Abstract:
Audiences’ TV series entertainment experiences are increasingly shaped not only by the events on the ‘first screen’ but also by discussions on social media. While an extensive body of research has examined practices of ‘second screening,’ especially on Twitter, online discussions before and after the live broadcast and on other platforms have received less attention. On Reddit—one of the most important platforms for Social TV—discussions often take place in temporally structured threads that allow users to discuss an episode before (pre-premiere thread), during (live premiere thread), and after (post-premiere thread) it airs. In this project, we examine whether these spaces mainly indicate temporal preferences among users or are associated with different usage practices and motives. To do so, we conducted two case studies of the Reddit community r/gameofthrones: a survey about usage motives (<em>n</em> = 417) and an automated content analysis of approximately 1.2 million comments left on the episode discussion threads in which we examined thread use over time, interactions between users, and discussion content. The results revealed differing usage motives and practices for the three thread types, illustrating the distinct function that these communication spaces fulfil for users.

Abstract:
Huge data on the web come from discussion forums, which contain millions of threads. Discussion threads are a valuable source of knowledge for Internet users, as they have information about numerous topics. The discussion thread related to single topic comprises a huge number of reply posts, which makes it hard for the forum users to scan all the replies and determine the most relevant replies in the thread. At the same time, it is also hard for the forum users to manually summarize the bulk of reply posts in order to get the gist of discussion thread. Thus, automatically extracting the most relevant replies from discussion thread and combining them to form a summary are a challenging task. With this motivation behind, this study has proposed a sentence embedding based clustering approach for discussion thread summarization. The proposed approach works in the following fashion: At first, word2vec model is employed to represent reply sentences in the discussion thread through sentence embeddings/sentence vectors. Next, K-medoid clustering algorithm is applied to group semantically similar reply sentences in order to reduce the overlapping reply sentences. Finally, different quality text features are utilized to rank the reply sentences in different clusters, and then the high-ranked reply sentences are picked out from all clusters to form the thread summary. Two standard forum datasets are used to assess the effectiveness of the suggested approach. Empirical results confirm that the proposed sentence based clustering approach performed superior in comparison to other summarization methods in the context of mean precision, recall, and F-measure.

Abstract:
AbstractWeb-based discussion fora proliferate on the Internet. These fora consist of threads about specific matters. Existing forum search facilities provide an easy way for finding threads of interest. However, understanding the content of threads is not always trivial. This problem becomes more pressing as threads become longer. It frustrates users that are looking for specific information and also makes it more difficult to make valuable contributions to a discussion. We postulate that having a concise summary of a thread would greatly help forum users. But, how would we best create such summaries? In this paper, we present an automated method of summarising threads in discussion fora. Compared with summarisation of unstructured texts and spoken dialogues, the structural characteristics of threads give important advantages. We studied how to best exploit these characteristics. Messages in threads contain both explicit and implicit references to each other and are structured. Therefore, we term the threads hierarchical dialogues. Our proposed summarisation algorithm produces one summary of an hierarchical dialogue by ‘cherry-picking’ sentences out of the original messages that make up a thread. We try to select sentences usable for obtaining an overview of the discussion. Our method is built around a set of heuristics based on observations of real fora discussions. The data used for this research was in Dutch, but the developed method equally applies to other languages. We evaluated our approach using a prototype. Users judged our summariser as very useful, half of them indicating they would use it regularly or always when visiting fora.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to explore how the integration of online discussion into a mathematics methods course affected pre-service teachers’ learning. Students’ transcription of online discussion was analyzed using a mixed methods approach, combining computer-mediated discourse analysis and Chi-square test analysis. The data revealed that the online discussion helped pre-service teachers not only deepen their learning of mathematics methods, but also demonstrated their abilities to teach mathematics in different ways. It also indicated that the depth of their learning depended on the levels of threads and topics of discussion. Deep learning occurs 1) more often in the first level thread than subsequent level threads, and 2) in discussion topics, primarily those related to practice-based issues rather than theory-based topics.

