The disorder of the X chromosome causes defects in sex differentiation in the female phenotype. This work reports a six-month-old, Cocker Spaniel dog with intersex disorder diagnosed as pseudo-hermaphroditism. The dog was brought to the clinic with a swollen reddish penis-like protrusion, which was partially covered by the sheath. Clinical examination revealed the presence of raised nipple-like structures, resembling the nipples and extending from chest to groin region. However, the testes could not be detected. PCR analysis revealed the absence of the Y chromosome. A corrective surgery, inclu

Decades of research on neurodevelopmental disorders have focused on genetics. Although there has been significant progress, the aetiology of many neurodevelopmental disorders still remains unknown. Deciphering genetic sequences of the whole genome can identify disease-causing mutations in individuals. However, the same genetic sequences do not necessarily result in similar gene expression profiles, or the consequential biochemical profiles in every cell and in all individuals. In particular, studies have shown that differential biochemical profiles in males and females, possibly play a role in

Disorder of sex development is an inclusive term that refers to any problem where the genital organ is atypical in relation to chromosomes or gonads. Ovotesticular disorder of sex development, which is formerly known as “true hermaphroditism,” is the most rare form among all disorders of sex development in humans. It is characterized by the simultaneous presence of both ovarian and testicular tissues in the same individual and characteristically presents with ambiguous genitalia in neonates or infants. Herein, we present an unusual case of a 19-year-old individual with phenotypically nearly no

ABSTRACT The 46 XX, testicular sex differentiation disorder, or XX male syndrome, is a rare condition detected by cytogenetics, in which testicular development occurs in the absence of the Y chromosome. It occurs in 1:20,000 to 25,000 male newborns and represents 2% of cases of male infertility. About 90% of individuals present with normal phenotype at birth and are generally diagnosed after puberty for hypoganadism, gynecomastia, and/or infertility. The authors present the report of an XX male with complete masculinization and infertility.

Numerous sex differences in obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) instantiations are likely universal, as the associated evolutionary threats and concerns onto which they map were differentially important to the two sexes. Hence, although some ritualized behaviors or thoughts are indeed culture-specific, others are both culturally and temporally invariant as they are rooted in universal Darwinian etiologies (e.g., the sex differences in OCD symptomatology posited here).

Women showed an excess of delusions of fertility and of jealousy, and were more often than men objects rather than subjects in their grandiose delusions. There was an excess of women who reported co-objects of persecution, and who personally knew their persecutors, nearly always men. Hormones are widely considered to cause powerful psychological effects and because of this psychiatrists may be asked to advise general practitioners, consultants in other specialities or patients about the relationship between hormones (including sex hormones) and psychiatric disorder. Sex differences in rates of depressive disorder have not been convincingly explained, and this reflects a more general failure of research to provide a comprehensive aetiological account of depression. The difference can be used as a probe for evaluating the research base of integrative models of depressive disorder (e.g. Akiskal & McKinney, 1975). It is particularly likely to be illuminating if the causes of the sex difference do not overlap completely the causes of depression itself.
