Disconjugacy of thekth component of themth order system ofnth order differenttal equationsY(n)=f(x,Y,Y′,…,Y(n−1)), (1.1), is defined, wheref(x,Y1,…,Yn),∂f∂yij(x,Y1,…,Yn):(a,b)×Rmn→Rmare continuous. Given a solutionY0(x)of (1.1),k-component disconjugacy of the variational equationZ(n)=∑i=1nfYi(x,Y0(x),…,Y0(n−1)(x))Z(i−1), (1.2), is also studied. Conditions are given for continuous dependence and differentiability of solutions of (1.1) with respect to boundary conditions, and then intervals on which (1.1) isk-component disconjugate are characterized in terms of intervals on which (1.2) isk-compo

IntroductionFixational saccades are miniature eye movements that constantly change the gaze during attempted visual fixation. Visually guided saccades and fixational saccades represent an oculomotor continuum and are produced by common neural machinery. Patients with strabismus have disconjugate binocular horizontal saccades. We examined the stability and variability of eye position during fixation in patients with strabismus and correlated the severity of fixational instability with strabismus angle and binocular vision.MethodsEye movements were measured in 13 patients with strabismus and 16

AbstractFor the n-th order nonlinear differential equation, y(n) = f (x, y, y′, … , y(n–1)), we consider uniqueness implies uniqueness and existence results for solutions satisfying certain (k + j)-point boundary conditions for 1 ≤ j ≤ n – 1 and 1 ≤ k ≤ n – j. We define (k; j)-point unique solvability in analogy to k-point disconjugacy and we show that (n – j0; j0)-point unique solvability implies (k; j)-point unique solvability for 1 ≤ j ≤ j0, and 1 ≤ k ≤ n – j. This result is analogous to n-point disconjugacy implies k-point disconjugacy for 2 ≤ k ≤ n – 1.

Abstract Generalizations of the disconjugacy for a differential inclusion of neutral type are given. The relation between these generalizations and the existence of solutions of multipoint boundary value problems is discussed and the tests for disconjugacy are established. These tests are applicable to the linear differential equations of neutral type, too.

Infantile strabismus is a common disorder characterized by a chronic misalignment of the eyes, impairment of binocular vision, and oculomotor abnormalities. Nonhuman primates with strabismus, induced in infancy, show a pattern of abnormalities similar to those of strabismic children. This allows strabismic nonhuman primates to serve as an ideal animal model to examine neural mechanisms associated with aberrant oculomotor behavior. Eye torsion was examined in 13 astronaut subjects, tested during repeated episodes of 0 G and 1.8 G in parabolic flight aboard NASA’s KC-135. Four findings are included. 1) A strong relationship between previous history of SMS and ocular torsional disconjugacy in novel gravitational states. 2) Responses were unchanged in 4 subjects retested a year later. 3) Ocular torsional disconjugacy scores increased as exposure to 0 and 1.8 G increased. This was particularly evident in subjects who had had SMS. 4) Torsional studies during 10 to 20 parabolas are required to accurately predict SMS. The hypot

The regional anatomy around the DBS lead in the subthalamic nucleus (STN) determines efficacy and adverse effects. Understanding the regional anatomy allows the programmer to adjust the stimulation to provide optimal benefit and the absence of adverse effects. The STN lies near the junction of the diencephalon and mesencephalon. It is just ventral to the thalamus, just lateral to the brachium conjunctivum and red nucleus, and medial and dorsal to the internal capsule. These structures are important because inappropriate stimulation causes side effects. For examples: Electrical fields spreading