Abstract:
With the explosive growth of online discussions published everyday on social media platforms, comprehension and discovery of the most popular topics have become a challenging problem. Conventional topic models have had limited success in online discussions because the corpus is extremely sparse and noisy. To overcome their limitations, we use the discussion thread tree structure and propose a “popularity” metric to quantify the number of replies to a comment to extend the frequency of word occurrences, and the “transitivity” concept to characterize topic dependency among nodes in a nested discussion thread. We build a Conversational Structure Aware Topic Model (CSATM) based on popularity and transitivity to infer topics and their assignments to comments. Experiments on real forum datasets are used to demonstrate improved performance for topic extraction with six different measurements of coherence and impressive accuracy for topic assignments.

ABSTRACTThis article examines the use of second-person pronouns in on-line French language discussion fora, with specific focus on Doctissimo and Meilleur du chef, two fora from which approximately 400,000 words were collected for this corpus. Two hundred discussion threads (i.e., series of linked postings), with a minimum of fifteen postings (i.e., messages) and a maximum of twenty per thread, were analysed in three different ways in order to determine whether tu, vous-singular, or neither could be considered the default address pronoun. The results of the analysis suggest that while tu is clearly preferred in many cases, its use has not become systematic.

Abstract:
A method for visualizing discussion flow is proposed for analyzing the thread in KGBBS (KeyGraph-based BBS). It is known that group discussion is effective for chance discovery, in which information visualization plays an important role in providing participants with a material to that brainstorm various ideas, opinions, and interpretations. In order to enable online discussion while sharing the same visualized material, KGBBS is proposed based on KeyGraph, which is one of the typical visualization techniques in chance discovery. The aim of this paper is to utilize the result of discussion using KGBBS, by visualizing discussion flow of the thread in KGBBS. The method consists of 2 kinds of visualization techniques — a comment chain diagram to visualize the structure of comment chain, and a visual summary on KeyGraph to visualize concrete transition of topics through successive 2 or 3 comments. The proposed method is applied to actual discussion data, and the analysis results show the combination of both the visualization techniques, making it possible to analyze concrete transition of topics without reading comments in a thread.

AbstractIn this paper, we address query-based summarization of discussion threads. New users can profit from the information shared in the forum, Please check if the inserted city and country names in the affiliations are correct. if they can find back the previously posted information. However, discussion threads on a single topic can easily comprise dozens or hundreds of individual posts. Our aim is to summarize forum threads given real web search queries. We created a data set with search queries from a discussion forum’s search engine log and the discussion threads that were clicked by the user who entered the query. For 120 thread–query combinations, a reference summary was made by five different human raters. We compared two methods for automatic summarization of the threads: a query-independent method based on post features, and Maximum Marginal Relevance (MMR), a method that takes the query into account. We also compared four different word embeddings representations as alternative for standard word vectors in extractive summarization. We find (1) that the agreement between human summarizers does not improve when a query is provided that: (2) the query-independent post features as well as a centroid-based baseline outperform MMR by a large margin; (3) combining the post features with query similarity gives a small improvement over the use of post features alone; and (4) for the word embeddings, a match in domain appears to be more important than corpus size and dimensionality. However, the differences between the models were not reflected by differences in quality of the summaries created with help of these models. We conclude that query-based summarization with web queries is challenging because the queries are short, and a click on a result is not a direct indicator for the relevance of the result.

