Abstract:
Abstract:
This article contends that technopopulism is a discursive formation that emerges from the convergence of two preexisting discourses: populism and technolibertarianism. Whereas these discourses are historically distinct the 2008 financial crisis and the 2011 wave of struggles have precipitated the political conditions for their intersection and hybridization. Such convergence produces both tensions and possibilities. On the one hand, technopopulism engenders a radically participatory model of democracy, which is ultimately anti-institutional as citizens cooperate and engage in sophisticated decision-making without the mediation of professional politicians. On the other hand, the more successful technopopulist parties—at least in the electoral arena—are all led by charismatic leaders who synthesize the positions that emerge from the netroots to mobilize them against the establishment. These two seemingly contradictory aspects precipitate in two variants of technopopulism: a leaderless-technocratic variant, which is derived from the open source mode of governance and from early experiments of the Global Justice Movement in networked self-government; and a leaderist-populist variant, which is more strictly focused on the electoral competition as an intrinsically reductive and thus hegemonic practice. The article concludes with a reflection on the discursive complementarity of these two variants and on the political tensions and challenges technopopulism faces in the current phase.

Abstract:
This research is conducted to elaborate discursive formations, formation and surveillance of discursive subject, and the subject’s struggle towards the discourse in Paolo Bacigalupi’s The Water Knife. Data that is successfully collected are analyzed using Foucault’s archeo-genealogy method in two steps: archeology reading and genealogy reading. The result shows that there four formations forming a discourse, namely object, enunciative, conceptual, and strategy formation. Then, there are also four mechanisms of discursive formation, which are centering individual from society, training of control the activity of the body, testing individual’s body in the certain degree, and creating subject as body-machine of discourse. The mechanism of surveillance is done through three ways, they are hierarchial control, norm forming, and examination as intensive control. The effect of the dominant discourse is the rebellion against the discourse. There are two rebellion ways in the novel, namely parrhesia as the discourse discontinuity and the care of the self as means against the discourse.

Caipira music, or the call root Sertaneja music, is heard and/or admired for a few people. This fact occurs due the crystallized image that the society, mainly in the urban zone, has of the countryside man, which it is still seen, in the present, as a caricature. This fact can be seen in the representation of the caipira Nerso da Capitinga in the TV program Zorra Total, of Rede Globo (TV company). Therefore, the objective of this research is to reflect about this representation of the countryside man, rescuing cultural and social elements that had allowed that this image was crystallized from a pejorative and caricatured form. For this, it was used the French branch of Discourse Analysis (DA) underlining the concepts of discursive formations, ideological formations and discursive memory.

A memória discursiva analisada compreende a memória mítica, a memória social inscrita em práticas e a memória narrada do historiador, enquanto história cultural.

Abstract:
The announcement of the giant fields in the Brazilian pre-salt oil has put the target in the spotlight. The immense wealth and property of the inevitable changes in the legislation of the sector are the main issues arising from this fact. Indeed, we have witnessed a proliferation of discourses on the subject. This work is part of a set of reflections that take oil as an object of interest. We favor a specific space of discursive production, namely that introduced by the National Campaign The Oil Must Be Ours. A first methodological approach to data collection identified that, among its mobilization materials, is highlighted by the primer mass movement, which runs from July 2009 through the national territory. Our considerations regarding the speech genres revealed hybridization of the primer, such peculiarity forced us to build devices for different analysis. In a first memento, we decided to observe the marks of a person, the temporal and spatial markers, in order to identify a particular scenery discursive (Maingueneau, 1997) which took us to images of coenunciadores; consider, second, the speeches reported (Bakhtin, 2006; Authier-Revuz, 1998 and others) to understand the polyphony inherent in the booklet. Our analysis shows how a regime of truth and memory are instituted for the scenography discourse, the discourse analysis reported, with emphasis on speeches direct, indirect and narrativised allowed us to identify, in the assemblage of voices, a place of confrontation between formations discursive differences

Marsh, Ian. "A critical analysis of the discursive formation of suicide as pathological and medical." Thesis, University of Brighton, 2008. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.485758.

