Abstract:
Chapter 13 first looks at how changes at one level in the food supply chain may affect prices and quantities at another level via profit maximization. The chapter then considers firms that are closer to the consumer (e.g., restaurants) who will often be able to set their own prices and consider the analytics of profit maximization under this scenario. Utilizing this framework, the chapter considers the question: Are healthier foods more or less profitable than unhealthy foods? This leads naturally to a discussion of market segmentation, the limit of the market, and the distribution of healthy

This chapter comments on Article 79 of the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court. Article 79 deals with the Trust Fund for Victims established to facilitate the distribution of money and other assets obtained as a result of convictions by the Court. The Trust Fund operates ‘for the benefit of victims’. The term ‘victims’ is defined by Rule 85 of the Rules of Procedure and Evidence as ‘natural persons who have suffered harm as a result of the commission of any crime within the jurisdiction of the Court’. The Trust Fund may also benefit ‘families of such victims’.

Treatment and curative medical care often require medication. This chapter focuses on the provision of medications in impoverished settings and the challenges that inhibit access to life-saving drugs. It will review the failure of the for-profit market to increase drug access for the poor. The evolving concept of essential drugs will be explored by reviewing the history the WHO Essential Medicines List (EML) and the fight to expand the list to include new, and often patented medicines. The international treaties and policies that impact drug availability will be highlighted as will novel syste

This chapter explores Japanese Zen material culture and materialism in a contemporary American monastic context. It examines the adaptation of mainstream business operations by The Monastery Store at Zen Mountain Monastery, established by John Daido Loori near Woodstock, New York, in 1980. It provides a visual and critical analysis of The Monastery Store’s mail-order catalogue, website, and brick-and-mortar facility on the monastery grounds, and it contrasts “retail Zen” (i.e., the mass marketing of vaguely Zen-like articles by multinational distribution chains for maximum profit) and “Zen ret

This chapter examines the socio-economic motivations behind the shaping of retail landscapes in Roman cities. It is about who opened retail outlets, as well as why and where. After critiquing some of the normal methods for illustrating the locations of shops and bars, including the conventional distribution plan itself, as well as questioning the economic rationality of operating tabernae, this chapter argues for the value in complicating our otherwise basic understanding of why urban investments were made in the places we find them. Rather than accepting profit as the single motivation to urb

The examination of the life cycle, institutional structure, and governance and policy environment of co-operatives in the argan oil sector, in south-west Morocco, outlines the successes and setbacks of the co-operative model as a suitable tool for economic and social development in rural areas. Despite the positive development outcomes argan oil co-operatives attained, they strayed from four basic co-operative tenets: democratic decision-making, equitable profit distribution, open membership, and member education on co-operatives. Starting from this analysis, this chapter argues that the succe

For most geographers, thinking geographically about the economy means something very different than for mainstream/geographical economists: what is heterodox for the latter constitutes geographers’ orthodoxy. Nineteen propositions about geographical political economy demonstrate how thinking geographically disrupts core propositions about capitalism in mainstream economic theory. The spatiotemporality and relational nature of inter-sectoral commodity production, shaped by the socio-spatial dialectic, implies that commodity production generally is far from equilibrium, (re)produces uneven geogr
