Hsiao, Ling. "Moving the Discussion Forward Through Surprises and Dilemmas: Teacher Learning in Academic Discussion." Thesis, Harvard University, 2015. http://nrs.harvard.edu/urn-3:HUL.InstRepos:14121809.

Full text
Abstract:
Academic discussion deepens learning when students share multiple perspectives, challenge propositions, and build on each other’s ideas to develop their own understanding (Michaels, O’Connor, & Resnick, 2008; Cazden, 1988). But academic discussion is rare in practice, suggesting that teachers are not implementing effective ‘talk moves,’ or discussion-based strategies to foster genuine dialogues (Applebee, Langer, Nystrand, & Gamoran, 2003). How do teachers learn to respond to students effectively in academic discussion? This dissertation aims to describe the process by which teachers learn to teach using discussion in their own classrooms after professional development. It follows six teachers implementing a new curriculum, Word Generation, that uses discussion and debate to deepen students’ reading comprehension. Teachers were filmed conducting classroom discussions with their own students and then interviewed about their experiences, particularly how they made decisions on what to do and say in response to student contributions or events that emerged in the discussion. While developing the craft of dialogic teaching (Boyd and Markarian, 2011), teachers also encountered surprises and dilemmas, two types of teaching uncertainties that tested and influenced their professional growth. Findings showed that teachers mastered more effective discussion teaching skills when they learned to manage or resolve their uncertainties. In fact, surprises and dilemmas were important sources of experiential learning for the teachers who used their experiences of uncertainty to see and respond successfully to student contributions. The dissertation is comprised of two main articles. The first study analyzes the role that surprise plays in changing teacher perceptions of student abilities in academic discussion. The second is a case study exploring one teacher’s teaching dilemmas, and how, in order to resolve competing instructional goals, he attained more sophisticated techniques that fostered productive student talk. These findings shed light on how professional educators can support teacher implementation of academic discussion when surprises and teaching dilemmas are addressed in professional development.

Abstract:
In this thesis the students' experiences of science classroom discussions are examined as well as the nature of their discussions and their ability to take different perspectives while working with socio-scientific issues (SSI). Student questionnaires concerning their attitudes towards school science and science in society, a paper-and-pencil test and focus group discussions have been analysed. The results show that students get to discuss during science lessons, and that they learn a lot from doing so. They also show that the SSI work has brought about a lot of discussions, to which students have a positive attitude. When investigating students' written and oral demonstrationsfewexamplesof argument-based discussions or ofperspective-taking ability were found. Based on these results I argue that in-service teacher training should be carried out, focusing how to organise SSI discussions so that they support students' development of concepts and of generic skills.

Abstract:
Banjo Romantika introduces the musicians who play this unique bluegrass hybrid. Czechs first heard bluegrass during World War II when the Armed Forces Network broadcast American music for soldiers. The music represented freedom to dissatisfied Czechs living in a communist state. Czechs’ love for the music was solidified when Pete Seeger visited and performed in 1964. Inspired by classic American bluegrass sounds, an assortment of musicians from across the formerly communist Czech Republic have melded the past, the political and the present into a lively musical tradition entirely its own.Screening and discussions occurred on the following dates and places: Czech and Slovak Cultural Association / Minnesota Bluegrass and Old Time Music Association, St. Paul, MN (11/18/2017) William King Museum Speaker Series, Birthplace of Country Music Museum, Bristol, VA (02/07/2017)Mid-Atlantic Chapter of the Society of Ethnomusicology Annual Conference, Charlottesville, VA (03/05/2016)Appalachian Studies Association, Johnson City (03/27/2015)Society for Ethnomusicology, Pittsburgh, PA (11/13/2014)IBMA World of Bluegrass Business Conference, Raleigh, NC (09/28/2014)International Country Music Conference, Nashville, TN (05/24/2014)Colgate University, (9/20-21/2016)Merlefest, Wilkesboro, NC (4/24/2015)College of Charleston (3/19/2015)West Virginia University (11/12/2014)University of Virginia Dept. of Music, Charlottesville, VA (11/8/2013)Walker Arts and History Center, Cary, NC (9/26/2013)Fulbright Distinguished Scholar Series, American Center at the U.S. Embassy, Prague, Czech Republic (6/20/2013)Banjo Jamboree Bluegrass Festival, Čáslav, Czech Republic (6/21/2013, 6/22/2013)Jerome College of Prague, Prague, Czech Republic (6/24/2013)Moravská Zemská Knihovna, Brno (6/27/2013)White Stork Bluegrass Festival, Luka nad Jihlavou (7/8/2013)

