Dispensing Dispensationalism explores the hermeneutic of Cyrus Ingerson Scofield as found in the second edition of the Scofield Reference Bible, published in 1917. It seeks to prove that this is no ordinary reference Bible but is a volume which employs the annotation of selected texts to promote a classical dispensationalist interpretation. It also aims to contextualise Scofield in succession to John Nelson Darby and as predecessor to later dispensationalists such as Lewis Sperry Chafer, Charles Ryrie, Craig Blaising, Darrell Bock and Robert Saucy. In this essay I focus on Christian Zionism, its roots and growth, to judge wether or not it is possible to look at Christian Zionism as a modern form of myth. To do that I have used Bruce Lincoln's definition: ideology in narrative form. I also ask the question whether this kind of religious conviction can be labeled as an extreme or become a danger to society. The conclusion I reach is that Christian Zionism and its broader context, dispensationalism, very well fits the definitions of modern myth that Lincoln offers. This dissertation explores the question of hope in the nuclear age by examining a movement within the North American Christian tradition known as dispensationalism. It concentrates specifically on one author, Hal Lindsey, whose books on the "end-times" are the basis for much of the current Christian apocalyptic thinking on this continent. There are two fundamental questions: (1) What does Lindsey's dispensational interpretation of God and Divine providence do to his understanding of hope?; (2) Does Lindsey's interpretation of the hope contribute anything to an articulation of hope in the nucle
