Many factors can impact the advancement of scientific disciplines. In the study of animal behavior and cognition (i.e., Ethology), a lack of consensus about definitions or the emergence of some current events and inventions, among other aspects, may challenge the discipline’s grounds within the next decades. A collective metadisciplinary discussion may help in envisioning the future to come. For that purpose, I elaborated an online questionnaire about the level of consensus and the researchers’ ways of doing in seven areas: Discipline name and concepts, species, Umwelt, technology, data, netwo

Abstract:
AbstractThe aim of the current study is to explore creative labour production and reproduction processes in architectural design studios in Brazil, UK, Belgium and Italy. In contrast to free autonomy narratives, participant observation has evidenced three conflicting mechanisms in creative labour processes, namely: subjectification, distinction and hierarchical expropriation. This issue is pivotal in a transition period-of-time when architecture confronts the myths of geniuses and focuses on knowledge exchange paradigms. Architecture was not herein approached as substance nor as form (an immutable essence and ideal), rather, it was explored as processes engaged with discipline and dialectics. Discipline was investigated based on the Grounded Theory used to code conflicts and recurrences by focusing on how it reinforces subjectivities and practices. In addition, Action Research was used to explore architecture’s social dialectics by focusing on collaborative methodologies and on how architecture (re)produces ways of seeing by revealing (visualizing hidden properties), imagining (conceiving future scenarios) and refunding (articulating virtual seeds for shared social realities). Results have indicated proposals to result from collaborative work, subjectivities to be enclosed in hegemonic narratives, fantasies to hide the actual collective process of production, and allegedly individual creations to be forms of fetish. This finding suggests a paradigm transition still in course, with overlapping conflicts between invention and labour, competition and collaboration, distinction and collective dialogue, as well as seductive narratives and negotiated practices.

AbstractBusiness processes are at the core of a well-functioning organization. They reflect how information should flow and what actions should be taken to achieve business goals. The discipline of Business Process Management (BPM) focuses on managing and improving business processes within an organization and is often partially adopted during an audit. This chapter discusses how various process analyses can support both internal and external auditors. To ensure that process analysis leads to correct insights, process mining can be applied. Process mining is a collective name for all data-driven process analysis techniques. The insights generated from a process mining analysis provide a good basis for improving business processes in terms of efficiency and risk. This broad view of processes ensures that the generated insights are relevant to both the internal and external auditor.

Abstract:
The contributions in this book focus on critically analysing the relationship between mathematics as a discipline and mathematics as a school subject. The discontents of school mathematics are universally acknowledged and include questions such as: Why do so many people, however intelligent and successful, have feelings of inadequacy and alienation towards the subject? Why does mathematics education in school not seem to improve despite all the effort put into it? Our collective attempt to address such questions through radical rethinking begins by arguing that it is more productive to speak in terms of doing mathematics, in a variety of senses, rather than using words that imply that mathematics exists as some kind of entity. In particular, we reject the notion of mathematics being independent of human agency. Such a reformulation is in line with recent developments in mathematics and the philosophy of mathematics that problematise the quest for a definitive and timeless definition of mathematics. Related developments in history of mathematics, anthropology, and related fields make it imperative to acknowledge historical, cultural, social, ethical, and political – in short, human – dimensions of mathematics and mathematics education. Multiple important themes that are generated by this perspective are summarised.

Abstract:
AbstractThis chapter takes not only into a historic perspective that looks at human consciousness development over many millennia, but emphasizes the importance of mythology as the most deeply ingrained way of humankind to keep learning for transformations. The author argues, contrary to the modern mind’s needs, that the creative aspect of change or transformation is not order, but disorder or chaos. To avoid the final fragmentation or destruction of our world, the intuitive ‘universal power of self-renewal’ (the life instinct) needs to be reintegrated into rational science, to fill our scientific particularization (the death instinct) with meaning, which is adequate to living in a humane way on our planet. This makes the story of the soul (Greek: psyche), which is passed on by peoples and cultures in a nonlinear-out-of-time-way, not only an important resource to understand the entire civilizational process and subsequently the development of regenerative civilizations. By allowing the forthcoming of an innate integral structure in the human mind, which uses both rationality and intuition, creative mythology is a discipline important for transformation literacy. It can contribute to the so much needed acceleration and speed up the process of collective regeneration, because this is a creative act and unleashes what was previously impossible.

Abstract This chapter covers how diverse models, methodologies, purposes, and perspectives can contribute to a more collectively intelligent political science. Collective intelligence exists when the discipline includes ensembles of research that outperform individual research efforts and when the discipline exhibits emergent functionalities. These functionalities include breadth and depth of understanding, out of sample predictability, and conceptual robustness. Diverse models, methods, purposes, and perspectives are necessary for collective intelligence, but diversity alone is not sufficient. Each of many diverse research efforts can be of high quality without the pieces being superadditive. For collective intelligence to arise, the diversity must either be assembled or arise from selective pressures that promote coherence as well as individual success. How does one measure the efficacy of political science? Each research effort must be of high quality but evaluating research in isolation ignores how those pieces fit together.

Abstract:
This chapter looks closely at the rise of state-funded English education to uncover the disciplinary role that poetry played. It shows how the naturalization of English “meter” was a crucial part of the English literary curriculum. “Meter” is placed in quotation marks because the “meter” that emerges in the state-funded classroom has little to do with the prosody wars going on outside its walls. Educational theorist Matthew Arnold's cultural metrics, in which poetry by Shakespeare, for instance, will subtly and intimately transform a student into a good citizen, is replaced by a patriotic pedagogy wherein verses written in rousing rhythms are taught as a naturally felt English “beat.” It suggests that poet and educational theorist Henry Newbolt's figure of the “drum” performed a naturalized rhythm that brought England together as a collective. The collective mass identification with (and proliferation of) patriotic verses created an even sharper divide between the high and low, elite and mass, private and public cultures of poetry in the early twentieth century.

Architectural history used to be part of art history, but has been gradually distanced from the latter as architecture develops as an independent modern discipline. Despite debates on architectural historiography in recent decades, architecture as a unique type of historically situated aesthetic objects and design products has not been adequately addressed. To further an independence from art history, and to re-center architecture itself in historical analysis, this article highlights three essential natures of architecture which differentiate it from other types of aesthetic objects (such as

More and more systems-related terms are emerging in the scientific literature, in curricula, and in popular media: systems thinking, systems approaches, systems analysis, systems dynamics, systems mapping, just to name a few. In an increasingly complex and interconnected world, thinking systemically can help us to understand, communicate, address, and educate about challenges we face. Systems thinking is both an approach to seeing the world in a way that makes connections and relationships more visible and improves our decision-making abilities, and a set of methods and tools.