Abstract:
This document has been prepared for debate within the ranks of the ANC. It does not represent an agreed policy, but rather seeks to contribute to a democratic process of formulating our movement's economic policy. The movement believes that economic policy should address itself to the demands and needs of the majority of the people, and active discussion and debate is essential if they are to have a more prominent place. The ANC has long recognised the necessity for political liberation and constitutional changes to be accompanied by socioeconomic transformation. The Freedom Charter proclaimed the necessity for the people to share in the countries wealth, for the land to be distributed to those who work it, for there to housing, security and comfort for all, and for the doors of learning and culture to opened. The constitutional guidelines also recognised the need for economic restructuring to be part of the process of constitutional change.<br>"This document has been prepared for debate within the ranks of the ANC". -- Introduction<br>"DEP workshop, Harare, 20-23 September 1990."

Full text
Abstract:
The following piece is a three movement, twenty minute orchestral work in a Romantic style whose primary goals are accessibility and beauty. In the process of writing this piece, I learned that strong and memorable melodies are the key to a successful composition - taking influence from Henry Mancini and early Japanese video game composers, this work takes a central melodic theme through a series of variations to demonstrate the power of harmonic and orchestrational recontextualization. Rhythmically, the work utilizes techniques from the Minimalist and Progressive Rock traditions to strike a balance between rhythmic complexity and melodic focus. The three movements are meant to represent three steps towards self-actualization - Explore depicts curiosity and open-mindedness, Engage demonstrates the merits of focusing on one's craft, and Wonder represents the value of feeling awe towards the world even if it is not easy or simple. Ultimately, the work moves through a wide variety of moods and textures throughout its duration while staying focused on the central theme until the end, with the goal of creating a listening experience that is both rich and memorable.

Abstract:
In everyday language, people tend to speak in a non-committing fashion when making claims, either to save their own face or to save another person’s face. In linguistics, this is called hedging, with common words and expressions such as probably, assume and I don’t know often revealing that a hedging speech act has been performed. In computer-mediated communication, Skovholt et al. (2014) discovered that emoticons, rather than signaling the sender’s emotions, were used to hedge. This study aims to further investigate the matter by looking at how users on a board game forum hedge when speaking about board games’ complexity with the research question “do more complex games involve more hedge usage on the board game forum Boardgamegeek?” as the point of departure. Data was taken from forum posts tagged with rules. The results showed that complexity barely increases the likelihood of hedging, with a slight edge given to simpler games.

Gallant, Jenny Jin Ying. "Dilemmas in an online academic discussion." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/16682.

Full text
Abstract:
Since the application of Web-based templates in distance education, the threaded discussion forum is regarded as one of the most effective tools for promoting interaction in a virtual learning community (Smith, Ferguson, & Caris, 2003). However, as interactions are being encouraged, facilitated, and evaluated in the discussion online forum, what do students do when they interact with each other, with course content, and with their instructors? What problems do they face as they ‘talk’ with each other? What strategies do they use to balance and negotiate the embedded institutional discourse, course objectives and requirements, personal ideals and goals? This qualitative case study investigated some of the complexities of different aspects of the online threaded discussion in a Canadian university graduate online course. The data was collected from an asynchronous graduate seminar. The goal of the study was to examine the tensions and conflicts that pertain to the interactions in the online community in order to better understand the nature of the interaction in an online learning community and to provide insights for more effective online learning environment. The findings suggest that a major challenge for establishing a successful online academic community is the recognition and better understanding of the complex nature of the online discussion. The issues of academic versus interpersonal, freedom versus constraints, vulnerability versus the need to socialize underpin students’ engagement in academic learning and satisfaction. The finding also indicates that the notion of ‘academic community’ unfolded in discussion forum needs to recognize the legitimacy of and to include and facilitate a space for social/interpersonal interactions in addition to academic content learning. The study indicated that the perceptions of the functions of online academic discussion needed to be considered in the context of personal education ideologies and learning goals. Students’ ideologies of education play a role in their perceptions of the functions of the learning environment. Their perceptions affect their participation and satisfaction of their online experience. Knowledge of their perceptions helps the instructor adjust to allow variations of styles and degrees of interactions.

Tucker, Beth. "Facilitator Guides for Grandparent Discussion Groups." College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, University of Arizona (Tucson, AZ), 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/156907.

