This study concerns the nature of nitric oxide synthase (NOS) and the role of nitric oxide (NO) in the rat gastrointestinal tract. The major objectives were (i) to characterise NOS isoforms in the gastric glandular mucosa, (ii) to localise NOS isoforms in the rat gastric glandular mucosa, (iii) to investigate the role of NO in carbachol-stimulated gastric mucus secretion, (iv) to investigate the nature of NOS and small intestine. Immunoblotting was performed using polyclonal antisera raised against two peptides found in the rat brain NOS sequence and commercial monoclonal antibodies directed a

This thesis consists of three chapters, a literature review, an empirical paper, and a reflective paper. Chapter one is a critical review of case study research on Disordered Eating (DE) in Gastrointestinal disorders (GId). Following both database and manual searches, twelve case study reports, describing 29 cases, were included and reviewed. The case study data shows there be a relationship between DE and GId, though the nature and direction of this relationship remains unclear. Possible risk factors for the onset of DE behaviours in the GId population are identified and discussed, as are sug

Campylobacter jejuni is a prevalent cause of bacterial gastroenteritis in humans worldwide. The mechanism by which C. jejuni survives stomach acidity remains unknown. In this study, we have demonstrated that the ferric uptake regulator Fur plays an important role in Campylobacter acid survival. C. jejuni with a fur deletion was more sensitive to acid than the wild-type. Profiling the acid stimulon of the C. jejuni ∆fur mutant allowed us to uncover Fur-regulated genes under acidic conditions. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are key regulatory molecules involved in cellular proliferation, apoptosis and fibrosis, which are all modulated by hypoxia.
