent for lifters who are predisposed to Achilles tendon pathology to utilize the front squat in their training.

Abstract:
AbstractThis article combines ethnographic and linguistic analysis to illuminate a critical aspect of the US criminal justice system—disciplinary hearings in prison. Focusing on one woman's (Cherry's) hearing, I consider the remaking of power through bureaucratic procedure. The scripted interaction requires the sergeant to read Cherry's ticket out loud in his performance of authority. I explore the intertextual relations motivated by this verbal animation for their ability to construct a unified front of the institution against which Cherry is tried. Cherry, however, manipulates these intertextual relationships, deploying verbal skills gained through her long entanglement with the criminal justice system to mitigate her punishment. The linguistic analysis of Cherry's hearing, positioned in her prison history, reveals the continual remaking of power in prison interactions that are framed by institutional regulations influencing the negotiation of officer authority and possibilities of inmate resistance. Abstract:
The master’s thesis solves models of queueing systems, which use the property of Markov chains. The queueing system is a system, where the objects enter into this system in random moments and require the service. This thesis solves specifically such models of queueing systems, in which the intervals between the objects incomings and service time have exponential distribution. In the theoretical part of the master’s thesis I deal with the topics stochastic process, queueing theory, classification of models and description of the models having Markovian property. In the practical part I describe realization and function of the program, which solves simulation of chosen model M/M/m. At the end I compare results which were calculated in analytic way and by simulation of the model M/M/m.

Abstract:
In this disertation, the impact of Multi-frontal methodology on increasing the efficiency of the teaching process is analyzed in technically and technologically oriented faculties. The conducted experiments showed that this methodology positively influenced key parameters through which it is possible to define the efficiency of such a complicated process as teaching is. Special emphasis is placed on the inner motivation factor. It was noticed through experimentally conducted analysis that this methodology positively influenced this factor. The dissertation gives recommendations for the application of these methods in higher education. Potential difficulties in its implementation were observed, and recommendations were given for its improvement and adaptation to specific conditions of higher education in technical and technological universities.

Abstract:
The Australian Imperial Force in the First World War had a deserved reputation as an effective fighting force, and at the same had the worst disciplinary record away from the frontline when compared with other Dominion forces and the rest of the British Army. Australian indiscipline is a subject that has been largely ignored, or when dealt with as in the Official History by C. E. W. Bean, has had to pass through the filter of the Australian Legend. This study examines the link between Australian indiscipline and the privileged position they held of being the only force immune from the death penalty, except for mutiny, desertion to the enemy and traitorous activity. This simple fact would have a major influence on the relatively high numbers of absentees and desertions within Australian ranks. General Headquarters in France (GHQ) saw these high levels of indiscipline as a direct result of Australian authorities not allowing their soldiers to be placed under the Army Act in full. Further differences surfaced between the British and Australians when it came to punishment, with Australian courts criticised by British Army authorities for not using the powers they possessed to impose penalties that would act as a deterrent, as well as their reluctance to impose Field Punishment No. 1. This study examines these general differences as well as dealing with a specific case of an Australian soldier charged with the murder of a French civilian, a case that attracted the attention of senior political and military figures when it transpired Australians were immune from the death penalty for murder. Maintaining discipline was a constant struggle for the authorities when faced with those determined to avoid frontline duty either by committing military crime or through self-maiming. In this context the high venereal disease rate is discussed and evidence presented that this could be considered as a self-inflicted wound. The mutiny in the 1st Battalion of September 1918 is examined as well as a mutiny in a military prison in France in 1919. It is not the purpose of this study to tarnish the reputation of the many thousands of brave men who fought in the AIF, rather it is an attempt to understand the high levels of indiscipline within the context of the war on the Western Front and the disciplinary code under which they operated.

Abstract:
Collaboration is considered a panacea in North American archaeology today—a cure-all that is claimed to have radically transformed the discipline by bringing about equality and decolonization. Such assertions are problematic on many fronts, especially because collaborative archaeology has undergone little critical assessment. Based on our analysis of how the practice is defined, how social power is construed and measured, and how the goal of decolonization is conceptualized, we show collaboration to be a colonial whitewash that appropriates the methods and values of Indigenous archaeology. Rather than transformation and liberation, collaborative archaeology is ultimately rooted in cooptation and dependence. We contend that rather than decolonizing, collaborative archaeology is a steadfastly colonial enterprise.

