Many plant diseases believed to be caused by phytoplasmas were described before phytoplasma groups were delineated through molecular analyses. It is now possible to assess the relationships between phytoplasma identity or classification and specific plant diseases. Data were consistent with the hypothesis of a common ancestral origin of pathogenicity genes in many phytoplasmas and a limited repertoire of plant responses to certain pathogen signals. Observations also were consistent with the hypotheses that the botanical host ranges of some phytoplasmas reflect specificities in transmission by

Abstract Background Autoimmune endocrine diseases can be thought of as a case of mistaken identity. The immune system mistakenly attacks one’s own cells, as if they were foreign, which typically results in endocrine gland hypofunction and inadequate hormone production. Type 1 diabetes mellitus and autoimmune thyroid disorders (Hashimoto and Graves diseases) are the most common autoimmune endocrine disorders, while conditions such as Addison disease are encountered less frequently. Autoantibody production can precede clinical presentation, and their measurement may aid verification of an autoim

Abstract:
Fungal plant pathogens are responsible for extensive annual crop and revenue losses throughout the world. To better understand why fungi cause diseases, we performed gene-disruption mutagenesis on several pathogenic Colletotrichum species and demonstrated that pathogenic isolates can be converted to symbionts expressing non-pathogenic lifestyles. One group of nonpathogenic mutants confer disease protection against pathogenic species of Col!etotrichum, Fusarium and Phytophthora; drought tolerance; and growth enhancement to host plants. These mutants have been defined as mutualists and disease r