Full text
Abstract:
The thesis critically examines contemporary approaches to the problem of suicide and suicide prevention. An analytic strategy broadly Foucauldian in orientation (focusing on relations of power, knowledge and the subject) is employed to map the formation, consolidation and expansion of a 'regime of truth' centred on a compulsory ontology of pathology in relation to suicide. The conditions of possibility for such a regime, the site of its formation, the means by which relations of power and of power-knowledge acted to produce its truths and justify its practices, and its effects in terms of the objects, concepts and subjects formed, are identified. It is argued that suicide came to be newly problematised in the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Understood in relation to shifting 'economies of power', suicide comes to represent less a transgression against God or the Sovereign necessitating punishment, and more an affront to a biopolitical rationality that sought to foster life and disavow death. The asylum emerges as the site where new, medico-scientific, truths can be formed, and medical authority asserted, with regards to suicide and the suicidal. Constituted primarily as patients, in the asylum the suicidal are confined, constantly watched and restrained. Here they could also be examined, diagnosed, and treated, the knowledge. produced through such means justifying the practices employed. New truths of suicide come to be formed by reference to insanity, and concurrently emerging theories of mental pathology are defined in part by reference to suicide. Through, in part at least, such a productive configuration of power-knOWledge the nineteenth century sees suicide established as an act of madness, the insane constituted as dangerous, and the necessity of alienism (later psychiatry) confirmed. Suicide as an act, the suicidal patient, as well as the responsible, accountable and culpable clinician, all come to be formed in relation to the production and circulation of medical I psychiatric truths and such processes are mapped in the thesis up to the present day. Suicide is now read, almost always, as a tragedy, one caused primarily by pathological processes internal to the individual that require expert diagnosis and management. The possibilities for thought and action of such a 'regime' are analysed, as are the limitations imposed by its dominance. Other meanings of self-accomplished death - an act of protest or resistance, of self-determination, choice or will, an event of moral, criminal or political concern, even as a subject of philosophical debate - have come to be marginalised. Established as an act of path910gy, suicide prevention for the most part now involves the identification, treatment or containment of an internal destructive 'force', usually linked to various forms of mental illness. The effectiveness of the 'regime of truth' to utilise self-accomplished deaths as evidence for the necessity of maintaining and I or extending psychiatric practices, and for the production of more knowledge in terms of causation and prevention, is noted, as is the vulnerability of individual clinicians within such a system to criticism and blame. In seeking to problematise the effects of such a dominant 'regime of truth' this thesis offers an original analysis that can serve to open up new lines of enquiry in the study of suicide.

Abstract:
In contemporary world of discursive materialization about democracy, meanings have been emerging which have affected the formation of intersdiscourse of subject-teachers and subject managers from public schools of São Paulo State -- highlighted by school in the countryside -- reverberating in the alleged democratic practices of their school management. From such practices and pedagogical knowledge, so-called democratic, and within certain production requirements, we analyzed in this masters thesis, the discursivizations of the significant democracy by the subject (teachers and managers) for that mentioned school. The mobilization of numerous concepts of Pecheuxian Analysis Discourse (PAD) as subject, meaning, ideology, discursive memory, discursive formation, ideological formation, enunciation, interdiscourse, subject-position, among others, guides us through the investigations about the consequences and reverbarations of the significant contemporary democracy related to the school management. The choice for the French Pecheuxian Analysis Discourse (PÊCHEUX, 1990, 1995, 2008, 2015) as theoretical and methodological device for this thesis is justified because of its broad field of studies which contemplates and encompasses important areas of scientific knowledge as: the historical materialism which covers, discusses, and reflects on social formations and transformations and of its constituent movements, as well as the ideology as observation instrument challenged by historical subjection and their re(productions). The corpus consists of interviews with such subjects and with observations of their performances at that school. From this broad discursive space (MAINGUENEAU, 1997) we made cutouts understood as correlative fragments of language and situation (ORLANDI, 1999). From the selected cutouts, discursive sequences of reference are drawn (DSR) (COURTINE, 1982) to the discursive analysis. The discursive analyzes of the cutouts show us that these subjects are inserted in discursive formations which do not allow them to move to a place where only set out the state discourse, often taken by them as irrefutable; they do not find themselves in the condition of individuals able of being opposed to democratic told discourses instituted by the contemporary world as true, far away from questioning them. Thee subjects do not realize that discursivization about a supposed democratic management is marked by imagination, which operates in subjective delusion, leading them to believe they are the origins of the saying. The contradictions, the silences, the multiplicity of meanings on the theme democracy do not cause some strangeness to these subjects, preventing them from producing new meanings.