Abstract:
The book tells the story, largely unknown to Western readers, of the Soviet home front during World War II. After Hitler’s invasion in 1941, German troops conquered the heartland of Soviet industry and agriculture and turned the occupied territories into mass killing fields. In one of the greatest wartime feats in history, Soviet workers rapidly evacuated factories, food, and people thousands of miles to the east and built a new industrial base beyond the reach of German bombers. As millions of refugees and evacuees streamed east, mass epidemics engulfed the country. Health officials battled to establish new public health regulations. The Soviet state reached the height of its power, imposing military discipline and mobilizing millions of people to work thousands of miles from home. The state assumed responsibility for feeding the nation through a strict ration system. Given terrible food shortages, many people, including workers, began to starve. This book examines the dark and painful war years from a new perspective, telling the stories of evacuees, refugees, teenaged and women workers, runaways from work, Gulag prisoners, and deportees. The narrative follows the Red Army as it retreated east and then battled back westward after Stalingrad, presenting “total war” behind the front lines in a chronicle of spirited defense efforts, draconian state directives, teeming black markets, and selfless heroism. Based on a vast trove of new archival materials, the book tells the story of suffering, sacrifice, and commitment that made the Allied victory possible.

Abstract:
In order to determine target market and price, and design products/components for a family of front-loading washing machines, the coordination for decision-making from the corporate level down to the product and ultimately component levels is required. However, existing design research for many products focuses on analyzing single or multiple disciplines, even though optimizing local performance does not guarantee minimizing total cost at the product line level or maximizing value at the company level. In this work, we apply a multi-level value-driven design (VDD) approach to optimize a family of front-loading washing machines using a discipline-based decomposition. The VDD solutions obtained using discipline-based decomposition (DD) are compared with those obtained using product-based decomposition (PD). Consequently, the multi-level VDD approach based on DD for the washer family provides better performance for attributes than PD, but we observed that DD for the washer family does not guarantee maximizing the value function compared to PD because of the larger numbers of subsystems and consistency-related variables. Ongoing and future work to address this problem are discussed.

Abstract:
Front-end design processes including problem definition and idea generation set a course for the ultimate success of a design. Many design process models emphasize the importance of divergence — considering alternative options — in promoting creativity. Depending on the circumstances of the design environment, design strategies to support divergence may be different as design processes are impacted by various contextual factors, such as available resources and expertise. To investigate how engineers explore alternatives during front-end design, we interviewed 10 academic engineers working in the discipline of microfluidics. Typically, a design process is described as identifying a problem and then generating potential solutions. In our sample, we found these engineers began their design processes with an existing solution and then searched for problems that fit. This qualitative study provided rich descriptions of design processes that show little to no evidence of divergence in generating possible solutions, and instead provide evidence of significant divergence in exploring possible problems. These data suggest traditional models of the design process are inadequate to capture the inverted solution-to-problem design process evident in designs of microfluidic devices created by academics. Understanding how design processes are altered in practice based on contextual factors such as setting and discipline can lead to strategies to better support innovation.

Abstract:
The Integration Framework for Architecture Development (IFAD) is an integrated framework that provides fast and consistent discipline analysis results and identifies discipline consequences corresponding to vehicle design changes. This information is valuable for balancing and integration in the early design phase. In this paper, the IFAD framework is utilized to conduct an example multi-objective multi-disciplinary optimization to evaluate vehicle performance trade-offs for a hypothetical vehicle. We consider design changes on high-level geometrical dimensions including front overhang, rear overhang and vehicle width at rocker. We also study vehicle configurations including choice of materials and tires and choice of powertrains. A commonly used multi-objective genetic algorithm (MOGA) technique, Non-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm (NSGAII [1]) is chosen because of the mixed types of design variables involved (i.e., continuous design variables representing high-level geometrical dimensions and discrete design variables representing vehicle configurations such as powertrain selection and material choice). Vehicle performance analyses in a range of disciplines such as geometry, aerodynamics and energy are carried out automatically through IFAD. The use of response surface modeling (RSM) is desired due to the large number of evaluations typical for a MOGA application. A comparison of the engineering performance trade-offs based on two different sets of performance objectives is presented.

Abstract:
Abstract The focus of this paper is on large-scale MDO of a vehicle system for Safety, NVH (noise, vibration and harshness) and Weight, in a scalable HPC environment. The computational complexity comes from addressing multiple safety modes including, frontal crash, offset crash, side impact and roof crush, in addition to the NVH discipline. A combination of high performance computing utilizing several hundred processors, Kriging metamodeling based design response approximation techniques, formal MDO strategies, and engineering judgement are effectively used to obtain superior design solutions with significantly reduced elapsed computing times. The reduction in large-scale MDO solution times through HPC is significant in that it now makes it possible for such technologies to impact the vehicle design cycle and improve the engineering productivity.