Abstract:
This thesis constitutes one of the first investigations focused on characterizing online participation in civic technologies, a type of platform increasingly popular on the Internet that allows citizens new forms, on a larger scale, of political participation. Given the opportunities of civic technologies in democratic governance, it should be noted that their design, like that of any online platform, is not neutral. The ways in which information is presented or interaction between users is allowed can greatly alter the results of participation. For this reason, we analyze the impact of different interventions in civic technologies in relation to online conversation views, ordering criteria for ranking petitions, and deliberative interfaces. Since these interventions were carried out by the corresponding development teams, the analyses have required to develop novel computational and statistical methods, while also extending generative models of discussion threads to better characterise the dynamics of online conversations. Results of the different case studies highlight the social and political impact of these interventions, suggesting new directions for future research and the need to develop a paradigm of citizen experimentation for democracy.<br>Esta tesis constituye una de las primeras investigaciones en caracterizar la participación online en tecnologías cívicas, un tipo de plataforma cada vez más popular en Internet que permite a la ciudadanía nuevas formas, a una mayor escala, de participación política. Abstract:
A number of approaches and methods are being used to assess higher cognition within online threaded discussions, as evidenced by the corpus of scholarship. However, a review of the literature suggests that current strategies relating to asynchronous discourse have tended to focus on cognitive processes that are mostly driven by task-oriented communication, thereby failing to assess the quality of interactions that engender meaning-making and knowledge creation. The first goal of this study was to decompose and interpret examples of threaded conversation exhibiting lexical attributes of higher cognition. The second goal was to identify instances of critical thinking and indicators of deep learning contributing to meaningful reflection within diachronic encounters to develop more effective higher-order thinking strategies within discussions. Discourse analysis theory in conjunction with Garrison's stages of critical thinking was used to examine meaning-making within contexts of social interaction. Archival discussion data were examined from 39 participants derived from 2 online undergraduate courses at a small private university in the southeastern United States. The content analysis qualitative design applied computer-mediated discourse analysis (CMDA) to analyze and classify statements in discussion transcripts according to Garrison's stages of critical thinking. Results indicated a pattern of utterances suggesting in-depth learning, with a smaller sample of stanzas indicating surface-level processing. Results of this study can be used by teachers and course designers to create positive change by purposefully engendering critical reflection, thereby preparing learners for the work of the future necessitating well thought-out approaches to grapple with new problems and situations in new ways.

<p>The aim of this study is to investigate how language is used, online, in a condescending way in order to make the recipient feel belittled. The research questions sought to find out what kind of linguistic strategies are used online in order to make language function in a derogatory way as well as the linguistic reactions these strategies evoke in the recipients. How this derogatory usage can be met by using specific linguistic strategies was also explored.</p><p>The study was conducted by performing qualitative discourse analysis based on the theoretical framework of Culpeper’s (1996) impoliteness theory. The data consisted of excerpts from four different threads in online discussion forums. The results indicate that there are several ways to insult someone, and that sarcasm, in particular, is heavily utilized in order to make language function in a derogatory manner.</p><p>The conclusion of the study is that phenomena such as the flouting of maxims, face-threatening acts, impoliteness strategies and flaming are all utilized when trying to belittle someone. All these linguistic strategies performed with the intention to insult people have proved to have a negative affect on people who are exposed to them. This affect can be detected through the linguistic reactions they rendered, for example: counter-attacks with insults of their own and refuting the insults.</p><p>The present study contributes to enlightening linguistic strategies which are being used in a derogatory way and as such might function to raise awareness of the power invested in language.</p>

Abstract:
During these past twenty years, we witnessed some important changes in the organizational context and environment that motivate scholars and management academics to examine the topic of followership more deeply. Then, in the leadership literature, we noticed the emergence of a small but growing number of articles that are devoted to this topic and that challenge the previous conceptions of leadership. Numerous scholars developed a more contemporary conception of followership, in which they conceive the role of followers as essential to ensure the organizational performance. Consequently, as it is already the case for leadership, many management academics and practitioners recommend organizations to invest and devote part of their time and energy to the development and training of followers. In this context and in front of such recommendations, the question of desirability is addressed along this thesis. More precisely, the purpose of this work is to discuss if it is really desirable to develop followers in the perspective of followers, leaders and organizations. In order to address the research issue, the thesis is divided in two parts. The first one is based on three dominant models from the literature and specifies what we mean by followership. A personal conception of effective followership is then developed and includes two important attributes: an appropriate level of engagement and an active critical thinking. In the second part, the question of desirability is discussed in the perspective of followers, leaders and organizations. For this purpose, we gathered a wide range of information that comes from a personal survey, several theoretical concepts and other empirical data.

