Abstract:
What does it mean to be a ‘shaman’ in present-day Tokyo today? In what way(s) is the role of the shamanic practitioner represented at a popular level? Are certain characteristics emphasised and others downplayed? This book offers an answer to these questions through the analysis of a specific discourse on shamans that emerged in the Japanese metropolitan context between the late 20th century and the first decade of the 21st century, a discourse that the more ‘traditional’ approaches to the study on shamanism do not take into account. In order to better contextualise this specific discourse, the volume opens with a brief historical account of the formation of the academic discourse on shamans. Within the theoretical framework offered by critical discourse analysis and by means of multi-sited ethnographic research, it then weaves together different case studies: three novels by Taguchi Randy, a manga, a TV series and the case of an urban shaman who is mostly active in Tokyo. The main elements emerging from these case studies are explored by situating them in the precise historical and social context within which the discourse has been developed. This shows that the new discourse analysed shares several characteristics with the more ‘traditional’ and accepted discourses on shamanism, while at the same time differing in certain respects. In this work, particular attention is given to how the category and term ‘shaman’ is defined, used and re-negotiated in the Japanese metropolitan context. Through this approach, the book aims to further problematize the categories of ‘shaman’ and ‘shamanism’, by highlighting certain aspects that are not yet accepted by many scholars, even though they constitute a discourse that is relevant and effective.

Abstract:
This article examines the trope of deservingness, one of the most enduring narratives used by government officials, the media, and the larger public to classify poor people and to determine whether they are worthy of assistance. It first considers the concept of deservingness and how it fits into popular explanations of poverty and the work of distributing public resources. It then describes the use of the concept of deservingness throughout the history of poor relief in the United States, with particular emphasis on how race, gender, and citizenship have been deployed to shape deservingness narratives in two important areas of social provision: cash assistance and health care. Finally, it reviews recent trends in the deployment of the deservingness/undeservingness discourse, highlighting areas that require more analysis.

Jin, Dal Yong. Critical Discourse of K-pop within Globalization. University of Illinois Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.5406/illinois/9780252039973.003.0006.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter examines the transformation of K-pop in the early twenty-first century in a broader sociocultural context. It maps out whether hybridity has generated new creative cultures, ones that are free from Western dominance, or whether this trend eventually oppresses local music. The aim is therefore to investigate the different cultural stages and transition of popular music in Korea occurring within the unfolding logic of globalization and to interrogate the adequacy of cultural hybridity as a plausible framework to explain cultural phenomena currently under way. In particular, it analyzes the development of English mixed into the lyrics of Korean popular music in order to identify and examine several key factors involved in the rapid growth of K-pop and its influence in the New Korean Wave. From the perspective gained from the combined angles of critical cultural studies and textual analysis, new insights are generated into the emerging discourse of cultural hybridization in Korean popular music.
