This chapter describes cardiovascular disorders related to occupational and environmental exposures. Sections of the chapter address cardiovascular disease due to carbon monoxide, nitrates, particulate air pollution, and psychosocial factors. The chapter also addresses shift work and sedentary work. A section describes arrhythmias due to various specific chemical exposures. Another section describes hypertension related to lead, excessive noise, and other factors. Finally, a section addresses peripheral vascular disease and Raynaud disease. Cardiovascular disorders are very common and recognition of how occupational and environmental exposures contribute to the occurrence and exacerbation of cardiovascular disorders is important in their prevention, diagnosis, and management.

In thermal equilibrium, both electron and nuclear spin systems are unpolarized on average, but characterized by nonzero fluctuations. These fluctuations are inevitable due to the quantum-mechanical nature of spin. The physics of spin fluctuations in electron and nucelar systems is studied in this chapter. The intensity and dynamics of these inevitable stochastic fluctuations of spins contain information on spin relaxation and decoherence times, spin precession period, and interactions in spin systems. The theory of spin fluctuations in semiconductor nanosystems as well as experimental advances in the field of spin noise spectroscopy are reviewed. Specific situations where the spin noise spectroscopy can be particularly useful for spin dynamics studies are discussed, the analysis of recent progress in the field of nonequlibrium spin fluctuations is also presented.

Chapter 12 showed how to circumvent two major stumbling blocks of the LGCA approach: statistical noise and exponential complexity of the collision rule. Yet, the ensuing LB still remains connected to low Reynolds flows, due to the low collisionality of the underlying LGCA rules. The high-viscosity barrier was broken just a few months later, when it was realized how to devise LB models top-down, i.e., based on the macroscopic hydrodynamic target, rather than bottom-up, from underlying microdynamics. Most importantly, besides breaking the low-Reynolds barrier, the top-down approach has proven very influential for many subsequent developments of the LB method to this day.

Abstract:
At the level of mathematical abstraction, computing image motion amounts to an estimation problem and can be analyzed using the tools of statistics and signal processing. As shown in this chapter, intrinsic limitations to the estimation processes make it impossible to derive veridical estimates for all images. Image motion is estimated erroneously, and as a result higher level processes compute erroneous three-dimensional motion and moving scenes. Specifically, two limitations are discussed: (a) due to noise in image data, there is statistical bias that affects anisotropic patterns and (2) the filters computing changes in time are asymmetric (causal), using data only from the past but not the future, and misestimate on locally asymmetric intensity signals of certain spatial frequencies. Since these limitations are not an artifact of the hardware but are inherent to the computations, they will affect any system and thus create illusions in man and machine.

This book presents a comprehensive overview of the foundations of single-molecule studies, based on manipulation of the molecules and observation of these with fluorescent probes. It first discusses the forces present at the single-molecule scale, the methods to manipulate them, and their pros and cons. It goes on to present an introduction to single-molecule fluorescent studies based on a quantum description of absorption and emission of radiation due to Einstein. Various considerations in the study of single molecules are introduced (including signal to noise, non-radiative decay, triplet states, etc.) and some novel super-resolution methods are sketched. The elastic and dynamic properties of polymers, their relation to experiments on DNA and RNA, and the structural transitions observed in those molecules upon stretching, twisting, and unzipping are presented. The use of these single-molecule approaches for the investigation of DNA–protein interactions is highlighted via the study of DNA and RNA polymerases, helicases, and topoisomerases. Beyond the confirmation of expected mechanisms (e.g., the relaxation of DNA torsion by topoisomerases in quantized steps) and the discovery of unexpected ones (e.g., strand-switching by helicases, DNA scrunching by RNA polymerases, and chiral discrimination by bacterial topoII), these approaches have also fostered novel (third generation) sequencing technologies.

Programmable Integrated Photonics (PIP) is a new paradigm that aims at designing common integrated optical hardware configurations, which by suitable programming can implement a variety of functionalities that, in turn, can be exploited as basic operations in many application fields. Programmability enables by means of external control signals both chip reconfiguration for multifunction operation as well as chip stabilization against non-ideal operation due to fluctuations in environmental conditions and fabrication errors. Programming also allows activating parts of the chip, which are not essential for the implementation of a given functionality but can be of help in reducing noise levels through the diversion of undesired reflections. After some years where the Application Specific Photonic Integrated Circuit (ASPIC) paradigm has completely dominated the field of integrated optics, there is an increasing interest in PIP justified by the surge of a number of emerging applications that are and will be calling for true flexibility, reconfigurability as well as low-cost, compact and low-power consuming devices. This book aims to provide a comprehensive introduction to this emergent field covering aspects that range from the basic aspects of technologies and building photonic component blocks to the design alternatives and principles of complex programmable photonics circuits, their limiting factors, techniques for characterization and performance monitoring/control and their salient applications both in the classical as well as in the quantum information fields. The book concentrates and focuses mainly on the distinctive features of programmable photonics as compared to more traditional ASPIC approaches.
