Abstract:
Book clubs and book discussions are a useful means to encourage adults to read and discussion issues and other questions raised by the book. Different formats of book clubs exist including the traditional book club, the community-wide read (i.e. One Book, One Community), and the online book clubs (like the service offered through dearreader.com). Each format engages participants in various levels of discussion, but all encourage reading. The advantages and disadvantages of each format help libraries determine what format of a book club or book discussion they wish to offer at the library.

A journal club is educational event where individuals meet regularly to critically evaluate recent articles in the scientific literature, generally any branch of science. Every participant of a journal club can take part in the debate and discussion. Journal clubs help people to learn and improve their critical appraisal skills and the ability to apply new knowledge [Esisi M., 2007; Swift G., 2004; Milbrandt E.B., Vincent J.L., 2004].
Journal clubs have often been cited as a bridge between research and practice [Kleinpell R.M., 2002]. Participants often differ widely in experience, knowl

Abstract With immunology being a rapidly progressing field, it is important to not only teach the basic immunology concepts but also teach current methods and navigation of primary literature. Based off our curriculum, students entering the 400-level immunology course already have had a brief introduction to immunology through the microbiology course. This allows us to dive more deeply into the material using primary literature and regular journal club discussions. This study examines unintended consequences during a 6th-grade book club discussion of Bette Bao Lord’s (1984) In the Year of the Boar and Jackie Robinson. The participants modeled a book club discussion, otherwise known as the fish bowl, for a newly enrolled student. Unintended consequences occurred within the realm of deviating from the rules of discourse, posited in “I Can” statements. Results suggest that audio-taping peer-led discussion groups can enhance analysis of matters that are difficult to fully interpret in the moment.
