At the elevated temperatures required for metal carbide synthesis, atomic diffusion across particle boundaries can occur, resulting in the fusion of smaller particles into larger ones. This process is termed sintering. By providing a physical barrier for the inhibition of sintering, in the form of easily removable alkaline earth metal oxide “cast materials”, this thesis shows that Prussian Blue nanoparticles can undergo thermal decomposition to produce discrete Fe3C nanoparticles. Analysing non-metallic inclusions (NMI) by conventional microscopy is prone to errors. Better imaging can be achieved by using electrolytic extraction (EE) to effectively dissolve the metal matrix, freeing the inclusions so that they can be collected on a filter. The most commonly used method for the time-domain Maxwell equations is the Finite-Difference Time-Domain method (FDTD). This is an explicit, second-order accurate method, which is used on a staggered Cartesian grid. The main drawback with the FDTD method is its inability to accurately model curved objects and small geometrical features. This is due to the Cartesian grid, which leads to a staircase approximation of the geometry and small details are not resolved at all. This thesis presents different ways to circumvent this drawback, but still take advantage of the benefits of the FDTD method.

This master thesis deals with analysis of battery mass using x-ray spectral microanalysis. For the measurement two scanning electron microscopes equipped with energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopes were used. Appropriate examples were prepaired by standard method. Then elemental analysis was performed with changing conditions of measurement. Two programs were used for spectrums evaluation and in the end the size of errors was observed for every conditions.
