Hancocks, Matthew A. "Disclosing new worlds? : strategic management, styles and meaning." Thesis, University of Essex, 2017. http://repository.essex.ac.uk/19468/.

Full text
Abstract:
The philosopher Martin Heidegger argued that the truthful life was at risk of being lost in Western technological culture in the name of increasing control, efficiency, and agility. As the risk is actualised, so the human essence as truth maker is obscured and life itself feels poorer. This thesis draws on Heideggerian philosophy to demonstrate the loss in two dominant styles of contemporary strategic management: the world-picturing and, more recent, agile style. It builds a theory of post-agile strategic practice, which I call adaptive, to address this loss. Consistent with Heideggerian philosophy, I utilise a transformative disclosure methodology and a literary, paradigmatic case reading method to address the questions: Why is agile strategic management so unsatisfying? How do Heideggerian scholars shed light on this dissatisfaction? How do Heideggerians understand the emerging style and what strategic management practices can I propose for the future? After introducing agile strategic management and the impoverishment of life that it fosters, I set out how Heidegger’s philosophy of truth, thinking, and the sacred both sheds light on the problem and suggests a remedy for it. I closely read paradigmatic texts of the world-picturing and agile strategic management styles to demonstrate how business strategy theorisation lines up with extraordinary closeness to Heidegger’s philosophical assessment. I then analyse three Heideggerian prototypes for an adaptive style of strategy practice, concentrating on one paradigmatic text to identify their principal weakness: the omission of the sacred. I illustrate and contrast paradigmatic cases of both the agile and adaptive styles drawn from the beer industry and draw on the adaptive case to construct a theory of adaptive strategy practice, which addresses the problem of the loss of truth, suggesting pedagogical and strategic management practices. I conclude by summarising its findings and contributions, noting some limitations and connections to other studies and suggesting further lines of research.

Berkman-Smith, Emma Louise. "Experiences of disclosing sexual orientation in healthcare consultations." Thesis, University of Leeds, 2011. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/1982/.

Full text
Abstract:
This study focused on experiences of healthcare consultations for lesbian, gay and bisexual (LGB) people, particularly their disclosure of sexual orientation. LGB people are more at risk of certain healthcare conditions than heterosexual people; disclosing sexual orientation allows healthcare professionals to consider the most appropriate approach to treat the concerns of LGB people. Previous literature suggests that lesbians use techniques to assess the safety of a healthcare environment before choosing to disclose their sexual orientation (Hitchcock & Wilson,1992). No previous study to the author’s knowledge has explored British LGB people’s experiences of healthcare consultations. Six students between the ages of 18 and 25 from the University of Leeds were interviewed using semi-structured interviews. These were analysed using interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA). Individual analyses are presented followed by a group analysis detailing master themes occurring across participants. These are: somewhere safe to be free, discomfort defining sexual orientation, searching for acceptance and anticipation and fear of punishment. A process of participants’ approach to healthcare consultations and disclosure of sexual orientation is presented. A combination of participants’ search for acceptance of self and anticipation and fear of punishment seemed to shape their expectations of professionals and how they approached consultations. The interactions between professionals and participants then appeared to influence the participants’ perception of the consultations and their approach future consultations. Clinical implications of this study include: increased training for healthcare professionals around lesbian, gay and bisexual issues, so that they are better able to pick up cues from LGB patients, making it easier for them to disclose sexual orientation if they so choose. By providing the conditions for LGB people to disclose, healthcare professionals are helping to ensure that their LGB patients receive the most appropriate healthcare.

Abstract:
The aim of this research was to examine the experiences of adolescents disclosing their sexual orientation, with specific focus on making the actual disclosure from the young person’s perspective. There is a paucity of existing literature in this field and it is hoped that this thesis will add to the body of knowledge related to lesbian, gay and bisexual adolescents. Chapter one examines the current knowledge around the impact on, and experience of, young people who disclose lesbian, gay or bisexual sexual orientation in any setting. Findings are discussed under three main categories; Reactions to disclosure, Consequences of disclosure and cultural and ethnic differences. It is recognised that there is overlap between these areas with factors that will inevitably interact. The second chapter investigates the experiences of adolescents who have disclosed their sexual orientation to a healthcare professional. Analysis of interviews with seven participants indicated four main themes: Identity formation, the moment of disclosure, additional influences of disclosure and professional roles and responsibilities. These themes are discussed in the context of existing theories and current research. Clinical implications, study limitations and future research avenues are also discussed. Chapter three contains the author’s reflections on the process of completing the thesis, along with personal reflections of the thesis topic and reasons for beginning this investigation.

