How must n non-overlapping equal circles be packed in a given circle so that the diameter of the circles will be as large as possible? This paper presents an account of this problem and its putative solutions and related configurations in lotus receptacles, classical Japanese mathematics (wasan) and traditional Japanese design. Particular emphasis is placed on the connection between the conjectural solutions of this discrete geometrical problem and the fruit arrangements in the receptacles of lotuses, because in most cases the actual fruit arrangements are identical to the mathematical solutio

Processing of calibration measurements on EZB-3The calibration of horizontal circles results in a set of discrete correction values. These corrections are obtained in specific circle positions chosen by the size of the calibration step. For further use it is necessary to know the correction values for any location on a horizontal circle; therefore, it is necessary to know the function of the continuous corrections of a horizontal circle. This could be achieved from the measured values by several methods. In the article two methods are presented for determining this function through the approxi

Let μ be a measure with support on the unit circle and n ≥ 1, β > 0. The associated circular β ensemble involves a probability distribution of the form [Formula: see text] where C is a normalization constant, and [Formula: see text] We explicitly evaluate the m-point correlation functions when μ is replaced by a discrete measure on the unit circle, generated by paraorthogonal orthogonal polynomials associated with μ, and use this to investigate universality limits for sequences of such measures. We also consider ratios of products of random characteristic polynomials.

Abstract:
The German Tank Problem dates back to World War II when the Allies used a statistical approach to estimate the number of enemy tanks produced or on the field from observed serial numbers after battles. Assuming that the tanks are labeled consecutively starting from 1, if we observe k tanks from a total of N tanks with the maximum observed tank being m, then the best estimate for N is m(1 + 1/k) - 1. We refer to an estimate as "best" when the estimate is closest to the actual number of tanks. We explore many generalizations; first, we looked at the discrete and continuous one-dimensional case.

Abstract In this paper, inspired by the geometric inversion transformation, a novel transformation of the z-plane root locus to a pseudo s-plane is proposed. In the z-plane, the stability of a discrete closed-loop system (a sampled-data control system) requires that all the system poles lie within the unit circle. In root locus analysis, the unit circle region seems congested, compared to the stability region of a continuous system, which is the left half of the s-plane. In the case of fast sampling, the poles of a discrete system can really be in a small neighborhood, thus making the control

Design rules for flat face flanges with metal-to-metal contact beyond the bolt circle are covered by Appendix Y of the ASME Code. These design rules are based on Schneider’s work [1]. The evaluation of this compression requires a rigorous flexibility analysis of the joint including bolt-flange elastic interaction.