Abstract:
The introduction of civic education to Serbian primary and secondary schools in 2001 marked a beginning of an all-encompassing education reform that followed the country's 2000 'democratic revolution'. In the context of a socio-political shift from various authoritarian regimes, including the 1945-1990 state socialism and 1990-2000 nationalist authoritarianism, the policy set the tone for future changes that were designed to support democratisation of Serbia, and assist its return to Europe (Birzea, 1994). A part of the broader programme for democratisation of education and education for democracy in Serbia, the policy enabled various discursive elements constitutive of the desired post-2000 ideology to enter the national educational discourse. This thesis explored its formation. I approached the policy as a way to explore the beginning of Serbia's first proper post-communist reform, and analyse the actors and ideologies that had shaped it. I used Ball's notion of policy-as-discourse and conceptualised civic education policy as a part of a discursive project of creating a 'new Serbia'. Using elite interviews and documentary analysis, I explored its formation and development, its place in the wider reform, and its relation to religious education, (re)introduced at the same time. Combining the elements of Fairclough's critical discourse analysis, and elements of Bourdieu's social theory, I looked into the meaning and function of civic education as a part of the ideological construction of the future Serbia, as well as capital used to position Serbia favourably in the global field in the early days of its educational transition. Within the wider transition literature, I attempted to establish a comparison between Serbia's 'belated' post-communist transition, and educational changes happening across formerly communist countries of Central and Eastern Europe in early-to-mid 1990s. I also explored the applicability and usefulness of the recent theoretical developments in the transition literature that go against the conceptualisation of post-communist transitions as modernising projects, and argue instead for a focus on unique transformations that happen as a result of a meeting between globally dominant and desirable discursive elements and local contexts. I conclude that the discursive elements of the Serbian civic education policy were used as capital by Serbian policy actors to ensure their better positioning not only in the global, but also in the national field, as suggested by differences in the ideological construction of the policy discourse in different fields. This prompts a concern with the concept of various 'policyspeaks', as recently explored by Halász (2012) and Steiner-Khamsi (2014). I argue that as a part of a discursive project intended to construct post-2000 Serbia, civic education policy worked more towards eradicating the undesirable ideology of violent nationalist authoritarianism, than towards eradicating the ideology of communist authoritarianism. In this sense, the specificity of the context proved important for the shape and meaning of a post-communist reform and ideologies that it was designed to propagate. However, instead of rejecting modernist concepts of transition and democratisation, I advise a future focus on careful unpacking of their context-dependent ideological-discursive constructions.

Marn, Travis M. "Performing the Black-White Biracial Identity: The Material, Discursive, and Psychological Components of Subject Formation." Scholar Commons, 2018. https://scholarcommons.usf.edu/etd/7695.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this new materialist study was to examine the subject performativity of ‘biracial’ individuals in an interview setting in order to disrupt the humanist assumptions of racial identity in psychological research. I also sought to promote critical resistance to subjectification to examine ‘race’ without reifying participants’ raced subjects. Four research questions guided this study: How does the researcher, researched, and interview intra-activity serve to instantiate the biracial subject? Under what material alterations to the interview process do different subjects come to be? Which subjects come to be or fail to come to be in the interview intra-action? How does purposeful entanglement function during the interview process? In this experimental critical qualitative inquiry study, I interviewed five ‘black-white biracial’ undergraduate students three times each while enacting a series of agential cuts within and between each interview. By altering the flow of material during the interviews, I provoked multiple identity instantiations and analyzed the process of subjectification/individuation. Grounded in Barad’s agential realism, and guided by Simondon, Foucault, and Butler my analysis of this data suggests that humanist models of ‘racial’ identity are insufficient, and findings further suggest that a posthumanist and post-qualitative account of ‘biracial’ identity offers more insight into the performativity of ‘raced’ subjects. This research provides a path for psychological identity research to ethically evolve past the linguistic and ontological turns.

Abstract:
Considers the problem of the Orthodox religious identity from the point of view of the influence of five types of discourse, widely represented in the Orthodox semiotic picture of the world: philosophical, mythological, artistic, political and ideological. Selected types of religious identity: normative, marginalized, and folkloristically, and determined what type of discourse most pragmatically strongly influences the formation of a type of Orthodox identity. The authors come to the conclusion about the existence in the Russian Federation "rural" and "urban" Orthodox discourses. The first leads to the development of social strain in the area of religious identity and is the base of the formation polarisierung religious identity. The second sets the normative Orthodox identity, avoiding archaism and development of the centaur-ideas. This study was conducted in part supported by RFBR, research project No. 18-011-00164 on "Discursive study of religious identity." Designed for a wide range of sociologists, philologists, cultural studies and religious studies, as well as for a wide circle of readers interested in questions of religion.