Full text
Abstract:
55 pp.<br>Training resources for volunteer facilitators of grandparent discussion groups; Grandparents Raising Grandchildren<br>Grandparents-raising-grandchildren discussion groups may conduct their meetings by a) focusing on issues that members suggest and/or b) choosing from among a list of critical topics that are common issues to most grandparents. Sometimes, discussion group facilitators want help identifying topics that are both reliable and educational. To fill the need for conversation-starting topics, we have provided a series of discussion topics for a facilitator's reference. These discussion topics have been gathered from KKONA's experience listening to the issues grandparents bring up about raising grandchildren. Some of the best group discussions introduce a topic after grandparents have attended a related workshop or training that allows grandparents to process information that they have heard or read. Following through with a discussion topic will help the group more deeply explore the issue and gather grandparents' ideas. The themes of the discussion topics include legal issues, relationship issues, discipline, schools, accessing social services and recordkeeping. There are eighteen topics. The sources for these materials include research and parenting materials as well as practical recommendations gathered from discussion groups. As you use these sheets, remember that they are intended to spark discussion and give you some reliable references. The sheets are not meant to be a step-by-step method for conducting your discussion groups nor do they provide in-depth information.

Shin, Shiou-Min, and 辛孝敏. "Discussion of Private Transfer." Thesis, 2007. http://ndltd.ncl.edu.tw/handle/47963829472257703102.

Full text
Abstract:
碩士<br>國立臺灣大學<br>經濟學研究所<br>95<br>The ``Transfer'' can be classified to two different kinds as public transfer and private transfer by the way of doing and its purpose. The public transfer, also called the governmental transfer, represents the social welfare expenditure. This kind of transfer is held by the government for the citizens who need material help. The private transfer is different from the public transfer. It is belonged to the behavior of a person to person. It can also be divided into two kinds of inter vivos transfer and bequest transfer. The giver of public transfer and private transfer are absolutely different but the receiver may be the same. Therefore, numbers of economists are interested in exploring the interaction between public transfer and private transfer, especially observing whether the ``Crowding out effect'' existed. If the ``Crowding out effect'' does exist, the government should reconsider the efficiency of their social welfare policy. This article will make efforts to discuss the characteristics of the inter vivos transfer and bequest transfer. It also attempts to analyze the motivation behind them by reviewing all possible located articles which are related to the research of private transfer since 1970''s. Through all treatises, the motivation of private transfer can mainly be cataloged by three major types as Altruism model, Impure altruism model and Investment model. I will elaborate to investigate the various developments of these models, and to discuss the relation and its influence to the social welfare policy in this article. After the realization of the motivation of private transfer, I would like to address some examinations of the motivation of private transfer in the final part of the article. It seems that most of the economists agree to the results of the altruism model. Even though, there are still many possible factors that may affect the behavior of private transfer. In addition, some economists found that parents, when they are still alive, tend to subsidize more to the children who are poorer. But, the bequest tends to be equally distributed by children. These results obviously contradicted to the models established in the past. It turns out that the economist should gather more accurate data and apply suitable technique to generate a new private model to fit these kinds of new transfer behavior which varied due to the change of recognition of giver to receiver.

Only by continuous self-discovery, we are able to pursue the direction of answer. Artists explore life by art, doing original creation for internal need, expressing the inner voice of people and things passionately and simultaneously through intuition, reducing the limits from image and expressing lyric and abstract painting along with spontaneous rhyme. Through abstract painting creation, we can explore the self setting and memory in subconsciousness. This study attempts to realize the inner voice in creation through psychology, chakra and chromatics. Creation adopts document analysis and uses creation analysis tools such as chromatics, psychology, chakra and the relationship between seven kinds of emotion and organs in Chinese medicine to observe the internal emotion and kinds of information reflected by subconsciousness through analysis, so as to provide the psychological states of observation as goal, in the process of painting, it finds that creation like this can release the pressure, inspect self pressure status and observe internal emotion as well as remind yourself to notice physical and psychological health.

Backer, David I. "The Distortion of Discussion." Thesis, 2014. https://doi.org/10.7916/D8GX48QX.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation addresses a common, but troubling, educational interaction: when a facilitator (whether teacher, professor, or organizer) announces that a discussion will take place about some subject or question, but proceeds to speak at length and field questions regarding that subject. In this case, a controlled and unequal form of interaction known as recitation has occurred, though the interaction was called a "discussion" at the outset. Since discussion, as a form of interaction, connotes democracy, equality, and freedom, this interaction (where recitation passes for discussion) is distorted. After a survey of discussion's many pedagogical meanings, a Marxist theoretical approach--primarily drawing from Louis Althusser and Valentin Voloshinov--is used to critique the distortion of discussion. From the Voloshinovian perspective, the aforementioned distortion composes and iterates the social formation known as neoliberal capitalism. A psychoanalytic theoretical approach is then used to propose a new concept of discussion that works against this neoliberal distortion, one founded on Jacques Lacan's early concept of dehiscence. The dissertation concludes with suggestions for dehiscent facilitation practices, calling for greater emphasis on the form of interaction (as opposed to content) when working for social and political change.