This chapter provides some analysis and discussion on the previous three chapters. These chapters have aimed to help develop an overall critique of the normalized sense of monologism's coercive force and heteroglossia's expressive power: monologues do not always oppress and dialogues do not always create the conditions for voices to be heard, this text argues. There are as many ways of constituting social groups as there are ways of imagining monologic communication.

Abstract:
This chapter examines the reception of Hesiod in ancient Greek and Roman philosophy, from Aristotle to Posidonius. The discussion focuses on the contributions of the Peripatetics, Epicureans, and Stoics, the only philosophical schools within this period for which the author has found evidence of Hesiodic reception. Two Hesiodic passages above all seem to have captured the attention of these philosophers: the genesis of the primordial divinities in Theogony and the Myth of Ages, especially the golden age in Works and Days. Granted the importance of these passages and their provision of one unifying thread within this particular history, philosophical interest in and use of Hesiod over the three centuries in question was diverse and complex. The reception is in fact not tightly unified at all.

Abstract:
The broad outline of liberal doctrine across Europe in the first half of the nineteenth century can be easily delineated: liberals shared a fundamental commitment to individual liberty; to religious toleration; to limited government and the rule of law. Drawing on the discussion of forms of arbitrary power as a thread, this article highlights certain key themes in liberal thought up to the mid-nineteenth century. It focuses on liberalism in France and concludes with a discussion of liberalism in Britain, specifically with an analysis of the writings of John Stuart Mill. By way of background, the article first examines the account of despotism as rule by fear provided by Montesquieu in the mid-eighteenth century. It then shows how Alexis de Tocqueville was able to formulate a new concept of the oppression most likely to occur in modern societies. It does this by suggesting that we might take the concept of usurpation, formulated by Benjamin Constant, as a point of transition.

Abstract:
Web 2.0 refers to a collection of second generation web services, such as blogs, social bookmarking, wikis, podcasts, and Really Simple Syndicates (RSS) feeds. While the first generation web (Web 1.0) is about linking information available online, Web 2.0 emphasizes online collaboration and sharing among people. These new web services bring up new opportunities to innovate how we conduct research and education. We report the preliminary explorations of engineering education exploiting Web 2.0 services, through iMechanica (http://imechananica.org). Hosted at Harvard University and powered by Drupal, an open-source content management system (CMS), iMechanica provides a platform for researchers, educators and students to experiment with innovative ideas on engineering education. For example, instructors can post syllabi, lecture notes, as well as slides and videos on iMechanica. Interested learners can view and study these posts, raise questions and make comments. Quite often an active discussion produces more useful information beyond an original post, and inspires new posts and further discussions. Furthermore, one can subscribe to these discussions through RSS feeds and is notified whenever a new entry is added to the thread of discussion. The instructing and learning through iMechanica are not limited within a specific institution or a specific curriculum. Anyone in the world can join such education processes, as either an instructor or a student, or both. These preliminary explorations of engineering education in the age of Web 2.0 hold the promise to build an online life-long learning environment without boundary.

Abstract:
Bolted joints have been used in mechanical structures. However, loosening accidents sometimes happen under several types of loadings. Recently, some studies have been conducted on the screw thread loosening in bolted joints. It is verified that bolted joints are loosened when transverse repeated loadings are applied. Some studies on no rotational loosening in bolted joints under thermal changes have also conducted. However, few studies on rotational screw thread loosening in bolted joints have conducted. In this study, rotational screw thread loosening in bolted joint under repeated temperature changes is examined. Effects of the linear thermal expansion coefficient of clamped parts and number of repeated temperature changes are examined by the measurements and finite element analyses. In the experiments, a bolted joint, which consist of two rectangular plates fastened at room temperature by two bolts and nuts, are put in a furnace and heated by an electric heater. Then, the bolted joint is cooled at room temperature. These thermal cycles are repeated. Bolt temperature and bolt load were measured. Loosening is evaluated from the reductions in the bolt load. Finite element analyses were carried out for clarifying the loosening mechanism. Discussion is made on the mechanism of rotational screw thread loosening in bolted joints under repeated temperature changes. The results show that loosening occurs under repeated temperature changes due to difference in the linear thermal expansion coefficients of the different clamped parts.