Abstract:
A new multi-physics finite element model (FEM) on the vibration of the radial artery on the wrist is built by this study to predict vibration of wrist artery vessel vibration and then diastolic and systolic blood pressures. The FEM includes the sensor of gel capsule and strain-sensing electrodes, skin, bones and muscles. The vibrations of skin surface and the sensor module are successfully simulated by the established FEM. The resulted vibratory deformation of the sensor electrodes are further transformed to resistance variations to mimic realistic electronics of the front-end readout circuit via establishing a cross-discipline sub-FEM model. The established FEM can is particularly customized to varied ages, weights, heights, genders, and special cardiovascular diseases of users. The customization can be performed in a fashion of one-time calibration by medical staff and/or medical staff. With the customized FEM in high accuracy level, the diastolic and systolic pressures can be accurately predicted by the simulated output resistance variation. Based on simulation FEMs, the design of the pulse sensor is successfully optimized via the processes of Taguchi and numerical methods. The measurements are also conducted to a dozen of subjects. It shows that the designed novel blood pressure sensor is capable of sensing the blood pressure to require accuracy level of the error less than 10% as compared to commercial counterparts with a cumbersome cuff.

Abstract:
The will of Modernity to define and decide the urban form has been truncated by an endless succession of conditions related to land ownership and the many ways of justifying compliance with all kinds of rules that elude the question about form. The consequence is that they provoke a distortion of reality by blurring the entity of the city and its position in front of history. In this sense, the drift and banalization of urbanism has been directed by the bureaucratic criteria of an administration that, with or without technical knowledge, makes decisions that impact on the urban form but without acquiring commitment or responsibility towards it. The urban form is at the mercy of the local building legislation, of the road or the shape of the plots susceptible or not to be built. Irremediably, the resulting urban form, achieved both in an active and passive way, evidences the error of the procedure because it reveals an operational ignorance of the context, of history, or simply of the faith in progress. From the shelter of thought that represents the discipline of urbanism we introduce a series of urban solutions for the city of Alcoy that correspond to a possible urban proposal bounded in the time of the XXI century. This study aims to have a view of the urban form and urbanist order for the city of Alcoy and its territory under the premises of understanding both the inherited city and the needs of the new generations committed to a possible future

Abstract:
Aim/Purpose: This study examined learning during the COVID-19 crisis, as perceived by preservice teachers at the time of their academic studies and their student teaching experience. Background: The COVID-19 crisis is unexpected. On one hand, it disrupted learning in all learning frameworks, on the other, it may create a change in learning characteristics even after the end of the crisis. This study examined the productive, challenging, and thwarting factors that preservice teachers encountered during their studies and in the course of their student teaching practice during the COVID-19 period, from the perspective of preservice teachers. Methodology: The study involved 287 students studying at teacher training institutions in Israel. The preservice teachers were studying online and, in addition, engaged in online teaching of students in schools, guided by their own teacher. The study used a mixed method. The questionnaire included closed and open questions. The data were collected in 2020-2021. Contribution: Identifying the affecting factors may deepen the understanding of online learning/teaching and assist in the optimal implementation of online learning. Findings: Online learning experience. We found that some of the lessons at institutions of higher learning were delivered in the format of online lectures. Many preservice teachers had difficulty sitting in front of a computer for many hours—“Zoom fatigue.” Some preservice teachers wrote that collaborating in forums with others made it easier for them. Some suggested diversifying by digital means, incorporating asynchronous units and illustrative films, and easing up on online lectures as a substitute for face-to-face lectures. Online teaching experience in schools. The preservice teachers’ descriptions show that in lessons taught in the format of lectures and communication of content there were discipline problems and non-learning. According to the preservice teachers, discipline problems stemmed from difficulties concentrating, physical distance, load, and failure to address the students’ difficulties. Recommendations for Practitioners: The findings suggest that it is recommended to combine synchronous lectures and meetings with asynchronous learning that integrates 21st century skills. It is advisable to use collaborative tools, such as forums, shared files, and open content repositories, and to encourage meaningful dialogue between learners, and between learners and their teachers, to better deal with the physical distance. Recommendations for Researchers: A change in the learning medium also requires a change in the definition of objectives and goals expected of each party—students, teachers, and parents. All parties must learn to view online learning as a method that enables empowerment and the application of 21st century skills. Impact on Society: Teachers’ ability to deploy 21st century skills in an online environment depends largely on their experience, knowledge, skills, and attitude toward these skills. Future Research: This study examined the issue from the perspective of preservice teachers. The issue should also be studied from the perspective of lecturers in academia, teachers in schools, and school students. Future studies should examine whether the change that took place during the COVID-19 period in relation to the deployment of 21st century skills, as experienced by all parties, led to the continued use of these skills in the post-corona period. Continued use depends largely on past experiences, knowledge, skills, and attitudes toward these skills. *** NOTE: This Proceedings paper was revised and published in the journal Issues in Informing Science and Information Technology, 18, 141-159.] Click DOWNLOAD PDF to download the published paper. ***