Abstract:
AbstractThis chapter examines how Taiwan’s written media justified the state’s introduction of funeral reforms in the second half of the twentieth century. Situating this case study within the broader sociopolitical context of contemporary Taiwan, it illustrates how discourse analysis can be used as a tool for studying change. The state-led reforms induced changes in a field in which religious rituals play an important role, as state authorities operated with priorities differing from ritual practice. Instead, they were concerned with measures for land saving and popularized practices such as cremation or natural burials. The discourse analysis reveals that the justifications brought forward for reforms appeared with a high degree of consistency starting from the late 1970s in Taiwanese press articles. Following Michel Foucault’s understanding of discursive formations, four sub-formations can be distinguished, which all have in common that they are aimed at problematizing ritual practices prevalent at funerals. These sub-formations consisted of considerations concerning the quantitative limits of available cemetery land for graves, arguments referring to the economic advantages of cremation, articulations of the ideal of green cemeteries designed in a park-like fashion, and a critique of geomancy in labeling it superstitious. The discursive voices emerging in the sub-formations were state and local authorities, as well as experts and journalists commenting on reform measures. These priorities and justifications for reforms appeared to be incompatible with religious funeral rituals and are analyzed as changes in terms of a secularization process of Taiwan’s funerary practice. An important finding is that the secular reform measures were, to a large extent, inspired by similar reforms in other regions in the world, and are as such part of a global pattern.

Abstract:
The article outlines the contours of a new methodology in the study of co-branding, based on M. DeLanda’s theory of assemblages, developed in line with the cutting edge of modern philosophical thought: object-oriented ontology. It is demonstrated that the relevance of its development is linked to the changes in brand alliance practices occurring under the influence of globalisation and digitalisation processes. Transformations characteristic to merging brands, and related to both their rise in number and diversification were proven to be part of a more global tendency towards the complication of social reality, and cannot be explained within the ‘perceived conformity’ paradigm that dominates co-branding. The author’s approach is conceptualised using comparative and discursive analysis methods, the essence of which lies in deconstructing the established notions of brand alliances as internally consistent alliances with an intelligible logic. Real co-branding cases were provided to demonstrate a tendency towards forming alliances evaluated as ‘irrational’, ‘sudden’, and ‘unpredictable’. To bridge the gap between theory and practice, it has been suggested that co-branding should be seen as an assembly process and that alliances themselves should be seen as systems of an assemblage nature. It is stressed that the representation of brands through the lens of the assemblage theory allows us to demonstrate their heterogeneity, plasticity and openness to change and interactions, which contributes to the formation of brand alliances. The conclusion outlines the prospects of applying the author’s approach to the field of co-branding, highlighting that the proposed optics of the theory of assemblage contribute to achieving the necessary flexibility in forming brand alliances relevant to the complexity and diversity of the modern digital era.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
The subject of the study is the cooperation of S. Efremov with Western Ukrainian periodicals as a page in the history of Ukrainian journalism which covers the relationship of journalists and scientists of Eastern and Western Ukraine at the turn of the XIX-XX centuries. Research methods (biographical, historical, comparative, axiological, statistical, discursive) develop the comprehensive disclosure of the article. As a result of scientific research, the origins of Ukrainocentrism in the personality of S. Efremov were clarified; his person as a public figure, journalist, publisher, literary critic is multifaceted; taking into account the specifics of the memoir genre and with the involvement of the historical context, the turning points in the destiny of the author of memoirs are interpreted, revealing cooperation with Western Ukrainian magazines and newspapers. The publications ‘Zoria’, ‘Narod’, ‘Pravda’, ‘Bukovyna’, ‘Dzvinok’, are secretly got into sub-Russian Ukraine, became for S. Efremov a spiritual basis in understanding the specifics of the national (Ukrainian) mass media, ideas of education in culture of Ukraine at the end of XIX century, its territorial integrity, and state independence. Memoirs of S. Efremov on cooperation with the iconic Galician journals ‘Notes of the Scientific Society after the name Shevchenko’ and ‘Literary-Scientific Bulletin’, testify to an important stage in the formation of the author’s worldview, the expansion of the genre boundaries of his journalism, active development as a literary critic. S. Yefremov collaborated most fruitfully and for a long time with the Literary-Scientific Bulletin, and he was impressed by the democratic position of this publication. The author’s comments reveal a long-running controversy over the publication of a review of the new edition of Kobzar and thematically related discussions around his other literary criticism, in which the talent of the demanding critic was forged. S. Efremov steadfastly defended the main principles of literary criticism: objectivity and freedom of author’s thought. The names of the allies of the Ukrainian idea L. Skochkovskyi, O. Lototskyi, O. Konyskyi, P. Zhytskyi, M. Hrushevskyi in S. Efremov’s memoirs unfold in multifaceted portrait descriptions and function as historical and cultural facts that document the pages of the author’s biography, record his activities in space and time. The results of the study give grounds to characterize S. Efremov as the first professional Ukrainian-speaking journalist.