Abstract:
This dissertation is aimed at understanding the contribution of the implementation of discussion in the learning of the contents of the History course as well as in the development of some essential skills to the students' training. The relevance of the study stems from the need to resort to different pedagogical options that promote autonomous learning and more involvement of students in the teaching-learning process. In fact, we started with a constructivist vision to respond to the wishes of the students involved in the research, who demanded a renewal of teaching methodology, especially in relation to subjects such as History, which not everyone was identified with. The investigation focused on the analysis of many aspects related to the implementation of group dynamics in the history classes of a 9th grade class. Thus, the qualitative research and the methodological model, Case Study, was chosen as a way of studying the behavior and reaction of a group of students in a natural environment, the classroom, whose profile corresponded to the criteria required by the researcher-participant, the teacher. The topic selected for the classroom discussion, "Islamic radicalism and global terrorism", due to the mediates and curiosity that the subject arouses in society, seemed to be a correct choice. In fact, it was necessary to start from a content that was part of the history program of the 9th grade and that generated the interest of the students. In this context, and in order to evaluate the effectiveness of the teaching strategy implemented, data that could provide relevant information about the understanding of the addressed contents and about the degree of students’ satisfaction were collected. The study was particularly focused on the analysis of the results of the satisfaction surveys regarding the applied pedagogical approaches as well as the content of the reports elaborated by the students. The interpretation of these data showed that the implemented pedagogical approach pleased the great majority of the students, due to the fact that a more organized, disciplined and favorable classroom environment was provided, which enabled the reflection and discussion of ideas; this helped overcome some of the problems identified empirically and proven by analyzing the results obtained of the class characterization survey: the indifference of some students towards the classroom tasks, the monopolization of the dialogue by some students and the inhibition of others, as well as an unorganized participation and lack of interest in the subject contents.

Abstract:
碩士<br>國立中央大學<br>土木工程研究所<br>95<br>Relative Intensity (RI) shows the intensity of earthquake that had happened in a space. RI is estimated by dividing the number of epicenters on the map within a specific period by the number of earthquakes occurred at those epicenters. The main idea is that those places with abnormal RI indexes may be the most probable places at which strong earthquakes occur in the future. Therefore, a place would be considered a dangerous area if its Relative Intensity (RI) surpasses the security critical point. This thesis focuses on the stability of RI and elaborates on the stability of RI through different layer depths, net sizes, time periods, and security critical points.

Do, Jheng, and 杜政. "Discussion on Criminal Speedy Trial." Thesis, 2014. http://ndltd.ncl.edu.tw/handle/yjhpub.

Full text
Abstract:
碩士<br>玄奘大學<br>法律學系碩士班<br>102<br>The Criminal Speedy Trial Act (hereinafter as the Speedy Trial Act) was promulgated on May 19th, 2010 and implemented in two stages for about of years. During this time, there have been many theses on Speedy Trial Act. However, most of them are about detainment, the discussion on limits of making appeals, and not that many literatures on the discussion of Speedy Trial Act from the viewpoint of real legal practice. In addition, there have been many impending trials of grave nature without a final verdict where Speedy Trial Act was introduced and the defendant’s sentence was reduced, causing much discontent in society. This paper is of the opinion that Speedy Trial Act is a new Act, and other judicial issues can be integrated to initiate discussion. Therefore, this paper takes the approach to try to use one’s practical experience and learning in the legal field and Speedy Trial Act as the main axis and complement with other litigation issues, creating a brainstorm to look at Speedy Trial Act from different angles. The most important spirit in the legislation of Speedy Trial Act is “adequacy” and “speed”. This paper attempts to use the viewpoint of “speed” as the starting point in conjunction with the present lay judge system promoted by the Judicial Yuan, and using the “case flow management system” as a reference in correcting the amount of time needed to try a case as a way to inspect the current speed involved in trying cases in the judicial process. As for the spirit of “adequacy”, the article takes the starting point with evidence investigation. The comprehensiveness and the range that can be investigated in relation to the collection of evidence can lead to a correct and adequate verdict because truth is discovered. The investigation of evidence is the most important task for detective unit. However, there is no penalty required for omissions under the current laws. The omission of evidence could mean that important evidence which can seriously affect the verdict will be lost. As for the present decisions in legal practice, there is a limit put on the range which the judge can investigate evidence. The aforementioned view will directly affect the adequacy of the cases being tried. The end of this article talks about the necessity for the existence of Speedy Trial Act from the standpoint of our nation’s system. As a result, this article will provide different viewpoints for inadequate areas where new solutions are needed for discussion.