Abstract:
Head and neck cancer (HNC) is a significant cause of cancer morbidity and mortality worldwide and it is believed that 50% of HNC patients experience significant weight loss at an advanced stage of the disease, a condition known as cachexia. The pathophysiology of cancer cachexia is complex and involves several mediators produced by the tumour or the host that induce body weight loss and, consequently, impairs quality of life. In this thesis project we aimed to better comprehend the molecular mechanisms underlying cachexia in HNC by evaluating clinical and biochemical parameters from 17 patients with squamous cell carcinoma at oropharynge and hypopharing, with and without cachexia (assessed by body weight loss higher than 5% in 6 months). Our results showed no association between body mass index and tumour staging with the establishment of cachexia in head and neck cancer, despite the higher scores of MUST and PG-SGA observed in patients with body weight loss higher than 5% in 6 months. No apparent metabolic changes associated with adipose tissue remodelling were detected among patients‘ groups. The levels of TWEAK and CRP were not significantly different among the 2 groups of patients, not supporting the contribution of inflammation to the development of cachexia. The serum levels of the adipokines leptin and adiponectin, and of the gastric hormone ghrelin do not evidence the contribution of WAT remodelling to the head and neck cancer-related body weight loss. However, the significantly higher serum levels of myostatin in the group of patients with body weight loss higher than 5% in 6 months highlights the contribution of muscle wasting to the cachexia phenotype in head and neck cancer. Taken together, our results evidence the contribution of muscle wasting but not of WAT remodelling to the development of cachexia in the set of head and neck cancer. Future studies involving a higher number of patients and more groups of patients will be important to better follow WAT remodelling and its interplay with muscle wasting in the pathogenesis of head and neck cancer.

Manwaring, Priya, and Tanner Regan. Public Disclosure and Tax Compliance: Evidence from Uganda. Institute of Development Studies, 2024. http://dx.doi.org/10.19088/ictd.2024.063.

Full text
Abstract:
In many countries, tax administrations have only a low capacity to enforce tax collection. In such circumstances, public disclosure policies – where the compliance and/or non-compliance of taxpayers is made public – are an appealing tool to raise compliance. However, the effect of such policies in low-compliance settings is not well understood. Through a field experiment conducted in 2021 with over 65,000 property taxpayers in Kampala, Uganda, we study the effects of reporting delinquents and recognising compliers. While the threat of publicly disclosing delinquency raises compliance, subsequently disseminating delinquent behaviour lowers the compliance of others. Public recognition has even more consistent perverse effects: it lowers compliance both for those promised recognition and for other taxpayers who receive this information. These results are consistent with a model of tax evasion where taxpayers wish to avoid being known as tax-eligible (property owners in this case) and where there is limited shame in delinquency. Public dissemination of information on tax behaviour reduces overall compliance by indicating to taxpayers that actual compliance rates are lower than they had previously believed. Overall, public disclosure policies in this context are ineffective at raising revenue, and sending enforcement reminders is more effective.

Claricoats, Liam. Barriers into Higher Education for disabled students. Sheffield Hallam University, 2024. http://dx.doi.org/10.7190/steer/barriers_disabled_students.

Full text
Abstract:
According to Sheffield Hallam University’s Access and Participation Plan (20/21-24/25), there has been an increased number of disabled students entering Higher Education (HE), with 14.6% of students declaring a disability in the sector. Therefore, this review of the literature explored potential barriers into Higher Education for students with disabilities. Within Higher Education institutions, disabled students may be categorised into having ‘mental health’, ‘cognitive and learning’, ‘sensory, medical and physical’ or ‘multiple impairment’ related disabilities. This review was commissioned in collaboration with the Higher Education Progression Partnership (South Yorkshire), with the aim of identifying barriers into Higher Education institutions for disabled students. Evidence provided from this literature review is intended to assist in developing a rationale for an intervention design and delivery that alleviates the barriers into Higher Education for disabled students. From examining the literature, a prominent barrier that emerged was a lack of accessibility at university. For instance, an inconsistent willingness from tutors to make reasonable adjustments to assessments, a lack of understanding of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) characteristics and spread-out university campus buildings that were inaccessible for students with Cerebral Palsy/walking disabilities. The research findings also revealed that there was a lack of accessible spaces on campus for disabled students, especially for students with ASD to interact. Furthermore, disabled students’ perceptions of stigmatisation and discrimination of disclosing their disability was another key barrier into Higher Education. For instance, during the application process to university, students believed that it would jeopardise their opportunity to be accepted into their chosen Higher Education institution if they were to disclose their disability.

OII¿s externally-focused efforts have increased. In the past year, the Office responded to an ever-growing number of inquiries and completed 150 investigations. This was the second year in which the Bank Group made this list public. Disclosing sanctions is one of the mechanisms that reinforces the Bank Group¿s message that it will deal severely with those responsible for the misuse of funds and failure to comply with its anti-corruption policies. Additionally, OII improved the efficiency and effectiveness of its use of human, technological and knowledge-based resources in its investigative processes. In 2008, there was also significant progress in the area of prevention. OII continued to support the Institutional Capacity of State Division. Particular attention was directed to identifying and implementing initiatives under the Anti-corruption Activities Trust Fund (AAF).