Abstract:
Bolted joints have been used in mechanical structures. However, loosening accidents sometimes happen under several types of loadings. Recently, some studies have been conducted on the screw thread loosening in bolted joints. It is verified that bolted joints are loosened when transverse repeated loadings are applied. A lot of parts for preventing the loosening in the joints have been proposed. Among these parts, eccentric nut is especially expected to be the solution for preventing the loosening. Some studies on no rotational loosening in bolted joints under thermal changes have also conducted. However, few studies on rotational screw thread loosening in bolted joints have conducted. In our previous study, mechanism of rotational screw thread loosening in bolted joint under repeated temperature changes was examined. However, the difference in the loosening mechanism between the FEM results and the experimental results was substantial. In this study, the effect of the incline at the bearing surfaces was taken into consideration on the loosening. In addition, the loosening in the bolted joint with the eccentric nut under repeated temperature changes was examined using finite element method (FEM) calculations. Discussion is made on the mechanism and a solution of rotational screw thread loosening in the bolted joints under the repeated temperature changes. The results show that a reduction in axial bolt force was increased when the incline at the bearing surfaces was taken into consideration and the eccentric nut was shown for preventing the bolt loosening.

Abstract:
In mechanical structures, a lot of bolts and nuts have been used. Sometimes loosening accidents happen in the structures under several types of loadings. Recently, the cause of the screw thread loosening is being elucidated. However, the effect of some parts for preventing the loosening in bolted joints such as spring washer, double nut and so on is not fully elucidated. In this study, the experiments were carried out to measure the reduction of axial bolt force in the bolted joint with some parts for preventing the loosening such as the spring washer, the toothed washer, the double nuts, the eccentric nut, and so on under the transverse repeated loadings. The test machine used was Junker’s type loosening machine. Then, the effects of the washers and some types of nuts are evaluated on the loosening of bolted joints. It is shown that the performance for loosening is getting better as the initial clamping force increases and the effect of the washers is not found on the loosening. However, the effect of eccentric nut is substantial on the loosening. In addition, the loosening tests according to NAS were also carried out. No effect of all the washers mentioned above is found due to NAS testing. Discussion is made on the effect of the parts for preventing the loosening mentioned above.

Abstract:
The working definition referenced above is the thread that we used to tie together the content of four sessions and frame discourse at the 2018 AIA Intersections Symposium on Design and Resilience. Three separate, but related, contextual frameworks- Technological, Ecological, and Sociological - provided a platform for a fourth discussion that addressed synthesis and action. Offered as part of the 2018 AIA Conference on Architecture and curated in collaboration with a cohort of moderators, this format represents a radical departure from previous Intersections Symposia. With an articulated mission of bridging the gaps that exists in education, research and practice, the Intersections Symposium is a joint venture between the AIA and ACSA. The move to construct the 2018 symposium as a constellation of sessions delivered throughout the programming of the AIA Conference promised to broaden discourse and make a forum more accessible to the voices who will reinforce the connections between practice and the academy.

Abstract:
This report is based on the discussion that emerged from a convening of a panel of 22 experts in artificial intelligence (AI) and in learning. It introduces three layers that can frame the meaning of AI for educators. First, AI can be seen as “computational intelligence” and capability can be brought to bear on educational challenges as an additional resource to an educator’s abilities and strengths. Second, AI brings specific, exciting new capabilities to computing, including sensing, recognizing patterns, representing knowledge, making and acting on plans, and supporting naturalistic interactions with people. Third, AI can be used as a toolkit to enable us to imagine, study, and discuss futures for learning that don’t exist today. Experts voiced the opinion that the most impactful uses of AI in education have not yet been invented. The report enumerates important strengths and weaknesses of AI, as well as the respective opportunities and barriers to applying AI to learning. Through discussions among experts about these layers, we observed new design concepts for using AI in learning. The panel also made seven recommendations for future research priorities.

