Abstract:
A good generalization of the Euclidean dimension to disordered systems and noncrystalline structures is commonly required to be related to large scale geometry and it is expected to be independent of local geometrical modifications. The spectral dimension, defined according to the low frequency density of vibrational states, appears to be the best candidate as far as dynamical and thermodynamical properties are concerned. In this letter we give the rigorous analytical proof of its independence of finite scale geometry. We show that the spectral dimension is invariant under local rescaling of c

We provide a very simple proof for the existence of the thermodynamic limit for the quenched specific pressure for classical and quantum disordered systems on a d-dimensional lattice, including spin glasses. We study the ground state magnetic order of the quantum antiferromagnet on the fractal Sierpiński gasket, a system with a dimension between one and two. Using exact diagonalisation we analyse the ground state and thermodynamic properties of small finite systems and calculate data like spin-spin correlations and specific heat. We find arguments that the ground state remains disordered for an XY or Ising like anisotropy in the spin exchange away from the isotropic Heisenberg point.

The eigenvalue problem for a family of tridiagonal matrices arising in the scattering-theory analysis of the conductance in mesoscopic systems, and its fluctuations, is studied. The exactly solvable special cases are identified. For the general problem, qualitative characteristics of the spectrum are established, and approximate solutions for the eigenvalues are constructed. These comprise ones that are valid in the limit of large but finite matrix dimension, and those derived from a perturbation expansion around each of the exactly solvable cases.

Abstract:
The low temperature phase diagram of 1D disordered quantum systems like charge or spin density waves, superfluids, and related systems is considered by a full finite T renormalization group approach for the first time. At zero temperature the consideration of quantum phase slips leads to a new scenario for the unpinning (delocalization) transition. In the strong pinning limit the model is solved exactly. At finite T a rich crossover diagram with various scaling regions is found which reflects the zero temperature quantum critical behavior.