Abstract:
This study examines Mozambican popular music to investigate three questions: Are notions of empowerment and accountability present in popular music in Mozambique? If so, what can these existing notions of empowerment and accountability reveal about relations between citizens and state institutions in general and about citizen-led social and political action in particular? In what ways is popular music used to support citizen mobilisation in Mozambique? The discussion is based on an analysis of 46 protest songs, interviews with musicians, music producers and event promoters as well as field interviews and observations among audiences at selected popular music concerts and public workshops in Maputo city. Secondary data were drawn from radio broadcasts, digital media, and social networks. The songs analysed were widely played in the past two decades (1998–2018), a period in which three different presidents led the country. Our focus is on the protest song, conceived as those musical products that are concerned with public affairs, particularly public policy and how it affects citizens’ social, political and economic life, and the relationship between citizens and the state.

Abstract:
This report offers a brief overview of the literature on the defining characteristics of democracy in the 21st century. This report seeks to map out a range of conceptual approaches to understanding democracy, evidence on emerging trends in democratisation, and challenges to realising democracy in its varied forms. The report begins with a discussion on definitions of democracy that have emerged in recent decades (Section 2), highlighting a range of qualifiers that are widely used to differentiate and analyse different democratic regime types. Section 3 summarises trends in key indicators of democracy from widely cited observers – The Economist Intelligence Unit and the V-Dem Institute - and recent trends in public opinion towards democracy, according to World Values and Pew Centre surveys. Section 4 gives a very brief overview of three leading challenges to democracy discussed widely in the literature – gender inequality; the role of media and social media; and declining quality of elections, freedom of expression and civic space.

Abstract:
This study examines the collaborative processes the Chicago Alliance for Equity in Computer Science (CAFÉCS) uses to conduct and use research. The CAFÉCS RPP is a partnership between Chicago Public Schools (CPS), Loyola University Chicago, The Learning Partnership, DePaul University, and University of Illinois at Chicago. Data used in this analysis comes from three years of evaluation data, and includes an analysis of team documents, meeting observations, and interviews with 25 members of the CAFÉCS RPP team. The analysis examines how three problems are being investigated by the partnership: 1) student failure rate in an introductory computer science course, 2) teachers’ limited use of discussion techniques in an introductory computer science class, and 3) computer science teacher retention. Results from the analysis indicate that the RPP engages in a formalized problem-solving cycle. The problem-solving cycle includes the following steps: First, the Office of Computer Science (OCS) identifies a problem. Next, the CAFÉCS team brainstorms and prioritizes hypotheses to test. Next, data analysis clarifies the problem and the research findings are shared and interpreted by the entire team. Finally, the findings are used to inform OCS improvement strategies and next steps for the CAFÉCS research agenda. There are slight variations in the problem-solving cycle, depending on the stage of understanding of the problem, which has implications for the mode of research (e.g hypothesis testing, research and design, continuous improvement, or evaluation).

Abstract:
The lack of motivation and sense of community within schools have proven to be the two most relevant factors behind the decision to drop out. Despite the notable progress made in school access in countries in Latin America and the Caribbean, dropping out of school has still been a problem. This paper explores Scholas Occurrentes pedagogical approach to address these dropouts. Scholas focuses on the voice of students. It seeks to act positively on their motivation by listening to them, creating spaces for discussion, and strengthening soft skills and civic engagement. Scholas aims to enhance the sense of community within schools by gathering students from different social and economic backgrounds and involving teachers, families, and societal actors. This will break down the walls between schools and the whole community. This paper presents Scholas work with three examples from Paraguay, Haiti, and Argentina. It analyzes the positive impacts that Scholas' intervention had on the participants. Then, it focuses on future challenges regarding the scalability and involvement of the institutions in the formulation of new public policies. The approach highlights the participatory nature of education and the importance of all actors engagement.
